Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior

Jonah 3:1-5, 10

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying,

"Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the

message that I tell you." So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh,

according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an

exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began

to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, "Forty

days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!" And the people

of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and

everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw

what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God

changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would

bring upon them; and he did not do it.

6 For God alone my soul in silence waits;

truly, my hope is in him.

7 He alone is my rock and my salvation,

I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown

short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as

though they had none, and those who mourn as though they

were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were

not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no

possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they

had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is

passing away.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee,

proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is

fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and

believe in the good news." As Jesus passed along the Sea of

Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net

into the sea-- for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them,

"Follow me and I will make you fish for people." And

immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a

little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother

John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he

called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with

the hired men, and followed him.

to receive both bread and wine, sharing in the common cup. Please

assist the chalice bearer by guiding the cup to your lips. You may also

intinct by dipping the wafer into the chalice. During this time when

infectious diseases are a serious concern, you may wish to receive

the bread only. Receiving the bread only is a valid and acceptable way

to share in Holy Communion. After consuming the wafer, simply cross

your arms over your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive

the wine. Gluten-free wafers are available on request from the

communion minister.

If you are feeling sick, please refrain from receiving the wine and

be mindful of those near you when passing the peace or shaking

hands as you enter and exit the church.

NEW YEAR, NEW CHALLENGES, NEW OPPORTUNITIES

He who was sitting on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.

(Revelation 21:5)

2017 is now behind us. We may remember it for many happy occasions, for

unexpected blessings, or for financial or career successes. Or we may look at

2017 as a year which we would rather forget, because of failures, personal losses,

opportunities denied or other reasons. But 2018 is a new year! As Christians, we

are a people of optimism and hope. We know that although we do not know what

lies ahead in the future, we do know that God will be there for us, and that we can

count on Him to guide us and help us in whatever situation we find ourselves in.

He will indeed make all things new for us. Remember also, that St. Johns will

be there for you, as well!

ST. JOHNS NEW ONLINE PAYMENT PROCESS

In order to make online payments to St. Johns easier, we have instituted

a new, streamlined process. Payments for pledges and other types of

donations can now be set up with an online payment profile at

https://www.shelbygiving.com/stjohnsdc by using your email address

and creating a password. The password should contain a combination of

at least eight numbers and letters. Payment can be made through VISA,

MasterCard, Discover, and American Express cards as well as debit cards

and echecks or ACH direct debits from your account. Just select your

preferred method of payment from the drop-down list. Select the fund to

which you wish to make a payment. A one-time payment can be executed

this way, or automatic recurring payments can be arranged by following

the instructions for scheduled payments. The site also keeps track of your

payments. We encourage you to use this method of making payments and

to let our financial secretary, Preston Cherouny, know that you will switch

to online payments at a certain date.

Payments can now also be made by texting to 202-335-0365. You will

receive prompts on your device screen for completing the process.

Please remember that this is a payment process, and St. Johns still wants

to receive your pledge. Pledging can be done online at our website. By

making a pledge, parishioners are not only making a financial

commitment to contribute a certain amount to St. Johns, but they are also

providing vital information to our Clergy and Vestry needed to plan the

budget.

RECTOR TRANSITION AND SEARCH PROCESS

Today, January 21, at 10:00 a.m., the Rev. Canon Paula Clark of the

Diocese of Washington will join us for a discussion of the Rector

transition and search process. Canon Clark works with parishes in

transition on all aspects of the process and will be here to help explain the

process and answer questions. We hope you will join this important and

informative discussion.

PROGRESS ON THE PARISH HOUSE RENOVATION

Monarc construction began renovation on January 2. Demolition of

the interior and exterior began the week of January 15. Windows

have been removed for repair, followed by the demolition of the

outside fire escape and the excavation for footings and a lower level

exit for the new stair tower. This excavation and construction should

take about six weeks. Erection of the scaffolding for repairs of the

building exterior will take place in February.

With the exception of the accessible restroom in the connector, the

Parish House is now closed for St. Johns use. Portable, heated

restrooms with running water are now in place on the sidewalk in

front of the Parish House for the exclusive use of our congregation

during services and other events. Choir practice, Sunday School,

Nursery, and Coffee after the 11:00 a.m. Service are now located at

the Hay-Adams Room across from the front door in the Hay-Adams

ADULT FORUM SCHEDULE

The Forum is held at 10:00 a.m. on the following Sundays:

REFUGEE SUPPORT PROJECTS

The St. John's Refugee Project will meet today, January 21 after the 11:00

a.m. service in the community room of 910 15th Street NW. The goal of the

January meeting will be the determination of a clear path ahead for year two of

the project, should interest remain in continuing forward.

A few upcoming refugee related events:

Monday, January 22-Friday, January 26 at 12:00 noon.: The Asylum

Seeker Assistance Project (ASAP) is actively recruiting volunteers to assist

with upcoming job readiness training. The goal of this training is to orient and

prepare professional asylum seekers for employment in the U.S. It will take

place from Monday, January 22 Friday, Jan 26 at ASAPs office located in

NW DC near the Tenleytown Metro Station. Volunteers are encouraged to

come at 12 noon to join us for lunch and to co-facilitate afternoon breakout

sessions. Specific instructions will be provided to volunteers on site. Please

Wednesday, January 31, 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.: Film Screening -Two short

films (From Damascus to Chicago and 4.1 Miles) that portray the challenges of

the one percent of refugees who journey to and are resettled in another country,

followed by a panel discussion moderated by Anne Richard, former Assistant

Secretary of Population, Refugees and Migration at the U.S. Department of

State. Georgetown University - Edward B. Bunn, S.J. Intercultural Center at

concert. Bamburia was recently founded by St. Johns Choir bass-baritone Chris

Ensemble to perform English composer Bob Chilcotts Little Jazz Mass in the

Be Thou My Vision and Will Todds poetic setting of Amazing Grace. Do join us

for our annual jazz service on the last Sunday of Epiphany.

