Dynamic singer-songwriterreturns to Tehachapi, Nov. 3
BY DEBORAH HAND-CUTLERCONTRIBUTING WRITER
On Sunday, Nov. 3, British Isles singer-songwriter Sarah McQuaid returns to Fid-dlers Crossing, 206 E. “F” St., for a matineeperformance.
McQuaid appeared last year at the Down-town Tehachapi venue and enchanted theaudience with her lovely alto voice andwhat has been called her “sparkling guitar.”
With roots in Europe and America,McQuaid is equally at home singing Irish,Appalachian and Elizabethan ballads, andeven 1930s jazz standards.
In her own songs, McQuaid is a story-teller. Her subjects cover a range of humanhistory and emotions. She sings about Bessof Hardwick, a remarkable 16th CenturyEnglish businesswoman. She sings aboutlove, from a tender love letter from motherto daughter, to an old-fashioned ColePorter-style “first kiss” love song. In otherpieces, she moves to spiritual questioningand ponders the relationship of soul andplace.
McQuaid was born in Spain but raised inChicago by her Spanish father and Ameri-can mother. She currently lives in ruralCornwall, England, with her husband andtwo children.
Tickets may be purchased next door toFiddlers Crossing at Mountain Music,Tehachapi Treasure Trove, 116 E. TehachapiBlvd., Tehachapi Furniture in Old Towne,20346 W. Little Black Train coming to Fiddlers CrossingBY DEBORAH HAND-CUTLER
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
On Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m., LittleBlack Train will be stopping at Fid-dlers Crossing, 206 E. “F” St., for arousing performance of bluegrass,Celtic and American roots music.
The popular Central Coast trio ofKenny Blackwell on bluegrass man-dolin, John Weed on Irish fiddle, andStuart Mason on guitar, mandola andbanjo, cross traditional songs andtunes from Appalachia and theBritish Isles with Depression-eragospel and blues and their own newsongs.
Each of the three members of LittleBlack Train could give a riveting con-cert alone. Together, the band is evenmore than the sum of its highlyaccomplished parts. Blackwell is oneof California’s foremost session man-dolinists, with TV and movie scorecredits. He played in fiddler RichardGreen’s band. He is also no strangerto the Fiddlers Crossing stage, havingplayed here in 2011 with blues gui-tarist Dorian Michael.
John Weed is a classically trainedviolinist who has lived in Ireland,
immersing himself in the fiddlingstyles of Counties Clare and Donegal. He, too, has film score credits. Healso performs in a Cajun combo, andwith the Celtic group Molly’sRevenge.
Guitarist Stuart Mason doubles on
old-time clawhammer banjo andmandola. A native of West Virginia,Stuart has won awards for traditionalsinging, mandola and songwriting.Stuart is also a member of Molly’sRevenge.
Little Black Train is one of thegroups helping to define Americanroots music for today’s audiences. For reviews, videos and more infor-mation, check Littleblacktrain.comand www.fiddlerscrossing.org andfacebook.

Whether you're relocat-ing across town or acrossthe country, moving isexpensive. By the timeyou've paid to have yourhousehold goods packedand moved, cancelled andreconnected utilities andracked up storage fees, youcould easily be out thou-sands of dollars.
Many people don't real-ize that if they're moving tostart a new job, transferringwith a current employer oreven returning to the U.S.to retire after workingabroad, their movingexpenses may be taxdeductible. Plus, movingexpenses are an "above-the-line" deduction, whichmeans they reduce youradjusted gross income and
can be claimed even if youdon't itemize deductions.
Two tests generally mustbe satisfied to claim a mov-ing-expense deduction:
Distance test. The dis-tance between your newjob and your former homemust be at least 50 milesfarther than your previousworkplace is from thathome. For example, if youused to work 10 miles fromhome, your new workplacemust be at least 60 milesfrom your old home. If thisis your first job or you wereunemployed, the job mustbe at least 50 miles fromyour old home.
Time Test. Regularemployees must work full-time at least 39 weeks dur-ing the 12 months aftermoving, although the weeksneedn't be consecutive or
for the same employer. (Forself-employed people, it's78 weeks during the first 24months.)
If you moved this year, you can claim the deduc-tion on your 2013 taxeseven if you haven't yet metthe time test, provided youexpect to during the com-ing year. If you later fail tomeet the time test, youmust reverse the deduction, either by including theamount as "other income"on your 2014 tax return, orby filing an amended 2013return.
Qualified movingexpenses include:
• Costs for packing andtransporting householdgoods, personal effects, petsand vehicles.
• Fees to disconnect
and/or connect utilities.• Travel costs for you and
household members to thenew home. (Meals cannotbe charged).
• Use of your car duringthe move.
• Storing and insuringyour possessions for up to30 days.
Note: Family membersneedn't move at the sametime nor by the samemeans of transportation.
Expenses that donot qualify include:
• Expenses of buying orselling a home, includingclosing costs, mortgagefees, house-huntingexpenses, home improve-ments or new furnishings.
• Loss on the sale of yourold home.
• Charges for signing or
breaking a lease.• Fees for new car tags or
driver's license in your newlocale.
• Expenses incurred onside trips en route to yournew home (e.g., sightsee-ing).
• Security deposits(including any given up dueto the move).
• Also, you cannot take amoving expense deductionand a business expensededuction for the sameexpenses.
See IRS Publication 521for all eligible and ineligibleexpenses and other detailsabout the moving expensededuction. To file for thededuction, complete IRSForm 3903 and attach it to aForm 1040 Income TaxReturn. You don't need tocomplete a Schedule A
unless you are otherwiseitemizing deductions. (Youcannot claim movingexpenses on a 1040EZForm.)
Also note: If your employ-er reimburses you for anydeductible expenses, youmust reduce your movingdeduction by that amount;and, employer reimburse-ment for non-deductibleexpenses will likely be treat-ed as wages on your W-2Form.
Take a few minutes tocalculate whether you qual-ify for the moving expensededuction – you could savea bundle on your taxes.
