In this special online-only opinion column, Jon William Toigo, CEO of consultancy and research fi rm Toigo Partners LLC, goes against popular industry sentiment and questions the value of server-virtualization products. Writes Toigo:

“That virtualization of servers, storage and networks is inevitable should be taken as a given. It’s only logical that, as hardware becomes commoditized, software should scale independently of the kit … A corollary to this inevitability thesis is also true. Perpetuating a tight coupling of software to hardware eventually hobbles engineers and IT administrators alike with respect to important things like design improvement, scaling of performance and capacity, and management. Tight coupling leads to unwieldy and proprietary stovepipe products that obfuscate heterogeneous management and drive up cost of ownership in heterogeneous environments. In the end, IT costs too much.”

HOARD

Mastering ManagementJust in case you haven’t caught one of my blogs, please allow me to introduce myself as the new editor in chief of Virtualization Review. My name is Bruce Hoard, and to put bookends on my career, I started out with Computerworld back in the early ’80s and was founding editor of Network World. I then spent 20 years as a freelance writer and editor before being hired into this new role by Doug Barney—who obviously has an eye for talent, not to mention craggy good looks.

Prior to taking this job, I wrote a few white papers and magazine articles on virtualization. But all that was really only dabbling compared to what I’ve been doing in my fi rst few weeks on the job: a fl urry of vendor briefi ngs, user interviews and immersing myself in all things virtual.

It didn’t take long for me to get a handle on the importance of managing and controlling virtualization environments. In fact, it seems like almost every day a new survey drives home that idea.

Case in point: This past summer, Network World reported on a survey conducted by Network Instruments LLC, a vendor of network-analysis software tools. In this survey, 442 IT pros revealed that while 75 percent of respondents were deploying virtualization, “They lacked the adequate tools, visibility or information about their virtual environments to troubleshoot their problems.”

Entitled “Security and Trust: The Backbone of Doing Business over the Internet,” this survey discovered that respondents might not have the money required to invest in the tools they needed to manage their advanced environments. Why? Because 73 percent were being asked to do more with fewer resources. Among those tightening budgets, more than half of those polled said the reduction in fi nancial resources could lead to IT degradation and failures.

Talk about a recipe for disaster: You install this disruptive technology that touches your servers and networks, and then you realize you don’t have the means to manage it. What happens if there are major problems? How can you resolve them if you lack the necessary tools and information?

Meanwhile, virtualization technology continues to improve and proliferate. The Network Instruments survey went on to note that in 2009, an estimated 27 percent of applications are sitting on virtual servers. The survey also predicted that number would rise to 44 percent in 2010 and 60 percent by 2011.

Thomas Bittman, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner Inc., is also forecasting bullish numbers. He says that the installed base of virtual machines (VMs) will increase by a factor of 10, reaching 58 million VMs by 2012.

Asked what decision makers such as CIOs dislike about virtualization, Bittman cites “a new layer of complexity” that requires them to be very careful about how they manage their resource pools. In his worst-case scenario, companies that mismanage their virtualization installations run the risk of undoing key confi guration-management and performance-management processes that may have been defi ned—and refi ned—over the course of years.

“All those processes have to change when I virtualize,” he notes. “I have to change how I do capacity planning; how I deal with speed and virtualization; how I deal with offl ine images. I have to change all my processes, so it’s very disruptive.”

It is with these challenges in mind that we offer our 2010 Ultimate Virtualization Buyer’s Guide, which is included in this issue. In addition to offering a slew of management tools from a variety of vendors large and small, it contains a wealth of other helpful products that cover the virtualization market from A to Z.

POINT COUNTERPOINT

As our industry defi nes best practices for large-scale deployment of desktop virtualization, user experience has become the proving ground for

IT and end users. XenDesktop provides advanced HDX technologies to deliver a high-defi nition experience on any device, over any network. When comparing features, VMware View lacks several capabilities that users expect to see, including PC-like Flash experience, broad smartcard support, voice, video and webcam support, VoIP softphone compatibility, bi-directional audio, WAN optimization support, single sign-on and 3-D professional graphics capabilities to name a few.

As customers quickly fi nd out, delivery protocols are just one part of the equation. Optimizations are needed across the entire delivery infrastructure.

