As We Gather: English poet Alexander Pope wrote, “To err is human; to

forgive, divine.” This popular saying attributes the acts of erring and forgiving to beings for whom they come naturally. Humans err. God forgives. The opposite is also true. The Sacred Scriptures teach that there is no error in God, nor can there be. On the other hand, forgiveness is unnatural to humanity unless humanity becomes, as Church Father Athanasius once said, “by grace what God is by nature.” This grace is given to us through the person and work of Christ Jesus for our salvation and is exemplified for us both in Jesus’ teaching and in the lives of such saints as Joseph, who forgave his brothers for the malicious wrongs they did to him.

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR SEPT. 6

th, 2020

Welcome:

Special Announcements:

(See Announcements Section)

Invocation: Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy

Spirit. People: Amen.

Page 4: Sept. 6…Sept. 6, 2020 _ The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost Page 2 Welcome to Benicia Lutheran Church Rev. David A. Floyd, Pastor 201 Raymond Drive Benicia, CA 94510 (707) 746-0201

Confession and Absolution: Pastor: With confidence in Christ, let us confess our sins to God our Father. People: Merciful God, You never fail to come to us by Your Word and

Spirit. Your Word alone gives life, but we are distracted from receiving and obeying Your Word. In our thinking, speaking, and doing, we have failed to do what Your Word commands. Thank You for being a wonderful Father and a merciful Savior! Bring us again to the foot of Jesus’ cross that we may receive the forgiveness we so desperately need. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God, in His great mercy, has given His Son to die for you and, for Jesus’ sake, He forgives you all your sins. Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen. Sermon Song:

“Blessed Assurance” Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God,

Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Refrain: This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long; This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight!

Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; Angels descending bring from above

Echoes of mercy, whispers of love. (Refrain)

Perfect submission -- all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blest;

Watching and waiting, looking above, Filled with His goodness, lost in His love. (Refrain)

+ SERVICE OF THE WORD +

Reading: Habakkuk 1:1-17 and 2:1 1 The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received.

2 How long, LORD, must I

call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save?

3 Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate

wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.

4 Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked

hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted. 5 “Look at the nations and

watch—and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.

6 I am raising up the Babylonians,

that ruthless and impetuous people, who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwellings not their own.

7 They are a feared and dreaded people; they are a law

to themselves and promote their own honor. 8

Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves at dusk. Their cavalry gallops headlong; their horsemen come from afar. They fly like an eagle swooping to devour;

9 they all

come intent on violence. Their hordes[b]

advance like a desert wind and gather prisoners like sand.

10 They mock kings and scoff at rulers. They laugh at all

fortified cities; by building earthen ramps they capture them. 11

Then they sweep past like the wind and go on—guilty people, whose own strength is their god.” 12

LORD, are you not from everlasting? My God, my Holy One, you[c]

will never die. You, LORD, have appointed them to execute judgment; you, my Rock, have ordained them to punish.

13 Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot

tolerate wrongdoing. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

14 You

have made people like the fish in the sea, like the sea creatures that have no ruler.

15 The wicked foe pulls all of them up with hooks, he catches them in his

net, he gathers them up in his dragnet; and so he rejoices and is glad. 16

Therefore he sacrifices to his net and burns incense to his dragnet, for by his net he lives in luxury and enjoys the choicest food.

17 Is he to keep on emptying

his net, destroying nations without mercy?

2 I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.

After the Reading:

Pastor: This is the word of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon: “Minor League Prophets? Habakkuk-The Questioning Prophet”

Prayers: Lord’s Prayer: Pastor: Lord, remember us in your kingdom as we boldly pray: People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy

kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Song of Reflection:

“My Faith Looks Up to Thee” My faith looks up to Thee,

Thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior Divine. Now hear me while I pray; take all my guilt away;

O let me from this day Be wholly Thine!

May Thy rich grace impart, Strength to my fainting heart; My zeal inspire!

As Thou hast died for me, Oh, may my love to Thee Pure, warm, and changeless be, A living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread,

And griefs around me spread, Be Thou my guide; Bid darkness turn today, Wipe sorrow’s tears away,

Nor let me ever stray From Thee aside. The Offering:

Feel free to bring your offering to church and drop it in the mail slot under the church office window.

OR Mail it to 201 Raymond Drive, Benicia, CA 94510

Closing Song:

“Go, My Children, with My Blessing” Go, My children, with My blessing, Never alone,

Waking, sleeping, I am with you; You are My own. In My love’s baptismal river I have made you Mine forever.

Go, My children, with My blessing—You are My own.

Go, My children sins forgiven, At peace and pure. Here you learned how much I love you, What I can cure.

Here you heard My dear Son’s story; Here you touched Him, saw His glory.

Go, My children, sins forgiven, At peace and pure.

Benediction: Numbers 6:24-26 Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face

shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you and me His peace, His power, and His presence.

People: Amen.

Departing Blessing: Pastor: Go in peace to serve the Lord. People: Thanks be to God!
