At the time this column is being written, the newly formed squadron Finance Committee is scheduled to meet before the end of the month. The committee, by design and purpose, is to offer guidance and assistance to our Treasurer Ken Morris and Assistant Treasurer Steve Mortonson, and at the upcoming meeting the basics will be defined and a course plotted so as to accomplish the basic goals. More on this next month.

We are still planning to have our April C&R to Lake “O” (Clewiston). The original concept was to travel to Clewiston (Roland and Martin Marina) on Thursday, then on Friday go across Lake “O”, have lunch and return to Clewiston. Well, that is not possible given the distances and travel times involved. But the trip to Clewiston is going to be fun and we can “dip our hulls” in Lake “O” and return to the marina in time for more fellowship, entertainment with a live group and dinner. The overall trip also offers us a substantial boat ride and lots of camaraderie amongst our members that participate, as well as with members from our sister squadron, Fort Myers, who have again been invited to join us. By the way, the condo units at Fisherman’s Village are still (!) closed. They have been involved in litigation since the hurricane Irma, during which many sustained damages. The good news is they are currently being renovated and projected to be open near the end of this year or next year at the latest. It is a very good destination for an over Night C&R, and we should keep this in mind for 2020. Don’t forget there are Squadron Directories available (at $2.00 each) that are quite helpful in contacting Bridge Officers and other members of our squadron, by phone or email. They will be available at our C&R’s and Membership Meetings. Continued next column →

The District 22 Spring Conference and District Change-of-Watch is coming up on Saturday, April 13, 2019 in Punta Gorda at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center. There are several things scheduled during the day including:

· round tables during the day Saturday from 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., covering a variety of subjects including a “Town Hall” open forum with the District Commander, the past Chief Commander and others,

· display tables, · an Awards Luncheon (pre-registration

necessary), · the District Conference, and · the District Change-of-Watch, followed

by dinner (pre-registration necessary). It is about one hour away, easy to get to and offers a whole lot of information. Additionally, we (our squadron) are entitled to delegates who participate in the matters needing a vote during the afternoon Conference. If you can get away for a Saturday, and become a participant in the Conference, please pre-register (if you can attend one or both of the events requiring pre-registration) and let me know ([email protected]) so I can list you as one of our squadron’s delegates. It is definitely worthwhile to spend the day and learn a whole lot about the District and the overall Power Squadron’s operations and benefits. A very B I G THANK YOU to those members of our squadron that stepped forward and helped staff the Power Squadron booth at the Bonita Springs Boat Show. It is VERY appreciated. From the Administrative Officer Lt/C Nancy Chambers, S.

Updates 1 The C&R will be April 9 to the Green Flash 2 The membership meeting is on the April 26 3 our website is www.scbps.com

We're Growing This season the squadron has had many

new members join us. Hopefully all will continue to participate in our activities and stay with the squadron long term. In order to encourage them we have implemented the shipmate program. This involves a longstanding member contacting a new member to see if they have any questions, are getting the squadron emails, would like to attend a C&R or membership meeting, etc. The old and new members will become "shipmates". Hopefully new friendships will be made and our new members will soon feel like an integral part of the squadron.

I'd like to thank Brenda Battles, Hermann

Kuehnel, Jeanne Shaw, Marie Ragone, and Jane Aube for helping to get this program off the ground. They all make excellent "shipmates". If anyone else is interested in helping out let me know.

Welcome new members! ■

Our Executive Officer (Past Commander) Charlie Richardson truly did a marvelous job in coordinating the volunteers for the various shifts (we ended up having to cover a day and a half) as well as bringing a fresh look to our booth with new ideas for decorating. Thank you Charlie! Have you read through the monthly publication “The Tidings”? All the way through? Our esteemed award-winning editor, Past Commander John Ragone, constantly outdoes himself with each issue! Amazing job, John! Thank you! By the way, if you patronize one of our advertiser’s business, please take a minute and let them know you are with the San Carlos Bay Sail & Power Squadron and you saw their advertisement in the squadron’s monthly publication “The Tidings”. From the Exec Officer Lt/C Charlie Richardson, JN.

