His Dad is a 3rd Generation Farmer in Alamo and his mother is an OB Nurse for the last 25 years at Mercy Medical. In 2005 Tanner graduated from Williston High School. He then obtained a Bachelors of Science in Commercial Aviation and Aeronautics from the University of North Dakota. After graduation from the University, Tanner worked as a flight instructor and pilot of Western Edge Aviation. As a pilot Tanner had the opportunity to perform tour flights of the area with Oil Industry Executives from all over the world. These investors understood the value of seeing the entire Bakken and understanding the bigger picture. While in College Tanner learned a lot more than how to fly a plane, Tanner was enrolled in a large number of business classes and accounting classes. Learning how to successfully run an aviation company was just as important to the program as flying the aircrafts. One of Tanner’s other hobbies in life is taking photos. Tanner has enjoyed this for many years. In 2009 he was asked to take some aerial photos for a client. He quickly accepted the mission and was on his way. With a little research he found that the nearest aerial photographer was in Fargo. So Tanner decided to put all his training, education, and desires to the test of small business ownership, which many of us know is not a small or easy task. But none the less a few purchases, a new web site, some business cards off the press and Tanner was in Business with Overland Aerial Photography. Tanner is now busy taking pictures of construction sites, oil wells, farms, and anything else a customer may ask for a few shutter clicks of. One of his pictures has been used on a billboard in the Denver area. I found Tanner’s rate to be very inexpensive starting out at just $375. Aerial photography is a great way to get a better perspective of a project or a piece of land, maybe one of the most accurate ways to see progression on a construction project, and makes for an impressive piece on the wall to talk about. Many of us are here for this boom, to be part of something that we may never have the chance to be part of again. These types of booms are what the U.S. History is made of and the people who lived them have become legends. I encourage each person on the Bakken to remind themselves what they are part of. What is happening here on the Bakken is as American as it comes. Not only are we working a hard days work for a good wage, we are making a better life for our families, we are taking the opportunity to restart, we are building one of the strongest economies, we are helping hold up a hurt nation, and we are assisting our nation to become less dependent on the oil of the middle east. Tanner Overland was born right here in Williston back in 1987. His Dad is a 3rd Generation Farmer in Alamo and his mother is an OB Nurse for the last 25 years at Mercy Medical. Wacky NewsIf you’ve ever driven around Dallas, chances are you’ve paid a vig to the North Texas Toll Authority. Since the NTTA lacks police powers, it’s had trouble collecting tolls that went unpaid — and today, turned to naming and shaming 25,000 of its worst offenders. The surprise? Twenty-two drivers owe more than $100,000 in unpaid tolls and penalties — with the list topped by a Dallas woman whose bill stands at $179,596.43. That’s a Texas-sized bill in any state.

Sam’s ShoesOwner- Sam Kitzenberg

Years ago people in North Western North Dakota bought their shows from Leeland Kitzenberg Jr. at H&H Shoes of Williston. For nearly 10 years Leeland’s Son Sam worked for him in the store. H&H is gone now and many people buy their shoes from national franchises or Wal-Mart. But Sam has come back to the family business to show people that there is a better way.

Sam has invested his time and money to open up Sam’s Shoes in the Heddricks building in down town Williston. After years of teaching in the public school system, Sam has decided to rebuild the family business and provide comfortable quality shoes to the area.

Sam said that his largest obstacle in opening the new store was the availability of affordable retail space. He said he looked at several locations but most landlords were asking much more than was feasible for his start up business. He said that all changed when he met Loye Ashton (DDS) who worked with him and ended up providing a beautiful space for his new store. For those of you, who have not met Mr. Ashton he has been a great attribute to downtown Williston.

Sam is working with American Made shoe manufacturers to provide a full line up of women’s and men’s shoes. Sam says he will be focusing on quality and comfort, while trying to keep most of his shoes with American Companies. While at the store, Sam explained that he was waiting for a new shipment of SAS shoes, San Antonio Shoes is an American Made Shoe Company dedicated to manufacturing quality and comfortable shoes. Sam was very

excited about the new line of shoes, what happens to be the brand that he brought to Williston over 20 years ago when he worked for his dad.

Sam is working to provide a full line of women’s and men’s shoes, while focusing on quality and comfort. SUBSCRIPTION

The Williston City Commission is implementing a ban on people living in recreational vehicles outside of a designated RV park. Campers in residential areas will have to relocate by Sept. 1, and RVs in commercial or industrial areas will have until Nov. 1. The penalty for violating the ordinance is a $500 fine for each day of noncompliance.

