Wow. What a fabulous year for SCV and what a spectacular way to celebrate our 35th Anniversary! [It was a special treat to
meet and greet alumni who marched with my children – Romie Evans]
To all the members of the Vanguard and Vanguard Cadets, and especially the Alumni Corps, our most heartfelt
congratulations for your outstanding performances at DCI Finals in Madison. Your presence on the field and display of "Santa
Clara" style to all those in attendance will be remembered for years to come. All three corps exhibited a tremendous amount of
pride, dignity, respect, and true sportsmanship both on and off the field. We thank each and every one of you for all the hard
work, dedication, commitment and sacrifice you made to the Santa Clara Vanguard Organization this year. For a drum and
bugle corps to have three performing units at DCI Championships, was truly a "once in a lifetime" experience.
To Rick Valenzuela, congratulations for receiving the Director of the Year award!
To George Brown, our deepest appreciation for everything you do for the
Vanguard Cadets and our organization.
To all the parents, who helped throughout the season and especially to Mike
Freitas, who undertook the job of chief “cook and bottle washer” for the Vanguard
Cadets, a very heartfelt thanks to you all.
To all the volunteers, we recognize and thank you for your hard work in support
of our youngsters and the demands of the season and tour.
A special recognition to our office staff, instructional staff, support staff and
drivers, YOU are the ones who make this happen. Thank you and our sincere
appreciation for everything you do.

Well Hello SCV Family!
We are home safe and sound and still have many memories
dancing in our heads. The tour was long and often hot but all
the good words and wishes from the fans made the trip
worthwhile.
The highlight of the season was of course the great Finals
performances by both the Vanguard and Vanguard Cadets, as
well as our great Alumni Corps. The highlight for Souvies was
winning Best Souvie Booth. We were awarded a Gold Medal
and $100.00 from Dan Acheson and DCI...Thanks to Bob
Amaya for helping with the decorations. If you were not at Finals,
you missed Surfin' with SCV.
Our next selling venue will be at the
banquets for both corps. If you did not get your
favorite t-shirt or trinket, this may be your last opportunity to
do so. Also check out the website – we’ve updated it and added
the 2002 merchandise so you can buy online. Thanks to all for
stopping by to just say hello or do your summer shopping. You
are great SCV!!!!
Happy Trails,

General Manager’sReport
Looking back at all of the intensity and anxiety surrounding
our 35th anniversary season and the logistics of moving three
corps around the country (hoping everything would work without
problem), it is all now just a bittersweet memory. Knowing that
the season is finally over, the reality has set in.
Bus 3 is finally on its way home from Odessa, TX. We are
experiencing another new challenge as transporting a 40’ bus
on a flatbed trailer has many obstacles, some previously
unknown to us. We did find a new friend and driver in Jim Cooley
from Whirlwind Tours. Jim quickly became part of our driving
team and a member of the Vanguard family. Next time you see
Jim, ask him about his midnight call to me while he was on
tour...
Thanks also go out to Mike Brassfield who left the Vanguard
tour and flew home to drive SCV 6 for the Cadets. When Mike
left Santa Clara, we were experiencing a problem with the
running lights, so he could only drive during the daylight hours.
After finding a shop in the Midwest that finally solved the
problem, he was able to finish the tour without any more
problems, except the long drive home.
And how about Harry Morrow who drove the Cadet’s food
truck to the Midwest, throughout the tour and then home again,
by himself. Harry joined up the fleet for a while in Wyoming,
but then continued on his own. Except for an overheating
problem in Nevada, we believe the trip was uneventful.
Bruce lost his wallet in San Antonio with his
driver’s license in it. After it was resolved that he
could continue driving without it, he finished tour
without issue…until it came time to board the plane home. No
picture ID, no getting on an airplane. Bruce spent a good part
of his days off in Santa Clara, making arrangements so he
could get home.
Tim Anglim retired from Gallo in Modesto on Friday, July
5th. On Saturday July 6th he had his bags packed and joined
us for the remainder of tour. As he’d always wanted to do an
entire tour, the first chance he got, he took it.
Can’t forget Linda “Betty”, who broke her arm in a fall at
Camp Randall. It’s healing nicely and she is in physical therapy,
so she’ll be ready for audition camp in November.
Thanks to Brian Marsalli for fixing all those little annoying
problems that a 20-year-old fleet presents to us on a continuing
basis (even though you crawled into bed the night that SCV 3
went down).
Megan and John, the curtains are coming home. Oh, and
if someone ever finds the passenger side window of SCV 15
while driving though Nebraska, pick it up and bring it home.
To all the drivers this past summer thanks for keeping our
members and staff safe. Without your constant diligence in
keeping the safety of our kids first, we couldn’t do what we do.
For all the sleepless nights and lost days, for all the shows you
missed so you could sleep, those long night trips, sometimes
past the same scenery you saw just a few days before, THANK
YOU!
And thanks to the Wyoming Department of Transportation
for always having construction projects along I-80 and those
big orange barrels. One of these trips they will all be gone …

