HmongStory 40An Incredible Human Story

The San Joaquin Valley has a rich cul-tural blend of people who have em-igrated from all over the world that

has been the source of creating a beautifully interwoven and diverse community. Many would agree that it is because of these diver-sities that the Central Valley has a unique identity within the entire state of California. HmongStory 40 is an exhibit dedicated to celebrating the history of Hmong culture finding a home in the United States.

The year 2015 will mark 40 years of the Hmong migration from Laos and Thailand to the United States of America. To commemorate this special anniversary, an exhibition comprising of photographs, stories, fine art, and artifacts will be orga-nized to showcase the Hmong experience.

Hmongstory 40 is a joint effort from many people from throughout the state of California. It represents a collab-orative that shares a common vision. This exhibition will provide a rare and intimate opportunity to connect with the Hmong people. From the past to the present, Hmongstory 40 will construct a different narrative that is still absent within the Hmong community and the general public at large.

Traditionally, the Hmong are widely known for their customs, traditions, and tapestry arts. There are numerous books, articles, and stories that have been written about the Hmong people. However, there has never been a complete exhibition organized to illustrate a richer perspective of looking into the Hmong experience.

The exhibits will cover a range of

different topics. To start, the opening will focus on beginning the story of the Hmong settlement into the Indo-china region short-ly following the years after they left China and headed south. This is to show that there was a very structured system of governance among the Hmong people of the area. Other exhibits to expect will be: Laos & the Secret War, a civil war diving the country of Laos; Thailand Refugee Camps, discussing the brief history, tragedies & hardships of life in each camp; California, the immigra-tion and evolution of the Hmong people over the last 30 yrs. These are just to name a few of what will be seen and heard while attending the exhibit. Forty years of mem-ories will span over 4 phases, each telling a specific part of the larger story, inside the Agricultural Building at the Fresno Fair Grounds… and it’s free to attend.

HmongStory 40’s hope is to edu-cate the general public about the Hmong, as well as the events that led to the changes in their history. It’s also meant to help bridge and connect a new generation of Hmong Americans to the trauma and experiences of refugees’ settlement endured by their families. It is a celebration of culture, and an acknowledgement of the triumph over trag-edies and hardships, that is being brought out in a never before seen display of history on a large scale.

To learn more about HmongStory 40, the works on display or the incredible team behind the entire event, you can visit their website at www.HmongStory40.org or find them on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/HmongStory40.

The event will be held at the Fresno Fairgrounds inside the Agricultural Building from now until January 2nd. Admission is free and open to the public. 1121 S. Chance Ave Fresno, 93702

Oils of the BibleMore than just frankincense and myrrh

Most of us have heard that baby Jesus was given frankincense, myrrh, and gold at his birth.

Religions teach a variety of things regarding the significance of these three items from a spiritual perspective. Today I’d like to explore the two oils from a medicinal perspective. In addition to frankincense and myrrh, let’s also look at the therapeutic value of the other oils mentioned in the Bible.  Frankincense was considered a holy anointing oil in the Middle East for many generations. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records. In ancient times, the Egyptians used frankincense for prescriptions as well as recipes. Some sources recorded that the ancients used this precious oil to treat “every conceivable ill known to man.” With that sort of history, how can you not want to know more about this oil?  Studies have shown frankincense to combat tumor growth, stimulate the immune system, as well as increase oxygen to the blood, and therefore, to the brain as well. This can improve mental clarity as well as meditation. Frankincense has also been studied to be an anti-depressant as well as a muscle relaxant.  Most scholars believe that when the Bible refers to incense as a general term, it is really talking about frankincense.  Myrrh has a similar history with the ancients. It is also mentioned in the oldest known medical records and was also used by the Egyptians for prescriptions and cooking. In Arabia, it

was used to treat skin conditions as well as being added to beauty products to improve the skin.  Some of the medicinal properties of myrrh include: anti-oxidant, anti-tumoral, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-parasitic, and anesthetic properties. All of these would have been just as helpful in ancient days as they are for us today.  Other oils mentioned by name in the Bible include cedarwood, cinnamon (sometimes called cassia), cypress, fir, galbanum, hyssop, myrtle, rose (or rose of Sharon), sandalwood (sometimes called aloes), and spikenard.  The health benefits addressed by these oils include: anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-coagulant, anti-tumoral, anti-parasitic, immune stimulant, lymphatic stimulant, pain relief, stomach protectant, healing skin, circulatory stimulant, and anti-diabetic. For more information regarding which oils address specific health issues, please call me.  Oils did more than just heal your body in Biblical times. There is also mention of their use in meditation and improving memory and mental clarity. Some Biblical oils are also used to combat depression.  Given the endorsement from God’s Word, paired with reams of scientific research, therapeutic-grade essential oils are my “go to” solution for physical health and mental health issues. I hope that someone leaves you the gift of therapeutic-grade essential oils in your Christmas stocking this year. Start the new year with a commitment to health and wellness. And have a blessed and joy-filled Christmas. For more information regarding any questions about essential oils and all natural remedies for your health, call me 559-400-1352 or you can visit my website at www.PermissionCST.com.

