The Wetland Energy Project
Newsletter №
Implementation of new concepts for wet peatland management for the sustainable production of
energy pellets from biomass produced and harvested from wet and rewetted peatlands.
“Wetland Energy” is an international environmental
project which is funded by the EC and started end of
2010. It investigates an approach for the sustainable
utilization of rewetted peatlands (Paludicultur) in
Belarus. A consortium of German and Belarusian
scientists and the peat briquetting factory in Lida region,
Grodno Voblast, Belarus, is implementing the project.

On Tuesday and Wednesday 18th and 19th of March
2014 a workshop was held on Technology for harvesting
grass biomass in wet peatlands and the processing of this
biomass for pellets or briquettes. Place of the event has
been at international Environmental Sakharov University
(ISEU) in Minsk and the ISEU outpost in Volma. Two
approaches were demonstrated by the Belarussian
companies Bluming LtD. and the agricultural machine
producer “Gomselmash“ from Gomel. The machine of
Bluming LtD. (see Newsletter No2) is based on low
pressure balloon tyres. It shows excellent trafficabillity
and low ground pressure. This type of machine had been
developed for arctic expeditions and is adapted to the
harsh conditions on ice and wet grounds.
A second approach is based on combine technology for
harvest of corn with a caterpillar tracked vehicle (see NL
No2) for softer soils produced by “Gomselmaš” which
shows high performance in harvesting. The workshop
demonstrated that up to now a readymade solution for
Paludiculture machines does not exist. A challenge of the
project is to combine the advantages of both machines
Newsletter No2)

a) Engineer V. Radkevich of Bluming Ltd. introduces the
possibilities to improve the concept of his machine e.g.
bigger bunker size and improved mowing unit.
b) Wetland harvester “Ratrak” based on snow cat
technology. This technology is applied on the
investigation sites of the wetland energy project in
Sporova. Existing special harvesting machines are not
ripe for commercial application in wet peatlands, they
are individual solutions produced by small enterprises
with low production numbers, low performance and still
much impact on the wet and soft soils.

a) Инженер В.В.

Water from 3 monitoring sites was sampled for further
laboratory analysis of parameters (pH salt, bicarbonates,
calcium, magnesium, sodium + potassium, chlorides,
sulfates, ammonia nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate
nitrogen, phosphates, hardness and salinity).
There were installed sensors (MiniDivers) to measure the
level of peatland water tables and 1 sensor for measuring

The VIP project (Initiative for paludiculture in West
Pomerania) funded by the Federal Ministry for education
and research, Germany (2010 – 2013. The Project
consortium was led by the Paleo and Peatland research
group of Prof. Hans Joosten at Greifswald University.
After successful finalisation the project was awarded in
November 2013 with the German Sustainability Award as
an innovative system solution approach. The German
Sustainability Award is the most important national
award for engagement for sustainability and one of the
most recognized ones on European level. The honouring
demonstrates the relevance of the Paludiculture
approach for tackling environmental challenges in
peatland management and its rising publicity. At this
stage all the more it is important to fill gaps in
knowledge for the broad implementation of
Paludiculture. Research as done within the wetland
energy project yields therefore valuable data and
experience.
