THE UPBRINGING OF A
CHILD. PART 2
CORRECTING A CHILD
Let us take a look at the blessed character
of our beloved Prophet s; how did he
deal with children when they would
made mistakes. Anas t narrates,
When I was a young boy I was seated at
the dastarkhan (tablecloth) of Prophet s.
I had the honour of sharing in the same
plate as him. Being a young child I used
to take morsels from different parts of the
plate. The Prophet s stopped me and
said, “O child, when you eat first recite
Bismillāh, eat with your right hand and
eat from that portion which is in front of
you.” (Al-Bukhārī)
The Prophet s would correct people’s
mistakes with the utmost kindness, as can
be understood from the above hadīth.
Being with the Prophet s it is clear that
Anas t must have noticed and heard the
Prophet s recite Bismillah and therefore
he also must have recited it. (We can
understand this with the example of when
a person is in the masjid and hears others
around him engaged in dhikr so
automatically he will also engage in
some sort of dhikr.) Secondly, being the
nephew of Prophet s surely it must have
been imbedded in his mind that we must
eat with the right hand as Shaytān eats
and drinks with the left. But the question
arises, as to why Prophet s added two
extra points when there was only one
aspect which needed to be addressed?
The Prophet s knowing the temperament
of man, that he does not like being told of
his short coming and defects, addressed
the issues with wisdom; that this is the
first time I have seen him do this, in
order to correct my nephew let him be
reminded of some etiquettes which he
already does whilst eating. This is why
he added the two extra advices which
Anas t was already doing, and the most
important - which was his mistake - was
mentioned at the end.
Lets us ponder as to how we deal with
our young ones when they slip-up. On
many occasion the child is scolded and
yelled at straight away, this does not help
in the mental and emotional growth of
the child. These acts can come back to
haunt us when the child is older, as he/
she will only remember this point of
being yelled and shouted at, despite the
many other benefits that we provide for
our children. As parents must learn to
keep a healthy balance in our harshness
and kindness towards our children; this
will aid in bringing up the child whilst
still maintaining the love and respect
within the child.
SPENDING TIME WITH THE
CHILD.
Out of busy timetables and the hustle and
bustle of our daily life, it is very
important that we take out some part of
the day for our children, so that we can (Continued on page 3)

What to do at the time of Natural Catastrophes. By Shaykh-ul-Ḥadīth, Ḥaḍrat Mawlānā Muhammad
Saleem Dhorat ḥafiẓahullāh Everyone is aware of the devastation that natu-
ral disasters bring with them. Many lose their
lives, hundreds of thousands lose relatives, en-
tire communities are wiped out and countless
buildings and properties are destroyed. Thou-
sands, even millions are left homeless, having
lost everything they once owned, living under
open skies with nothing to eat and cover them-
selves with. Even after the calamity has sub-
sided, the death toll continues to increase with
the spread of disease.
When calamities strike, we often think about
our roles and responsibilities, as human beings
and as Muslims. It is unfortunate that for most
of us, it takes such calamities to make us re-
flect on the Power and lofty Attributes of Al-
lāh S. Rather than expressing shallow sorrow
and a momentary shock, there are a few points
that we need to reflect and act upon, so that
events like these can cause us to become better
Muslims for the rest of our lives:
1. Allāh S is the Ḥākim (The Supreme
Ruler) and the Ḥakīm (The Most Wise)
First of all, one has to reaffirm in one’s mind
and heart that whatever happens, whether
good or bad in appearance, is according to the
Wish of Allāh S. Allāh S is Ḥākim i.e. He
has Power over everything. Every single parti-
cle in the whole universe is under His Control.
The turning of the leaf in the air while it is fal-
ling from the tree, to the up turning and shak-
ing of the earth itself, as in the case of an
earthquake, everything is in His Absolute
Control. The commands, wishes and controls
of everyone else are subjugated to His Com-
mand and Governance. The varied circum-
stances that one observes or experiences in
one’s life are also in His total Control.
There are many incidents and events in a
person’s life, during which one hopes for a
positive outcome through worldly means e.g.
when a relative is seriously ill we can hope for
recovery by consulting a specialist, along with
our belief that only that will happen which Al-
lāh S has ordained. Nevertheless we take the
help of worldly means to satisfy ourselves and
try to rectify the situation to the best of our
ability.
However, when faced with natural disasters
like storms, earthquakes and floods, there is no
hope of any worldly means which we can em-
ploy to circumvent, overcome or prevent re-
occurrence of such situations. Such natural
disasters are entirely in the Control of Al-
mighty Allāh and we are forced to acknowl-
edge that. Indeed as Muslims we should never
have disregarded and ignored the Absolute
Power of Allāh S and it should have been re-
flected upon in our day to day actions and
deeds.
However, it is comforting to know that Allāh
S is not only the Ḥākim (The Supreme Ruler)
but He is also the Ḥakīm (The Most Wise).
Allāh’s S Governance of the universe is
unlike that of worldly rulers. His Control and
Governance is full of Supreme Wisdom and
Divine Justice. Hence even in natural disas-
ters, there is the hidden Wisdom of the Al-
mighty, which may not be apparent to our
physical eyes.
2. Turn Towards Allāh S in Repentance
Every person, during such times should turn
towards Allāh S with humbleness, faith and
genuine repentance. According to the
Sharī‘ah, common and open disobedience of
Allāh S is one of the many reasons for the
cause of calamities like earthquakes. When the
(Continued on page 3)

