The Water Cycle

Earth and WaterThe water on Earth

today is the same water that was on Earth billions of years ago.

We are drinking the same water dinosaurs drank!

About ___ of the Earth’s surface is water.

Every day 40 trillion gallons of water is being cycled through the atmosphere.

Water Cycle ( 6 PROCESSES INVOLVED)

evaporation- the process where liquid changes into a gas (water vapor) due to heating

condensation- water vapor in the air that turns back into liquid

precipitation- water in the air that falls to the earth in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail

transpiration- vapor that comes from plants, trees, and the ground and goes into the air

infiltration- water soaks into the ground- some returns to the surface, some remains in-ground

run-off- precipitation that returns to earth into rivers, streams, and oceans

Evaporation

You need 2 things:

1.The sun

2.Water

Gas – water vapor

Evaporation Demonstration

Transpiration

Water

Gas – Water Vapor

Transpiration Activity

1. What do you notice about the side with the bag covering the leaves?

2. Where do you think the transpiration goes on the side that is not covered?

Condensation

WARMER AIR

COLDER AIR

Gas Water Vapor

LiquidWater Droplets

Condensation Activity

1. What caused the water droplets to form on the outside of the glass?

2. Where did the water droplets come from?

3. How is this similar to the water cycle?

Cloud in a Jar

1. Why did we put the ice on top of the jar?

2. What was the purpose of the match?

3. What happened to the “smoke”?

4. How does this represent what happens during the water cycle?

Run-off Activity

1. What happens to water that does not met a sloped surface?

2. Is there a difference in the water that runs-off soil, rock, etc?
