Notes ON THE PROGRAM

It was July 1978. I was five years oldand my parents had taken me to hearthe Philadelphia Orchestra’s outdoorperformance of Tchaikovsky’s Pathe-tique. During the performance, aviolent thunderstorm erupted. The fullforce of the orchestra, punctuated bythunder and lightning, made me feellike I was surrounded by golden pillarsof sound. That was the moment I firstsensed that making music would be adefining element in my life.

In composing Solis, I was brought backto this early formative experience. Thecolors of the orchestra in Solis broughtme back to the golden pillars of soundthat so transfixed me in my childhood. The title Solis refers to the golden sun-like brilliance communicated in thework’s climax. The word solace, whichis derived from the Latin word solis, also has a place in this piece’s emotionallandscape.

Structurally, Solis is a tone poem basedon a poignant opening melody, heardfirst in the solo trumpet against a gentlebackdrop of strings. This melody isthen expanded upon by the rest of theorchestra and is full of shifting orches-tral colors and moods, leading up to apercussive climax in the first half that ispunctuated by the timpani. This pointof arrival paves the way and energeticsecond theme played by the strings andthe clarinet. The rest of the orchestrathen carries this new theme in a short, contrapuntal dance section. Uponreturning to the original melodic mate-rial, the piece gradually builds to atriumphant climax in which the open-ing melody returns in full force, playednow by the entire orchestra. Solis wascommissioned by the University ofNevada Symphony Orchestra led by Dr.Jason Altieri, who also gave the piece itsWest Coast premiere in November of2015.

MAX BRUCH Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26

Max Bruch’s musical skills developedearly: he started composing at age 11,and wrote his first symphony andstring quartet at 12. By the time he was20, he had several students of his own,and for the next two-plus decades heheld a number of posts throughoutGermany as composer, teacher, andconductor. He eventually settled inBerlin where, in 1891, he was appoint-ed professor of composition at theBerlin Hochschule für Musik, a post heretained until his retirement in 1910.Bruch started work on the Violin

Concerto No. 1 in his early twenties. He later wrote, “In my youth I studiedthe violin for four or five years, and, although I did not become an adeptperformer, I learned to know and lovethe instrument. The violin seemed tome even at that time the queen ofinstruments, and it was quite naturalthat I early had the inclination to writefor it.” The concerto was slow to devel-op, and it was only completed in 1866.Even then, however, Bruch wasn’t satis-fied with the results. After the work’spremiere on April 24, 1866, Bruch

One of Stravinsky’s early orchestralworks, Feu d’artifice (Fireworks, 1909)got the attention of Sergei Diaghilev, the great impresario of the BalletRusses, who commissioned the then-lit-tle-known Stravinsky to compose anew ballet on a Russian theme on shortnotice for his company, after othercomposers, including Anatoly Liadovand Nikolai Tcherepnin, had bowedout. The Firebird was premiered inParis on June 25, 1910, conducted byGabriel Pierné and with choreographyby Michel Fokine. It was a major suc-cess, Stravinsky’s breakthrough work, and the first of several legendary col-laborations between Stravinsky andDiaghilev. “Mark him well,” saidDiaghilev at that time, “he is a man onthe eve of celebrity.”Stravinsky’s music for The Firebirdmixes unusual chromatic progressions,to depict the supernatural aspects ofthe story, and simple tunes reminiscentof folk music. Along with the completefifty-minute ballet, Stravinsky createdthree suites for somewhat smallerorchestra in 1911, 1919, and 1945.The 1919 suite has remained the mostpopular.

Drawn from Russian folk tales, thestory of The Firebird centers on PrinceIvan, who, while hunting in the forest –evoked by mysterious low strings at thebeginning of the Suite – wanders intothe realm of the evil magician Kastcheithe Deathless, who has maintainedimmortality by preserving his soul in amagic egg hidden within a casket. Ivancaptures the Firebird, a powerful, posi-tive spirit, depicted by Stravinsky withbright orchestral colors and trills, whose beautiful feathers bring beautyand protection. But he spares theFirebird after she begs for her life. Tothank him, the Firebird gives him afeather with which he can contact herwhen in need.

