PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Variety Night proved once again what a talented bunch of students we have at Merriwa Central School. Our annual concert is a fantastic opportunity for students to perform on stage, individually and as a group. Thank you to all parents who assisted with costumes, and to Mrs West for organising our “Twisted Tales” Variety Concert 2012. Education Week Education Week is a fantastic opportunity to showcase achievement in NSW Public Schools. Each year we take the opportunity to nominate students, staff and community members for outstanding achievement and contribution to our school. program with Campsie PS. Facilities Upgrade Over the past four years we have been successful in gaining over $3 million of funding to improve facilities for students and staff at our school. Major maintenance work has been carried out on classrooms, external paint work, new multi-purpose courts, covered walkways, shade sails, construction of new primary administration and Trade Training Centre. Next on our list is a $95,000 upgrade to primary

toilets. Funding has now been secured for this project which will make a big difference for our primary students. P&C Meeting A reminder to all parents that the P&C Meeting for August will take place next Wednesday 8 August at 7pm at the RSL Club. Our aim is to make all our meetings welcoming, productive and to the point. We realise that parents have to balance their time and as a result meetings are guaranteed to finish by 8.30pm. All are welcome to attend. Merriwa Horse Sports Merriwa Central School Horse Sports will take place on Monday 13 August at the Merriwa Showground. The event is a major drawcard on the Horse Sports calendar and this year we have had to limit the number of entries due to overwhelming demand in recent years. The committee has been preparing for months for this major event, and as usual rely on the continued support of community members to ensure a safe and successful day.

ASSEMBLY The fife band was pleased to entertain the assembly last Friday; it gave them another chance to practise before the variety night. We played „Grand Old Duke of York‟ and „Kookaburra‟. Year 3 students who are only new to fife this year are all progressing fantastically. Fife has been a long standing tradition at Merriwa Central School starting in 1956, it is wonderful that so many boys have joined this year and are enjoying themselves.

Merriwa Central Careers News 2012 Worldskills Australia National Competition - On 31 August and 1 September Merriwa Central School will be taking a bus to the Worldskills competition with an overnight stay. This competition displays 500 of Australia's best students, trainees and apprentices competing for gold in over 50 categories. The skill areas on show range from traditional trades such as plumbing, bricklaying and hairdressing to the more contemporary professions of web design and fashion technology. This is to replace the MEGS trip to Hunter TAFE and the Defence Force in Newcastle. Years 7 & 8 will have to be accompanied by an adult and they will be offered first preference. Student of the Week Summer has received the Student of the Week award for showing great improvement in all areas. Her eagerness to work, try challenging activities and her ability to accept advice has led to this achievement. Summer should be proud that she wants to be a good citizen because she knows it is right and makes her a great person. In sports, Summer has shown skills in catching and shot put and is a hard-working and a fair member of our team. She

Education Week Every week is education week but it‟s always nice to have a special celebration of the fun and importance of learning. This week education at Cassilis will be celebrated with our assembly on Thursday, 2 August beginning at 9am. Families and community members are invited to watch our public speaking competition (these promise to be fantastic speeches delivered by each of our students K-6), the award ceremony and open classrooms. The morning will conclude with recess. Please bring your own food to share with your child. Don‟t forget about the afternoon assembly at Merriwa Central beginning at 4pm where one student, one teacher, one school learning support officer and a community member will be acknowledged for their excellence. P&C Masquerade Party On Saturday night we had our masquerade ball and there was a roast with lots of other nice things to eat. I would say there were about 60 people there and I had a great night. On the top of the room there was netting with masks that had paper behind them. Black, yellow and red balloons were on the table tied around the beautiful flowers. The lolly draw and the raffle were run to raise money for the year 6 leaver‟s shirts and the P&C will use the money raised to get stuff for the school which will help our education. Thanks to Jo (mum), Scott (dad), Trevor, Vanessa, Rod, Cheryl, the Cassilis Bowling Club and everyone who helped with the night.

