The Warfield Center is the cornerstone of African and African diaspora studies at UT Austin. Since 1969 the center has explored the cultural, political, economic, and historical experiences of African-descended people with participation from faculty and students in a variety of fields including history, English, anthropology, and art and art history. The center is a place where students, faculty, and community members can enhance their university experience through a variety of programs involving Africa, the African diaspora, blacks in the United States, and expressive culture, cultural politics, and representation. How You Can Make a Difference

Free Minds Project

The Free Minds Project provides adults with low to moderate incomes the opportunity to pursue educational dreams they may have missed earlier in life. Free tuition, books, and child care make it possible for adults to explore their intellectual potential in a humanities curriculum that includes literature, history, art, and philosophy. Part of the UT Austin Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, Free Minds supports students with college and career counseling, financial-aid information, and field trips to local museums and theater performances. Free Minds graduates jump-start their college career by earning six college credits.(www.utexas.edu/diversity/ddce/freeminds)

Drama for Schools

Drama for Schools (DFS) is an innovative professional-development program housed in the College of Fine Arts Department of Theatre and Dance. DFS offers drama-based strategies such as theater games, improvisation, and role-playing to engage teachers and students in the learning process. Collaborations with districts across Texas have had a significant impact on students and their communities. Teachers report an increased enthusiasm for teaching, students are authentically engaged in learning, and districts report an increase in TAKS scores.(www.finearts.utexas.edu/tad/special_programs)

Urban Education Pilot Program

A partnership between the University of Texas Elementary School and the College of Education, the Urban Education Pilot Program aims to increase teacher retention in urban schools by providing targeted, research-based training and strategic tools for teachers entering the field. The program prepares teachers for the unique challenges and opportunities encountered in an urban school setting. Most important, the program focuses on building students’ social and emotional skills in order to maintain a productive and respectful school environment. (www.utelementary.org/about/programs)