Here XenDesktop comes out ahead. To prove this, Citrix conducted internal tests to measure protocol throughput. (Note: Tests can easily be replicated using publicly available tools and WAN emulators. A WAN emulator is not needed when testing in a LAN environment.) A load-testing tool ran a series of randomized applications including Microsoft Offi ce, Web content, and Flash audio and video. We ran the tests for 30 minutes or more with no Flash acceleration, redirection or throttling on either product. Chart 1 shows the results.

To get a view of performance requirements to address professional 3-D graphics users—even over the WAN—we tested XenDesktop and HDX 3D against the hardware version of PC over IP (PCoIP). VMware has since released a software version of Teradici’s PCoIP. HDX 3D consumed 90 percent less bandwidth than hardware PCoIP—even at the lowest performance settings (see Chart 2, p. 10).

XenDesktop: High Performance and FlexibilityBy Harry Labana

Desktop virtualization is quickly changing how businesses are delivering desktops to end users. Desktop virtualization should deliver a seamless

experience for all applications and media to a range of end users, while enabling IT to easily secure and manage desktops. To achieve these benefi ts while meeting the expectations of end users requires a tightly integrated solution that can also provide a superior user experience. VMware View, with the PC over IP (PCoIP) protocol, robust feature set, platform integration, broad ecosystem and best ROI, provides a true end-to-end solution and the best user experience for the widest range of end users.

In a typical enterprise, users vary from simple task workers with a fi xed set of applications and limited graphics requirements, to knowledge workers and power users who demand an uncompromised computing experience. Power users utilize a range of applications and access to content, including rich media and graphics. All end users demand an uninhibited, rich experience from their desktop environments, and in many cases they demand this from a range of devices and locations.

Foundation for Virtual Desktop DeliveryVMware View with PCoIP technology is purpose-built for delivering an uncompromised desktop experience across the widest range of users, tasks and locations, ensuring the best user experience regardless of network conditions. It is an innovative display protocol that compresses, encrypts and encodes the entire computing experience at the data center and transmits it across a standard network to end points, which can be running PCoIP hardware, or using VMware View’s software-based client. The compression algorithm adapts dynamically with existing conditions to enable the best user experience for a given network connection.

When network parameters change, the adaptive nature of the protocol helps by progressively refi ning the desktop in an effi cient manner to maintain the optimal user experience; the protocol actually senses the content being rendered, and prioritizes based on what’s most important to the end user. As a result, it addresses the demanding requirements of even the highest-end power users.

Coming next issue: Private Cloud ComputingUpFront

The user experience of PCoIP degraded signifi cantly as bandwidth decreased from an open LAN to lower speeds. HDX 3D remained stable while PCoIP began to falter. At 2Mbps, PCoIP was unusable. It is logical to conclude that the software version of PCoIP will not perform as well as the hardware version. PCoIP will not work in a Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (RDS) environment, further reducing potential total cost of ownership benefi ts.

Achieving ROI with Every Use CaseTo achieve strong ROI with desktop virtualization, we believe there are four factors to consider:

1. On-Demand Applications: The cost and complexity of desktop management is a direct result of applications running on each user’s desktop. Integrating the capabilities of XenApp technology into XenDesktop 4 signifi cantly improves ROI by making application delivery an integrated part of overall desktop management.

2. Flexible Delivery Models: VDI only serves a subset of users. XenDesktop 4 includes FlexCast delivery technology, allowing IT to mix-and-match delivery scenarios, which can be executed from a centrally managed solution.

3. Network Infrastructure Costs: By optimizing user experience at every point—endpoint, network and data center—HDX provides the best user experience using the existing network infrastructure.

4. Open Architecture: XenDesktop fully supports Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware ESX and VMware vSphere, giving customers choice. View is locked into the VMware hypervisor platform and the required version may not match the version deployed.

Combining inadequate performance with a single, VDI-only, locked-in architecture is not the way to improve ROI and end-user satisfaction. Customers need high virtual desktop performance and fl exibility that support an increasingly distributed workforce to achieve the best ROI given the diverse requirements. Citrix XenDesktop 4 with HDX and FlexCast technologies helps customers achieve this goal. VR

Harry Labana is CTO, Desktop Division, Citrix Systems Inc.

