In 2015, we marked OCSAs 20-year anniversary milestone
While we have a solid history and heritage to be proud of, these are incredibly
exciting times. The MMI Holdings acquisition of OCSA puts us in an even stronger
position to support the long-term occupational health risk management of our
many clients, and provide them with a value proposition that speaks to their
specific requirements.
We recently experienced that pivotal moment we’ve been working towards:
OCSA tendered with two members of the Group and were awarded a national
tender with SAPS. While each brand will deliver to its strengths, this achievement
confirms the collective power of the MMI Group. It ticks all the right boxes!

OCSA execs take to the rescue mid-flight Two of our top
executives rolled
up their sleeves mid
-flight, and showed
that they had what
it takes to help a
passenger suffering
from a sudden
epileptic seizure.
CEO Agatha Pretorius and Knowledge, Risk
and Wellness Executive, Reggie Stiglingh,
were flying en route to Joburg on a Kulula
flight from Cape Town when they heard a
commotion in the aisle ahead. Realising
that a passenger required urgent medical
assistance, they immediately set laptops
and documents aside to administer first
aid. “In such a limited space, it was
important to clear and calm the
immediate environment for the passenger
without causing too much fuss and panic,”
said Reggie. Once the situation had
stabilised and everything possible was
being done, there was immense relief from
immediate passengers and assisting crew.
“We are so used to being on the
management end of our business that it
was pure instinct and our medical
backgrounds from decades ago that
moved us into automatic pilot,” said
Agatha. “It felt good to jump in as good
Samaritans, test our skills and know that
we’ve got what it takes!”
The best news of all: the passenger
is fine.

The lifeblood of this business has always been our clients
I’d like to thank every one of our customers for choosing and
retaining OCSA as their provider of choice. Of course, it is more
important than ever to be client centric – particularly in this
economic climate where both long-standing and new clients
have new demands and we need to respond positively. Steel
and manufacturing clients are being impacted by the economy
and it is our job to make sure that we pull hard together with
them.
One of our core capabilities is client engagement and we want
to keep building on this as part of our client-centric approach. In
addition, the OCSA 360MIS system is seen as a huge capability,
and the IP attached to the system is being harnessed.
As we bring 2015 to a close, I would like to say how pleased we
are with the progress we’ve made in the last couple of months.
Thank you to the OCSA team, we are really pulling together as
one and it is always my privilege to work with such a passionate
and committed team across the country.
May you all enjoy the year-end holiday season – and may we all
be blessed with happiness
and peace in 2016.

Passion for the brand, professionalism and
teamwork were the outstanding character
traits that lead to OCSAs Sr Chanel
Lombard being the recipient of a
Performance Ownership Program (POP)
Award. OCSA Regional Manager, Petro de
Wet proudly delivered the news pointing
out that this was the first time ever that
Barloworld Equipment has awarded a POP
Award to an external service provider such
as OCSA. What a great achievement for
Chanel and such a pleasure to
be acknowledged for meeting high levels
of service for our client!
This was the internal nomination from
Barloworld:
Sister Chanel planned a splendid
Wellness Day for Isando which was well
attended.
Employees enjoyed the activities
planned and gained a lot of information
and knowledge from the day.
In her planning, she conducted a study of
issues that our employees on campus are
suffering from, or being challenged with.
She ensured that invited suppliers were
relevant and procured their services for
free.
Sister Chanel doesn’t only focus on the
clinic role, but ensures that employees'
wellness in totality is enjoyed.
She plays a pivotal part of the Isando