Guitar Lessons Mrs Jill Goodman will be coming to Cassilis each Wednesday afternoon for guitar lessons with years 3-6. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn an instrument. We are expecting the delivery of our djembe drums mid August and these instruments are great for all students, K-6. Our Performing Arts night at the end of term will certainly be full of musical treats!

My highlight was getting 11yrs boy champion and I got this by coming first in barrel, bending, the horse race, pony twists and hack class. My horse, Nightcat, went really well.

From relays, to shot put to discus and running, the team is ready to go this Friday at the Upper Hunter Zone Athletics Carnival. Good luck Cassilis and good luck Australia! ST JOSEPH‟S PRIMARY SCHOOL

This term in Stage Two we will be very busy learning a lot of new things! English: We have started collecting information about Australian Animals. Some animals we researched include koalas, kangaroos, possums, bilbies, Tasmanian devils, platypus‟, wombats, echidnas and dingoes. With this information we will be able to write amazing information reports! Mathematics: In mathematics we have been learning about fractions and decimals. We have used interactive games to help us estimate decimals between two numbers. We have also used concrete materials like maths blocks to help our knowledge of whole numbers as well as tenths and hundredths. Religion: In religion we have been “Called to Serve Others”. This unit, provided by the Maitland Newcastle Diocese, includes a notebook used for the smartboard. This notebook includes a wide variety of information communication technology applications, for example PowerPoint, YouTube clips and audio storybooks. PDHPE: This term our unit is „Protecting Me‟. We will be learning about bullying and strategies to handle situations. In this unit we will also be discussing relationships and what is a positive relationship. We are all very lucky in stage two to have great relationships with our families! Science and Technology: We have started learning about a very familiar topic… feathers, fur or fins. We are focusing our studies on Australian animals. We have enjoyed

researching a wide variety of animals and look forward to using this information to write amazing information reports! Our Public Speaking competition will also centre around this integrated unit and I am looking forward to hearing the students discussion on whether Australian animals belong in zoos or not. Human Society and its Environment: Our learning in science is reinforced with our HSIE theme of State and National Parks. We are going to explore the wide variety of parks and reserves within Australia as well as the many uses and functions. Stage two will be researching and developing ways to preserve these untouched and unique natural treasures! Creative Arts: We will be busy dramatising our anti-bulling program and creating natural landscapes linking with our HSIE and Science. We will be creating visual arts using a wide variety of techniques which we will all be learning together! We have got a lot on in stage two this term! I ask that you keep Nicole Martin, Emily Ninness and Darcy Moore in your prayers as they prepare for their Confirmation and First Communion on the 12 August.

"LITTLE LEARNERS" WHAT'S HAPPENING AT PRE-SCHOOL IN

JULY? Stuck on You A reminder that you can order "Stuck on You" labels online any time. Great for everyone, whether they are going to school or not. We have set up our web link and so by entering via our link and ordering online, we receive a small commission and you have no more lost containers! Our link is on the noticeboard - we'll happily write it down again for you. Some Movement Within Our Waiting List In line with regulations and a recent committee decision to increase our 2 and 3 year old enrolments on Tuesday and Thursday from 16 to 20 per day, we have recently welcomed some new families, with others starting after the school holidays. We are doing our best to accommodate as many families as possible. A reminder to those parents who have children attending in nappies, to please bring in their child's nappies from their back pack and place them in their individual holder in our nappy change area, upon signing them in the morning, to aid the smoother running of the day. Thank you. New Routine In Term 3, for the continued safety of our children, parents will notice a new routine upon signing in and out, where parents and others must also print their names as well as signing. This will leave no question as to who has delivered and collected your child. We're all getting used to it!