Seamless User ExperienceVMware View includes a range of technologies to ensure a seamless, natural user experience, even exceeding that of the traditional desktop. USB redirection simplifi es support for locally attached peripherals, so when plugged in to the local client, the input is automatically mapped to the virtual desktop without user intervention. Multimedia redirection ensures top performance for the delivery of rich media by eliminating concerns related to network conditions and leveraging local computing power for the best user experience.

Platform Matters Tight integration with VMware vSphere means VMware View users benefi t from the rich and robust feature set of the industry-leading virtualization platform, delivering high availability, fault tolerance and scalability. These capabilities, traditionally reserved for server infrastructures, are now extended to the desktop.

The Ecosystem of Partners VMware’s broad partner ecosystem ensures that customers can deploy VMware View with their choice of components to build the best solution. Working with vendors who provide components ranging from PCoIP hardware end points and other thin clients, to security, storage and network infrastructures, means customers can implement an end-to-end solution that delivers the right level of service to meet end-user demands.

Highest ROIVMware View has been shown to reduce the annual cost of PC ownership by 50 percent, resulting in savings of $600 or more per end user. Savings result from signifi cant reduction in IT staff support costs and reduced downtime. According to research fi rm IDC, on average, customers can realize a payback period as short as 5.6 months. At $250 per seat, VMware View is also less expensive than other solutions.

Complete PackageVMware View 4 provides a comprehensive solution for delivering virtualized desktops and the best user experience for the widest range of end users. Together these components—the rich PCoIP protocol, robust feature set, platform integration and high ROI—are changing they way people deploy and interact with desktops. VR

Check out our latest blogs at VirtualizationReview.com/blogsUpFront

As virtualization becomes more mainstream, there are many anticipated developments and

advancements on the horizon. Here’s a brief lay of the land, in addition to players you should watch for in the coming year.

Better network infrastructure management, Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) and dynamic provisioning. There are several vendors working in these areas to make it easier to deploy new virtual machines (VMs) and complete virtual infrastructures. One newcomer to watch is LineSider.com, as it works to virtualize network infrastructures. VMware’s vNetwork Distributed Switch in vSphere can centrally manage virtual networking features of all of its hosts and VM instances. And Novell’s PlateSpin Orchestrate continues to be one of the best ways to start, stop, migrate or clone VMs across VMware, Microsoft and Xen environments. Microsoft is playing catch-up with Hyper-V, and now includes a live migration feature to move a VM from one host to another.

Better VM policy-management tools. As virtualization becomes more pervasive, you may need additional granularity and security to prevent employees from gaining access to your infrastructure. This is where third-party tools can come in handy. HyTrust’s appliance can protect access to the hypervisor, while VMware’s vShield Zone appliance protects guest VMs. Finally, Microsoft’s new System Center Essentials 2010 has improvements that make Hyper-V’s policy management more fl exible.

VM Licensing can only get better—or at least moreunderstandable. It’s hard to say who has the more inscrutable licensing, Microsoft or VMware. There’s a growing feature gap between free and fee versions, especially once you load up your hosts with management apps, operating systems and user-application licenses. One of the advantages of going with Hyper-V running on the Enterprise version of Windows Server 2008 is that you can have unlimited free licenses for your guest Windows VMs, which can add up to a signifi cant savings. We can only hope that both vendors simplify their licensing in the coming year.

More selection on hypervisors that are pre-installed on servers. Dell PowerEdge, HP ProLiant and IBM BladeCenter all offer a selection of rack-mounted servers with either VMware ESX or Citrix XenServer. A few vendors are starting to look at pre-loading Hyper-V, too. Look for bigger and better servers from these and other server vendors in the coming year.

Hypervisor scalability and performance improvements. As people build larger and more complex VM infrastructures, it’s nice that the latest versions of all hypervisor products will come with full 64-bit goodness inside and support more CPUs. (Hyper-V supports up to 64 logical processors and 384 concurrent VMs, although building

a server that can handle that large a workload could be a challenge.) Look for more capable hypervisors in the future. As an example, VMware vLockstep adds high-availability mirroring on two different hosts. And the Cisco Unifi ed Computing System platform allows for high-density VM confi gurations: It can handle 384GB of RAM and doesn’t require the purchase of four CPU licenses for hypervisors, saving some money in the long term.