Suddenly, thirteen princesses who areimprisoned under the spell of Kastcheiappear. As they dance their Khorovod,or Round Dance, Ivan falls in love withone of them. After an argument,Kastchei sends his monster minions afterIvan. Ivan uses his feather to call on theFirebird, who enchants the minions andmakes them and Ivan dance the furious“Infernal Dance” to the point of exhaus-tion. On their falling asleep – accompa-nied by a lovely lullaby, the “Berceuse,”

IGOR STRAVINSKY L’Oiseau de Feu (“The Firebird” 1919 version)

withdrew it, and sent copies of thescore to several people, including therenowned violinist Joseph Joachim, forcomments. Once revised, the Concertowas dedicated to Joachim, who becameone of its great interpreters.

Subtle murmurs introduce theConcerto’s third movement, leadinginto the brilliant gypsy-flavored themeand more expansive second idea thatbecome the material for this combina-tion of sonata and rondo forms. AsJonathan D. Kramer has written, “The

concerto is a mesmerizing display ofviolin virtuosity. Bruch utilizes openstrings, high registers, four-note chords, rapid double and triple stops, etc., withgreat understanding. The resultingwork is a virtuoso’s dream. When wellplayed it shows off the instrument togreat advantage. The piece is also dra-matic, fiery, and melodic, and thus ithas remained popular with soloists andaudiences alike.”

—Chris Morrison

introduced by the bassoon – the Firebirdleads Ivan to a tree stump in which theegg with Kastchei’s soul is hidden. Ivandestroys the egg, and, as the French hornannounces the rising sun, all those that

Kastchei had imprisoned and enchantedare now freed for a final triumphantdance.

This medley of three songs perfectlyreflects the patriotic spirit of thisunique choir. The first song is Keep theHome Fires Burning which was aBritish patriotic First World War songcomposed in 1914 by Ivor Novellowith words by Lena Guilbert Ford. Itbecame very popular in the UK duringthe war, along with It’s a Long Way toTipperary, another favorite in thechoir’s growing repertoire.

Following this opening song, comes thefirst of perhaps the two best knownand loved World War II songs. TheWhite Cliffs of Dover was madefamous by the forces ‘sweetheart’ VeraLynn with her 1942 version, written in1941 by Walter Kent with lyrics by NatBurton. The song was one of Lynn’sbest-known recordings, and soonbecame one of the most popular WorldWar II tunes. It was written beforeAmerica had joined the war to boostthe Allies’ morale at a time when muchof Europe was occupied by the Nazisand Britain was being bombed. Thesong was written about a year after theBattle of Britain where aircraft hadbeen fighting over the cliffs of Dover. The lyrics refer to the RQAF andRCAF fighter pilots in their ‘blue’ uni-

forms as “bluebirds” and expressesconfidence that they shall prevail dur-ing the dark days of the Battle ofBritain.

The final song in this medley is anotherclassic again made famous by Vera Lyn,We’ll Meet Again. It was written in1939 by Ross Parker and HughieCharles. The optimistic message withinthe song resonated with the soldiers, their families and sweethearts alike. The assertion that “we’ll meet again”was the hope everyone needed to feel. The song gave its name to the 1943musical film “We’ll Meet Again” inwhich Dame Vera Lynn played the leadrole (see 1943 in music). More recently,Lynn sang the song in London on the60th Anniversary of VE Day in 2005.

The version performed this evening, isthe one featured on the choir’s secondalbum “Stronger Together” recordedby the Military Wives’ Choir (MWC) –Abingdon and Defence Academy, con-ducted by Gordon Campbell and AnnaVincent-Hill. The album was releasedon November 5, 2012 and reachednumber 5 in the UK charts. Singing thesolo parts in We’ll Meet Again tonightis Beth Joy and Alison Nuttall.