The boom in the western North Dakota oil patch has created a housing shortage, forcing many people to live in campers. But officials say the hundreds of RVs parked around the city create health and safety hazards. Several RV parks are under construction in the Williston area. Some RV dwellers say the rent will be too steep.

Williston’s Temporary Bypass Nearly OpenSemis passing through Williston is an every day thing, but help is on the way. The ND Department of Transportation is working on a bypass that will help alleviate some of the truck traffic, but it’s only in the planning stages.

For the time being, there will be a temporary bypass, and it is nearing completion.

The roads are being widened, and slopes are being added to make sure the bypass is up to safe standards. But crews have run into some trouble during construction. Rock fields were found in the middle of the roadway, where more base material was added to cover those areas.

The bypass isn`t officially open yet, but Williston residents says they are looking forward to its opening for one reason. Safety.

Once the temporary bypass opens, truck drivers will be led to their new route. Permanent

signing will be up that directs them to use the new bypass.

The DOT says residents will notice a difference once the temporary bypass opens.

The temporary bypass is scheduled to be done by August 1.

A few years ago, you probably wouldn’t catch anyone camping in North Dakota during the cold winter months. But that’s not the case anymore.

Many job seekers travelling to the state are looking for the most economical way to live… a car, camper, converted van or recreation vehicle.

The newcomers have resorted to the lifestyle because of the extreme housing shortage and high rental costs in the oil patch. But help is on the way.

Two new RV Parks will be offering reduced rates to qualified people – primarily those that have moved to the area without arranging permanent housing and those that will no longer be able to park within Williston. The city’s ban on RV parking in residential areas begins September 1 while campers in commercial and industrial areas have until November 1 to move out.

Both of the new RV sites expect to be open for business by September 1, 2012.

One of the developments, pending approval from the Williams County Commission, will be located four miles north of Williston. It will have about 400 RV pads. The other site will be located 13 miles north of Williston. It will have 216 RV stalls. That project has been approved by the county.

The developers say they understand the dire need for reasonable RV parking rates. They believe that they are going to provide an affordable remedy for those who have not planned as well. Williston Economic Development.

Oil production in North Dakota rose to a record high just under 640,000 barrels-per-day in May, reinforcing the Midwest state’s position as the second-largest oil producer in the country, behind Texas.

North Dakota’s oil output rose about 30,000 bpd from April levels, monthly data from the state Industrial Commission showed. Output has doubled in the last two years alone.

Most of the gains came from the Bakken and Three Forks shale prospects, where production rose to just above 574,000 bpd in May, the data showed.

Favorable weather and a ramp up in drilling led to the increase. There were over 6,950 wells drilling for oil in May, according to state data.

North Dakota, located along the Canadian border, has upended the U.S. oil market since 2007 after the controversial fracking technology, combined with horizontal drilling, unlocked the oil bounty trapped in tight rock formations.

Thanks to this oil boom, the state has the lowest unemployment rate in the United States, at 3 percent in May, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The frenzied drilling has brought the state a hefty budget surplus, as much as $1 billion between 2009-2011, according to Moody’s. This had ignited a movement to abolish property taxes, voted down by lawmakers in June. Reuters

A million people in North Dakota by 2030 and a million barrels of oil per day by 2015 are possible. That was the theme at the three-day Williston Basin Petroleum Conference. North Dakota continues to lay plans to maintain a quality of life for a million barrels of oil a day and a million people. It is possible to do it while maintaining a quality of life.

The McKenzie County Job D e v e l o p m e n t Authority says they don’t know if North Dakota will reach either of those plateaus. It will have a lot to do with what is happening in other parts of the country. Reaching the 1 million barrels per day is based on several factors.

One is rig counts. Currently, there are more than 200 rigs operating in the Bakken and the department expects that to increase in the future. Hydraulic fracturing and the price of oil are indicative of how many rigs will be operating.

Changes in federal policy could also impact oil production. One million barrels per day as a possible scenario. The probable scenario is 800,000 barrels a day. As long as the oil prices stay where they are at the oil patch we will be able to handle higher oil

production. The prices would have to drop significantly to put a hamper on oil production.

There are 345 million barrels of oil in reserve; 46 percent of it coming from the Williston Basin. There are an estimated 6,000 drilling opportunities in the northern Rockies; an estimated 2,500 known about in the Williston Basin. PBM

Unscramble the first four words in each set of s c r a m b l e s . Then use the circled letters to unscramble the final word. Some of the words may unscramble into more that one word, but only one word is related to the puzzle.

But how do I do it?

