TABLOID SPORTS On the 14th March, the students and staff will be participating in the annual Tabloid Sports Day. The theme of this event will be the Commonwealth Games. The day will begin at 9.10 and the students will be split into 8 MULTI AGE groups. Each group will be assigned a country: 1: Canada 2: Jamaica 3: Kenya 4: South Africa 5: Australia 6: India 7: Fiji 8: Malaysia

It all begins with an opening ceremony, which includes the students walking a lap, saluting the crowd in their country colours.

Each country anthem is played during this.

Senior school leaders are FLAG BEARERS who march at the front with their flag high in the air.

The atmosphere builds!!

Senior Students are selected to read the Olympic OATH

The Olympic flame will be run to its final resting place (front of stage)

Country chanting will take place (1st medals of the day)

The games will be declared open

A live medal tally brings a more competitive element to the day.

Points will be given away throughout the event for Effort, Team Spirit, Energy and most importantly Team Work.

At the conclusion there will be three countries who will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals

Of course it will be a thrilling finish due to creative scoring throughout the day.

Parents, friends and family are more than welcome to come and be part of the Commonwealth Games cheer squad! We will have more information about groups, countries and colours next week so stay tuned.

Yr 6 NEWS We have had another productive week in the grade 6 room. Congratulations to our School Captains for 2018, Savanna and Elias and House Captains, Zane, Neelufa, Kelyn, Taylah, Emily, Tamika, Jacob and Olivia. Leadership is a role we respect and embrace at Colac West Primary School and the whole grade 6 class are demonstrating great leadership skills this year. In Writing this week, we are been looking at the lost art of letter writing. We are very lucky to be pen pals with an Aboriginal school just near Alice Springs and are just about to send our first letters to them. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about different places in Australia, different cultures and the art of letter writing. My class have been working brilliantly and I am so proud of their achievements so far this year.

P/1 NEWS We have been very busy, productive learner this week in Prep/1. The students have been busy learning the process and strategies of our new SMART Spelling program. Each week the students are introduced to a word of the week and a sentence of the week. Over the 5 days, the students learn the meaning of the word and are explicitly taught the sounds and letters of each word. This week our word was ‘cat’ and our sentence was ‘The cat sat on the mat’. The students have had fun creating their own cat on a mat. With great enthusiasm and success, the students have been attempting to successfully write our sentence of the week independently.

4/5 NEWS This week the year 4/5 class have been working hard writing narratives! Creating characters and setting the scene for our stories to take place. Some fantastic stories have been created and we all understand narratives much better now!

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Colac West Primary School is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 7 September 2018. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier. To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Next Wednesday the 7th March, Colac West Primary School will be holding its annual Athletics Carnival. All of the students have been practising various activities in PE in the lead up to the Carnival. Please remind your students to dress in their house colours as it is a great way to create atmosphere. We ask that the students bring their usual playlunch and lunch snacks as there will not be a BBQ on the day. The events will begin at approximately 9 am and continue throughout the day, stopping for breaks at the usual recess and lunch times. Presentation of awards will be held on Friday 9th March at the school Assembly. Please come along and support your students in their events.