JASON ORANGE, MARK OWEN, GARY BARLOW & HOWARDDONALD, Rule The Worldarr. Jon Cohen & Geoff Lawson

Rule The World is a song by Englishpop band Take That and was their firstsong to be written specifically for afilm. Matthew Vaughn, the director ofStardust, contacted Take That in thehope of getting them to write a song forhis film. After seeing the film, the bandmembers agreed to write (and perform)the song. The band wrote the chorus ofthe song while they were in Spain andupon playing a demo of this to Vaughn, the director agreed to include it in theend credits of the film. Unfortunatelythe song is not included on the Star-dust soundtrack, nor on the originalrelease of the band’s album BeautifulWorld. Instead it was released interna-tionally exclusively as a single inOctober 2007, and was premiered liveby the band at the inaugural National

Movie Awards on September 28, 2007as the year’s 5th biggest-selling single inthe UK, a feat made remarkable by thefact that it was released just twomonths from the end of the year. Thesong was also the 44th best-selling sin-gle in the UK the following year(2008), and the 16th best-selling singlein Ireland in 2007.

The full-length version appears exclu-sively on the Tour Souvenir Edition ofthe album ‘Beautiful World’ and wasthe finale to the ‘Circus Tour’ in 2009.Sam Abrahams conducted the MWC-Lympstone when they recorded thisversion for the choir’s second albumand the soloists in tonight’s perform-ance will be Louise Forbes, Kirsty-annJohnstone and Giselle Fitzsimmons.

LAURENCE MULLEN, DAVID EVANS, ADAM CLAYTON &PAUL DAVID HEWSON With Or Without Youarr. Jon Cohen & Geoff Lawson

With Or Without You is a song by theIrish rock band U2. It is the third trackfrom their fifth studio album, ‘The JoshuaTree’ (1987), and was released as thealbum’s lead single on March 16, 1987.The song was the group’s most successfulsingle at the time, becoming their firstnumber-one hit in both the United Statesand Canada by topping the Billboard Hot100 for three weeks and the RPM nation-al singles chart for one week.

With Or Without You was a collabora-tive effort by all the band’s four mem-bers: Guitarist ‘The Edge’ (DavidEvans), Bassist Adam Clayton,Drummer Laurence (Larry) Mullen andlead vocalist Bono (Paul David

Hewson). The song originated from ademo recorded in late 1985 that thegroup continued to work on throughout‘The Joshua Tree’ sessions. Ostensibly atroubled love song, the song’s lyricswere inspired by Bono’s conflicting feel-ings experienced by juggling life as amusician and domestic man.

Critics praised the song upon itsrelease, and it is frequently performedon the band’s live tours. It has alsoappeared on many of their compilationalbums and concert films. With OrWithout You is U2’s second most fre-quently covered song and in 2010,Rolling Stone magazine placed the songat number 132 on their list of ‘The 500

PAUL MEALOR Wherever You Are

I wrote Wherever You Are for theMilitary Wives Choir under the direc-tion of Gareth Malone to give thewomen ‘a voice’. The lyrics for thesong are written by the Military Wivesthemselves – they are taken from lettersthe wives wrote to their husbands serv-ing in the armed forces. Their storybecame part of a BBC series on televi-sion, ‘The Choir: Military Wives’. Thesuccess of the premiere of the songprompted a recording to be made. TheCD was released on December 19,2011 and entered the UK pop chart at

number 1, claiming the Christmasnumber 1 – selling more than 556,000copies in one week, more than the restof the Top 12 combined. The song alsoclaimed the status of the biggest firstweek sales since A Moment Like Thisby Leona Lewis, and the most success-ful charity single since Elton John’sCandle in the Wind. The song is aboutlove and loss, about hope and friend-ship. It is for all our loved ones, wher-ever they are…

RICHARD MARX Right Here Waitingarr. Jon Cohen & Geoff Lawson

Right Here Waiting is a song by theAmerican singer-songwriter RichardMarx. It was released in June 1989, asthe second single from his secondalbum, ‘Repeat Offender’. The songwas a global hit, topping chartsthroughout the world, including theU.S. where it reached number one onthe Billboard Hot 100 and laterreached Platinum status. Marx wrotethe song as a love letter to his wife, theactress Cynthia Rhodes, who was inSouth African making a film.

The song was Marx’s first of several togo to number one on the Hot AdultContemporary Chart and is his best-selling single to date. It is also his mostenduring, charting in the top 15 ofBillboard’s Hot Adult ContemporaryRecurrent chart for four years running,

from 2000 to 2003, more than tenyears after its release.

