The VegeTarian guide To Los angeLesAs the interest in vegetarian and vegan options continues to rise, a growing number of restaurants—from fast-food to four-star—are dishing out delicious animal-free fare.

Why are growing numbers of people leaving animals off their plates?

For better health. According to the American Dietetic Association, vegetarians are reported to have lower rates of heart disease, blood cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and body mass indices than nonvegetarians.

For the earth. Animal agriculture is considered one of the leading causes of global warming, and according to a United Nation’s report, generates nearly one-fifth (18%) of all global human-induced greenhouse gas emissions.

For the animals. Every single hour in the U.S., more than one million animals are killed for us to eat. With virtually no laws to protect them, birds, pigs, and cows on factory farms are routinely treated in ways that would result in legal prosecution if those same abuses were inflicted upon cats and dogs with whom we share our homes. We can help animals at every meal simply by choosing the vegan versions of our favorite foods.

Whatever the reason you’re exploring meat-free eating, we hope you’ll find our Guide useful and your dining experiences delightful. It’s never been easier to savor vegan cuisine in the City of Angels!

Sincerely,

Jaya Bhumitra, Los Angeles Outreach DirectorCompassion Over Killing

When Compassion Over Killing investigators found her at an egg factory farm, one of her wings was pinned in the wires of her cage. Painfully thin and dehydrated, she had struggled so violently to free herself that her wing dislocated and her tendons ripped. We rescued Jane, and after having her wing amputated, she now enjoys her freedoms at a sanctuary where she basks in the sun, scratches the earth, and eats her favorite snack—green grapes.

Jimmy was born with rhinitis, a disease which deforms pig’s snouts. On modern day factory farms, tens of thousands of pigs are crammed into large buildings, without adequate ventilation. Respiratory illnesses are common, and thousands of sickly piglets die every year before even reaching “slaughter weight” when they are just six months old. Typically, sick and deformed pigs are killed by the farmers, but Jimmy managed to escape this cruel fate and found his way to Farm Sanctuary’s L.A.-area Animal Acres. Jimmy da Snout charms all the sanctuary visitors with his gentle and friendly personality, and loves to receive belly rubs and bananas! Visit Jimmy today – go to Farmsanctuary.org for details.

Shortly before Thanksgiving, Brando and 24 other baby turkeys were left on the doorstep of Farm Sanctuary’s L.A.-area Animal Acres. They were dirty, weak, debeaked, and some also had the tips of their toes cut off, an indication that they came from a factory farm. Debeaking is a standard industry practice in which the tip of the bird’s sensitive, nerve-filled beak is removed with either a hot blade or by microwave; both procedures are performed on the baby birds without anesthetic. While Brando had a rough start, with the gentle care and love of the shelter staff he improved daily and is now enjoying life at the sanctuary. Visit Brando today – go to Farmsanctuary.org for details.

Check out tryVeg.com for more information about the turkey industry and how you can make a difference for animals.

Eating is for the birds. Meet Brando.

William and Harry were inside a truck with nearly 100 other calves headed to be sold for veal or cheap beef, but their fortunes drastically changed. Sickly and weak like many dairy industry calves, the two were emaciated, hypothermic, and suffering from diarrhea so severe that they were seriously dehydrated. Their bones bulged beneath their flesh. Harry was so terrified of humans that he began shivering whenever anyone came near. Now at Farm Sanctuary’s L.A.-area Animal Acres, these two young

calves are healing and growing by leaps and bounds. With the help of the shelter staff, they are also learning to trust and experiencing something almost no dairy calf ever does: peace. Visit William and Harry today – go to FarmSanctuary.org for details.

Check out tryVeg.com for more information about the dairy and veal industries, and how you can make a difference for animals.

Moo-ve over dairy and beef. Meet William and Harry.