Answers on page 18.

Fun Facts1. Christmas has its roots in pagan festivals such as Satur-nalia (December 17-December 23), the Kalends ( January 1 -5, the precursor to the Twelve Days of Christmas), and Deus Sol Invictus or Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun (December 25). The Christian church heartily disapproved of such celebrations and co-opted the pagans by declaring December 25 as Christ’s day of birth, though there is no evidence Christ was born on that day.

2. The earliest known Christmas tree decorations were apples. At Christmastime, medieval actors would use apples to decorate paradise trees (usually fir trees) during “Paradise Plays,” which were plays depicting Adam and Eve’s creation and fall.

3. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), there are 2,106 million children under age 18 in the world. If there are on average 2.5 children per

household, Santa would have to make 842 million stops on Christmas Eve, traveling 221 million miles. To reach all 842 million stops, Santa would need to travel between houses in 2/10,000 second, which means he would need to accelerate 12.19 million miles (20.5 billion meters) per second on each stop. The force of this acceleration would reduce Santa to “chunky salsa.”

4. In Germany, Heiligabend, or Christmas Eve, is said to be a magical time when the pure in heart can hear animals talking.

5.The first person to decorate a Christmas tree was report-edly the Protestant reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546). According to legend, he was so moved by the beauty of the stars shining between the branches of a fir tree, he brought home an evergreen tree and decorated it with candles to share the image with his children.

6. President Teddy Roosevelt, an environmentalist, banned Christmas trees from the White House in 1901.

7. Early illustrations of St. Nicholas depict him as stern, commanding, and holding a birch rod. He was more a symbol of discipline and punishment than the jolly, over-weight elf children know today.

8. The poinsettia is native to Mexico and was cultivated by the Aztecs, who called the plant Cuetlaxochitl (“flower which wilts”). For the Aztecs, the plant’s brilliant red color symbolized purity, and they often used it medicinally to reduce fever. Contrary to popular belief, the poinsettia is not poisonous, but holly berries are.

9. A Yule log is an enormous log that is typically burned during the Twelve Days of Christmas (December 25-Jan-uary 6). Some scholars suggest that the word yulemeans “revolution” or “wheel,” which symbolizes the cyclical return of the sun. A burning log or its charred remains is said to offer health, fertility, and luck as well as the ability to ward off evil spirits.

Sometimes we must take a critical look at where we are and where we are going. If we are unable to observe the whole of a society

as a body which functions to higher and lower degrees, how could we ever know when it was time to make quantum leaps? This is a critical analysis in areas that need severe amounts of development, attention, and nourishment. A true change of heart is necessary to invoke nutrients for our future generations. Let’s call attention and begin to lay the ground works for a better future.

1. The Support of WomenWomen have been giving birth since humans have been around. The fact that women in America only get two months of paid leave is an immense amount of evidence that the human race is men-tally underdeveloped and uninvolved still today if the places in the modern world still don’t provide enough resources for women to be able to create the next generation. Women must be able to support and nurture their children, including the support of fathers’ family structures, and support for the family within the system.http://www.npr.org/sections/itsallpolitics/2015/07/15/422957640/lots-of-other-countries-mandate-paid-leave-why-not-the-ushttp://national.deseretnews.com/article/4450/US-one-of-only-two-nations-without-guaranteed-paid-maternity-leave.htmlhttp://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2014/dec/03/-sp-america-only-devel-oped-country-paid-maternity-leave

2. The Support of ChildrenThe imagination of a child if well developed and nurtured creates minds like the great Cornel West. The great minds of society have existed because they were allowed to dream and explore and create new discoveries in their world early on in their young lives. If you destroy the child’s mind you deeply stunt the growth of an entire society’s dreams for the future.http://www.forbes.com/sites/darden/2015/03/19/how-americas-educa-tion-model-kills-creativity-and-entrepreneurship-2/http://steve-olson.com/how-the-public-school-system-crushes-souls/https://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity?lan-guage=en

