The Eagle Has Landed

Starting this issue, we have a new feature in The Vanguardian.Every time you see the eagle icon at the end of an article or feature, this signifies that there is more information available on our website.

Where did the eagle come from? Well, as many of you know, the SCV fleet of busses are all Eagles. The eagle icon was createdfrom the emblem on the front of the busses.

So the next time you see the eagle, fly on over to our websitefor more information!

Brian Marsalli, Webmaster

Vanguard is the one to explore new territory indrum corps by ending our show on a single soft, diminishing noteplayed out by our very talented pit.

Perhaps the most touching part of the tour came at the age-out ceremony where the kids warmly embraced Rick for a greatmarching season. The corps saluted Rick by playing a specialperformance of Clowns. Thanks to the great A Corps staff and thewonderful corps members and the parents that traveled with theCadets and the A Corps this year. They were the hardest working, most supportive group we’ve seen in years. We salute theVanguard for their highly successful 2000 season.

Hello SCV family,We’re back safe and sound from tour and quite tired, I might

add. The Souvies seemed to be well-received by everyone thisyear. The new percussion CD was a real big hit and so were theSCV bears. For those of you who did not get a Bear, we still havea few left so be sure to get yours at either the A Corps or Cadetsbanquets.

Finals week was extremely busy but really fun. The MadisonScouts played a trick on us at the breakfast table one morning bygiving us the recaps from ’99, leaving us scratching our heads asto why we didn’t place higher. Of course the war was on so wehired one of the Blue Devils’ crew to Silly String them and catch iton video. Good fun with great people.

Thanks to all of you who helped with souvies this year. A big“congrats” to the Cadet Corps on their victory. Let us not forgetthe A Corps and that beautiful show you gave us. You made ourjobs so much easier.

See ya at The Banquets .-The Souvie crew

A CorpsManager’s Report

And there it another season is over. As quick as it started, itwas over! Congratulations to the A Corps members, staff, andsupport staff for an awesome and successful summer! If youhaven’t seen the broadcast of Saturday night’s performance yet,you should. The performance was spectacular and the best ofthe year. We couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Also, a special congrats goes out to DCI’s Division II Champi-ons - our very own Vanguard Cadets! The A Corps was so proudwatching you perform. I would also like to congratulate the 2000DCI Champions - The Cadets and the Cavaliers.

For those who weren’t in DC for Nationals - you missed someexciting and great performances by our individual and ensembleson Wednesday, August 9. All of them were great! A specialcongrats goes out to Jeff Hassler (contra) and our Mixed Ensemblewho took first place honors at the Individual & Ensembles compe-tition this year. The mixed ensemble included a cast of dancersas they performed to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.

(For the complete list of placements from I&E, go to http://www.scorpsboard.com/).

After Friday nights’ Semi-Finals show, our very own John-David Cisneros (soprano) was awarded the Jim Ott Scholarshipaward. A very proud moment for his mom, Mary Minjares, as wellas for me and the rest of the SCV organization. JD was chosenfrom a large number of entrants from all of the drum corps. Wayto go JD!

A very special and large thank you goes out toour Support staff. Without you we wouldn’t havetraveled as safely as we did, eaten as well as wedid, and looked as good as we did. The members, instructionalstaff, and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Instructional staff - besides teaching and cleaning the show, you also took care of the Corps. The amount of time you devotedto SCV is outstanding, the quality of instruction was even moreoutstanding. Design staff - you once again showed why we arecalled the Vanguard. The 2000 show you created was definitelyin the forefront of the activity. So thank you to the entire staff.

The 2000 show would have been nothing if it weren’t for you,the members. You brought the show to life and created some ofthe most beautiful, inspiring and thought provoking moments indrum corps history. You will forever be one of the Corps that weall talk about and watch over and over again. Where you started, and what you learned through the year is amazing.

Your ability to cope with such a difficult tour was amazing. Noother Corps was on the road as long as we were, nor did anyother Corps travel the amount of miles we did. I’m so proud to bea part of what you created.

My final piece of advice for those of you aging out this year:Take what you have learned from SCV, and apply it in your future.Stay involved with SCV.

Join the Alumni Association and the Booster Club to help shapethe future of SCV from there, like you did when you were a march-ing member.

The staff and I are already eagerly working on the 2001 sea-son. I hope you’re able and willing to return and continue yourmembership with SCV (remember to finish fulfilling your member-ship responsibilities). I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Thanks,Rick Valenzuela

WOW......What a Show .....Sixteen Corps...What a Year forPP!!

Looking at the attendance figures, it looks like over 6,500people attended our event. It was truly a very special night.

Congratulations to Santa Clara Vanguard for taking the FirstPlace for the second year in a row and also to all of the participatingcorps. You are all winners.

It was certainly great having DCI Director, Dan Acheson attendour show and present the awards. I know he enjoyed out eventand especially our weather. The last time Dan attended our showwas in Hayward when we all froze.

We’d like to thank the many fans who e-mailed us and sentus cards of thanks. Your input means so much to us.

As in any year, every show has a glitch or two and this yearwas no exception. The number of corps in our show and thenumber of traveling corps resulted in a more costly and longerproduction. As a result, there was not enough time for the VictoryConcert that many fans were anticipating. We are continuing toaddress this matter with the facility staff and hope that even with alonger program, there will be time for an encore performance.

I would like to thank our great Volunteers .....George and LindaGarbarino (Program Editors and Linda for Housing), Dan Vannatta& Ray Pulver (Corps-Stadium Liaisons), Mike Kovelich (Judges’Runners), Jerry Marsalli (Radio communications & TicketAccounting), Romie Evans (Ticket Accounting), Mary Mountz &