AoE update
Into Africa
With training proposals constantly churning and training always on the go, we’ve really seen how we are
geared to making things happen beyond the logistics of training in Africa – and there is a lot involved in
‘just’ the training. Beyond this, we’ve been able to assist clients with requests for new equipment, support
with service and calibration of audiometry and spirometry equipment; we get to mix things up for clients,
customise to their needs and provide a well rounded service into Africa. It’s challenging and exhilarating at
the same time to see how the AoE is developing and fulfilling its vision of being a one stop solution.
Sudan
OCSA ventured into this Northern African
region for the first time - growing our
footprint as we train on the Continent. Jana
Myburgh facilitated a 2-day Spirometry
Refresher Training workshop for a client in
Khartoum.
OCSA sent certificates to the participants,
which were well received:
“On behalf of the participants, I would like
to thank you so much for sending these
certificates. Hanna and I will deliver them
because it means a lot to those who
attended the workshop. Welook forward
to further collaboration with OCSA.”
Rashid Osman, Project Coordinator
Jana on travel
On arrival at Asala Village where I
stayed, I decided to use room service
for a late lunch. I wanted to try the
local Sudanese dishes and I selected
the first on a menu listing 5 “Gulf
dishes” - Tekka Rice. It was a lamb
and rice dish consisting of four side
salads, three types of rice, and pieces
of lamb with a delightful seasoning!
The red, white and mixed rice is tasty
and I was unable to decide which
element I liked best: hummus, baba
ganush (a Levantine dish of cooked
eggplant mixed with onions,
tomatoes, olive oil and seasonings)
tomato or raita – fortunately I did not
have to choose!
I especially appreciated the free wifi
at Hamad International Airport and
the hotel as well as my room’s
extremely effective air conditioner!
Our client was a wonderful host and
the change in culture was an
incredible experience, which
involved real-time translations over 2
days and advice on how to coach in
a culturally appropriate way! Thanks
to Gary Manson, OCSA Liaison Officer
for taking care of all the logistics for
this workshop!
Jana
Angola
The AoE is very pleased to be able to
customise to client requests in cases where
courses fall outside of our usual ‘basket’ of
offerings. It is always good to see the OCSA
promise of “tailor-making” so efficiently being
put into practice. We use our in-house expertise
to simply develop a course and go for it! In
Angola, it was a need for Health & Hygiene
Inspection training. And on the local front, the
other extraordinary course we ran was for a
client in Nigel - Health & Wellness Management
training.
DRC
Repeat business is always a pleasure and
we’ve been holding refresher courses for an
existing client in the region as well as training
their new people.
Kenya
Spirometry training continues for the ESDL
‘European Spriometry Drivers License’ where
medical professionals gather from all over
Africa for this accreditation. OCSAs Lindsay
Zurba is the official ESDL Africa Director and
Training Manager. We have also trained in
Cote d’ Ivoire and Benin in the West, Uganda
and Kenya in the East and Cameroon and
Ethiopia in central and East Africa respectively.
There is also an exciting training collaboration
with DPM Health holdings in Zimbabwe and
OCNAM in Namibia. We are all steam ahead
for 2016 in both countries with training
schedules and co-branded flyers printed and
ready for marketing!

EcoMobility!
October was the month of EcoMobility in the heart of Sandton, where commuters
were encouraged to find alternative ways of travelling into the Gauteng business
district. Between 7.30am and 8.30am every weekday about 95 700 people move
into Sandton and just over 50 000 leave.
With our Head Office located in Rivonia, the festival affected OCSA staff and
visitors. It was an adjustment at first with certain lane closures, but the campaign
was necessary and the start of finding solutions for getting about by foot, bus,
bicycle or scooter!

