The intent this time was to schedule it

Our squadron has some new faces, and we hope to expand the “Shipmate” program. Our squadron Administrative Officer Nancy Chambers is heading up the program that connects a new member to a “shipmate”. That is someone that is the go-to person for the new member, and that is someone that calls the new member reminding them of a function and also saves them a seat so they are sitting with someone they have already met and not overwhelmed by strangers, and also introduces the new member to all the other members. After all, we are family and a new addition to our family is a good thing and we want to make them feel as comfortable and welcome as possible. If you would like to become a “shipmate” person contact Nancy Chambers ([email protected]). As this is written it is just before the USPS National Annual Meeting, held in late February. It always is enlightening to attend and hear, first hand, all that is happening at the National level. Orlando, where the National Annual Meeting takes place, is close enough so the trip there is not over-burdening. It also provides the time and circumstance for visiting with friends in the USPS from all over the country, and from numerous other squadrons. By the way, if you have ideas about speakers you would like to hear at our monthly Membership Meetings, please pass those along. Your input is always welcome! Boating subjects, other subjects, whatever you feel would be of interest to you and the membership as a whole. I am reminded that many members who own boats have not availed themselves of a Vessel Safety Check (VSC) for their boat. We have many certified inspectors and all would be more than willing to perform the check of all your boat’s safety equipment. Your boat can be in the water, on a trailer or on a rack, it does not matter. It is a non-punitive event. If something is found to not pass (i.e., outdated flares), you replace the item(s) with ones that will pass. Our inspectors will return and when all is found satisfactory then the current annual VSC sticker is issued. The VSC takes about 45 minutes. Contact P/C Ron Terciak ([email protected]) to schedule a VSC for your boat. Continued in next column →

There is a plan in the beginning stages for a C&R which would be an overnight cruise to Lake “O”. Tentatively, it is being planned for April 18-20, 2019. Save the dates. On Thursday, we would cruise to Clewiston, either stay overnight in our boat or in a hotel room, have dinner and cocktails, and enjoy our camaraderie. On Friday, we would cruise across Lake “O”, go into Stuart Florida (or somewhere along the river there) and stop for lunch, then cruise out into the Atlantic Ocean (just to say we did). Then we would head back to Clewiston, arriving for dinner and the Friday night entertainment there. On Saturday morning we would head out, returning home. We are going to again invite members of our sister squadron, the Fort Myers Power Squadron, to join us if they wish. I hope you have stepped forward and volunteered to “work” a two-hour shift in the Bonita Springs Boat Show. We share the responsibility for staffing a USPS Booth with the other area squadrons. It is a good show with lots of people attending and many sign up for the education courses we offer as well as sign up for membership in the squadron. Time devoted to this goes toward a merit mark for the individuals. Last month I mentioned there were meetings amongst the leaders of the four quad squads regarding finding ways to assist members of the local Coast Guard during the Federal Government shut-down. Just a day before we were going to implement the plan that had been pulled together the shutdown ended. Our manifest includes doing civic duties and helping others. 1) C&R is on March 12 going to Woody's on Pine Island 2) March is yard sale month - save your junk! 3) Our membership meeting is on March 26 4) There are children's life jackets available at the office

Where go the Boats R.L. Stevenson Dark brown is the river Golden is the sand It flows along forever With trees on either hand Green leaves a floating Castles of the foam Boats of mine a-boating Where will all come home On goes the river And out past the mill Away down the valley Away down the hill Away down the river A hundred miles or more Other little children Shall bring my boat ashore I remembered this poem recently when my sister sent me a picture from her trip on the Mekong River. The Mekong was muddy brown in the picture. That got me thinking about water and how far it travels and how far we can travel on it. There are boats of all different sizes and designs floating all around the world. Locally, there has been blue green algae floating down the Caloosahatchee instead of boats. Although USPS is not a conservation or environmental organization SCBSPS needs to stay concerned and participate in solving this problem. We cannot promote safe boating if the water around us is unusable and the air not breathable. Continued top of next column →

No one can be on the water in those conditions. Let's work as a group to help in any way we can to solve the water crisis. This in turn will allow us to continue to promote safe boating and enjoy our boating activities. ■

We were about to do that in a big way. Fortunately, the opening of the government happened and the members of the Coast Guard had relief from the nightmare they were living. Don’t forget there are Squadron Directories available (at $2.00 each) that are quite helpful in contacting Bridge Officers and other members of our squadron, by phone or email. They will be available at our C&R’s and Membership Meetings. Be Safe! Be Active! --Bill Behrens Commander ■

From the Exec Officer Lt/C Charlie Richardson, JN.

