Stanley Thompson remains Canada’s greatest golfdesigner, the man behind many of the most iconiccourses in the country.

His genius is on full display at Dundas Valley whereThompson routed holes through an incredible land-scape to craft a truly unique design.

The brilliance of Thompson’s work at Dundas Valleyis that he found an incredible balance in the design,making it fun and always intriguing, regardless ofhow many times one tests their game against it.

The course has the timeless elements that go into aclassic design. The greens have Thompson’s signatureon them—you need to carefully consider where youleave your approach—and the fairways are generous,with plenty of shifts in elevation.

There’s no singular great hole at Dundas Valley—thecourse is full of them, all equally intriguing, revealingthemselves over time to those who challenges theirgames on its fairways.

THOMPSON’STREASURE

Dundas Valley is a club with a lengthy tradition. But that doesn’t meanit is a club that is standing still.

In recent years, Dundas Valley undertook a massive renovation of itsclubhouse, modernizing its features, and creating incredible views of thesurrounding Niagara escarpment. The newly refurbished clubhouse is adelight, and is both comfortable and modern. Changes included reworkingthe interior aesthetic, crafting a new grill room and bistro, and taking fulladvantage of the building’s spectacular location.

The reconceived building reopened in 2012, but the club’s improvementsdon’t stop there. In recent years, Dundas Valley has make significantenhancements to its practice facility, as well as its short and long course.

Mackenzie Hughes is one of Canadiangolf ’s great success stories. The winner ofthe RSM Classic during his rookie year onthe PGA Tour in 2016, Hughes fell in lovewith golf at Dundas Valley.

Hughes, who starred at Kent State incollege, and won consecutive CanadianAmateur titles, continues to have a deepconnection and affection for Dundas Valley.In 2017 the club renamed its short coursein honour of the golfer.

In recent years there’s been a significantmovement towards short courses. There areplenty of reasons—they take less time to play,they emphasize the importance of the shortgame, and they are playable in a small amountof time by golfers of all abilities.

Dundas Valley’s short course recognizesMackenzie Hughes, who cut his teeth pitchingand putting around this unique eight-holecourse. He remains a fan of it to this day—andfeels it is a great place for newcomers to thesport to find their passion for golf.

“I think par 3 courses are a great introductionto the game, especially the course at DundasValley, which has the extra-large cups on thegreens,” says Hughes. “I think there shouldbe more courses like that around. It's a bitmore of a gentle introduction to the game,and maybe those people who come to try itbecome curious what the next step is.”