Settling in to Pre-school Despite us being half way through the year, some new children are joining us. Settling in to Pre-school is a big step for parents as well as children. Let me just say that we really acknowledge what a big step this is. Like any change, or transition, it takes time to adapt to, and is not without challenges. Sometimes children are coming along happily for the first few weeks and all of a sudden tears may start. Perhaps the 'honey moon' period is over and reality has just kicked in. It's our job to believe in the child, and their ability to settle, given time and care. It's also our job to support the parent. Keep in touch. Let us know what you'd like to see happen and any tips that would help us best support you and your child. Please be assured that by working together, it can and does work. We have children currently attending who are 'living proof' of this ability to believe in the child and to not give up. We have a great handout called "Tips to Parents from your Pre-schooler" which we hand out to all new families. Please ask and we would be happy to give any parent a copy. It shows the importance of remaining positive throughout the transition from home to pre-school and looks at things from the child's perspective.

MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE After School and Vacation Care

Catering for 5 – 12 year olds

Last week at MAC we had fantastic participation in Zumba. The kids got right into it and are now really getting their hips and bodies moving, having learnt the steps. Some of the children have been making comments on what genre of dance they prefer, Salsa seems to be the hit!

The children had a g r e a t l i t t l e competit ion to make the best robot out of all our recycled resources. We all had a go then were given a

score card and rated out of ten each of their peers robot. The skill and creativity was amazing. Last week we were also lucky enough on Friday to take 10 children to participate in Messy Church. This is a great afternoon and the children love being able to attend. Last week we looked at the theme Noah‟s Ark, making paper arks, cardboard box arks, colouring in, play-doh, it was endless. Thank you to the Anglican and Catholic parish for running this activity, we love it! We considered last week as our topic: how we could include the children at MAC and how can we create an even better environment? We are now giving children more jobs (helping hang washing, gardening etc) as this was the first request they made! Maybe it‟s good practise for home! They are also asking to get

some pets, so we discussed we needed something that would be easy to maintain and didn‟t take up too much space. We have agreed on some birds! So our next job is to hunt down a suitable birdcage. The children are keen to begin a vegetable patch including products we eat at MAC! We are trying to collaborate our ideas to design garden beds! So, its all happening at MAC!!!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK TIKKA SALMON

Ingredients 1/4 cup (70g) thick Greek-style yoghurt 3 tbs tikka curry paste 6 salmon cutlets 1 cup (200g) red lentils, rinsed, drained 1/2 tsp ground turmeric 2 tbs sunflower oil 1 red onion, thinly sliced 2 small dried chillies (see note) 1/2 cup fresh curry leaves (see note) 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 1/4 tsp brown mustard seeds 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced Pappadams and mango chutney, to serve

Method Combine yoghurt and curry paste in a

bowl and season. Add salmon, turning to coat, then cover and chill until needed.

Place lentils, turmeric and 4 cups (1L) water in a pan. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes until lentils are soft but retain some texture. Set aside.

Place 1 tbs oil in a pan over medium heat. Cook onion for 2-3 minutes, stirring, until softened. Stir in chillies, curry leaves, spices, garlic and 1/2 tsp salt, then cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir into lentils.

Heat remaining 1 tbs oil in a pan. Cook fish for 2-3 minutes each side until almost cooked, but still rare in the centre.

Divide dahl and salmon among plates. Serve with pappadams and chutney

MERRIWA RINGER PHOTO COMPETITION The theme for July was “Night Time” and anyone who has tried to take photos after dark would have realised that this theme was more challenging than it first appeared. A huge congratulations to all the brave photographers who tackled this subject and entered some excellent photos, but when Elizabeth Titulaer‟s star trail entry arrived in my inbox, I was pretty sure I was looking at the winner. Elizabeth has won a prize donated by Merriwa Sports Club. For anyone interested; a star trail photo is made when you set your camera up on a tripod and open the shutter for a long period, usually between 2 and 8 hours, capturing all the light movement that happens during that time. The lines of colour are actually the paths taken by the stars in that period. If you also look closely at Elizabeth‟s winning photo you will notice a