National Tour Mail Stops
Welcome to the Vanguard report. The summer has come
and gone! It’s amazing how time flies these days. Everyone is
so busy with their life responsibilities, we sometimes forget to
stop and watch the Corps.
Well, I hope you were able to see the 2002 edition of SCV
and the Vanguard Cadets. If you were lucky, you also saw the
2002 SCV Alumni Corps – either at Pacific Procession or at
Championships in Madison. It was simply awesome to see
THREE performing groups from the Santa Clara Vanguard
organization on the field during the week in Madison.
The SCV Cadets once again showed why they are the best
training ground to be in the Vanguard. Their performances all
week were outstanding! The Vanguard (A-Corps) was honored
to be in the stands to watch the Cadets’ finals performance
that was exciting, emotional and very entertaining! Way to go
Cadets!
The Alumni Corps should also be congratulated on a
spectacular performance in Madison. They took the field very
early in the evening on Saturday. The stands have never been
so crowded at that time of the night, as people are usually
making their way in. No one wanted to miss the performance
from the Alumni Corps. The Alumni definitely didn’t disappoint,
showing why the Santa Clara Vanguard has been one of the
most successful drum corps these past 35 years!
The Vanguard took the field Saturday night and put on their
best performance of the season. Each night during the
championship week, the corps was able to outdo their previous
performance. That was great to see. Saturday’s night
performance was the talk of the crowd as well as other corps’
-- a great way to end the 2002 summer!
Congratulations to all of the Individual and Ensemble
performers who found time during the summer to rehearse their
performances for I&E -- they were all well received! A special
congrats to I&E winners: Pit ensemble, Cymbal ensemble, Flint
Weed on Euphonium, and Mitsuo Nakamura on French Horn.
The 2002 summer had the corps traveling nearly every
night during the heat of the summer. The members handled
the travel very well. The support staff and drivers did an
awesome job making sure we got to our destinations safely,
and keeping them fed and energized. Thank you to the
instructional staff and support staff for your outstanding efforts
and hard work!
For our 2002 age-outs: I hope you stay involved with the
organization – become an active member of the Alumni
Association and help shape the future of SCV.
For the rest of you, it’s time to start getting ready for the
upcoming season! The Corps is already hard at work preparing
for a very successful 2003 -- you’ll want to be a part of it! Don’t
forget, you’ll need to make sure you finish your financial and
bingo requirements before auditions.
Auditions will be held during the Thanksgiving weekend
(November 29th – December 1st) at Mission College in Santa
Clara, CA. Stay tuned for further details as the time comes
closer. Make sure I have your correct email address so you
can get the info first! Also keep and eye on our website at

Wow, another great drum corps season of wonderful and
exciting moments has come to a close. I am very proud of
everyone who was a part of the Vanguard Cadets season. I
am especially proud of the drive and desire of the corps
members and instructional staff who continuously developed
and refined this year’s show. It was also very impressive that
the corps members, parents and boosters worked together to
meet our financial milestones, along with fulfilling corps member
bingo obligations. Congratulations and thanks to everyone!
The Vanguard organization made another historical mark
in the Drum Corps International history books during
Championships Week in Madison, WI. With the Vanguard,
Vanguard Cadets and Vanguard Alumni Corps performing
during the DCI Championships week, SCV became the only
DCI finalist corps ever to have members from every year of
participation represented in Division I, II/III and Senior exhibition
group. I was very proud of the moments created by SCV
throughout the week. It was a shining example of what our
organization has provided for 35 years, an educational and
supportive environment for our youth, represented with the past
– Vanguard Alumni Corps and the future – Vanguard Cadets
and the Vanguard.
There were a lot of great moments and memories that were
shared throughout the summer season and I would like to share
some of them with you:
Local shows and our local fans cheering us
on; SJ City – new Astroturf (just like grass but
nice ’n’ soft); 150th City of Santa Clara July 4th standstill
performance by both corps and the fireworks that were right
above us at the end; PP-home show/home crowd – what a
large and exciting crowd; So. Cal #1, there and back in a
weekend; So. Cal #2 - there and back in a weekend; bye, bye
Trailer and Food Truck; there is our first DCI housing school,
see CADETS, page 11
with all vehicles there, but no showers at site-left after the corn
fields; our first show and we made the finals; the long bus ride
to Pennsylvania; a school with showers, yeah!; Rain, rain,
rain…; no-Aussies-in-the-rain show,-we had the highest score;
dinner with Capital Regiment -- thanks! Staff basics; No A/C in
the gym at Sun Prairie, WI; we have use of the kitchen in Sun
Prairie, WI and it has a walk-in freezer/fridge!; Pork chops,
yum; each section performing for each other – so that’s what
they do on the field when I’m…; Steak, yum; “If you Believe”;
the Vanguard cheering us on at Division II/III finals; Wow, a
whole lot of emotion and energy -- the best show performance
at the last show of the season; the tunnel circle -- the tears of
joy; the Division II/III corps member picnic - we won the bus
pushing contest with a record setting time; sharing a lunch
with the Alumni Corps; cheering on the Alumni Corps and the
Vanguard Division I Finals; being part of the Vanguard's final
playing of “Send in the Clowns” for the season at their housing
school; combined snack with all of SCV after Division I finals;
many good-byes for many friends.
This year’s success could not have been possible without
many parents, family, friends, alumni and boosters support.
We can all share in the success as everyone who pitched in to
sew, cook, clean, pack, volunteer for bingo, manage bingos,
run the booster office, paint, drive, etc. to help create an