THE 2018 SPRING ADULT INQUIRERS CLASS Saturdays, March 17 and March 24

8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you would like to be baptized, confirmed, or received into membership in the

Episcopal Church at St. Johns, join the 2018 Spring Adult Inquirers Class. Led

by the Rev. Andy Olivo, the class (a two-day session) will meet on Saturdays,

Friday-Sunday, March 9-11, 2018

We are excited to announce the official opening of registration for this

years womens retreat. We are fortunate to have Rev. Susan Thon lead

us. She was recommended by a number of people and comes to us as the

former rector of The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Bethesda. We

are exploring a combination of author, Judith Duerks work (in particular,

The Circle of Stones) along with inspiration from Rev. Thon. The cost

to attend will be $275 for lodging and all meals. Checks should be

payable to St. Johns and sent to the churchs mailing address. We

would love to have some new attendees so please dont be shy

The deadline to attend is February 28. We will be looking for a

ST. JOHNS COMMUNITY BUILDING POTLUCK EVENTS

Renovation of the Parish House will begin soon, and with it the loss of meeting

space and venue for our Sunday Parish Lunches and other parish life events. To

continue and expand on our fellowship opportunities, we are organizing activities

by neighborhood and/or zip code. These events will be potluck suppers, brunches,

and cocktail parties in the homes of parishioners, or happy hours at local

establishments, picnics, or whatever our creativity leads to. If you are interested

in participating by hosting or organizing an event, please contact Holly

Sukenik at [email protected]. Please watch this space for announcements

of other events as they are confirmed.

CONSIDER JOINING THE FLOWER GUILD

Whether acquiring a new skill or expanding on an existing talent, being a member

of the Flower Guild is a rewarding way to volunteer at St. Johns. Newcomers

are paired with experienced members who mentor them until they are fully

fledged, confident flower arrangers. It is a wonderful ministry with the benefit of

newfound friendships. For a typical Sunday, two team members meet on Saturday

morning. Please contact Flower Guild Chair Katherine Kyle if you would like

SING WITH THE PARISH CHOIR

The Parish Choir of St. Johns, a dedicated corps of volunteer musicians who

provide musical leadership for the 9:00 a.m. Eucharist each Sunday morning,

welcomes new members. Midweek rehearsals are most Thursday evenings from

7:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m., with a light supper of sandwiches provided at 6:30

p.m. There is a straightforward voice trial for admission, but the main

qualification is your interest in serving St. Johns in its music program. The

Parish Choir uses the Rule of St. Benedict as a guide for serving together in a

community of faith. Additionally, the singing season is divided into Quarters,

which are focused commitments of eight to ten weeks. If you would like to join

for the "Winter Quarter," please be in touch with Director of Music Michael

Lodico at [email protected] to learn more.

PASTORAL CARE AT ST. JOHNS CHURCH

Praying for the sick and those in need is an important part of our life together. We

invite you to add yourself, family, or friends to the parish prayer list. Other than

birthdays, anniversaries, and deaths, names added to the prayer list will appear for

four consecutive weeks. If you would like the name to be on the prayer list for a

shorter or longer period of time, please let us know. We are listing in parentheses

The Washington National Cathedral

Featuring Howard University's premier vocal group Afro Blue and

Atlanta-based priest and social activist, the Rev. Kim Jackson. The event

is at the Washington National Cathedral, Friday, January 26, from 7:00

p.m. 9:00 p.m. A light dinner will be included with the ticket price.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Please come and bring

your friends! Anyone with a student ID will be admitted at no charge.

ST. JOHNS NURSERY AND CHURCH SCHOOL

St. Johns Nursery and Church School will undergo several changes

during the renovation of the Parish House, which began on January

2. We will continue to keep your children safe, teach them the great

stories of the Hebrew scriptures and the gospel stories of Jesus, and

involve them in worship.

The Nursery and Church School class will be held in the Hay-

Adams Room (across from the front door of the hotel, behind the

elevators) on the first floor of the Hay-Adams. The Nursery, for

children under age three, will be open from 8:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Our one-room, multiage class for students age three to those in fifth

grade will meet at 10:45 a.m. Church School students will join their

families for communion at the exchange of the Peace.

The Hay-Adams Hotel is located on the corner of 16th and H Streets,

directly across from the entrance of the church. Space for the

Nursery and Church School might not be available every Sunday.

Please watch Sunday announcements and the weekly email

newsletter for updates. We will make every effort to notify you on

a timely basis.

Students in grades six through 12 are encouraged to attend a worship

service with their parents. This will not only give children a chance

to experience the full and rich liturgy of the Episcopal Church, but

also give them a chance to use their gifts in ministry during the

service. High school students are invited to take part in the service

by acolyting, ushering, reading, and serving as chalice bearers.

Middle school students (grades six to eight) will serve as acolytes

with expanded duties.

Eucharist. Parents may decide if their children receive the bread and/or
