OverviewThe Wadden Sea is a sub-

section of the North Sea, covering the northern sea shore of Germany and the Netherlands.

The waters of the Wadden Sea are of the Arctic Ocean. As they flow with the tides, the beaches and flats of the area are hidden and revealed.

The Mud FlatsThe Wadden Sea gets its name from the Dutch word

‘wad’ – in English, ‘mud flat’. At low tide, the coast is full of muddy terrain with a thin layer of water overtop.

Flora and FaunaEvery nature lover owes it to themselves to experience the over five thousand species of birds, shellfish, mammals, plants, and fish that can be found in and around the Wadden Sea’s many beaches, flats, grasslands, and waters.