shooting star in the bottom left hand corner, the one beam of light that doesn't follow the rest. The next theme is “All That‟s Cold” - get creative! Frosts, freezers and ice are a great place to start in your search for inspiration. This theme will be sponsored by ZanneArt Photography who is supply a $50 Visa Card for the winner. ROAD TRIPPIN’ WITH KIRK & CO With the continuing rain we decided to do all the touristy things around Cairns and spent one day on the skylift to Kuranda. I have a phobia for heights and can‟t say this was incredibly exciting, especially with your eyes shut. We had two hours to fill in the village of Kuranda, spending lots and then headed out to the Reforestation Park.

The kids got to interact with animals, the m o s t s i g n i f i c a n t being a 5m c r o c o d i l e called Jack the

Ripper, named such as he killed all twelve females that they tried mating with him so needless to say, he is now destined to fill the rest of his duration in captivity as a bachelor. We toured the park‟s lagoon in an ex-army duck. These are amphibious World War II boats with wheels and was pretty exciting considering the lack of wildlife in the lagoon. We learnt about the Pamagiir aboriginal culture as they performed traditional dances and demonstrated boomerang and spear throwing as well as didgeridoo playing. We then headed back to Cairns on the Kanundra Steam Train, built over 120 years ago. Early the next morning in drizzling rain we set out in a 40 foot sail boat to Pinnacle Reef near Green Island. I love sailing but had to dose up on motion sickness tablets. On the way out we saw dolphins and sharks which added to the excitement, especially for Ashley‟s first dive. I had previously snorkeled around Hayman Island and found in comparison, Pinnacle Reef lacked colour and although there was lots of tropical fish, there weren‟t many varieties. We filled two hours at Green Island, which was overpriced and not particularly exciting. On the return sail the boys got to steer the boat and Rhys also helped with the rigging and a few lucky ones got a quick glimpse of a hump backed whale.

Not happy with park crocodiles, John and I decided to charter a boat just outside the Daintree village and headed up the river to photograph crocs in the wild. We found several females and their babies. We then headed over to Atherton to the Crystal Caves and saw the largest amethyst geode in the world, weighing 2.7tonnes and spent time at the Butterfly Sanctuary which was just awesome. The last leg of the trip we did on our own, as Ashley flew back to Condobolin (minus her luggage) and Kate, Les and the kids headed home early. We slowly headed back down the coast starting with Paranella Park, a fantastic castle ruin built in 1935 and Queenslands first hydro powered estate. We pulled into Lucinda Beach where the devastation from Cyclone Yasi was still evident. There was a 7km conveyor belt which transported sugarcane for export, that was still out of production although they hoped it would be operational by August. Thanks to the idiotically patient Navman, we managed to circumnavigate Mt Beerbarrum, which was quite spectacular at sunset from all angles. I had to turn it off, as John was starting to argue with it, and got out the old map book. We camped in National Parks and were repeatedly attacked by possums and bush turkeys and with the continuing rain, we planned the remainder of our trip around relatives, so that the days of camping were limited. In reflection, in every place we have been, the different cultures, the friendly and not so friendly people we have met, there was no place more wonderful than heading down the hill into Merriwa. OUR WATER SUPPLY NEEDS TESTING NOW

Our Merriwa Plateau groundwater supply, that is the envy of many communities, comes from aquifers that are roughly 50 metres below the ground surface of the plateau. About 200 metres below them is the Oxley Basin, which is an offshoot of the Great Artesian Basin that supplies most of Australia‟s underground water. Unfortunately not a great deal is known about the Oxley Basin, its extent or capacity. The Office of Water has stated that it is an excellent water resource. We can agree with this, as can the many farmers who have used it for irrigation over the years. Bunnan is also located on the Merriwa Plateau.