land is overloaded with the disobedience of Allāh S, earthquakes from beneath and violent storms
from above are commonplace. There are various scientific explanations as to why natural disasters
occur, however the underlying facts point towards ‘how’ they happen and not ‘why’ they happen.
The answer to ‘why’ and ‘when’ and even to ‘how’, in reality, remains with Allāh S. An answer to
‘why’ has been revealed in the Qur’ān:
(Corruption and) Mischief has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men
have earned, that He (Allāh) may give them a taste of some of their deeds in order that they
may turn back (from evil). (30:41)
Incidents like these are, as it were, ‘wake up’ calls from Allāh S. Allāh S in His Infinite Mercy
is jolting us through such incidents, so that we may mend our ways and reflect on our transgres-
sions and as a result rectify ourselves before it is too late. Allāh S has revealed to his beloved
Prophet s, that as long as this Ummah continues to repent for their wrong-doings, He will not pun-
ish them through calamities. Incidents like these should not be viewed with some momentary sym-
pathy or investigated out of curiosity, but treated strictly as a reminder to wake up and reflect on
our lives of disobedience. The way Allāh S has the Power to cause calamities in any part of the
world, He also has the Power to cause a catastrophe here, in this very city, in the very vicinity of
our homes.
Hence it is absolutely essential for Muslims, not just from the affected regions, but from all over
the world, to turn towards Allāh S. They must direct all their attention towards Him and reflect on
their lives to find out where the Commands of Allāh S are being violated, then sincerely repent
and resolve to adorn their future lives with taqwā, abstain from the disobedience of Allāh S, and
observe His Commands. (continued in next issue)
(Continued from page 2)
converse with them. Ask them how their day was, what they had learnt in school/madrasah. Help them with
homework, show humour to them and make them feel that they are loved and that they are wanted, like we had
mentioned before: if we don’t give our children enough attention they will go looking for attention elsewhere,
amassing wealth and giving gifts will not gain the love of the child as affectively as spending time with them will.
This is also a Sunnah of our beloved Prophet s. Being given the hardest responsibility and task a person can
have, he never failed to take out time for his family. He had a portion of the day for the Dīn of Allāh S, he had a
portion of the day to deal with issues and concerns of the Sahābah y, he had a portion of the day where he would
deal with delegates who came to him to learn about Islām, he had a portion of the day where he would sit in the
court room of Madinah and deal with issues between the people, he had a portion of the day where he would
attend to the needs of an ever growing Islāmic empire and he had a portion of the day for just him and Allāh S.
Despite all these responsibilities he had a portion of the day for just him and his family. ‘Ā’ishah t would say
that the Prophet s would carry out all his own chores and would help with the chores at home. Can we say that
we are too busy to take out a little time for our children?

LESSONS FROM ḤĀDĪTH
Imām Bukhārī v reports on the authority of Abū Hurayrah y that the Prophet of Allāh s said:
“I swear by the Being in Whose Hands my life lies, none of you can become a perfect believer until I
become more beloved to him than his parents and offspring.” (Al-Bukhārī)
Q. We all claim to have love for the Prophet s, but when we ponder and look deep within ourselves we
realise that our īmān (faith) is incomplete and our love for other things besides the Prophet Q is far greater.
For example, the love for our parents, wife, children, family, friends and businesses. So how does one in this
condition attain complete faith in this day and age?
A. First we must understand that love is of two types:
(محبة طبعي .1 ) Natural love, which requires no effort from one’s own side. For example the love and
inclination one feels upon seeing a mithai (Indian sweet).
Intellectual love. One feels no real inclination towards it, but after pondering for a (محبة عقلي) .2
while, his intellect tells him what is right and what is wrong. For example, a person with diabetes
sits down to eat and before him a sweet dish is brought and a bitter dish. He is inclined towards
the sweet dish. This is natural love. However he knows that if he eats it, it could lead to his death.
Now his intellect will tell him to eat the bitter dish as he knows that if he eats it he will live longer.
This is intellectual love. In the hadīth above the mention of love is referring intellectual love.
Everyone has this intellectual love within them; this is the effect of īmān. The outcome of this can be seen
when faced with a scenario. For example, when the respect and honour of the Prophet Q is targeted and
mocked, it can be seen that the love of the Prophet Q forces many onto the streets and some even further,
(Whether it be according to the teachings of Islām is a different issue altogether). The reason for this is that a
person ponders upon what is right and wrong, the more one ponders then this intellectual love will gradually
turn into natural love through which practising on Deen and Shari‘ah will become easier, this is why the Com-
panions of the Prophet s were able to imitate the Prophet s in every minute detail.
‘Allamah ‘Aynī v states:
“A person is loved for three reasons,
( کمال .1 ) Perfection. A footballer is loved for perfection in the game of football.
Beauty. A man can be blinded by the beauty of a woman even though she possesses no other (جمال) .2
worthy qualities.
Favours. Like a person who was raised as an orphan and thinks about the favours of his (احسان) .3
guardians.
The more of these reasons are found in a person the greater the love. Similarly every reason has differing lev-
els of these three reasons. The higher the level, the greater the love. All three reasons are found in our Prophet Q at their peak!