LEADEREX September - OCSA was one of 200
exhibitors to join Africa's largest
gathering of executives, professionals
and entrepreneurs in Sandton for
Leaderex 2015. With 10 000 visitors
passing through, the event gave great
exposure to OCSA and the chance to
network with business leaders.
We launched into social media when
the marketing team took part in a
“Break Twitter Day” where many of the
Leaderex event and media partners
agreed to send out coordinated tweets
on 4 August. OCSA sent out tweets
every hour throughout the day and had
a good following pre-event. The team
also ran a competition and gave away
mini first aid kits to visitors for retweeting
any OCSA message. Prizes went to
Andra Sonea, Matebesi Khumalo, Solly
Matheba, Donna Moritz, Teyonah Parris,
Nkululeku Ngubene and Nile Rodgers.
Leaderex—bustling with visitors
Executive Managers attended leadership sessions
The OCSA Academy of Excellence is
always proud of its past students and we
enjoyed this story from one of our 2014
Occupational Health Nursing Diploma
graduates – Elsa Opperman.
Elsa has worked for Life OH since 2010 and
after completing her Diploma with AoE,
put her knowledge to the test when she
identified a trend amongst employees.
She noticed that some of the warehouse
workers and cleaners presented severe
upper respiratory tract infections and
general malaise. She found this was
happening far too frequently and
because it was ongoing, she decided to
investigate. During a walkabout of the
warehouse she noticed bats and pigeons
roosting in the premises with evidence of
animal droppings on the floor. Suspecting
that this could be the source of the health
problems, Elsa researched further and
realised that the problem may be
Histoplasmosis. The clinical picture of the
workers presenting with recurrent
infections was consistent with the
symptoms. Three workers tested positive.
While sweeping the droppings on the floor
during housekeeping, they are likely to
have inhaled the spores of the fungus.
Elsa contacted
the National
Institute for
Occupational
Health (NIOH)
and they were
very interested
in the results of
her research
and took the case further.

AoE News Message from Africa
We received a lovely couple of lines from a current
Occupational Health Nursing Diploma student of the
Academy of Excellence (AoE) who is working on contract in
Guinea, West Africa.
“All is well here, the confirmed Ebola
cases are at least 700km from us
now. I am finding what I have
learned on the OCSA course so far
very helpful in my work here. The on-
site senior expatriate management
team has also noticed and
commended you and the
AoE team on what you
are passing on to your
students.”

Lancet Laboratories prides
itself in being a highly
customer-centric environment

services for Lancet. She holds
a BCur Degree in

we feel Lancet is in extremely
good hands! Alongside her is
Fikile who is largely responsible

August - an HIV testing and counselling
day was arranged for Macsteel using
OCSAs preferred partner in the Western
Cape– Touching Nations, who provided a
very informative and interactive workshop.
There was a good level of interest and
participation in discussions from
employees and a stand was set-up to
display information about sexually
transmitted infections.
The real achievement on wellness
days such as these is when
individuals volunteer for counselling
and testing. A total of 21 employees
took that step.
702 Walk the Talk
July - The Rivonia team braved the cold and joined about
50 000 walkers to “walk for a cause” in celebration of 20 years of
democracy at the annual 702 Walk the Talk event held at Marks
Park Sports Club in Emmerentia.
So what did our team have to say?
Thank you once again to the marketing department for such a
team building experience. It was lovely to get to know each
other outside the context of our day-to-day roles.
Sizo NsibandeSoftware Developer
It was real fun and thank you very much to OCSA and the
organisers of the 702 walk. It was a good Sunday.
Anna Molly Ramasehla – Clinic Administrator
What a lovely day we had! Thanks to OCSA Exco for sponsoring
the event for us. We really had so much fun. Let us all do it