By the time you read this the Bonita Springs Boat Show will be underway. We are sharing a booth with the Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Naples Squadrons. Boat Shows provide a great opportunity to talk with local boaters. We are able to give them valuable information while inviting them to participate in our classes. Our publicity is starting to kick in. We are getting record registrations for our Local Waters class and attendance at ABC is improving. Thanks, Ron, for getting the message out. If you have not had your boat inspected this year, we have inspectors waiting. The 2019 decals are here. Call the office or Click on the VSC form on our Website to schedule an inspection. Getting a VSC is a good way to avoid problems or embarrassment while on the water. Having a sticker on your boat will not guarantee that you will not be boarded but it will definitely improve your chances of not being boarded. Having a VSC is sure to give you peace of mind knowing that everything is A OK. Safe Boating Weed is in May, that may seem like a long way off but start thinking about where you can put posters. Condos, Clubhouses, Marine Stores, Tackle shops and Marinas. I will have posters by the end of April. Keep talking up our classes, Charlie ■

Our public programs are rolling on. Nine people completed ABC in February (photo), and we have an overflow class for Local Waters. If you'd like to help out with Local Waters in March (March 23) extra hands are always welcome. As for the advanced courses, Doy McPhail finished teaching the first edition of the new Boat Handling course and Piloting starts March 2. ■

From the S.E.O. Lt/C Melissa Butler, AP

It is VESSEL SAFETY CHECK time again. The VSC is an annual event, and it allows those that avail themselves of the free safety check to be assured they have all the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel. It also ensures items that have an expiration date are not expired and are valid, such as their fire extinguishers and flares. This squadron service is, or course, available to all members of our squadron and is available to the public as well, such as your friends and neighbors. If one’s boat does not pass, there is no punitive action taken, and it is not reported to any agency. Once the item(s) that needed attention is corrected we will re-visit and re-do the VSC and, when one’s boat passes, issue the current year safety sticker. Contact P/C Ron Terciak to schedule your VSC. ■

Amazon Smile

Hello Everyone, the retailer, AMAZON, has a method by which they contribute to charitable organizations for any and all purchases you make with them.

Our squadron is an official charitable organization and if you take a few minutes and set this up Amazon will contribute .5% of the purchase price to our squadron.

They tie your setup to your login name and password. For the initial setup, and afterwards each time you login to Amazon. use the following: www.Smile.Amazon.com

Basically, you login to www.smile.amazon.com, follow the prompts to select your charitable organization (select San Carlos Bat Sail & Power Squadron) and when finished it will be completed and will apply each time you login to www.Smile.Amazon.com.

Near the top of your screen, when logged into Amazon, you will see a notation “Supporting: United States Power Squadrons”. If you click on it you will see Fort Myers Beach under United States Power Squadron (which designates our squadron receives the donations). Our treasurer is registered with Amazon on behalf of our squadron.

Also, please share this information with friends and relatives. If they do the same thing by selecting our squadron and logging into the “smile. Amazon” address this could be a meaningful source for some “extra” income for the squadron. Thank you, Bill Behrens

Help us beat last year’s record numbers by having your boat inspected by one of our inspectors. Email or call me and I will have an inspector come to your location.

SAVE THE DATE:

We are planning a trip to lake O in April. Tentative plans are to leave April 18 and return on the 20th. This is a Thursday, Friday, Saturday. On Friday we would like to cross the lake and go to Stuart for lunch, then if time permits go out into the Atlantic to say we did it. This will take a lot of planning. if you are interested please email me ASAP. Reservations have to be made for slips, rooms and dinners. Please let me know if you will be a live aboard or will require a room. ■

Our Public Classes

We offer several classes to increase boater knowledge and skills. These classes are open to the public (membership is not required). The classes are presented as a public service by the Squadron and are

taught by experienced Squadron members America’s Boating Course 3rd Edition ® Is our basic boating class. The class will cover the basics of boat handling, PWCs, required equipment, navigation aids and rules, and dealing with emergencies. It will provide instruction and examination for laws and regulations of the State of Florida. The course is a total of 8 hours spread over two days. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "America's Boating Course 3rd Edition".

Local Waters – Local Charts Is our course for boaters in the Ft. Myers area. The Local Waters class is directed toward new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those who wish to learn chart reading. Using Chart 11427, boaters will learn some of the basics of navigation in the Fort Myers Area. Students would bring their own copies of the chart. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "Local Waters - Local Chart". Using GPS GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However, using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This 2-3-hour seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to use the buttons on your GPS and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Using VHF & VHF DSC Marine Radios This class is essential for those with a 'new' radio or those planning to buy a new radio. DSC is operational in Fort Myers. You need to register your radio and learn how it's different. We also cover standard VHF operations. Read a detailed description of the course. Paddle Smart This seminar is intended for those interested in Paddle sports or are considering the purchase of a Kayak, Canoe or other Paddle sport equipment. Read a detailed description of this course by clicking on "Paddle Smart". Hurricanes & Boats This is a mini-seminar. It covers how to select a location and prepare your boat for a hurricane.
