    Brows & Lashes

Internet searches assure me that no matter how over-plucked, over-waxed or over-groomed your eyebrows may be, there is hope still for beautiful, arched, perfectly coiffed speci-mens. The most extreme method might be an eyebrow transplant (yes really!), but there are other less drastic options!

Most of us ladies and the odd gent too need to lose a few hairs from the brow line. The easiest solution is tweezing away the stray hairs yourself, but the results are short-lived and the risk of creating the wrong shape is high. Better results can be achieved by a professional, with waxing and thread-ing methods achieving hair removal lasting around 4-6 weeks. Fair or very thin eyebrows may benefit from being tinted. Like hair dye, this changes the colour and lasts 4-6 weeks.

A popular look at the moment is HD (High Definition) Brows which focus on shape and design and promise to give you sleek, stylish brows like those enjoyed by the stars. A seven step process that includes a consul-tation followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweez-ing, trimming and finishing with a pencil or brush to fill in any gaps, is described as more than just shaping or tidying but actual eyebrow artistry!

With your brows looking beautiful brows its time to move on to the eyelashes.

There are numerous mascaras around promising volume, length and thickness, and I can vouch for some of them actually work-ing! My daughters naturally

long lashes were taken to another level following the application of a

new mascara. But what else is on offer?

Tinting is an option if your lashes are particu-larly fair, and its not just for girls. I remember the difference it made to my friends son after his lashes were darkened. Curling makes straight lashes appear longer, and creates the illusion of wider, brighter, more feminine eyes. Lash-perming, which is best carried out by a professional, can make the results can last for six weeks, which is great for holidays or if you have any big events lined up.

Finally, how about having eyelash exten-sions? This is one of the UKs fastest growing beauty treatments and involves gluing separate synthetic eyelashes to individual natural lashes to give a luscious, natural look. The amount of curl, length or thickness can vary according to your personal preference and the results last for 8-12 weeks depending on your natural lash growth cycle.

I was born with my dads eyebrows. Naturally thick, shapeless and unsightly, they looked like two caterpillars stuck to my forehead. At age twelve I followed the fashion of the day and plucked away until they were within a whisper of totally disappearing - and I was on the point of fainting! Today, my eyebrows are thin, shapeless and unsightly and Im resigned to them looking that way forever. Or rather I was

    @moneysavingexpert

Marriage Tax Are you married or in a civil partnership?

If so, is one of you a non-taxpayer, and the other paying

basic 20% tax? If youve just answered yes, then youre

one of 4.1million couples due a free 212 a year.

This is all about marriage tax allowance, a tax-break introduced in April 2015. I was stunned to find out how few people know about it and the likelihood is youre in the 80% who havent claimed it, so Im going to tell you how.

Who can get it? You must be married or civil partners. If youve lived together for 20 years and have four kids and a dog, you are not eligible. This is a bit of social engineering by the government to have a reward for marriage in the tax system. One of you must be a non-taxpayer, i.e., usually earning less than 10,600, and the other needs to pay tax at the basic 20% rate, which is currently for those who earn under 42,385. You both must be under 80 (then theres another tax break).Dont overcomplicate this. Many people ask if they count as a non-taxpayer as Im a volunteer, I only work part time, I dont work. Stop it. Are you a UK resident who doesnt pay income tax? If you are, you count simple as that.

How does it work? The non-taxpayer can transfer 1,060 of their personal allowance thats the amount you can earn tax-free to their partner.Imagine Tyrone earns 10,000 at a garage, and is a non-taxpayer. He can arrange for 1,060 of his tax-free allowance to be transferred to his wife Fizz. So thats 1,060 of earnings she wouldve paid tax on at 20% thats now tax free. As 20% of 1,060 is 212, thats your gain.

How do you claim it? Its a really simple process. The non-taxpayer should just go to www.gov.uk/marriage-al-lowance or call 0300 200 3300. Youll need your national insurance numbers and some basic ID. Let me stress again though, its the NON TAXPAYER who must sign up people

do it the other way round and then wonder why theyre rejected.