Mpumalanga update
What our clients say!
August - We love it when we receive words of thanks
and were thrilled to hear from Safcol and their Primary
Health partner AgriAids – as well as our own clinic staff
on-site. On 4 August 2015, we marked a birthday mile-
stone for Spitskop Clinic.
An OCSA vehicle was handed over to Spitskop clinic staff.
The team was really appreciative of the benefits the wheels
will provide in boosting efficiency during their daily work
at the Clinic.
This wasn’t any old opening – it was a celebration all around when the new
Pep Clinic opened its doors. “We had all waited so long that when the time
came to open the clinic it was a very special occasion,” reports Jacque
Geyser, Client Service Manager at OCSA in the Western Cape.
Cutting the ribbon
The clinic was opened by General Manager,
Marthie Raphael.
The “Wellness + Health + Joy Open Day” was a
fun event to add to the cutting of the ribbon. A
zesty drinks bar added real colour with two very
healthy options on the menu - Rooibos iced tea
with lemon slices or plain water with strawberry
and lemon slices. Refreshing alternatives when
washing down a doubly healthy bran muffin –
no sugar, no butter (this team meant business!)
All the rooms were converted into stations where employees could
complete questionnaires and tests - one of which was to score eating
lifestyles while the social worker team asked employees to rate themselves
sad, mad or glad in a DASS questionnaire. On the primary care side the
motto was “A happy employee is a productive employee”. When it came
to testing, the OT team asked “Do you pack a punch?” and checked hand
grip and lifting strength while the physio team taught employees correct
standing, sitting and bending techniques.
Once the speeches were made there was plenty of praise for the work put
in by the OCSA team. With everyone getting involved and having a part
to play, it was teamwork at its best.
Congratulations to Spitskop and the
team.
Happy first birthday and thank you
team for all your hard work.
A journey well travelled. SAFCOL
Congratulations Spitskop team….Happy, happy,
happy first year!!!
Job well done, continue to allow three behaviours
to lead you:
Dedication, commitment and caring. Agriaids
It’s been a year today since we started Spitskop Clinic,
happy first birthday to the team & its management.
Wishing it many years to come.

June - The chain of events that took place on
what started out as an ordinary winter
morning was linked by good people, great
timing and small miracles.
Security Call Guard, Charles Vundla was on
duty at our client Afrisam in Olifantsfontein
near Kempton Park in Gauteng when he
found a woman had collapsed on the
premises. He ran for help as fast as he could
– it was an act that saved OCSAs very own
Clinic Sister, Elmarie Barnard’s life. She had
taken routine medication during her clinic
hours and the tablet got stuck behind her
vocal cords. This resulted in collapse followed
by a seizure. Charles called Afrisam’s Willem
Hartzenberg and Leticia van den Berg who
immediately started first aid and lifesaving
support. Elmarie was transported to Unitas
Hospital by car where she had immediate
surgery. “If it was not for the quick actions
and support of the Afrisam team, Elmarie
would not have made it alive to the hospital.
Please thank your team for this exceptional
service to saving a life today,” said Leagh
Mitchell, OCSA National Operations
Executive.
Afrisam said they were glad to have been
able to assist and hailed the act of Charles
Vundla who had raised the alarm and was
the key to this happy ending. It just goes to
show how tables can turn so quickly and first
aid knowledge is a powerful and lifesaving
tool. In this case, thank goodness there was
more than one first aid expert in the field!
Oddly enough, Letitia’s e-mail signature has
the following quote: "You can't appreciate
the good days without the bad ones." How
true! We are truly grateful to Afrisam.
A gift of appreciation from OCSA for security guard
Charles Vundla who saved the life of
Sr. Elmarie Barnard.

Corporates going big on in-house gyms
Sunday Times reporter, Farren Collins contacted
OCSA for comment on occupational wellness
and the fact that corporates are ‘spending big
bucks on installing fancy gyms at their offices.’
He wanted to pursue the advantages of
having gyms at work.
“Never mind the communal coffee station and
the annual staff braai, South African corporates
are pulling out the stops to keep their
employees happy and healthy on the job.
In-house gyms - many of them kitted out with
the latest equipment worth millions - are
becoming commonplace at wealthy
companies' offices,” reported Collins. The
merits of maintaining a healthy work-life
balance are all too apparent when it comes
to productivity and efficiency, and the
proximity of a gym at work makes it easier for
corporate employees to relieve stress, keep
fit and enjoy a healthy lifestyle on the go.