3. The Neglect of the ArtistHealthy communities have an abundance of art, music, and theater. The American society is that of the most shallow and morally incompetent media on the planet earth. Communities must support their artists to continue a healthy narrative between reality, imagination and the soul. America barely contributed to the arts before the recession – in comparison to every other modern nation. And today the amount that America gives to the arts is still significantly below the meager amount it gave before the recession. http://www.alternet.org/culture/culturally-impoverished-us-nea-spends-140th-what-germany-doles-out-arts-capitahttp://www.osborne-conant.org/arts_funding.htmhttp://www.nasaa-arts.org/Advocacy/Advocacy-Tools/Why-Government-Sup-port/WhyGovSupport.pdf

4. The Perpetuation of the OtherJust because someone doesn’t look like you, come from a familiar background, or practice the same cultural belief system or language, does not mean they are lesser than you. It is the year 2015 and America talks a lot about being a post racial society but it has also grown in new forms of discrimina-tion against people who are still struggling to live the American dream. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/race-relations-low-point-recent-his-tory-new-poll-suggests/http://www.rt.com/usa/322480-muslims-discrimination-americans-poll/http://www.progressive.org/news/2013/12/185826/study-muslim-ameri-cans-face-widespread-job-discrimination

5. The common beliefs on the poorAfrican societies believed if there was a member in your community that was ill or had a lack of resources it was the entire community’s duty to take care of that individual to make sure their needs were met. If we ignore the illness within our com-munity it affects the whole. In American society the belief persists that the poor are there because of their own fault and that nothing can be done to help them – because they did it to themselves. https://www.laprogressive.com/blaming-the-poor/http://www.nbcnews.com/feature/in-plain-sight/poll-fewer-ameri-cans-blame-poverty-poor-n136051

http://www.cnbc.com/2014/03/26/not-a-persons-fault-cnbc-survey.html

6. The Continued Support for Blind AmbitionPeople are still fighting to get to the top. The Amer-ican society loves this form of competition which encourages back stabbing shallow relationships and manipulation. This is despite the fact that hard evidence shows that you are least likely to move up in American society through hard work than other places in the World. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/economic-inequality-it-s-far-worse-than-you-think/http://www.globalresearch.ca/37-facts-about-how-cruel-this-economy-has-been-to-millions-of-desperate-american-families/5309938http://www.alternet.org/economy/how-rich-stole-our-money-and-made-us-think-they-were-doing-us-favor

7. The Continued Irrational Obsession with Mate-rial WealthObsessions with material wealth and a shallow relationship with the earth shows our species is going backwards not forwards. Even deep into a re-cession Americans still lust for material goods they don’t exactly need in order to live a happy life. For progression to occur we have to reestablish our con-nection to the physical world around us and start building deeper connections to living things – and move away from caring about inanimate objects.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/shanzeh-khurram/is-the-american-dream-bec_b_2702164.htmlhttp://madamenoire.com/57430/the-psychology-behind-our-obses-sion-with-material-wealth/

8. The Continued Dependence on Finite ResourcesWe have to think in terms of long term sustain-ability and change our perspective from a constant search for limited resources which encourages war, greed, famine, and turmoil - to a system which treats the earth with the concept of “you treat her right and she will provide for your needs in abun-dance”. Despite evidence of Climate Change, and the world not being able to sustain past practices of resource grabbing, modern society is still just as consumed by material consumption of limited resources as ever before. http://insideclimatenews.org/news/20090830/reduce-climate-change-re-duce-consumptionhttp://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/sep/25/abortion-and-death-penal-ty-come-before-climate-change-for-church-vatican-official-sayshttp://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/05/business/energy-environment/opec-meeting-oil-production-price.html

9. The Belief That There Should Be Privileged People The idea that some are more privileges than others is one of the most limiting mentalities within the psychological development of humankind. If we cannot let go ideologies that protect the idea that it is okay that there are more privileges for some than others - we will be unable to develop as a human species.http://www.theguardian.com/money/us-money-blog/2014/sep/26/rich-work-harder-ceos-jack-mahttp://www.chicagomag.com/city-life/January-2014/If-Youre-Rich-You-Prob-ably-Think-You-Deserve-It-Heres-Why/http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/business-jan-june13-makingsense_06-21/