We had a nice booth at the Bonita Springs Boat Show. Thanks to all who helped with setup and take down; Commander Bill, Bob and Jean Shaw, Hermann Kuhnel, Mike and Jane Aube, Dick Battles, Mike and Jean Wilkie and Dave and Ann Lum. We probably should make some changes before the Fall Show in Fort Myers. Several suggestions were brought forward by the Cape Coral Squadron. Vessel Safety Checks are proceeding well. We are ahead of last year. Make sure your boat is checked. So far, we have inspected more nonmembers boats than our own. Shouldn’t we set the example? My next project will be “Safe Boating Week” I plan to have posters available for distribution in early May. That’s all for now. Charlie ■

VESSEL SAFETY CHECK Lt. Steve Mortonson, P

VESSEL SAFETY CHECK

“Have you ever been boarded by the Coast Guard?” the captain of the gray and orange United States Coast Guard vessel asks as they pull alongside us. After a fun day of fishing with my wife and another couple this is not what I want to hear! We had had a great day offshore and were headed home. After rounding Bowditch and passing Pink Shell Marina, I notice the Coast Guard vessel with a boat next to it, ahead of us, and near the Matanzas Pass Bridge. I make sure we are at the slowest ‘Idle’ possible, move way to starboard hugging the docks on the bay, and continue toward it. Continued on page 7 top of column 1

Quad Squad:

Sanibel-Captiva has an educational cruise scheduled for April 2 and know that we are going to have space for more members/students. It is designed for ABC3 and Seamanship (Boat Handling) students, but open to all members who would like the experience. (see attached flyer)

The boat does a loop near sunset when you can see markers, etc. and then retraces itself as it gets dark so that you can see how things look at night.

It is well worth the $25 fee. Let me know if you have questions, but feel free for your members to make direct reservations.

Thanks,

Steve Abbott

It is VESSEL SAFETY CHECK time again. The VSC is an annual event, and it allows those that avail themselves of the free safety check to be assured they have all the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel. It also ensures items that have an expiration date are not expired and are valid, such as their fire extinguishers and flares. This squadron service is, or course, available to all members of our squadron and is available to the public as well, such as your friends and neighbors. If one’s boat does not pass, there is no punitive action taken, and it is not reported to any agency. Once the item(s) that needed attention is corrected we will re-visit and re-do the VSC and, when one’s boat passes, issue the current year safety sticker. Contact P/C Ron Terciak to schedule your VSC. ■

VESSEL SAFETY CHECK Lt. Steve Mortonson, P

Continued from page 5 bottom of column 1

A few minutes later the boat they had stopped pulls away from them and several other boats pass unimpeded. As we get close, they turn toward us.

“Have you ever been boarded by the Coast Guard?” That was the first thing the Coast Guard captain called out as he and his crew of three approach our boat in their ‘unsinkable’.

“Not yet”, I replied. “You will be now”. “Oh joy” is my thought, but decide it is best

to remain silent. They pull up alongside us and as the captain

starts to climb aboard, even before he is fully on our boat, he says “Don’t reach - Just point. Do you have a weapon onboard? DON’T’ REACH - JUST POINT.” Continued on page 8 column 1

As the captain and his three crew members intensely watch all of us onboard, believe me, I just point and reply, “We do” and promptly follow his instructions to “Step away” from where it is located. The captain and one crew member come onboard while two others remain on their vessel. They assess the situation, cautiously examining the four of us on our boat. Apparently, we don’t pose a threat and he signals for their boat to move slightly away from us.

As expected, “License and registration” are his next commands.

Handing him my driver’s license, I open the dry box where we keep boat documents, and hand him the white piece of paper I keep in there.

The captain examines my driver’s license, compares it to the white piece of paper, and is not happy. Continued in next column →

He shakes his head and says, “This isn’t going to work”.

