The 2013 GSA Annual meeting held in Denver, Colorado from October 27-30 marked the 125th anniversary of the GSA. The meeting drew a record 8061 number of attendees, 409 from the Hydrogeology Division. The Division also sponsored or co-sponsored over 30 oral and poster sessions, in addition to a variety of other events throughout the meeting. As usual, the luncheon and awards ceremony was a sold out event, with over 175 tickets sold. Later that day, after the final presentation by the outgoing Birdsall-Dreiss lecturer, the Division hosted the always popular student reception. At the reception dozens of students competed for prizes donated by numerous individuals, corporations and groups (see page 9 for more details). A special event was held to celebrate the 125th anniversary of GSA. On Saturday October 26th the Division held a Legends Dinner to commemorate, celebrate and remember some of the Legends of Hydrogeology (see page 5 for more details). The 2013 meeting was a resounding success, surpassing all expectations. While next year’s meeting does not bring about a big anniversary, it will also be an exciting event as the meeting goes North of the border for the first time since 1998. The 2014 Annual meeting will be held in Vancouver, BC Canada on October 19-22nd. We hope to see you all there! Division

Greetings from rainy Morocco! That may sound like acontradiction, but winter hereis the relatively wet season. I'mspending 4 months as avisiting researcher at theFaculty of Sciences andTechnology in Fez. It's aninteresting part of the world inw h i c h t o b e s t u d y i n ghydrogeology—more aboutthat in the next issue of thenewsletter.I feel honored to be Chair of theHydrogeology Division, whichhas been my professionalhome for more than 20 years.(The little voice inside my headis saying, “Don't mess it up.”)The night before the 2013Annual Meeting in Denver, around 70 of us celebrated thehistory of our division, andthose members who founded

and have sustained it, at ourfirst Legends Dinner. I'mgrateful to Todd Halihan, ourPast Chair and the organizer ofthat event, for all his effortsduring the preceding year.Likewise, I need to thank anumber of other volunteers fortheir service:

- the other members ofthe Management Board:Madeline (Maddy) Schreiber,First Vice-Chair; Alicia Wilson,Second Vice-Chair; andespecially Eric Peterson,Secretary-Treasurer;

-Andrea Brookfield, ournewsletter editor, and MikeSukop, our webmaster

- our committee chairsand members ; sec t i onrepresentatives; liaisons toother societies and groups;and council representatives. In particular, I appreciate thehard work of our technicalprogram co-chairs for the 2013Annual Meeting, Bill Sanfordand Eliot Atekwana, and ourprogram chair for the 2014Annual Meeting in Vancouver,Ben Rostron. Chris Gellasch isassisting Ben and will beprogram chair for the 2015Annual Meeting in Baltimore.Based on a peek at the topicalsession proposals we've beenasked to sponsor, I'm lookingforward to another diverse

and engaging set of sessions. At the risk of over-reaching, Ihave several goals for this year:(1) Expand the division'sinternational profile. OurAnnualMeeting in Vancouver, the firstoutside the USA since 1998,o f fe rs oppor tun i t i es fo rengagement with colleaguesf r o m m a n y c o u n t r i e s ,particularly those around thePacific Rim. I'm delighted thatProsun Bhattacharya of theRoyal Institute of Technology(KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, has agreed to serve as thedivision's first liaison to the GSAInternational Section.(2) Continue Todd's work tomake the division's offeringsm o r e r e l e v a n t t ohydrogeolog is ts work ingoutside academia and researchinstitutes.(3) Retain our current membersand attract new members, particularly students and youngprofessionals.( 4 ) R e c o g n i z e t h eaccompl ishments of ourcolleagues by nominations fordivision and society awards.I welcome your help in theseefforts or however you feelmotivated to contribute. Pleasee-mail me with your thoughtsand suggestions.

Thanks—Alan

Hydrogeology Division Luncheon andAwards Reception

When describing the Hydrogeology DivisionLuncheon andAwards Reception I seem to alwaysbegin with the same statement: sold out event. This year was no exception. Over 175 tickets weresold for the event, and we had a packed houseready to mingle, eat and celebrate theaccomplishments of the students and colleaguesrecognized at this year’s reception. This year’sevent started out a little differently. John Mooredonated an original 1932 USGS Division of WaterResources photo compilation that was auctionedoff in support of the Division. After somecompetitive bidding, Ralph Davis of the Universityof Arkansas became the proud owner of this pieceof Hydrogeologic history.