"Children's Adventures in Movement" UpdateCarol Abohatab, Vanguard Dance Company
The summer program for Children’s Adventures in
Movement was a one-week workshop entitled ‘Peter & the
Wolf.’ For five consecutive days, three age groups met
separately to explore the classical soundtrack through non-
literal, interpretive movement.
We created a stage in the horn/guard room with two foam
core ‘wings’ so that the students could experience how to enter
and exit the performance space as real dancers do. On Friday,
the three groups were combined into one performance piece,
which lasted about 8 minutes. It was quite exciting.
All 25 performers did a fantastic job, and thirty-five people
showed up to watch! Stay tuned to the website for a video clip
of the performance. We are currently in our first full Fall 10-
week session, with new Ballet/Tap and Hip-Hop/Jazz classes,
as well as the creative dance classes that are normally offered.
It’s not too late to sign up for, or help out with the Winter
10-week session, which begins on January 18th and goes
through March 22nd. Please see the website for details or call
Carol at (408) 727-5534 ext 18.
Pacific Procession Wrap-UpJohn Flores, PP Chairman
The “Weekend Of Champions” Pacific Procession was a
HUGE success! Truly, an event to remember. For the first time,
the Blue Devils, SCV and DCI jointly produced the two shows
on July 6th and 7th. The collaborative proved to be a great
success, both financially and attendance wise. I’m extremely
proud of the cooperation demonstrated by BD and SCV to form
this union and to our Board for supporting the decision to create
the alliance. The result was two very high quality programs
that were enjoyed by the fans. A very special thanks to Dan
Acheson, DCI Chairman, and Kristy Holst, Ticket Manager
whose help and support during the various stages of production
proved to be a great help. The Pacific Procession “Weekend
Of Champions” lived up to it’s billing with fourteen very exciting
corps including DCI Champions representing the West and
Midwest: Blue Devils, Vanguard, Vanguard Cadets, Mandarins,
and Madison Scouts. Pacific Procession concluded with a very
special performance by the 35th Anniversary Alumni Corps,
including standing ovations throughout their performance. Even
the weather cooperated with sunset over the bay for all to see.
Pacific Procession was planned months in advance to
accommodate all the corps’s needs including the souvenir
booths that included first-time participation by the Mandarins,
Seattle Cascades and San Jose Music Theatre. The site was
complete with tents for vendors and support operations and
looked more like a regional show. There was great food too
including Gilroy HS Steak Sandwiches with lots of garlic!
Another great treat was provided by Peet’s Coffee, who
provided free coffee and tea for everyone. A big thanks goes
out to Cristi French (Alumni) for coordinating the Peet’s booth.

