Background of the Vietnam War

After the end of WWII, the U.S. practiced a policy of “Containment”.

Containment was the theory that Communism must not be allowed to spread, and it was America’s job to stop it.

Background of the Vietnam War

The Vietnam War began with President John F. Kennedy sending U.S. military advisors to South Vietnam in 1961 to help train the South Vietnamese Army.

After the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in August of 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson escalated U.S. involvement in South Vietnam by sending U.S. ground forces into the country.