While I wasn’t totally relaxed before, now I am really nervous. Hands shaking somewhat, heart racing, feeling really uncomfortable.

Handing the white piece of paper back to me and still shaking his head he says, “This is your fishing license. Do you have your registration?”

The other white piece of paper in the dry box satisfies him.

It went well after that. They look at our flares and fire extinguishers, check the expiration dates, confirm one PFD per person onboard, listen to the horn, and look at the MARPOL Garbage Disposal sticker.

To my dear San Carlos Bay family I want to bring you up to date on my health. I have been feeling much better lately. My appetite has improved and I have begun to gain some weight. On my visit with my oncologist two weeks ago, after viewing the results of a scan, said that I have no new cancer growths an my tumors have begun to shrink. On my visit with him on the 12th (the reason I missed our C&R) he said that my cancer marker, a number made from the many items on my blood tests, said my number has dropped by 500 in January to 218 on the 12th I am not out of the woods by any means but at least I am cautiously optimistic. I again I cannot express my appreciation for your help, support and prayers. Ron Terciak ■

Then, he asks, “Do you have a head?” “Yes, we do” I answer, “and the

discharge valve is in the off position and zip tied in place.”

The captain smiles and doesn’t even look at it.

“For some reason,” says the captain, “they’ve decided I’m responsible for enforcing fishing regulations.” While he doesn’t ask for our fishing licenses, though he’d already unintentionally seen mine, he did query, “Did you catch and keep any fish?”

“Yes” “Where are they?” I point to the fish locker, open it, and he

peers in to our pitiful bounty of one Black Margate and one Lane Snapper, both on ice.

“What are they?” and I tell him. Continued in next column →

He opens the Fish Rules app on his phone, checks season and size/weight limits and says, “Good to go.”

Next, he says, “You have a weapon onboard. Do you have a concealed weapons permit?”

“Yes, we do. Do I need one?” “No - just curious.” He’s now finished with us. He leaves our

bow area and passes by the port side of the windshield, stops, and sees our prominently displayed, CURRENT, bright orange, blue and white Vessel Safety Check sticker and says, “Sorry - I didn’t see this!”

“Well I intentionally put you on my port side as I passed”, which got the three coast guard crew members smiling.

The captain gives a shrug and says, “This

would have gone faster if I had seen this”! He climbs back onto his boat and pulls away with a smile and a friendly wave. Leaving us, they turn to port and head across the bay to their station. As luck would have it, we were the last inspection of their shift.

It was still a great day on the water. We just have another entry into our growing list of interesting/exciting/terrifying/learning/confusing boating experiences in SWFL!

Our Public Classes

We offer several classes to increase boater knowledge and skills. These classes are open to the public (membership is not required). The classes are presented as a public service by the Squadron and are

taught by experienced Squadron members America’s Boating Course 3rd Edition ® Is our basic boating class. The class will cover the basics of boat handling, PWCs, required equipment, navigation aids and rules, and dealing with emergencies. It will provide instruction and examination for laws and regulations of the State of Florida. The course is a total of 8 hours spread over two days. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "America's Boating Course 3rd Edition".

Local Waters – Local Charts Is our course for boaters in the Ft. Myers area. The Local Waters class is directed toward new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those who wish to learn chart reading. Using Chart 11427, boaters will learn some of the basics of navigation in the Fort Myers Area. Students would bring their own copies of the chart. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "Local Waters - Local Chart". Using GPS GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However, using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This 2-3-hour seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to use the buttons on your GPS and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Using VHF & VHF DSC Marine Radios This class is essential for those with a 'new' radio or those planning to buy a new radio. DSC is operational in Fort Myers. You need to register your radio and learn how it's different. We also cover standard VHF operations. Read a detailed description of the course. Paddle Smart This seminar is intended for those interested in Paddle sports or are considering the purchase of a Kayak, Canoe or other Paddle sport equipment. Read a detailed description of this course by clicking on "Paddle Smart". Hurricanes & Boats This is a mini-seminar. It covers how to select a location and prepare your boat for a hurricane.