At a recent meeting of the Save Bunnan committee, residents called for much more research to be done on the Oxley Basin as a matter of urgency. They are organising a hydrogeology expert to look at the bores in and around Bunnan, so baseline tests of the water quantity and quality can be carried out. Then, if coal seam gas or coal mining companies want to expand their activities in the district, there are baseline standards already in place. Before they are given the

Government green light to proceed, the onus should be on these companies to prove scientifically and without question, that their activities will not in any way impinge on the quality or quantity of the local water supply. There have been so many instances of aquifer pollution that on the Merriwa Plateau we can take no chances whatsoever. Merriwa Healthy Environment Group calls on Government at all levels, to support baseline testing of existing aquifers, particularly the waters supplying Merriwa Plateau, as a matter of urgency. It‟s all very well to say in five years‟ time, “this water is terrible, it‟s nothing like it used to be”. If qualified hydrogeologists don‟t measure its quality and quantity now, with scientific accuracy, then all the complaints in the world will just fall on deaf ears. We won‟t be able to prove a thing. FIRST WORKING BEE AT THE SHOW GROUND

Merriwa Show members turned out on Saturday for the first working bee at the Showground, to prepare it for the massive renovation project to take place in early September. We were joined by CWA ladies and Pony Club representatives, who took it in turns to help with clearing out heaps of rubbish and unwanted items from the CWA kiosk building. This is one of the areas that will be completely upgraded in the renovation project. Saturday was just the first of several working bees that need to happen before the main action takes place. We urge all community organisations, particularly those that use the Showground, to take part in the working bees. Many hands make light work.

Merriwa 2012 Springtime Show, a Coal & Allied community project, is rapidly approaching – it‟s only six weeks away! Still, there‟s enough time to prepare your exhibits for the pavilion, or your pets, livestock or produce. Don‟t forget to water your vegetables and give them some extra nourishment - there‟s a prize for the biggest pumpkin, and rumour has it that it will be hotly contested this year!

One of the best patronised events at Merriwa Show is the steer ride events for juniors and seniors. The steer rides will start on Saturday September 15, in the main arena at 5.30pm.

They promise to be bigger and better than last year. The program starts with competitors aged 5 to 8 years. As you might expect, they don‟t exactly ride steers - Sheep Un-decorating is the go for them. It‟s a lot of fun to watch and the boys and girls don‟t have too many physical challenges. Then competition starts to get more serious, with steer riding for the 8 and under 11 years, 11 and under 14 years, and 14 and under 18 years sections. Prize money for these classes goes up with age, so that the 8-11‟s are competing for a total of $50.00 while the 14 to 18‟s have $100.00 up for grabs. Then the adults take over and they compete for $1000.00 prize money. This action is usually spectacular and keeps the crowds well entertained. All steer ride entries must be in by September 8. To enter, go onto the Show website, www.merriwashow.com.au and download a form, then follow the instructions. All riders under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult when entering, and all riders must sign a waiver before riding. VETERINARY UPDATE WITH ANTHEA

With the way the year is flying by us all, we just want to remind all cat owners that the breeding season is getting closer which results in an exceptional number of unwanted kittens. Just remember that kittens are all cute & cuddly until they grow up. This is when you need to take responsibility & have them desexed so that you can enjoy them a lot longer knowing that they are not out & about breeding more unwanted kittens. It also helps reduce the spread of infectious diseases amongst cats, including flu (Feline Aids).

We try our hardest to keep up to date with our vaccination reminders, however, should you feel that we have missed your dog/cat please give us a call and we can double check and hopefully get your animal back on track with its prevention! Worming of your pets (and in the jar this week there is certainly something to pop in & have a look at up close, as it is huge). If you have maintained your worming consistently with a good wormer then you should not

have seen too many of these!!!!!!!! We have wormers in stock so call in today. Not only is it important to worm/drench your animals regularly, but also remember rotating your drench along with paddock rotation helps break worm life cycles.

