Remembering Veterans

This edition of The Valley’s Nickel is dedicated to all of of our men and women who have served our nation

in the military. I served in the National Guard and last month I found out I had been reclassified to veteran status. My Father served in World War II. Both sides of my family served in the Civil War, one branch of the family tree fought for the confederacy and the other side fought for the Union. The War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War are ongoing. Technically, they have not been officially declared as a war, but they sure look like war to me and I’m sure it feels that way to everyone who has ever set foot near the front lines. However, only history can evaluate the relevancy and necessity of these conflicts. I am focusing on the war of my generation, The Vietnam War. I originally sought service in the National Guard as an alternative to fighting in Vietnam. I was a photographer. Even so, some of my unit ended up being activated and I am sad to say that I do not know where they ended up. But, like many of you, there were some of my classmates who served in combat zones, and I do know where they ended up. They didn’t all make it out alive, and this is my tribute to them, to make sure their names and their services don’t go unnoticed as the years carry on. Tom Smiley was a teammate on my high schools cross country team for Bullard High School. He was the son of a doctor and didn’t have to go, he could have stayed in college but he didn’t… he volunteered. Tom died fighting in Vietnam. Alan Binatena was wounded in Vietnam. He laid on a dead pile for three days

before anyone realized he was alive. When he finally made it home, Alan spent a long time recovering in a hospital in San Francisco. Approximately five years ago he died of meningitis. The anti-seizure medication he took masked the symptoms of meningitis. He was a gifted artist and his son told me he had some of his father’s art. Once, I had asked Alan while we were having lunch how it was over there. His reply was simple,

“You don’t want to know”

Max Contreras was a friend who wrestled for McLane High School. Maxie, as he was known, was a highly touted wrestler and competed at the collegiate level before going to Vietnam. He was awarded The Bronze Star. Maxie and an officer repelled a night attack on his base. The Viet Cong had permeated the perimeter and cut the throats of the American soldiers who had fallen asleep. Max was one of the few who made it home, he found his footing in everyday life and became a computer consultant. Those were my classmates, and a friend whose story I know. There are 2 and a half million stories of citizens who served in Vietnam. Eleven thousand of them were women. Over fifty eight thousand of them died in Vietnam. Memorial day is a day of remembrance. A day of honoring our veterans. In closing, I hope my government will choose their battles more wisely and take the weight of the lives of our soldiers more seriously, not sending them in droves overseas without a real declaration. I also pray that my government will spare future generations the fog of war, for the only way to peace, is peace.

There’s An Oil For That! Kid edition.

The question is often asked, “Can I use therapeutic-grade essential oils for my children?” The answer is yes! Young

Living essential oils are safe for all ages and stages of life. Some kids enjoy the same oils as their parents, while other children prefer those products designed specifically for kids.    KidScents® Oil Collection is a comprehensive kit that addresses the most common concerns of childhood. This kit includes six, mild essential oil blends, formulated just for children:

o GeneYus™o Owie™o Bite Buster™o TummyGize™o SniffleEase™o SleepyIze™

Conveniently packaged in an easy-to-carry case, each collection comes with 2 roll-on fitments for easy application, especially for Owie™ and TummyGize™. This arsenal of proprietary blends has been formulated in the appropriate strength to meet the needs of children, and they are safe, natural alternatives to comparable products found on many store shelves.

With KidScents Oil Collection, parents and caregivers can safely and effectively navigate children through childhood to become healthy and happy adults.

SleepyIze – Everyone has trouble falling asleep from time to time – even kids. With this soothing and relaxing blend, bedtime will no longer be a battleground. SleepyIze will make them forget all about that last drink of water and fall right to sleep.

GeneYus – Kids of all ages need to feed their brains. Let GeneYus fuel your child’s intellect.

Owie – Minor scrapes and scratches easily disappear with Owie. Get your kids back to the business of playing.

SniffleEase – If your child is good at sharing all things – even germs, SniffleEase helps diminish a germ’s ability to camp inside your kid’s bodies.

Bite Buster – Insect bites, while not always serious, can be irritating and distracting.  Remove the itch and sting with Bite Buster.