The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and 3x3 box must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once. What could be simpler?

When a community faces a disaster, it’s important to have an all-star team onsite to help provide fast relief. Much like with disaster relief efforts, speed is essential in baseball and pain relief.

That’s why All-Star Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher CC Sabathia teamed up with the makers of Bayer(R) Advanced Aspirin to issue the Fast Relief Challenge, which will help support the American Red Cross and its efforts to provide fast relief to Americans in need.

The Fast Relief Challenge turns “clicks” into fast relief for communities who need it most. For every person who visits www.FastReliefChallenge.com and clicks on the Red Cross button, the makers of Bayer Advanced Aspirin will donate $2 to the American Red Cross (up to a total of $100,000).

“As a pitcher, I know fast relief plays an important role in baseball, but it is just as important for disaster relief efforts and pain relief. That’s why I’m working with the makers of Bayer Advanced Aspirin, the ‘Official Pain Reliever of Major League Baseball,’ to raise donations for the American Red Cross,” said CC Sabathia, All-Star pitcher. “Helping others has always been really

important to me, especially when I know even the smallest actions can help families in need. A quick click on a website is all it takes to help the American Red Cross provide fast relief to communities who need it most.”

And what would a challenge be without a little friendly competition? Consumers can also enter the Fast Relief Sweepstakes for the chance to win tickets to a Major League Baseball game, $50,000 for their local Red Cross chapters and a year’s supply of Bayer Advanced Aspirin for fast relief.

FINAL TOUCH CLEANING

Home & Garden

What makes an outdoor party great? It’s simple: Keep guests comfortable.

When friends and family gather at your place for a party this summer, what will they remember most about your backyard? The lovely landscaping and delicious food you served. Make that lasting impression a positive one by creating an outdoor environment that’s both comfortable and enjoyable.

Refreshments An easy way to set the party mood is by choosing a menu appealing to everyone. Casual or formal, food can be easy to prepare and enjoyable for everyone to eat. Consider your guest list and the event

that you may be celebrating. Be aware of common food allergies as well as any vegetarian or vegan friends. Make your menu simple by providing guests with a little variety and by relying on fresh produce. Locally grown fruits and veggies are abundant this time of year and are appealing to most people - even dieters.

Drinks are essential to great outdoor entertaining as well. Whether you are entertaining children or adults, the drinks you choose can set the mood. A signature drink is always fun. Try refreshing lemonade for the kids or a festive sangria for adults. Also, be sure to provide lots of ice-cold water.

Seating Nothing is more inviting than a comfortable seating area. Offer shady areas to help establish comfy conversations and be sure to provide ample seating for all your guests. As long as the surfaces are clean and sturdy, a cushion can always be added for a little extra comfort.

Lighting Nothing sets the tone of a party better than lighting. This important element can make a world of difference. Candles or torches can do double duty by providing soft, illuminating light and helping to keep bugs at bay. Purchase candles or oils with citronella to discourage mosquitoes from making an appearance. In addition, solar lights or battery-powered lanterns can bring some much-needed illumination to dark corners of the yard. Strings of electric twinkle lights can make the less-remote areas sparkle for guests as well.

In anticipation of a big event, you’ve compiled the guest list, pulled together a menu, made sure there was enough seating, set the mood with lighting and gotten rid of the uninvited pests. Let the partying begin. ARA

The Bakken’s Best Barbecueand Williston’s

Favorite Caterer!

Food/Dining

The opening of Gordon Ramsay Steak is super-huge, probably the biggest celebrity chef restaurant to hit the Las Vegas Strip in several years. Ramsay’s larger-than-life landing in Las Vegas instantly creates the second biggest draw at Paris (behind the faux Eiffel Tower, of course). But it’s a curious arrival at a critical juncture: Vegas’ food reputation is rising, aspiring to something more than big names and expensive meals. Ramsay is famous to most of us for being a forceful, even angry, TV personality. We know his character—or caricature—more than we know his food. This creates unique expectations for his Vegas steakhouse, probably the most accessible of his U.S. restaurants.

The steaks, which come from New York butcher Pat LaFrieda (just like those at Caesars’ recently opened Old Homestead), are terrific, particularly the juicy ribeye ($56) and the American Kobe rib cap ($58). The starter plates are even better, from chorizo-stuffed, butter-poached Maine lobster ($28) to a delightful, cleanly flavored roasted

beet salad ($18) with creamy ricotta and oyster mushrooms. Signature dishes are also fun and flavorful. Beef Wellington ($52) is cooked perfectly, with both meat and pastry clocking in at luxurious. The loup de mer (sea bass) fish and chips are great at $44. Remember, this is a big-time Strip steakhouse, so be ready to spend.