Do I get it every year? Yes, its done via a change in your tax code that remains, so its 212 a year gain every year and once youve applied its done automatically. If your circumstances change, you need to call up and tell them.

Can I backdate the claim? Yes, you can backdate for four years, but it only started on 6 April 2015 so of course you cant go back further than that.

What if either or both of us are self-employed? It doesn't matter. As long as you fulfil the eligibility criteria above, you can apply. The only difference is if the recipient partner is in self-assessment, it will reduce their self-assess-ment bill.

What if Im a non-taxpayer who doesnt have 1,060 to pass across? It still works, its just a bit more complex if the non-taxpayer is earning just under the 10,600 thresh-old. This is because you have to transfer 1,060 of your allowance to take advantage nothing more, nothing less.

So lets do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns 10,000 a year, so shes only got 600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move 1,060 to Fred, so he gains 212 on that amount. That lowers her allowance to 9,540, but she earns 10,000 so shell pay basic 20% tax on the 440 meaning she is 88 worse off. Overall, though theyre still up over 100. If you dont get the maths, dont worry, youre always col-lectively up by doing this, so if youre a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit its still worth applying.

To win tell us: In what year was Chillfest first held?Email your answer to [email protected] Weve got family tickets for CHILFEST to give away!admitting 2 adults and 2 children to Chilfest on Friday 8th July.

C hilfest is a two day boutique music festival featuring original bands from the 80s . Held in the leafy and rural setting of Tring in Hertford-shire, with a capacity of 7,000 people for each day, Chilfest provides festival goers with an intimate yet lively atmosphere. The custom-built Chilfest arena com-prises a top quality stage and sound rig, a wide variety of food and drink outlets and plenty of toilet facilities, providing all the ingredients for a great weekend of live music ... right on here our doorstep.Chilfest is the brain child of Tring resident Steve Butcher. As Managing Director of Universal Event Productions (UEP), Steve has provided event staging and rigs for a wide variety of top live events and music festivals. An 80s music lover, he had the idea of bringing live music from original bands to the local area whilst at a friends barbecue, the seed for Chilfest was sown. The 15th anniversary of UEP gave Steve the chance to re-alise his dream when he decided to stage a concert for the local community to celebrate his business achieve-ments. Originally to be a one-off event, Steve set out to create a top quality music event with all proceeds going to local charity, Rennie Grove Hospice Care.In July 2013, the Inaugural Chilfest was staged at Pendley Meadow in Tring. Featuring a lively pop night on the Fri-

day, headlined by Little Mix, and a show-stopping line up of stars from the 80s, including Tony Hadley, Rick Astley, Howard Jones, Midge Ure, Hazel OConnor and Carol Decker on the Saturday. The event sold out to its 7,000 capacity. The quality of the production, which included some of the latest moving light and LED screen technologies, re-ceived many accolades and earned nominations in two categories at the 2013 UK Festival Awards. The success of the event encouraged Steve to hold Chil-fest again in 2014 This time plans evolved to include a Sunday afternoon with a more contemporary line-up for a younger audience. Over 15,000 people attended. In 2015, Pendley Meadow was once again filled to ca-pacity when, for the third year running, Chilfest rocked Tring with two spectacular nights of top quality music. This year saw, for the first time at Chilfest, a team of tal-ented performance interpreters who took to the stage with the bands and enthusiastically signed every single song for the benefit of the deaf community. Chilfest 2016 will take place on Friday 8th and Satur-day 9th July. once again, bringing two days of the very best sounds from the 1980s. This years line up includes UB40, Heather Small, The Human League, Chas and Dave, Tony Hadley and many more..