TummyGize – When your children have an upset stomach – from eating unhealthy foods or stress – TummyGize helps to ease the discomfort created in the digestive tract. In addition to this fabulous collection, Young Living created a dynamic multivitamin that is all natural as well as vegetarian. Kidscents Mightyzyme are chewable and taste yummy. The number needed each day depends on your child’s age. This means that you no longer have to buy different vitamins for each individual in your

family. One bottle can address the needs of all of the younger members of your family. Kids can also enjoy the benefits of essential oils in their bath. Kidscents Bath Gel is pH balanced for children’s skin and protects sensitive skin while it cleanses. It is safe and gentle for all ages. After bath time, Kidscents Lotion moisturizes and softens sensitive skin as well as supporting healthy-looking skin. Using this lotion also creates a healthy habit of caring for your skin as your children get older. Kidscents Shampoo compliments bath time with a hair cleanser that contains no synthetic perfumes, colors, or toxic ingredients. Your kids will love bath time because it makes their skin feel so soothe, pampered, and healthy. The bathtub is not the only spot in the

bathroom where therapeutic-grade essential oils can be found.  Kidscents Tender Tush pampers those who are still in diapers. Kidscents Slique Toothpaste uses Thieves and Slique Essence oil blends to gently clean and protect teeth. This safe and effective blend promotes healthy teeth without the use of fluoride, dyes, synthetic colors, artificial flavors, or preservatives.   Introducing your children to therapeutic-grade essential oils at a young age creates and supports healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Teaching natural and chemical-free options for building and maintaining healthy bodies is a practice that they will thank you for teaching them when they are adults. Be the parent who is appreciated by their adult children!

Hearty stews and belly-warming soups are coming out of the kitchens; frost is sparkling, and winter jackets are

coming out of hiding. Families are craving slow-cooked, savory meals that yield health benefits and leftovers. Delicious, savory winter-recipe ingredients that will surely satisfy are white beans and Oso Sweet Onions, an onion grown at the foot of the Andes Mountains. Onions are not only believed to be a cancer preventative, their low-salt, low-fat health benefits are the proactive equivalent to superhero powers. Onions have 25 compounds that lower blood pressure and cholesterol, prevent thrombosis, inhibit strokes and battle heart disease, says the American Heart Association. Plus, the antioxidants and flavonoids found in onions don’t lose their potency once cooked. This makes them ideal for slow-cooked recipes. They add a punch of flavor and a whopping serving size, making them an affordable luxury during the chilly winter months. Use the following recipe for a tasty detour from your typical red chili.

Oso White Bean Chili

1 bag dried white beans 2 Oso Sweet Onions 1/2 cup Garlic (chopped) 1 pound ground chicken or turkey 1 cup celery (chopped) 1 tsp Oregano 1/4 cup Olive oil

2 each large green mild chili (deseeded) 2 quarts chicken stock or water (to cover)2 tsp Cumin

Directions:

Saute onions, garlic, celery, chilies, chicken/turkey for 10 minutes on medium heat.

Add half of the chicken stock. Then add salt, pepper, oregano and cumin and simmer for 45 minutes.

Then adjust with the remaining chicken stock. Combine all ingredients in crock pot or large heavy-bottomed pot, bring to a boil and then simmer overnight, or 8 hours.

Puree 1 cup beans for a thicker chili and serve.

Garnish with shredded cheese, fresh cilantro, tarragon or basil, chopped Tabasco peppers, raw chopped Oso Sweet onions or hot sauce.

FamilyMeux Home Museum Tours Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 12:00pm-3:00pm 1007 R St. at Tulare Fresno, CA 93721 The Meux Home Museum recaptures the flavor of Victorian Fresno by present-ing a middle-class residence furnished in the period, as a representative house muse-um. A costumed docent will lead you on a one hour tour of this restored urban dwelling of the 1890’s. The architecture of the Meux Home results in a calculated restlessness that makes the home as intriguing today as it was in its own day. The 10 rooms are furnished more or less as a Victorian family might have had them - the kitchen has a pie safe and the library; a portrait showing the young Dr. Meux on his way to join the Confederate Army. The Meux home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 14, 1975. Forestiere Underground Gardens Tour. The Under-ground Gardens are the life-long devotion and hobby of Baldassare Forestiere (1879-1946), a Sicilian immigrant who came to America in 1901 to escape the iron rule of his wealthy father and pursue his own dreams. The Gardens are a subterranean complex of patios, grottos, and garden courts interconnecting with passageways that encircle the living quarters of Baldassare Forestiere.

LOCAL MUSIC

Charlie DanielsEntreprenuer and teacher.