Continued maturing of application-virtualization tools. This includes layering and applications streaming in real time. It also includes protection, so you can run multiple versions of the same app, provide better

support for offl ine users and reduce licensing expenses of desktop apps. Microsoft App-V, Symantec Endpoint Virtualization Suite, Citrix XenApp and VMware ThinApp will all see big improvements in 2010. There’s a great comparison chart from Sven Huisman of these and a few other application-virtualization tools available at http://tinyurl.com/n2k7jk.

As you can see, a lot is happening, so look for bigger and better virtualization tools in the coming year. VR

As the virtualization juggernaut continues to build momentum, it’s incumbent upon both current and potential virtualization users to research the market for products that fi t their specifi c needs. It’s not just all about server virtualization anymore. Desktop virtualization—aka Virtual Desktop Infrastructure—storage

virtualization and network virtualization are just a few of the new product categories luring users with their possibilities and challenging them with their promises.

In order to help you make the best virtualization choices, we have compiled and now off er this year’s version of The Ultimate Virtualization Buyer’s Guide. Putting this mother of all virtualization buyer’s guides together involved contacting and soliciting product information across 12 diff erent categories, running the gamut from Virtualization Security to Cloud Computing.

In addition to including a new crop of 2010 products, we also painstakingly reviewed submissions from last year’s guide, which involved getting in touch with many vendors to get the low-down on any changes they have made to their products. We hope you fi nd this information helpful, and we look forward to off ering even more next year.

Also, be sure to check out an extended PDF of the Buyer’s Guide online at VirtualizationReview.com/Hoard1209. The extended PDF contains more listings, more product information and more insights into choosing the best products for your business.

Q Who is Citrix Systems?A We are a software and services company focused on deliver-ing applications over a network and the Internet. Centraliza-tion, optimization and virtualization have been the focus of Citrix product innovation, strategic acquisitions, go-to-market partnerships, and talent development for over twenty years. It’s why we remain fundamentally committed to our vision— a world where anyone can work and play from anywhere.

Q Citrix has been around for 20 years, what has changed?A Years ago, mainframe computing dominated the enterprise. Then came distributed computing, which brought computing power, applications and flexibility out to millions of desktops everywhere. Today, traditional distributed computing is beginning to collapse under the weight of its own complexity.Citrix allows IT to evolve from distributed computing to a dramatically simpler, service-oriented model. Leveraging virtualization, cloud computing, network optimization and on-demand collaboration, Citrix empowers IT with the flexibility it needs to respond to a dynamic, changing world. The introduction of Citrix XenDesktop™ 4, Citrix’s desktop virtualization solution, represents a decision on the part of Citrix to focus on growth, capitalizing on the opportunity of accelerating adoption of desktop virtualization and an increasingly strategic role in our customers’ business operations.

Q Is desktop virtualization the same as VDI?A VDI, or “virtual desktop infrastructure”, refers to the process of running an end user desktop inside a virtual machine that lives on a server in the datacenter. However, VDI is only one form of desktop virtualization. Most companies have a broad diversity of users, including task workers, power users, guest workers, contractors and mobile employees. While VDI works great for some of these use cases, it’s entirely unsuitable for

others. With XenDesktop, customers can choose from any of the popular server-side virtual desktop models, including VDI, blade PCs, and traditional server-based computing, as well as client-side virtual desktop models that execute at the end point. With XenDesktop, customers no longer have to bet on just one form of desktop virtualization and can instead deliver the best desktop for every user, every time.

Q What are the expectations for desktop virtualization?A Today’s digital workforce won’t compromise: on one hand they demand the flexibility to work from anywhere at any time using any device they’d like, yet on the other hand they demand the high definition experience that they would get in the office. Leveraging XenDesktop, users can access their desktop and corporate applications from any PC, Mac, thin client or smartphone, with better reliability and higher availability than a traditional PC—all while getting a high definition multimedia experience. This enables complete workplace flexibility, business continuity and user mobility.

