EDITORIAL

Hi Folks,

Welcome to 2011, a new year and a new chance to get involved

with your local tenant group and the Beacon Partnership. If you

can spare the time to attend one meeting a month and give your

help it would be appreciated. A full list of contacts for all the

tenant groups is available from the office.

We also need some help with the delivery of the Voice, if you

could deliver in your own road or block of flats, give us a call.

This month is the start of our basic computer course, there are

details inside this edition on how to sign up, or call in at the

office and see Nicola.

During the cold spell in late November and December, good Sa-

maritan‟s were seen spreading grit from the bin at the top of Old

Hill over the pavements and lanes! Well done for your good

work! Many others were seen filling bags and buckets with grit

and heading off home. Please remember this is not a FREE sup-

ply for your paths, and it is only to be used for the public roads

and pavements.

Finally I am sure we have not seen the last of the cold weather, if

you have elderly neighbours or someone who may need a little

help over the cold spell, give us a call and let us know! If we can

all do a little, no one has to do a lot.

From all at Carrick Housing a Happy New Year to all tenants, residents

and readers of The Voice. Unfortunately due to the freezing weather we

are having at the moment and impending cuts this is said with slightly

less confidence than normal at this time of year.

Hopefully by the time you read this you will all have had a good and en-

joyable Christmas and the weather has warmed up. As I write this we are

going into the second week of bitterly cold, icy and frankly dangerous

weather; with the roads and pavements covered in ice, Old Hill is cur-

rently closed due to the ice. Hopefully this has now cleared and early

January is nice and warm: possibly slightly optimistic I know.

If this weather has continued into the New Year it may be beneficial to

ask if we can just spare a few minutes of our time to make sure those of

you with relatives, friends or neighbours who are elderly or vulnerable

that they are safe and warm.

2011 may be a tough time for all of us due to cuts being made by Corn-

wall Council and central government. What affect this is going to have

for us all, I am sure we will soon find out: hopefully there will be as little

effect on front line services and jobs within Cornwall as possible.

Whatever 2011 has in store for us let‟s all hope that by this time next year

we can say with slightly more confidence A Happy New Year!

SCV Works Programme

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s SCV Works programme is an engagement tool delivered by Fire Fighters targeting the hard to

reach groups within specific sectors that other organisations are struggling to connect with.

The SCV Works team will deliver at local Fire Stations a variety

of transformative and inspirational activities that raises self esteem and confidence, improves teamwork and communication

skills, develops trust and support and increases motivation and aspirations.

SCV Works will deliver;

A week’s course for young people identified by their school as likely to become NEET’S.

A 6 week course for NEET’s, woman and over 50’s that

are not in employment or who are on benefits. A variety of one day engagement courses for all the

above groups. These courses include participation in Fire service

activities, teamwork challenges and life skills.

All participants will be supported by the team after the course and encouraged into voluntary work or linked to other

organisations for their own development.

X-mas and New Year

In the build up to x-mas, Falmouth and Penryn Neighbourhood Teams changed a number

of shifts in order to meet the demand of the season. We used our additional numbers to provide

extra cover during late night shopping and other such events. We also provided extra cover on

New Year‟s Eve to provide a highly visible presence in the town in an effort to allow everyone to

start the New Year in a positive light. The team hopes everyone enjoyed the festive season.

Langton Road

Parking on Langton Road has unfortunately returned to its previous poor display of disre-

gard to other road users and pedestrians. Vehicles have been causing an obstruction whilst parked

on the opposite side of the road to the old bus stop. Parking here will not be tolerated and tickets

will be issued for „Unnecessary Obstruction‟ if vehicles are found violating these restrictions.

Crime Prevention Advice BURGLARY / THEFT FROM YOUR HOME

A third of burglars enter through an open door or window - remember to close and lock your win-

dows when you go out. Opportunist thieves commit the majority of burglaries. They choose prem-

ises that have no obvious signs of security or where they think they will not be seen.

Did you know?

A third of burglars enter premises through an open door or window

Properties without security measures in place are ten times more likely to be burgled than

those with simple security measures such as window locks and quality door locks.

Typical stolen items are laptops, purses, money, mobile phones, jewellery, TV‟s, iPods, elec-

trical equipment, credit cards and car keys.

Being burgled is an intrusion of your personal space – don’t let this happen to you. The average cost of a burglary is over £1,000 (Home Office stats 2003/04). How can burglars get into your home?

The majority of burglars are opportunists who gain entry into your home through an open

door or window.

Doors – keep them locked, especially the front door when you are in the back garden.

Windows – keep them closed and locked, even if you are in the house a burglar might enter your property through an unlocked window. Top tips to secure your home

Locks - fit strong locks (that comply with British Standards) to external doors and windows.

Keys - don‟t leave keys in locks especially in front and back doors where burglars can get

their hands through a letterbox or cat flap. Keep keys accessible but out of sight and in a safe

place.

Alarm - install a burglar alarm and remember to use it.

Mark & register your property - marking your property with your postcode, house number or

house name makes your property traceable and deters criminals. Register at

L L A M A Hi folks,

We had a great fun day which was reported in the last voice.

L LA M A Committee members would like to thank Trevor Beal and Pauline

Cock for the help they gave our chairman with the B M X time trial, also to

Marilyn Thomas for helping out on the stalls.

L L A M A has also been informed that the memorial play equipment which was

placed on the field in memory of the children who lost their lives in a house fire,

will be removed from the area and will be refurbished and brought back and

placed near the entrance.

Our secretary has spoken to the family and they are quite happy for this to go

ahead.

When the play equipment is returned, L L A M A would like to hold a small

rededication with the family and any residents of Lambs Lane who would like to

attend.

L L A M A Would also like to congratulate David Saunby on his election to the

Falmouth Town Council. David has become a great help to L L A M A and he is

giving us a donation to help with equipment to go on the all weather pitch, which

hopefully will be goalposts and basket ball hoop.

Falmouth Town council will be cleaning up the all weather pitch.

We are not sure when this is going to happen but weather permitting it should

happen in the Spring. They will also be removing the fencing which is in a bad

state of repair.

The hedging in front of Trecarne which is looking untidy will be removed The

council will then decide whether they will replace it by grassing it or fencing it

off.

Also as you can see there has been two grit bins placed in situ. These were pur-

chased with the INCE grant from Carrick Housing which L L A M A applied

for on the residents behalf. Hopefully we wont need them, but if we do then we are prepared.

Extra security measures

Timer switch - when on holiday, or going out for the day or night, try and create the

impression that someone is at home. Use a timer switch on a lamp or a radio.

Install outdoor lighting - such as low energy security lights that come on at dusk and

go out at dawn.

Strong doors - make sure your doors and frames are strong and in good condition. Door chain and spy hole - fit a door chain or bar and spy-hole, and use them when somebody knocks at the door.

Secure your home when you go on holiday Most burglaries happen when properties are empty. It is advisable to always make your

home appear occupied when you go on holiday, regardless of whether it is for a couple of

days or a few weeks.

Top tips to secure your property when on holiday

Ask a friend, neighbour or relative to keep an eye on your property while you are

away. Get them to collect post from the letterbox, put the dustbins out, and open and close

curtains etc.

Invest in automatic time switches for lights in certain key rooms such as your lounge,

kitchen, bedroom and upstairs landing.

If you have a driveway, ask a friend or neighbour to park on your drive whilst you are

away. Check with your local police station to see if there is a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your area.