Dear Sister
Hadhrat Khadijah Bint Khuwaylid t PART 2
( Ustadhji Mohammed Surti)
The Prophet s was then twenty-five years of
age and Khadijah t was forty years old.
(According to one ḥadīth, she was twenty-
eight). The two uncles of the Prophet s
Hamzah t and Abu Talib approached her
uncle, 'Umar bin Asad, with the formal
proposal. It was accepted and the two families
began preparing for the wedding.
Khadijah t was very blessed in the marriage,
and had six children. First two sons, Qāsim
and 'Abdullah; then followed the daughters,
Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthum and
Fatimah. It was a very happy, peaceful and
content household, but Muhammad s felt
something was missing, and he was extremely
restless. He would retire for a month, once a
year, to the cave of Hirā to dedicate himself
entirely to prayer and meditation. One day he
felt the presence of another person who held
him in his arms in a tight embrace. Then he
loosened his hold and asked him to read;
Muhammad s answered that he was illiterate.
But the person repeated the same act and the
phrase again and again. Then finally he read
the following Āyaat which are the first
revelation of the Qur’ān;
“Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has
created (all that exists). He has created man
from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most
Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the
pen. He has taught man that which he knew
not.” [Surah Iqra 96:1-5]
Then the person disappeared. This was such
an awesome experience that the Prophet s
returned home sweating and shaking. He
called out to Khadijah t asking her to cover
him with a sheet or a blanket. When he had
calmed down to some extent, he told his wife
that he feared for his life, and narrated the
whole incident to her. Khadijah t, a picture
of loyalty and serenity, consoled him saying
that Allāh S would surely protect him from
any danger, and would never allow anyone to
revile him as he was a of man of peace and
reconciliation and always extended the hand
of friendship to all. He never lied, always
hospitable, carried the burdens of others and
helped those who were in trouble. These
calming and encouraging words of sympathy
and understanding from Khadijah t gave him
immeasurable strength and confidence. She
then took him to meet her cousin, Waraqah bin
Nawfal, who immediately guessed the identity
of the person in the Cave of Hirā as the Angel
Jibra’il u who had visited Musa u as well.
Waraqah who was very old wished that he
could live to see the time when the Prophet
Muhammad s would be forced into exile by
his people. The Prophet s was very surprised
and asked if his people would really do this to
him. Waraqah assured him that it was typical
of human beings that they would never
appreciate or follow a Prophet who rose
among them.

One Minute Lesson By Mawlānā Adam Loonat (Al-Hidayah Foundation)
Sunnah of Entering the toilet
1. Before entering the toilet read the du‘ā.
اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الخبث والخبائث
O Allāh, I seek refuge with you from all male and female shayateen.
..
2. Whilst going to the toilet Nabi s always used to wear shoes and cover his head
(ideally we should wear some sort of footwear and wear a topi)
3. Enter the toilet with the left foot.
4. Any item on which there is the name of Allāh S, Nabi s or a verse of the Qur’ān should
be removed before entering the toilet.
5. It is best to lower oneself as much as possible before removing any item of clothing.
6. When wearing ones clothes, first insert the right hand and then the left. Similarly when
wearing the trousers, first enter the right foot/leg followed by the left.
7. Whilst relieving oneself, we should not face nor have our backs towards the Qiblah. ...
Note: Great care should be taken when buying a house or refurbishing a bathroom, that the toilet is not
positioned in a way that we face or have our backs towards the Qiblah.
....
8. Whilst in the toilet we should not talk, unless in dire need.
9. The left hand should be used to clean the private parts after relieving oneself.
Allāh S has blessed mankind with numerous and uncountable blessings. To be able to relieve oneself with ease is also a great blessing of Allāh S. Once a Sahābi t was with Sayyidunā Umar t and they saw a person with a few illnesses (leprosy, blindness etc.) Sayyidunā Umar t asked his colleague do you see any blessings of Allāh S in this person. His colleague replied “No”. Sayyidunā Umar t mentioned that this person is able to relieve himself with ease, this is also a great blessing of Allāh S. All human beings whether male or female, young or old, strong or weak, we all need to relieve ourselves. Allāh S has made the human body such that when we need to relieve ourselves we feel an urge to do so. When we relieve ourselves, if we keep the above few sunan in mind this will become a rewarding act, because we are doing this action in accordance to the sunnah of Prophet s.
