before-seenexhibitioncreatedbythemuseumallowsvisitorstodiscovertheartisticprocess
andstepbehind-the-scenestoexplorehowoneofthemostinfluentialanimatedfilmsinhistory
wasproduced:WaltDisney’s1940feature-lengthmasterpiecePinocchio.

Award-winningindependentanimator,animationhistorian,teacher,andauthor—this
immersiveexhibitioninvitesthevisitortoexperiencetheproductionprocessesofthepre-
digitalera,providingaglimpseintohowlegendaryanimatorsworkedandthought.Inaddition
toexaminingthephasesofproduction,theexhibitionrevealshowthisinnovativeclassicbuilt
onthesuccessofSnowWhiteandtheSevenDwarfs(1937)tocreateacinemamasterpieceof
unsurpassedquality.Pinocchioinspiredadvancesincharacterdevelopmentandthree-
dimensionaldesign,andtheexhibitionallowsgueststoenjoytheartcreatedbytheanimators
anddesignersofTheWaltDisneyStudiostocreatethestunningworkfeaturedinthefilm.
Withmorethan300objects—includingoriginalhand-drawnartwork,charactermodel
sheets,cels,maquettes,paintings,conceptualartwork,artifacts,flipbooks,andfilmclips—Wish
UponaStarshowcasestheintricate,labor-intensiveprocessesoftraditionalhand-made
animationasdevelopedattheStudios.ThestoryofPinocchio’screationispresentedinsix
sections:story,design,production,artdirection,characterdevelopment,andanimation.
PublishedasanillustratedserialinItaly,theoriginalstoryofPinocchiobyCarlo
Lorenzini,betterknownbyhispennameCarloCollodi,(1826–1890)presentedWaltDisney
withthechallengeofadaptingaramblingnovellaintoasuccinctstory.Inordertokeepthe
film’scharactersandnarrativeconsistent,theartistsreliedonanimprovedmethodof
storyboarding—atechniqueofpinningsketchestoacorkboardincomicstripfashion—which
becameamethodofstorytellingthatisusedthroughoutthefilmindustrytothisday.
Numeroussequentialstorysketchesaredisplayedintheexhibition.

AlsoshowcasedisamodelofahorizontalMultiplaneCamera,anothertooldeveloped
andperfectedbyTheWaltDisneyStudiosinthe1930s.Thisinnovativecamerasetupallows
variousplanesinascene—eachpaintedonseparatepanesofglass—tobefilmed
simultaneously,creatingaperceptionofdepthpreviouslyunattainableinconventional2D
animation.DuringthecreationofPinocchio,thismethodwasrefinedandusedextensivelyin
suchmemorablescenesasthe“Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee”sequencewhenPinocchioistakento
Stromboli’sCaravan.
Inadditiontothepresentationofthesetangibleinnovationsandmechanicaland
photographicvisualeffects,theexhibitionalsotakesacloserlookatthesettings,color,mood,
characterrelationships,style,andcostumesofthisremarkablefilm,whichhasdazzled
audiencesforover75years.

beingpresentedintheDianeDisneyMillerExhibitionHallfromMay18,2016throughJanuary

Fromthemid-1930stothemid-1940s,TheWaltDisneyStudioscreatedfivecinematicclassics
thatexplorednewpossibilitiesandredefinedtheartofanimation:SnowWhiteandtheSeven
Dwarfs(1937),Pinocchio(1940),Fantasia(1940),Dumbo(1941),andBambi(1942).Produced
attheendoftheDepressioninthelate-1930s,Pinocchiobrilliantlydeployedstate-of-the-art
hand-crafteddrawingsandvarioustechnicalbreakthroughs—suchastheMultiplaneCamera—
totellanepicstory.ToutedbymanyasthecrowningachievementoftheextraordinaryGolden
AgeofWaltDisney’searlystudio,thisgroundbreakingfilmpioneeredcutting-edgeanimation
andsoundtechnologiesandfirmlyestablishedablueprintforDisneyfilmmakingthatremains