Sun City Our people
A Degree for Sister Ruth
She works at OCSAs Sun City Clinic - yet
it’s the stars she’s aiming for! Congratu-
lations to Sr Ruth Tshelane for achieving
her Bacculaureus Technoligiae Nursing
in Occupational Health from Tshwane
University of Technology. This was no
easy task as she had to complete the
degree during her time off, between
shifts and during a very busy work
schedule as OH Nursing Practitioner at
the clinic.
Good heart
Ruth has held her position at Sun City
since 2012 and is a woman of great
spirit and a true asset to OCSA. She
has a gift for caring and volunteers her
time to alleviating poverty. Getting
involved with the community is a way
for her to meet their spiritual and social
needs.
Caring for others is
close to Sr. Ruth’s
heart. Well done on
your Degree!

Why is first aid important?
Think about what could happen if someone
at work suddenly stopped breathing and
nobody knew how to help.
Or, what if the necessary first aid supplies
and equipment weren’t available for a
heavily bleeding employee or someone had
been splashed with a corrosive chemical?
There is no doubt that first aid is an essential
part of any company’s emergency response
system and overall health and safety
program.
Competing in 2015
This year’s regional Industrial First Aid
Competition was arranged by leading first
aid brand St John’s, at Melkbosstrand. OCSA
client, THS Bellville Mill entered two teams of
four members each as well as two individuals.
The great thing about this event is that it
boosts the confidence levels of first aiders in a
practical environment and offers so much
insight and information while having fun,
learning and sharing.
Winning teams!
The winning team walked away with 2nd prize
– a hard earned shield and a first aid kit for
each team member. Well done to:
Nolubabalo, Ronel, Sikhumbuzo, Pamela and
Jehiel.
Individual contestant, Ronel was proudly
placed in the number two position out of four
entrants.
Next year the aim is to bring
back first prize!
YOU CAN DO IT!

The task was simple – make wellness fun!
And so, the team at OCSAs Bellville Clinic
put their heads together to host a
Wellness Day for Barloworld. “We really
wanted to bring the message home that
Barloworld-ers could have fun with
wellness and everyone was issued a
‘passport’,” said OCSAs Celeste Murphy.
Each station had a sticker for the
passport, and those who had a full card
went into the lucky draw where 20 prizes
were given out.
Getting involved
Planet Fitness held popular exercise
sessions that had people smiling as they
replaced their normal work mode with a
muscle toning and shaping regime
instead. There were queues when it
came to donning a pair of special glasses
giving the wearer the effect of drunk
driving while navigating an obstacle
course, and plenty of comedy.
Most people had a go at this and it
was a great way for supplier, Master
Drive to educate employees about
the sobering effects of this issue on our
roads. The ladies enjoyed Annique’s
facials and hand massages, and lucky
draw prizes were awarded and
donated from our friends in the
industry from water bottles and pens
to flavoured condoms. There was
plenty of testing to choose from, and
any abnormalities were
communicated to the OCSA Clinic for
professional follow up.
The day was a great success - 75%
attendance
“The mix of putting together an interesting
event that would encourage people to
take part for free while keeping their
wellness in check was our motivation,”
said Celeste. Thanks to Barloworld for
being such a great partner in arranging
this as well as the suppliers who put so
much energy into the day.

Eight speakers, a motivational talk by well-known radio
psychologist and expert, Dr Helgo Schomer - this was the essence
of SASOHN 2015, held in the Western Cape. The 35th Annual
National Conference and AGM took place from 4 to 6 November
2015 at the Lagoon Beach Hotel.
Three pre-conference workshops were facilitated by experts in the
subjects of audiometry, the ageing worker, and TB in the
occupational health worker. But it wasn’t all work, a full program of
entertainment was lined up:
from the Making Waves cocktail function with its nautical theme;
to the gala dinner and awards evening with its touch of gold.
The attending OCSA team
enjoyed their 3 days and gave very positive
feedback. There were plenty of visitors to the
OCSA exhibition stand, manned by Sary,
Mpho and Jacque who received many
training academy requests. The 360ºMIS
initiative was also a major drawcard and we
had a slide presentation looping throughout
the conference as well as a PC to demonstrate its capabilities.
Wrapping up
A great opportunity to network, a great chance to learn – SASOHN
really lived up to its ‘STAR’ quality!