The best parts are the desserts and the space. The sticky toffee pudding, a dense, moist cake-ish creation done rich with brown butter ice cream nearby, wants to be the top treat in town. It’s a power dessert in a power room, a two-story hideout done in dramatic reds and dark woods, with a mighty Union Jack on the ceiling and a slick bar encased in the Chunnel-like tube.

Ramsay said he’ll be in Vegas every couple of weeks as Gordon Ramsay Steak establishes its footing, then expects to directly oversee his “brigade” at least monthly thereafter. He recently purchased a home in California, and quipped, “It’s great to be able to get here in 15 minutes. I have a private jet.” After a beat, he added, “No, I don’t. Seriously? I’m just kidding.”

Getaway to Lake Sakakawea State ParkLocated on the south shore of Lake Sakakawea, adjacent to Garrison Dam, Lake Sakakawea State Park offers a wide range of water based recreational activities and facilities. The park has a full service marina, including convenience store, fishing guide services and boat and camper storage. For information on

marina services contact Captain Kit’s Marina at 701.487.3600. Two large boat ramps serve the park for access to the best salmon fishing on the lake. The park hosts numerous fishing derbies throughout the summer. The lake itself is one of the three largest man-made reservoirs in the nation. It has a surface area of about 368,000 acres and is 178 miles long, reaching to Williston ND. As part of the Missouri River system, the reservoir was created in the 1950s with the completion of Garrison Dam, one of six main-stem dams built and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control, hydroelectric power, navigation and irrigation.

The park is located 1 mile north of Pick City, North Dakota.

NatureThe 1,293-acre park contains a variety of both natural and planted vegetation types. The natural vegetation types include a mixture of forest and

woodland types that are associated with the lake and valley slopes. Mixed grass prairie is the primary component of the uplands above the lake. There are also shrublands intermixed within the prairie areas. A complex system of shelterbelts and windbreaks exists throughout the park.

The gently rolling prairie, wooded draws and shelterbelts contribute food and a secure habitat for a diverse wildlife community. Visitors may see white-tailed deer, ring-necked pheasants, raccoons, jackrabbits, or perhaps a coyote or fox.

Forty-five of the over 135 birds that may be observed in the park are on the Natural Heritage Inventory’s state rare species list. Some of the rare species include the osprey, whooping crane, golden eagle and northern mockingbird.

TrailsThe park is the terminus of the North Country National Scenic Trail which, when completed, will stretch 4,600 miles from upstate New York to Lake Sakakawea State Park. Several multi-use trails in the park are perfect for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Hikers are encouraged to take in the scenic beauty of the completed segments of the North Country National Scenic Trail found in this park. For more info on ND state parks visit: www.parkrec.nd.gov

Black hills harley davidsonThe Black Hills of South Dakota, is known for many things, but one image comes to most peoples mind and that is a motorcycle humming through a small town along side a scenic highway with the tree covered hills in the back ground. It is not a coincidence that the Black Hills is home to the Sturgis Rally. There are 100’s of miles of good riding to be found here.

I agree with Black Hills Harley Davidson, there is no better way to experience the Black Hills of South Dakota than on the seat of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. For most here in the Williston area, you have not bought a motorcycle or your motorcycle is far from here. Well have no fear; Black Hill Harley Davidson is there to help you out.

Pati Schmidt of Black Hills Harley Davidson, explained to us that they have all sizes and types of bikes ranging from Sportsters to Trikes. Bikes are available from April 1 to October 1, and other than during the rally North Dakota Residents receive the local special of $65 for a 24 hour period. Normal prices are $150 per 24 hour period. Pati explained that all oil workers and oil field service workers working in the Bakken can take advantage of this special. Each rider will need a Driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement and a credit card. You can reserve your bike by calling 1-800-727-2482.