HEART OF THE COUNTRY EXHIBITION On Friday 27 July, six local artists with a passion for rural Australia hosted an opening night for their “heART of the Country Exhibition” at Coolah‟s Pandora Gallery. The champagne flowed as the gallery filled to capacity with more than 50 guests, from as far away as Queensland, attending the event. The art was a diverse collection including several mediums all with a rural theme and with over 60 pieces of art on display, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Works included rural landscape photography by Candice O‟Neill, who‟s “Sunshine on a Rainy Day” and “Rotherwood Rams” series were greatly appreciated by the crowd that attended on opening night. Suzie Kirk exhibited a range of painting and photography. Her “Silhouette Series” and her cross cut saws were very popular with gallery patrons. Ellen Taylor exhibited a range of paintings and drawings which displayed great depth and fine detail that delighted the crowd, in particular, her study of native flora. 14 year old Tom McAlister displayed several metal sculpture pieces, of which, his “Nut Bowl” received rave reviews. Rebecca Hopkins also displayed sculpture, but of the clay variety,

her leaf sculpture was admired by several people on opening night. Lana Grant also displayed photography which captured the audience‟s attention with great depth of colour. Many patrons commented on the vivid rural images, stating “the colours are captivating.” Candice O‟Neill said “I am overwhelmed by the amount of interest and community support we have received. I am also very grateful to the team at Pandora‟s for giving us the opportunity to exhibit our works, as well as all the help and guidance they provided in putting the collection together.” If you missed out on the opening night celebrations, don‟t despair! The exhibition will run during normal gallery opening times up until the 17 August. Most artworks are available for purchase and many of the artists accept commission jobs within their fields and also have prints of their works available for purchase, just in case you weren‟t quick enough to snap up your favourite original. MUSINGS WITH MAX Classically, inflation is the result of “Too much money chasing too few goods” and history shows it can have catastrophic results. There are only four ways in which a Government can raise money, i.e. (1) Taxation (unpopular with voters) (2) Charging for services such as water, roads and electricity (also unpopular, particularly if charged at true cost: Think electricity) (3) Borrowing (disastrous if in excess: Think Greece and many other countries, and that excessive borrowing is the prime cause of the GFC) (4) Set the printing presses rolling and print money. It is sobering to consider the last option in its historical context, since many countries are doing exactly this right now, though today by a more acceptable euphemism, “Quantitative Easing”. If Spain, Italy or wherever cannot stump up a few billion dollars to pay an instalment on its loans other Euro countries feel they must give it to them for fear the whole Euro system will collapse, but where can they get it? The solution is simple, just print it, even though the result will be a few billion extra euros which will be chasing precisely the same amount of goods. There have been many examples of hyper inflation, a recent one being Zimbabwe, though the classic example is still Germany after WW1. The Allies saddled Germany with enormous reparation payments which were far beyond her capacity to pay, so she printed vast quantities of paper money. My old stamp album from my youth includes many overprinted German stamps from that era. As an example, one which was originally issued as a 200 mark stamp has been overprinted 2 million, another from 5 marks also to 2 million, i.e. inflation had reduced the value of the mark by 10,000 times in the first example, the second no doubt later example by 400,000. Imagine that in 1918 you were retired with a

handy 2 million marks in the bank and a comfortable fixed pension. Before long all you could now buy with your 2,000,000 marks is a 200 mark stamp, and as inflation worsened no more than a 5 mark stamp, so your cash and pension are now both worth virtually nothing. On pay day workers literally took their almost worthless paper money away in barrows and rushed to spend it because prices were rising by the day, by the hour, and, finally, even by the minute. Anyone with assets in such as land or shares etc. was reasonably safe, but those with cash, fixed pensions, bonds or similar were ruined, they had almost nothing. Unsurprisingly, ever since then the Germans have been paranoid about inflation, and it is now generally accepted that the misery hyperinflation created in Germany was a big factor in the rise of Hitler and WW2, since Germany was in such a desperate state that the Germans felt anything, even Hitler, must be better than what they had. Little did they know!! It was not difficult to control inflation in Australia between the two wars, particularly after the Depression began in 1929, because while there may not have been many goods around there was not much money either. However, during WW2 there was plenty of money (wages) chasing too few goods because our industries were producing bombs and bullets to send to Germany and Japan and building aircraft to deliver them, none of them for sale to Australians!! Therefore strict controls were imposed on the price of almost everything, including shares and land. However, after the war when people no longer felt it unpatriotic to shop on the black market at prices far above the controlled ones, the price dam burst. We had a socialist government at