The Alumni Association would like to
congratulate our Santa Clara Vanguard and
Vanguard Cadets for the accomplishments of a very
competitive season, and to SCV Director Rick
Valenzuela for the receiving the DCI “Director of
the Year” award.
The 2002 season was enjoyed by those who
were fortunate enough to have been able to participate. We
are grateful to everyone who made this year’s 35th Anniversary
Alumni Corps possible. The list is short but recognition must
go to these individuals who helped make it possible: Thank
you Scott Pierson, Rick South, Kathy Pearson, Sheri Aguilina,
Lisa Avila, Charlie Iwanaga, Ralph Hardimon, Tom Tolbert, Tom
Johnson, Dan Vannatta and the SCVAA steering committee.
Our memories of this season will be
legendary. The SCV Alumni Corps performances
at Pacific Procession and DCI Nationals in Madison this past
August will forever be in our hearts. While in Madison, the
Alumni Corps had the opportunity to perform for DCI’s 30th
Anniversary party at the Alliant Energy Center. The room was
enormous and so was the sound. When the SCVAC opened
the DCI Finals, the crowd was enchanted and in total
concentration while the horn and drum lines worked their magic.
Then the colorguard brought down the house. The SCVAC
colorguard defined the dedication and commitment of
Vanguard. For an encore, the Alumni Corps played “Send In
The Clowns”. The crowd of 25,000 fell silent. At the conclusion,
the cheers and applause were loud and genuine. When the
corps assembled off the field, there was a rush of emotion. It
was a moment in life that no one there will forget.
Upcoming events include the annual “Day at the Races”
on Sunday, October 27 which will be followed by the SCVAA
Steering committee election on Monday evening, October 28th,
at the Round Table Pizza parlor near the University of Santa
Clara, on The Alameda in Santa Clara. We will be electing 3
new steering committee members and encourage all alumni
to come out, enjoy some food and drink and elect the 2003
SCVAA Steering Committee.
The future of the Vanguard looks bright. The Alumni
Association is proud to be part of the Booster Club and welcome
the newest members of the SCVAA. As is tradition, the
membership fee is waived for the members of the 2002
Vanguard for SCVAA 2003. The Alumni Association meets the
last Monday of every month. Call the hot line for monthly
updates on what’s happening. The Alumni Corps performing in exhibition at the Drum Corps

California State Open Wrap-UpOn June 29th the Santa Clara Vanguard hosted the 2002
California State Open Division II and III Drum Corps
Competition at San Jose City College. The show started with
the presentation of colors and playing of the National Anthem
by the SCV Cadet Corps color guard and horn line, respectively.
The Blue Devil “C” Corps was the hit of the night providing
the only Division III exhibition performance.
Division II competitiors included the Mandarins from
Sacramento, Impulse from Costa Mesa, Blue Devil “B” from
Concord and our own Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets. Senior
corps competitors included the San Francisco Renegades and
the River City Regiment from Sacramento.
First-time show chair, Harry Morrow stated "I learned a lot
about what it takes to put on a drum corps show and recognize
that it would not have been possible without the many volunteers who donated their valuable time and experience to make this
show a success. Special thanks to JW Koester, the DCI Show Coordinator, George Brown, Vanguard Cadets Director, and John
and Gloria Flores for their invaluable advice."
It took a lot of planning and work to guarantee
Drum Corps fans a memorable night. The VIP reception was
sold out far in advance of the Pacific Procession night and
gave us the opportunity to coordinate a special evening for
everyone who was lucky enough to have a Gold ticket. The
catered food was excellent! Mary and Lee Mountz, Christine
and Brian Bourg and their entire committee outdid themselves.
The patriotic-themed decorations fit the weekend and exciting
entertainment provided by GB-5, added just the right flavor to
the reception. The VIP Gold plans are always a special surprise
thanks to Gloria’s expertise.
The Pacific Procession production was made possible by
the work of a great number of volunteers. Special thanks go
out to Linda Garbarino who secured corps housing and Josh

— we did it again! Thank You!

environment so that the corps members
could focus on their show development and performance. It is
through the collective work of the corps members and
supporters that the competitive season was a success. Thank
you to everyone!
As you can imagine with all of the fun and travel during the
season, there are a lot of expenses that must be paid. Our
main source of funding to pay these expenses is bingo. We
need anyone and everyone who is older than 18 to come work
a bingo to help pay for the expenses. If you are done with your
bingo commitment, please start working your bingo commitment
for next season now. To schedule to volunteer for bingo, please
call 1-888-640-1086 or email [email protected]
I would like to congratulate the Vanguard staff and corps
members on a great season. Their performances during
championships week were wonderful. A special and personal
congratulations goes to Rick Valenzuela for being the Division
I Director of the Year. Wow! I am so happy for him and his
accomplishments. He is very deserving of this honor and
recognition!
I would like to make a very special thank you to the booster
club and alumni association for their continuous support
throughout the year. Thank you to the Pearl Drum Corporation,
Remo, Vic Firth, Innovative Percussion, Fred J Miller Inc, the
City of Santa Clara, the Wade Scholarship Fund and Brasswind/
Woodwind for their generous support and sponsorship. Also,
thank you to Mission College in Santa Clara for their educational
support of the Santa Clara Vanguard organization.