Recipe of the Week

BOSTON CREAM CAKE

Nearly 20% of all vehicles stolen had the keys in them.

serves: 12 cupcakes For the pastry cream1/2 cup sugar • 4 teaspoons cornstarch • Pinch kosher salt • 2 cups milk • 2 large eggsFor the cakes1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 6 tablespoons softened butter • 3/4 cup sugar • 2 large eggs • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon orange zest • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juiceFor the glaze2/3 cup light corn syrup • 2 tablespoons dark rum • pinch kosher salt • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely choppedTo make the pastry creamIn a medium pot, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch and salt. While whisking, pour in the milk. Set pot over medium-low heat and heat mixture to just below boiling. Meanwhile, whisk the eggs in a large bowl. Pour the milk slowly into the eggs, whisking constantly, to temper the eggs. Pour the mixture back in the saucepan. Stir constantly over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens and just begins to simmer. Immediately scrape the mixture into a clean bowl. Let cool slightly, then cover the surface of the pastry cream with plastic wrap. Refrigerate several hours or overnight, until chilled and thickened. To make the cakesPreheat oven to 350. Line a 12-space cupcake pan with paper liners. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt onto a piece of parchment. In a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, mixing well between additions. Mix in the olive oil, vanilla and zest. Beat on high speed for 2 minutes to lighten and smooth the batter. On low speed, mix in the flour in 3 additions, alternating with the orange juice, beginning and ending with the flour. Once everything has been added, beat the batter on high speed for about 20 seconds. Divide the batter evenly in the cupcake liners. Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, about 20 to 25 minutes. To make the glazeIn a small pot, combine the corn syrup, rum, salt and 2 tablespoons water. Bring to a boil, simmer until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Put the chopped chocolate in a heat-proof bowl. Pour the syrup over the chocolate and stir until the glaze is smooth and shiny and all of the choco-late is melted. Let cool until thickened and just warm to the touch. To assemble the cakesRemove cupcake liners from the cakes. With a serrated knife, split the cakes at the base of the muffin top. To serve, place the muffin top on a plate, top with some of the pastry cream, then the cupcake base. Drizzle with the chocolate glaze, letting it run down the sides of the cake. Repeat with remaining cakes, pastry cream and glaze.

This Week in HistoryOn this day in 1974, the House Judiciary Committee recommends that America’s 37th president, Richard M. Nixon, be impeached and removed from office. The impeachment proceedings resulted from a series of political scandals involving the Nixon administration that came to be collectively known as Watergate. Evidence clearly implicated him in a cover up of the Watergate break-in. On August 8, Nixon announced his resignation, becoming the first president in U.S. history to voluntarily leave office. After departing the White House on August 9, Nixon was succeeded by Vice President Gerald Ford.

31Spotlight BusinessLeon’s JewelryA Piece for a Gentleman

Recently I walked into a Jewelry store in Downtown Williston. I don’t know why I went in nor do I know what I was looking for, like most men Jewelry stores can feel uncomfortable and daunting. However, I stumbled upon a product that I can’t live without.

When you catch a glance of it, you may call it a pocketknife but once you hold it and examine it you will stutter to find a better name for it. Leathermans and Old Timers will always hold a spot in my heart, as I remember growing up watching my grandfather each night sharpening his oldtimer.

The product that I am speaking of is created by a company named William Henry. According to their web site, William Henry is devoted to the vision of designing and building the finest tools possible. Founded in 1997 by partners Mattew William Conable and Michael Henry Honack. William Henry has grown from a one-man shop to a 20 person company that has established a new benchmark of excellence.

“The seamless integration of classic natural materials and state-of-the-art alloys is a hallmark of William Henry’s work — no compromises, no shortcuts, and exceptional quality. Each component is precision machined to tolerances reserved for aerospace level

work — often measured at 0.0005”, or one-twelfth the size of a human hair.

The final fit, finish, action, and sharpness of each knife are achieved entirely by hand, employing the irreplaceable craftsmanship developed by generations of master cutlers.” – You can’t ask for more. This is not the proper piece for every man but this is the proper knife for a GENTLEMAN.

“Every pocket knife we make is a distinctive heirloom-quality testament to the art of knife making. Each piece takes more than seven months to produce, and incorporates the work of more than 30 artisans across 800 individual operations.“

Leon’s Jewelry in downtown Williston sells William Henry Knives, Pens, and Money Clips. They have a great selection and are fairly priced. Perfect for a father’s day present.

Warning: Dangerous SpeciesFound In North Dakota

The Department of Non-Fish nor Game has issued a Dangerous Species Alert for the Bakken Oil Fields. Sited throughout the area, this newly found specie seems to be an evolution of the already aggressive Dodge Rams. The adaptations appear to make the Dodge Ram more aggressive, with more power and style allowing it to conquer all terrrain in it’s path. The new specie has yet to be named by the department and only referred to as Specie X but locals are referring it as the Rocky Ridge.

Disclaimer: The Department of Non-Fish nor Game is not a real agency of the State or Federal Government. No individual should seriously be scared or threatened if they find themselves in the presence of a Rocky Ridge Dodge Ram or any other Dodge Ram.