the time which tried to maintain controls for years after the war, even till 1949 when Menzies won an election on his promise to abolish petrol rationing. I recall one landholder in this district who sold his first class property after the war for a cheque for its controlled value and the promise of a big wad of cash for the balance after delivery of the property. When the time came and he asked for his cash the buyer looked him straight in the eye and said: “What cash? I do not know what you are talking about. That would be illegal and I certainly would never do anything like that!!”. As courts will not uphold an illegal act, that was that, and the owner finished up on a small property towards the coast worth, I thought, about half that of his original property. When controls on the sale of land were finally removed property prices rose sharply. I also recall that the overseer on a property I was working on about 1949 had received a handsome bequest from a will at the time land controls were abolished, however he dithered for more than a year as to what he should buy, and finished up with a property worth far less than what he could have bought initially. Therefore, for many reasons, inflation is to be feared. However, we have few effective means to fight it except common sense and good government policy, so some years ago a wise (for once) Federal Government took interest rates, one of the few effective anti-inflationary weapons we do have, out of the hands of politicians and gave it to the Reserve Bank, which has held that power ever since and mostly, but not always, used it wisely with monthly reviews. Next week, Australia‟s worst bout of inflation.

Merriwa Pre-school is now advising the community that you may phone and place your child's details on the waiting list for 2013. Parents of children who may have special or additional needs are needed to make contact as early as possible so that any possible funding and support can be organised within the service. We are currently opened 5 days per week. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are set aside for children who will attend school the following year (2014), while Tuesdays and Thursdays are for our younger 2 - 3 year olds. Please be advised that we already have a substantial waiting list. Attendance for 2-3 year olds is limited to one day per week in 2013. Parents are most welcome to drop in. ST. DAVID’S UNTING CHURCH NEWS Hi! I am Pastor Ross Neville, I will be writing an occasional news item for Merriwa Ringer from now on. On Friday afternoon, after school, we had Messy Church at the Anglican Hall and Church. This was a fun time making craft, then a short interactive multimedia worship session followed by a tea together. It was good to see families working and talking together. Anyone can come. Don‟t miss Friday 31 August. Yes this is church. It is church that includes all the essential elements of what we can call worship. Fun, fellowship, encouragement, teaching and praising God. Messy church is actually a movement that is spreading around the world. The theme on Friday was „new beginnings‟. God gives all of life opportunities to start again and we created models of the Ark and all the animals that were saved in that flood event so that life could begin again. We can see new beginnings in the crops and buds starting to form on the plants around the district at the moment and it reminds us of the ways God is always giving us opportunities to change and start again. Next month we are