10. The Lust for Violence. Acts of violence are some of the most animalistic behavior. Americans’ infatuation with violence has its roots in our deep need for survival. However, these base feelings are perpetuated in every format of entertainment to the point that the American depiction of spectacular violence seeps into all of our pictures of what normal reality is – when in reality the world is not that violent and humans are not intended to be this violent – America has just convinced Americans that a super heightened level of violence is in fact the actual norm when it is nothing but a mutated form of what is normal for humans. If human kind wishes to develop further we must outlaw acts of war and violence in America and see the display and glorification of violence in a light of old traditions, which are no longer needed.http://www.globalresearch.ca/violence-the-american-way-of-life/5318698http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2015/06/mass-shoot-ings-and-gun-controlhttp://www.usnews.com/opinion/articles/2011/12/23/why-ameri-ca-is-more-violent-than-other-democracieshttp://www.jpands.org/hacienda/stolinsky.html

Viking Soul Food GratinRestaurant owners spend countless hours

fretting over food stock and prices, catering to customers, negotiating with

suppliers and supervising staff.  How does a super-busy food entrepreneur stay on top of business and make time for a healthy meal? We asked Megan Walhood and Jeremy Daniels, co-owners of the popular, Portland, Oregon-based Viking Soul Food, and the answer was: Plan ahead and eat a good breakfast!“ One of the things we try to do as busy business owners is plan ahead when it comes to our food,” says Walhood. “Making big batches of soup can sustain a family throughout the week. Even a big batch of beans combined with different veggies, cheese, chicken, fish, etc., will create a variety of healthy, satisfying meals.” Walhood adds, “Hunger can lead to overeating, so breakfast is an important meal that will often get us through lunch. We’ll prepare a vegetable and cheese gratin or frittata, using eggs from pasture-raised chickens. This makes a tremendous difference in taste, not to mention nutritional value. We shop daily at a local farm stand and buy seasonal, another way to ensure robust flavor.” This gratin recipe can be prepped the night before. Walhood and Daniels suggest seasonal veggies, but you can substitute any variety. The frittata—found at www.

vikingsoulfood.com—can be wrapped in a pita or flatbread for an on-the-go breakfast treat. When sautéing the vegetables, bear in mind that any tubers (potato, parsnip, carrot or celery root) require longer cooking than the softer greens and veggies.

Viking Soul Food Gratin

1 tablespoon good olive oil

1 yellow onion, peeled and chopped into thumb-size pieces

1-2 parsnips (or carrots), peeled and chopped into

1/2-inch cubes

1 bunch EACH kale and chard, stems and leaves separated and roughly chopped

1/2 head garlic, about 5-6 cloves, peeled and thinly sliced

Kosher salt, ground black pepper

1 cup grated Jarlsberg cheese

Dash of vinegar

4 farm eggs, preferably from pasture-raised chickens

Instructions:

Heat olive oil in large skillet.  Add onion and parsnip and cook, stirring occasionally for 15 minutes.

Add kale/chard stems to pan. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring.

Add garlic slices and stir until they become aromatic.

Add kale/chard leaves. Season with salt and pepper, stir well, and cover; cook about 4-5 minutes.

Lay veggies in a roasting pan and top with grated Jarlsberg. You can stop here, cover and refrigerate, to finish the next morning.

Preheat broiler to medium. Heat a pot of water to just below a simmer; add a dash of vinegar.

Gently crack 4 eggs into hot water and poach about 3-4 minutes. Do not let water boil.

While eggs are poaching, heat vegetable dish in broiler until cheese is melty and golden.

Remove gratin from broiler. Using a slotted spoon, gently remove eggs from water and place atop the gratin. Season with coarse grating of salt and black pepper. Serves 4.

LOCAL MUSIC

Brandon ‘Fresno Slim’ Polin

Brandon Polin is a young blues/rock guitarist I’ve seen backing various blues performers in recent months at the

Wednesday Blues Jam hosted by Richie Blue and his trio at the Skyline Club in Clovis (7-10 pm)  He accompanies Rob Wyrrick regularly at the Blues Jam. Rob is an experienced blues singer

and guitarist. On occasion Brandon is second guitar to blues master guitarist and singer Richie Blue. He is at an age, 19, where sometimes a gifted guitarist will make huge strides in his playing. Brandon seems to have the motivation, work ethic and attitude to make rapid progress on the guitar. One month you’ll see him tearing up the guitar and then a month later, he’ll exceed himself and be playing at a new level. As a rule, young guys like Brandon, who are as talented as he is, have a unique opportunity move up to professional careers as musicians a lot quicker than most. I am betting Brandon will make that transition soon! Brandon and I met up recently at Barnes and Noble bookstore in Fresno and conversed about music, and where he’s been and where he’s headed.