Q Can you tell us about your relationship with Microsoft?A Citrix has a rich history of embracing and extending Microsoft’s platform. As such, Microsoft endorses XenDesktop as the premier desktop virtualization solution for enterprise and complex environments. XenDesktop 4 strengthens our partnership and product alignment by plugging into App-V,Remote Desktop Services, Hyper-V Server and System Center, providing the most comprehensive solution to virtual and physical desktops. Microsoft shares our view that desktop virtualization is broader than VDI and shares a common vision of user centric computing. Together, the joint solution provides the best user experience, integrated management and the most comprehensive and cost effective solution to service the different user types and business drivers.

TAKE FIVE 5 TIPS AND TRICKS TO TAKE WITH YOU : : BY KEITH WARD, FORMER EDITOR IN CHIEF

THINGS I’LL MISS MOSTParting is such sweet sorrow.

Send your thoughts on what you like best about the magazine and what you’d like changed to [email protected].

The readers. I’ve gotten to know you

through my blog, your comments in

stories and your e-mails, and even met

you face-to-face at various shows.

You are what make this magazine

worthwhile. You’ve told me what you

like and don’t like about the magazine,

virtualization in general, the various

vendors and much more. I thank you for your

valuable feedback. I hope I’ve served you

well; you’ve certainly served me well.

TAKE

1

The authors. It’s been a pleasure to work with such a stellar group of writers and technologists over the past several years. A partial list includes: Tom Valovic, Beth Schultz, Chris Wolf, Greg Shields, Nelson Ruest and Danielle Ruest, Scott Lowe, Rick Vanover, Drue Reeves, Reed

Wilson and a host of others that I don’t have space to mention. (I don’t want this to be an Academy Awards acceptance speech.) You folks are simply the best. Thanks for making my job such a pleasure.

TAKE

2

The vendors. I’ve taken hundreds of

briefi ngs over the years and got to know

a number of vendors quite well. It’s my

opinion that innovation is greater in

virtualization than in any other fi eld of

IT, and that’s in large measure due to the

creative folks making great hardware and software to

move this industry forward. Most vendors have been

unfailingly patient in explaining their technology to me

and, in many cases, even allowing me to demo and use

it. Keep pushing that envelope, folks!

TAKE

3

Just everything. Helping produce Virtualization

Review, both in print and online, has been the most fun

I’ve had on the job in my 20 years as a journalist. The

energy of the industry; the cool new products that are,

in many ways, inventions; the merger and acquisition

phase it’s going through; the battle to be “King of the

Hill.” These are the things I’ll miss. I want to thank all of

you for making this the ride of my life. Keep in touch.

TAKE

5

This is my fi nal “Take 5” column for Virtualization Review magazine. I’m moving on to other magazine pastures, and I only hope the grass is as green there as it is here.

I took on the role of founding editor of Virtualization Review a little more than two years ago. It was a somewhat crazy idea, starting a new print magazine in the depressed IT publishing space—especially in an area that had no print magazines in existence. But my bosses had faith in the idea, and their vision has been rewarded. Virtualization Review is going strong, and I’ve left the magazine in the fantastically capable hands of Bruce Hoard, who’s off to a fast start.

There are many things I’ll miss about covering virtualization on a day-to-day basis. Here are the fi ve chart-toppers.

The blogs. When it comes to industry coverage, virtualization—more than most IT arenas—is driven by blogs. The writers do a wonderful job of giving great insights and analyses on what’s happening. While I’ll still be checking in regularly, it won’t be a daily exercise

anymore. Some of the blogs and bloggers I’ll miss most (and this is another woefully incomplete list): Brian Madden (brianmadden.com); Scott Lowe (scottlowe.org); Alessandro Pirilli (virtualization.info); Everyday Virtualization (our own Rick Vanover); Yellow Bricks (Duncan Epping, yellow-bricks.com); and Virtually Speaking (Dan Kusnetzky and Paula Rooney, blogs.zdnet.com/virtualization).

Finally, a consolidated virtualized infrastructure, from the data center to the desktop, is within grasp. Well, not literally of course. After all,it’s virtualized. Start with Windows Server®2008 R2 with built-in Hyper-V™ and you can eliminate costly third-party software like VMware.Add SQL Server®2008 Enterprise, with unlimited virtualization, and you just made it easier to eliminate racks of underutilized servers. Tossin System Center and you’ve centralized management across the enterprise all the way down to the application level. Translation?