exploring the idea about how Jesus can provide the sap and energy to live a new life. I have been in Adelaide at the Uniting church triannual national conference for a week. At the conference we looked at how Australians are allowing the Aboriginals in Australia to have a new beginning. There is a movement to have them recognized in our Australian constitution. Do you know what aboriginal tribal area Merriwa is in? How can we honour and help the descendants of the original first peoples in the Upper Hunter? More next time. Merriwa St. David‟s is part of the Upper Hunter Ministry group of the Uniting Church and we have myself or Rev. Steve Rowe taking services. UPPER HUNTER VETERAN’S GOLF Noel Kelly‟s excellent nett score of 64 won him the Veterans‟ novelty par 3 stroke event over twenty-four holes at Aberdeen golf course on Tuesday, 24 July. There were 21 players and the runner-up was Ron Bartush on 68. Thanks to all the Aberdeen volunteers who had the many temporary teeing grounds clearly marked and the course generally in great fettle. The putting prize went to Rod Auld with 35 putts. MERRIWA JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE Under 8‟s Under 8‟s travelled to Aberdeen to play Scone Red last weekend. With a couple of boys out sick and away our remaining boys played an exceptional game against a tough team. With the boys slowly and steadily starting to communicate and work together as a team they showed us a wonderful game of football. A lot better in their defence and some tremendous plays by Christian and Will. We even saw an almighty jump and dive from Charles, my goodness it was a sight, but well done Charles on your effort. Their continued efforts at training is starting to show, keep up the good work. Player of the Match this week went to Christian, well done.

Zoe Jamieson Under 12's Well you would have never seen more prouder parents and grandparents at this weeks game against Morpeth. With a 'never say never' attitude, ten dedicated Under 12's players ran out on the field to take on Morpeth's team of 18 players. The boys started out strong working well together in defence. There was some great yards made by many of the players including Mikey, Jack, Ben K, Digger and Thomas. Making solid tackles was most important with the overlap in numbers and Merriwa did some of the best tackling I've seen in the competition so far, with some awesome one on ones made by Kasey, Ben N and Logan. Bailey did well keeping the team inspired and setting up the plays. Just when we thought the boys were running out of puff they still kept chasing, with Locky making a huge effort to chase down a Morpeth player. This sent a message to the other team

that these guys no matter how few there were, were not going to give up. At half time one of the Morpeth players was heard saying "I told you it wasn't going to be easy". Despite going down 26-8 Merriwa did us proud. This week's Coaches Award went to Mikey, Inspirational Tackler was Logan and Man of the Match was Jack. Well done boys, you should be extremely proud of the way you played on the weekend. Keep up the good work.

LADIES GOLF Last Wednesday teams of 3 ladies and one of four, rocked up for a 3 BBB - 3 ball best ball - competition. Each team member played an individual Stableford event but the team scored by taking the best of the 3 scores for each of the 18 holes. Team 1, Jane, Julia and Robyn hit off first followed by Team 2, Dinie, Didi and Gai, then team 3, the “Dream Team” Merrie, De, Tania and Diedre. The winning team is able to go on to Merewether to compete. Team one set a cracking pace and all contributed to the team score. Julia performed a Cirque Du Soleil shot on the 13th when her second shot landed at the base of a currajong tree. Lining up the shot she executed a perfect parabola when the ball literally ran straight up the trunk of the tree, flew over our heads and ran down the opposite tree. Spectacular to watch. Team 2 executed some amazing shots but had the run around from their buggy. Actually it just stopped running around leaving them to bravely gather sticks in their arms and soldier on which they did with great results. Team 3 won the day with an astronomical 40 points from De Patterson. Runner up was Jane Hegarty from Team 1 on a PB of 37 points, and very fittingly, Julia won the ball draw. On Friday Merrie, Tania, Dinie and Gai played in the veteran competition at Horizons. The course was a treat to play on and it was a beautifully organised day. No golf trophies came home but Merrie won the raffle - a bottle of Moet! Very happy golfing.

MERRIWA GOLF CLUB NEWS The Merriwa Golf Club held their annual open day on Sunday 29 July. We had a good field of 60 players, coming from the following clubs: Aberdeen, Bulahdelah, Charlestown, Coolah, Denman, Kurri, Maitland, Merriwa, Murrurundi, Muswellbrook, Scone, Singleton and Toronto. I wish to sincerely thank all of our sponsors, our lady golfers that did a wonderful job on the BBQ and refreshment hut, the ladies that did the starting, sold raffle tickets, sent cakes and slices, prepared high tea, to our volunteers for mowing and preparing the greens, all of the committee for their continued support.