Q: I’ve seen you playing with master blues guitarist/singer Richie Blue recently. What’s your relationship with Riche?

A: Richie is an incredible player and when he wants a second guitar and a quartet sound he gives me call. I feel like a student studying with a master. It’s great to be the kid on stage with Richie Blue.

Q: What kind of rig do you use?

A: I play a Les Paul Gibson plugged into a custom wired Fender 75 amp.

Q: Who or what inspired you to pick up a guitar?

A: My Grand Dad, Brian Waite encouraged me to play guitar. Its been six years since I first started playing.Q: Are you in a band now?

A: I played in a duo called Love and Anarchy with Tosh Martin for three years. Since then I’ve been playing at organized jams and on occasion playing select gigs with Richie Blue when he wants a quartet sound with a second guitar. Eventually I plan to hook up with a blues and or blues/rock group or form my own when the right players who share similar musical tastes, attitudes, and goals show up.

Q: Who, musically, has had the most influence on you?

A: Well, there’s many, but if I have to pick one… Eric Clapton.

Q: I have also seen you backing blues singer.

Matt MoultonWhen you think of blues masters it’s

normal that you refer to a long list of older musicians, some in the twilight of

their career such as guitarist/singer Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Elvin Bishop… and some who have passed on, such as the most famous blues artists of this era B.B King, Stevie Ray Vaughn whose brilliant career was cut short by a fatal helicopter accident, Muddy Watters, and a long list too numerous to name here. There are a number of young blues masters coming up who owe much to the legacy of the above mentioned musicians. Around the San Joaquin Valley, and Clovis-Fresno specifically, is a bass player who, at a very young age, has covered a lot of ground in the achievement category at a rather early age. Clovis based Matt Moulton has already toured Europe many times, Mexico and Fiji by the age of 29. That’s lot of territory to cover so young and so early in a career path.

I met up with Matt recently at JT’s Music in Clovis, where Matt not only teaches bass, but is also the assistant manager.

Q: So, Matt… What rhythm and blues artists have influenced you?

A: There are a lot of great bass players, but oddly enough it is jazz bassist Stanley Clarke who I’ve seen perform that has inspired me the most. Stanley is so musical and approaches bass in a unique and all encompassing way, he blew my

mind.

Q: As bassist for Fresno’s own famous blues band, The Mofo Party Band, what are you guys aiming for in the future?

A: Well, John Clifton has recently formed his own band, The John Clifton Band, and they have just returned from a tour of Poland and Denmark. John won the equivalent of a Grammy in 2015 in Poland for producing a CD for ‘The Boogie Boys’, a polish blues band, So Mofo is on hiatus at the present time. I’m playing bass for various artists and occasionally doing some studio work at Wolfe Sound. In February (10-26) I will be touring California and other cities on the West Coast with polish harmonica master, Michal Kielak. I am booking that tour and will play of some of those dates, as well as road manage on others as i will be ushering Mikhal around during his month long stay here.

Q: I notice on your resume you have been an agent for many years. How’s that?

A: Well most blues musicians book their own shows and it was just a natural progression for me. I got my own gigs and eventually joined the Mofo Party Band and had a surplus of gigs that I booked so I became an agent too.

Q: It says here you have booked jobs for over 1000 musicians?

A: Yes well, many of them don’t even know I booked them as I only dealt with the leader or business guy for many groups.

Q: What are you listening to?

A: Well, I hear music in all sound. The sounds of traffic, trains, the wind i hear as music so my experience sonically is always happening and I apply it to my work as a bassist.

MC: Well thanks for the chat. I want to wish you, your wife and loved ones a merry Christmas and best to you in 2016.

MM: Thank you and the same to you.

Matt is available for lessons and gigs and can be reached at JT’s Music, 325 Clovis Ave, Clovis (559) 326-0493.

Written by Marc Chenault

guitarist Rob Wyrrick at the Wednesday Jamfor awhile, how is it playing with Rob?

A: Rob’s an experienced bluesman and his experience, tips and friendship have meant a lot to me.

Rob Wyrrick has played for years in the San Joaquin Valley and toured with many older bluesmen when he was in Blues West. If you are out clubbing and/or bar hopping and find yourself in Sequoia Brewery North or Tower, and or the Skyline Club, and see a slim blonde dude on guitar with sunglasses on it’s probably Brandon “Fresno Slim” Polin. Sit down, grab a drink, and listen to what the guy is laying down. It may surprise you.

Brandon Polin is available for gigs. He can be reached at (559)970-9218.