In the UK, the song was released inSeptember 1989 and peaked at number2. It is one of Marx’s most frequentlycovered compositions. The originaltrack was arranged by Marx andJeffery Vanston and deliberately omit-ted the use of the heavy drums and syn-thesizers popular at the time. InsteadMarx’s vocal was accompanied only byclassical guitar (Bruce Gaitsch) andkeyboards (Vanston), which is part ofthe reason why the version you aregoing to hear tonight works so well. Itwas arranged for the Military Wives’Choir by Jon Cohen and Geoff Lawsonfor the choir’s second album. Therecording was made by the MWC-Plymouth, conducted by Rob Young.

Greatest Songs of All Time’. RobYoung conducted the MWC-Plymouthwhen they recorded this version for thechoir’s first album, ‘In My Dreams’

released on March 5, 2012. The albumreached number one in the UK chartsand the song is one of the girl’sfavorites to perform at live events.

CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHÖNBERG, ALAIN BOUBLIL & JEAN-MARC NATEL Bring Him Homearr. Mark Brymer

Les Misérables is a sung-through musi-cal based on the novel Les Misérablesby French poet and novelist VictorHugo, but then…you all knew thatdidn’t you? Who hasn’t seen and fallenin love with this extraordinary musi-cal? Having premiered in Paris in 1980,‘Les Mis’ has gone on to become thelongest-running musical in the WestEnd and the second longest-runningmusical in the world.

With music by Claude-MichelSchönberg, original French lyrics byAlain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel, andan English-language libretto by HerbertKretzmer the songs have become house-hold favorites around the globe.

The song the choir is going to performtonight is the hauntingly beautifulBring Him Home in which the charac-ter ‘Valjean’ begs God to save the char-acter ‘Marius’ and return him to‘Cosette’. Taking the lyric “In my needyou have always been there” Valjean isspeaking of how whenever he has been

in need, God has always helped him.An example of this is seen at the startof the musical when Valjean delivershis soliloquy “What Have I Done”.This prayer-like quality of the song isparticularly apparent at the start, butthe mood changes and becomes muchmore passionate and emotionallycharged half way through. The stillnessand calm of the beginning section is re-established towards the end and thesong concludes with a heart wrenchingpleading that leaves the listener almostgasping for breath. It is one of the mostheartfelt and poignant songs of theentire score.

In a Blu-ray documentary of the filmadaptation, Claude-Michel Schönbergrevealed that the song was writtenspecifically for Colm Wilkinson whooriginated the role of Valjean in theWest End. The version the choir per-forms was arranged for SSA voices byMark Brymer and is extremely evoca-tive in its simplicity with solo pianoaccompaniment.

GARETH MALONE & ELIOT KENNEDY Stronger Togetherarr. Jon Cohen & Geoff Lawson

This song was written by Gareth Mal-one and Eliot Kennedy. It was of courseMalone’s TV show ‘The Choir’ that hadbrought the choir to the attention of theBritish public back in 2011. StrongerTogether was written specifically for theladies and the words say it all.

It featured on the choir’s second albumby the same title and was recorded byover 700 ladies from 24 Military WivesChoirs. The original five of Catterick,Chivenor, Plymouth, Portsmouth,Lympstone, were joined by anothernineteen; Abingdon, Ayios Nikolaos(Cyprus), Chicksands, Condor, Cul-drose, Defence Academy, Dishforth,Herford (Germany), JHQ, March-wood, Marham, Middle Wallop,Salisbury Plain, Shawbury, Shorncliffe,Warminster, Wattisham, West of Scot-land and Wimbush. On September 13,over 650 ladies from the 24 choirsrecorded the ‘Stronger Together’ video

in London for release on November 5,2012. Founder member Nicky Clarkewrote on the album cover,

“Stronger Together really does sumup this year (2012) we’ve broughttogether women from all over theMilitary Community, in their ownchoirs, on-line, at the Jubilee andnow on this album and still thechoirs continue to grow. This is atestament to every woman in theMilitary Community – they arestrong, resourceful women whosupport their loved ones whenthey’re away.”

The song begins with a solo, andtonight this part will be sung by theChair of the Plymouth choir, LarraineSmith. Sit back, listen to the words andmusic, and feel the warmth radiatefrom the stage.
