Savvy Saving Seniors

1 out of 5 seniors live in poverty and many more struggle to make ends meet.

The Savvy Saving Seniors program is a strategy to combat senior poverty. The program was developed by the National Council on Aging and is designed to help seniors with limited resources learn how to budg-et, avoid scams, and apply for benefits. Training con-sists of 3 sessions on Thursdays from 1:00-3:00pm in the Carl Manner Rm.

Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) - Assists Medicare recipients, family members, those about to receive Medicare benefits, and disabled adults on Medicare. Nurse— Blood pressure and glucose screening available on 2nd and 4th Wednesday, 9:30-11:00am Podiatry—Meet with Dr. Weiner every 3rd Tuesday of the month from 12:30-1:00pm for a routine checkup. Call Participant Services for an appointment.

Legal Questions— Seniors with legal problems related to housing needs, public benefits, issues related to health care, and some consumer or debt issues can make a 10-minute appointment on the 1st Wednesday of the month. Call Participant Services for an appointment.

Self Defense Class Safety For All Abilities

Every Tuesday starting Oct. 10 from 1:30-2:30,

Each session includes:

Personal self defense assessments Professional instruction in several self defense

skills incl. escapes from grabs and holds Slow, monitored practice of skills individually and

then with partners Role plays with real-life situations Handouts for home study Course materials are age appropriate. With effec-tive self defense skills, students will experience quick increase of personal safety, energy, strength, and empowerment. Register at the Participant Ser-vices.

We need more volunteers to help decorate the Center for Monthly Dinners and special events. Come to the Participant Services to fill out a Volunteer Interest Form.

Volunteers Needed

Basic home maintenance for the elderly will be pro-vided at no charge to seniors who are members of the Florence Douglas Center. Two-person volun-teer teams from Sunset Rotary will visit to perform basic maintenance items in the home that the senior cannot perform. Some of the maintenance items may be:

Replacing lights bulbs in hard- to-reach areas

Changing smoke alarm batteries

Repairing leaky faucets or a toilet tank issue

Blown fuses or resetting the GFI

Please note that services will be limited to basic home maintenance repairs similar to those listed above. A Release of Liability Form needs to be signed prior to maintenance.

Please stop by Participant Services to complete the required form.

Home Maintenance

When you donate a car or vehicle such as an RV or motorcycle, you will be providing much needed support to the Center. In addition you get a tax deduction!

Notary Public is now available on the 1st Tuesday of the month from 9:30 to 11:30am in the Conference Room. Ana Mitchell is also a travelling Notary Public, so if you’re not able to come to the Center, she can meet you at your place. Call Participant Services.

Scrapbooking

Ever wanted to put your photos in a scrapbook? Have a theme in mind? Get those birthday, anniver-sary, wedding, or baby pictures into a scrapbook. Bring all your photos and materials.

There is no instructor available. For experienced scrapbookers only. Come every third Wednesday of the month—$5 per person, 4:00-9:00 pm, CM Room.

Hospice care serves the needs of terminally ill patients and their families using a team-oriented approach to provide expert medical care, focusing on caring, not curing. Hos-pice Volunteers are part of that team.

Our Sunshine Committee consist of volunteer’s who are willing to contact a member or participant in of need sunshine in their life. The Sunshine Committee will send an appropriate card to get well soon, or card to families of bereavement, etc. We will arrange for a visit to spread some cheer or if they would like a phone call.