Vauxhall Male Voice Choir choir was born in 1943 during the grim and dark days of World War II when morale was at low ebb. The factory had been turned primarily to the manufacture of tanks and military vehicles and it was by way of an outlet from this travail that a singing group was formed. They were soon entertaining the troops by radio broadcasts and enter-taining locally in charitable concerts. Our history is long and littered with interesting stories and events; we have done most of the things, and more, ex-pected of a male voice choir! Participation in competitions including winning a prize at a Welsh eisteddfod, singing with famous massed military bands in the regular pageants held at the Luton Football Ground during the 1980s, TV

appearances, including Harry Secombes Highway pro-gramme and travelling (usually each year) on away-trips to British and European towns and cities have all featured in the rich life of VMVC choris-ters past and present. The choir is currently 45-strong and sings now mainly for enjoyment and charitable causes. We are always keen to accept new members and regularly take steps by way of recruitment exercises to ensure the future of our organisation. We meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm for practice at St Mar-garets Church, Biscot Mill, Luton and newcomers will be made extremely welcome by our friendly members. Just turn up on a Wednesday or, alternatively contact Brian Matthews on 01525-841077.

    10 YEARGUARANTEE

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader PartnershipConsumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes not the frames has received the coveted Which Trusted Trader status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clears long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 10 year guarantee. But its not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps dont focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Dunstable, Luton & surrounding areas areas and manager Tom Bliss

agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. The truth is that its not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people Ive done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise. So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tom a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and hell be happy to help!

How to give your pet a tablet

PDSA Vet, Vicki Larkham-Jones, said: If your pet is prescribed tablets by your vet then its important to make sure the entire course is taken. Not completing a course of medication can mean it wont work as effec-tively, so your pet could take longer to get better. Its always best to give your vet a call if you think your pet is fully better part way through a course of medication and are unsure if they need to finish it. Some medicines can be given as liquids, but others have to be taken as tablets. Your vetwill explain how often you have to give them, whether they can be crushed at all (some pills are less effective if crushed) and if they can be given with food.

The easiest option, if the tablet can be given with food, is to hide it in your pets favourite treat, or wrap it in a piece of meat. If the tablet can be crushed then you can mix it in with a portion of their food. All the food must be eaten though, to ensure the full dosage is taken. If this doesnt work, or the tablet cant be given with food then it may be best to get someone to help you to give them the tablet. One person should help to hold your pet still; for small pets they can be placed on a surface (with no danger of falling) and stand behind the pet holding them gently but firmly. For larger dogs, they will need to sit on the floor, ideally against a wall, with someone steadying their body and head to limit movement. Have a syringe of water ready in case your pet wont swallow their tablet. The second person should gently take hold of the up-per jaw of your pet with one hand and tilt it upwards; this naturally opens the mouth slightly. Using their other hand, gently pull your pets lower jaw down by placing their fingers on the incisors and drop the tablet onto the tongue, as far back as possible.

Close the mouth and stroke your pets throat in a gentle downward motion until they swallow. Once your pet licks their lips, this is a good indication that they have swallowed the tablet. If they are struggling to swallow you can syringe a small amount of water into their mouth to encourage swallowing. Its a good idea to give your hands a wash afterwards. Giving liquid medication is a little easier, but quite similar. One person should hold your pet still while the other person administers the medication. This is usually done with a syringe (provided by your vet) and squirted into the side of your pets mouth while their head is held level. When youre finished, reward your pet with plenty of praise so that they will associate the process with get-ting something nice at the end! If you are still having problems, then ask your vet practice for more advice the medication may even be available in a different form that is easier for you to give. PDSA is on a mission to educate the nation on pet wellbeing and is delighted that funding from players of Peoples Postcode Lottery is helping the charity to continue this vital work.

    Bedfordshires Night Sky

    By Seb Jay

Last Chance to Wave at Tim Peake: On Saturday 18 June British astronaut Tim Peake leaves the International Space Station after his six-month mission. In the lead up to his departure the Space Station delivers a series of spectacular passes over Bedfordshires late evening skies. Look for a solid bright white light moving on a roughly west-to-east trajectory every night from Thursday 26 May until Wednesday 15 June. The Station is easy to spot with the naked eye as it shines brighter than the stars. Check local press or online for exact timings.