Student Reception

As usual, the Hydrogeology Division’s StudentReception was a well attended event, by bothstudents and professionals. Free beer wasavailable to the students through the David M.Diodato Beer Fund, and prizes were won bystudents competing in a trivia contest. Theseprizes were donated throughout the year by manygenerous companies, organizations andindividuals. This year the students were givenThank You letters to send to donors after receivinga prize. Many filled these out at the reception. Acomplete list of donors is available on page 9. Tomake a donation for the 2014 reception pleasecontact Kallina Dunkle ).([email protected]

who contributed to the division, many of themtouched by or descended from Maxey andLaMoreaux.

Our thanks to John Hawley, Martin Mifflin and JohnMoore for helping with the dinner's theme. Ouradditional thanks to all the division members whosupported the effort in various ways.

As part of the 125th anniversary of GSA, theHydrogeology Division hosted a dinner tocelebrate the contributions of the members of thedivision. The dinner was held on Saturday night,Oct 26, 2013 in Denver at The Broker Restaurant.

The dinner celebrated the legends of our field withformer division leaders and award winners joiningus for food and variable density fluids (withassociated contaminants). It was held in thebasement of the building so that we were dealingwith subsurface fluids.

Seventy division members and guests attended. We heard from division leadership for eachdecade of the division and were delighted to bejoined by Ann Maxey Essex-Bankston, thedaughter of founder George Burke Maxey, andJames Wood LaMoreaux, the son of founderPhillip LaMoreaux. It was fantastic to hear aboutthe start of the division from the children of thosethat made it happen. We did attempt to recordthese proceeding on video.

Fashion at theField SiteYou may recall in the last edition of TheHydrogeologist that Todd Halihan discussed how toproperly dress while doing field work. He discussedhow vanity has no place at the field site, anddemonstrated it with a photo and encouragedothers to send in their field fashion tips and photos.Don Whittemore of the Kansas Geological Survey, sent in the following photo and advice:

“Regarding field wear to keep out the creeping, crawling critters, I purchase a one-piece whitepainter's suit in the hardware store that I can pullon over my clothes when the bugs are out.Although I don't duct tape it around my feet, I douse a heavy elastic band around my ankle andalso spray with repellent to prevent the crittersfrom crawling onto my leg (as well as my wrists, neck, and head). The advantage of the white suitin addition to keeping out the bugs is that theticks can be easily seen and removed. Also, atthe end of the field day, I can remove the paintersuit and remove any ticks. This way I don't haveto travel back from the field site in clothes towhich ticks might be clinging.”

Thanks Don for the tips! If you have any fun fieldfashion advice, send it to [email protected]

Congratulations to Chuck Blay of TEOKInvestigations for correctly identifying theMakauwahi Sinkhole in Kauai, Hawaii as theWhere in the World photo from the previousnewsletter. The Makauwahi sinkhole is located on theMahaulepu Coast of the southeasternmost part ofKauai. The limestone (carbonate eolianite) iscomposed of dune sand originating from algal andcoral reefs. The sinkhole is accessed via a smallcave opening in the bank of an adjacent stream. The accumulated sediment in the sinkholerepresents the complete paleontological andpaleoecological record of human occupation ofKauai. Evidence of human activity can be gainedby careful inspection of the photo. The small rockwall by Theresa is composed of volcanic rockcarried into the sinkhole by a tsunami.

Useful at the Field Site: A Fishin’ ShirtBy Todd Halihan

Well another field season is upon us, so theequipment recommendation for this issue is agood ol' fishin' shirt. I started down the road of fieldshirts when George Tsoflias from the University ofKansas told me to wear a long sleeve dress shirt inthe field. It provided sun and insect protection andyou would look somewhat formal when talking tolandowners.Over the years, I found that long sleeve fishin'shirts work even better, although you may not beas stylish in the field. The shirts made forfishermen are great for hydrogeology. They oftenhave high UV protection built in and so are great forphysical sun protection. They are light weight andhave aeration in good places to keep you cool. Ifyou end up in a creek, they dry quickly. You canbuy them with permethrin built in or treat them tokill insects while you wear them. And finally, theycause you to lose less moisture over the day andthus you will be less likely to dehydrate (althoughyou might start sweating a little earlier). I've hadseveral cases of students drying out like raisinsand wearing themselves out in short sleeves whenI was still rolling along with long sleeves.

If you troll outdoor gear stores, they often have tornor faded ones that they are selling off. If you getdirty during your normal field work, just pretendyou are wearing it for the second time. Or you canbuy a nice new one and break it in.

Happy field work,

Todd

This Edition’s Photos:

Hint:

In this edition we have two photos, a recent shot, and a more dated shot of the same field site.

Although not as famous as Cape Cod or Borden, this field site was MADE quite popular after beingfeatured in a presentation during a fairly recent Birdsall-Dreiss lecture tour.