Local music isn’t just confined to the bands and artists performing at your neighborhood venue, it’s also about the

music shops that are owned independently and the faces behind them. The Central Valley is home to a fair number of talent, and often times there is a combination of that talent with entrepreneurship. Getting to know Fresno, or any Central Valley city, doesn’t just mean getting to know what’s happening right now, it also means getting to know yesterday, and the day before. In other words, its history. For this issue of The Valley’s Nickel, I chose to highlight Fresno local, Charlie Daniels. A man who has been gifting music to Fresno natives for nearly 30 years. For 27 years Mr. Daniels operated Charlie Daniels Music just south of where Gospel Music had been on Blackstone, a few blocks south of Shields. But his passion for music didn’t start there, he had been living music his whole life, starting from a very young age. Charlie Daniels’ family were a very musical bunch and he was completely immersed in music growing up. His father performed in the Chordsmen and

the Gospelaires. On weekends Charlie accompanied his dad to gigs all over California. At 18 he began teaching guitar at Gospel Music in Fresno. After some time being a teacher, Charlie decided to open his own business, Charlie Daniels Music. Juan Serrano, the internationally famous flamenco guitarist, actually gave private lessons at Daniels’ store for some time and then became head of the guitar department at Fresno State. Eventually, spending more time with his family became a priority for Charlie, as well as having a desire to pursue other interests, so he closed Charlie Daniels Music to make room for these. However, it wasn’t long before Charlie was persuaded to work for Sound Stage by long time manager, Jerry Lisle. It was a good fit as Charlie continued to sell and install PA systems for schools and churches in the area. If you’re familiar with Sound Stage, you know that it was sold and became what is now Legend Music, located at the corner of Blackstone and Dakota. Charlie not only provides his expertise in helping others choose their next guitar, but he also is available to teach how to play them.

Curious about how many guitars have passed through Charlie’s hands, I asked how many of them he suppose he’s found new homes for? He replied with,

“Thousands. All the top brands; Martin, Gibson, Fender, Peavey and Ibanez.”

For a guy who spent most of his life surrounded and imbedded in to the world of music, he must have a favorite guitarist. I asked Charlie, who in his opinion is the best in the world? Charlie thought long and hard before giving his answer,

“That is a difficult question because there are so many styles of playing, but if I

had to name one it would be Doyal Dykes. He is an amazing player.”

Cited as one of the best finger style guitarists in the world, Doyal Dykes is

mostly known for his American Country style. Dykes lives in Cleveland, Tennessee and is still performing around the world. If you’re thinking about learning the guitar, refining your skills or looking for some help in finding the right guitar for you, Charlie Daniels can most likely help you with that.

Charlie can be found Monday thru Friday at Legend Music located at Blackstone and Dakota in Fresno. Stop in and say ‘Hi’ or even just give him a call. He can be reached

at (559) 260-8262 or by calling Legend Music at (559) 224-

5277. Keep checking in with The Valley’s Nickel as I talk with more talented artists and musicians in the Central Valley.

introspection, love fading and attempts to revive it interspersed with a few light hearted tunes. This is not an easy listening blues CD, it does get down but its emotional honesty makes you embrace the songs because it is a precious gem of one writers’ experience told without any consolations. 21st Century Blues was released about seven years ago. It has remained one of my go to CDs, and in all that time I haven’t grown tired of it. As a matter of fact whenever I put it on again I am amazed that it resonates so deeply with me. The title track, 21st Century Blues is a cascade of blues guitar with lyrics that amuse and throw light on some of the new realities of our world. Its lyrics are poetic and this writer enjoys Heads’ use of language backed by an edgy guitar and blues shouter voice. Another tune that goes deep into Heads’ anti war stance is Parade in the Rain. A hauntingly beautiful ballad with an eloquent guitar melody. By the end of the song I am totally immersed in his emotional plea to stop the parades of wounded soldiers. “Why oh why do we parade in the rain?” Vacation from the Blues is a jazzy song about stopping overnight in a distant city, and instead of sleeping. going out and

wandering about seeking companionship and escape from the haunting midnight memories of a lost love. It’s a joyful hopeful song that emphasizes that living and loving go on despite our personal blues, and it’s better to join in the celebration than to remain mired in the past. Track 11 is my favorite. Titled Still On My Mind. It explores one mans reflections of love and how someone can still deeply love someone who is no longer in their life. The love song goes on in his heart even though the relationship ended long ago. With the power and passing that pours out of this album, I hope this CD gets reissued. During the original release there was no budget for promotion. There is some world class song writing here and if you run across one of the extant copies, do yourself a favor and buy it. My hopes are not entirely wishful thinking, word on the grapevine is that there is talk of 21st Century Blues being reissued. The album was produced by two local musicians, Randy Sharp, a Visalia native with songwriting credits on Reba’s and many other hit CDs, and bass player Ray Haney. They did an extraordinary job and I hope all blues fans get a chance to experience some of the best of our native sons.