Catch Mars and Saturn in a Telescope: This summer is a great opportunity to point a telescope at Saturn and Mars. Both planets are easy to find low down towards our southern horizon during late evenings. Mars glows a distinct orange colour. Saturn is that dimmer pale yellow point of light to the left of Mars. Even a small telescope will show Saturns rings.

Discover a Giant Swan in the Summer Night Sky: A giant swan sweeps across the night sky this summer. Look high up towards your south-east for a bright cross pattern of stars. This is the constellation of Cygnus. The cross represents a swan in flight, the brightest star in the constellation, a star called Deneb, forms the swans tail. At around 7000 light years away Deneb is the most distant star that we can see with the naked eye!

    VOLVO XC90 T8

How many cars have you driven that come with an Orrefors crystal gearshift lever as standard? South of zero, Id guess, but its one of the classy little touches youll find in Volvos latest range topper, its twin engined XC90 T8. With its twin engine set up, it show-cases the future for Volvo, one of the features of which will be the distinctive Thor hammer headlights youll find here lighting the way. Its built on Volvos SPA platform (Scaleable Product Architecture) which means it will be used for future cars in the pipeline that well be seeing before too long. 2015 was Volvos best year in the UK for 21 years, thanks to the V40 and the XC60. Nearly 3,000 XC90s have been sold here so far since its relaunch last year as a truly classy top banana true seven seater SUV. The latest addition to the range is the T8 and the engines (plural) in question here are Volvos T6 petrol unit linked up with an 87hp electric motor, which on a 10amp feed found in most UK homes will charge up in three and a half hours. The T8 can be driven for up to 27 miles on electric power alone enough for most peoples daily commute so

on many journeys it will not emit any exhaust pollutants at all. It has a different mechanical setup to other XC90s. Its petrol engine drives the front wheels only, while its electric motor drives the rear wheels. This means that, depending on the road conditions and the drive mode selected, the T8 can operate in front, rear or all-wheel drive. It is said to be the safest Volvo ever

built, and offers the most comprehen-sive standard safety package in the car industry. It also features two world-first safety technologies Run-off Road Protection and Auto Brake at Junctions which are part of Volvos advanced suite of intelligent safety systems. Dominating the dash area is the 9 inch info module that comes as standard and its a brilliant piece of kit. It houses pretty well all the functions apart from starting the thing up and it removes with one swish of your finger across the black screen the need to clutter up the dash area with randomly sited buttons and switches. I love it, and my initial foray with the XC90 a while back which left me baf-fled in some areas of its use was quickly forgotten. If you can operate a tablet, this is just as easy.

Opt for the T8 Twin Engine and not only do you enjoy better performance, economy and substantially lower tax costs, also the standard kit is better too. Irrespective of the trim level chosen, all T8 Twin Engine XC90s get a powered tilt and slide panoramic sunroof, four-zone climate control with a cooled glove box, 12.3 active TFT driver information display, that Orrefors crystal glass gearlever knob, seven Drive

Mode Settings and Adjust-able Steering Force, third-row

air-conditioning, and auxiliary fuel-fired pre-conditioning heater (allows you to pre-set the cabin temperature before getting into the car). XC90 is a very spacious, as well as space-efficient, vehicle. The long wheelbase and the comparatively small engine bay a re-sult of Volvos decision to only use four-cylinder engines means cabin space is impressive. Its like a gentlemens club in there, so quiet and relaxing. Its as a business user that you really score with this, they say. Because of its low CO2 figure, it qualifies for a 100 per cent first year allowance, so the entire cost of purchase can be written off in the first year of ownership. Some cynics might say for hybrid, read tax dodge, but not me of course. Its clean, minimalist Scandinavian de-sign sets it apart from its competitors.

Inscription; 64,2051969cc four cylinder petrol engine, 320hp/400Nm, plus 87hp/240Nm electric motor Top speed 140mph, 0-62mph 5.6secs; Fuel combined figure 134.5mpg; CO2 49g/km; Will it fit the garage? 4950/2140/1776 (l/w/h).
