Father Peter writes :

Recently the Parish hosted a meeting of priests who were

from the local Chapter of the Society of the Holy Cross. The

talk given at the meeting was entitled ‘Christians in Iraq’ and

was given by a lady who was a nurse who had made a number

of extended visits to that embattled country.

She spoke in a vivid and compelling way detailing her

experiences which were at times gruesome and difficult to

receive; outlining the treatment metered out to Christian men,

women and children at the hands of I.S.I.L.

Imagine having your home daubed with a Cross or a big ‘C’

for Christian knowing that your home was about to be

targeted and taken. This is what happened in Mosul (a city

you’ve probably heard of from the news). A City which had

ten years ago up to 60,000 Christians living there now has

none – they have had to flee, after being told by I.S.I.L. to

convert or face the sword.

At the talk the nu5rse told a story of a priest, Father John,

who wore no clerical shirt and neither did he carry a stole (a

badge of his office). He ministered faithfully under the most

harrowing of conditions to a group of displaced Christians in

the mountains of Northern Iraq. After her first visit he chose

to send to her in the U.K. the only Christian symbol he

possessed: a small cross with a request to pray for the

Christians of Iraq. To him the small Cross became a symbol

of hope for the persecuted Christians there who are isolated

and feel ignored by the people of the world.

We live our Christian lives in comparative comfort and ease,

no threat to life, we can practise our faith without hindrance

or not if we become complacent. I ask you all to embrace

Iraqi Christians in your daily prayers. You will see elsewhere

in this magazine details of a Prayer Vigil Programme being

held in Middleborough.

This year we shall be supporting a charity AID FOR THE

CHURCH IN NEED at our Harvest this truly is FAITH IN

ACTION. I urge you to be as generous as you are able that

our offerings may reflect the very many blessings we receive

daily from God.

FAITH AND ACTION is what the Christians of Iraq

desperately need from us all at this time.

May Almighty God encourage us all to lead compassionate

lives.

God of Compassion, Hear the cries of the people of Iraq.

Comfort those who suffer violence, console those who mourn

the dead, convert the hearts of those who have taken up arms

and protect those who are committed to peace. Inflame us

your people with compassion for the people of Iraq and give

us hope for a future built on justice for all. We ask this

through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. Amen.

MOTHERS UNION

JULY 24TH

. As this would be our last meeting before our month of

August break a combined service of members from both All Saints and

St John’s was held in All Saints Church at 2pm. We were a bit sparse in

numbers due to holiday etc., but this did not hamper our proceedings in

any way.

Alma welcomed us all in her usual warm friendly way and then led us

into our special Mothers Union Service of hymns and prayers as used by

all our members worldwide. For our Bible reading this was from Psalm

22 which is almost in wording to the renowned and greatly loved Psalm

23, ‘The Lord is My Shepherd, I shall not want’, such beautiful and

impressive words.

Then Alma continued reading out in alphabetical order some of the

Christian names, their origins and the meanings of some of the women

who are listed in our Bible stories. As there are quite a number she will

continue next meeting – something interesting to look forward to come

September when we hope everyone has enjoyed a relaxing happy time

but without a lot of sunshine!!!

we continued with our usual chatter and welcome cup of tea or coffee

and scones and cake provided by our very talented ladies. Well so ends

another lovely meeting – take care of yourselves and your friends and

families. Anyone who had a birthday, ‘many happy returns’ hope it was

a good one. Hope to see you in September – God willing –

Wednesday 29th July

Once again Linda had been working her ‘magic’ for us for

our meeting which wasx held at a different time and place.

There was twenty three of us present to enjoy afternoonn tea

in ‘Humbles’ café on the North Terrace. it was a bit of a tight

squeeze but we managed, as you do. These Afternoon Teas

seem to be quite the ‘vogue’ now a days, I remember them

from way back. Then they seemed to disappear but I am glad

they are back again – makes one feel so elegant – it’s the

tiered cake stands and finely decorated china that seems to do

the trick.

When we had all arrived and seated for our 2pm reservation

we were presented with a good selection of sandwiches with

various fillings in super white and brown bread accompanied

with scones, jam and cream and small cakes. Something ther I

think to suit everyones taste. It was indeed a splendid treat

which I feel sure that everyone present enjoyed. Linda was

thanked gfor yet another splendid effort and we sat awhile to

allow a heavy burst of rain to clear away – not much of a

summer is it – where’s the sun?

We then said our goodbyes, hoping everyone enjoys the

remainder of the holiday season. Take care, mind how you go

and see you hopefully at our next meeting on August 26th in

St John’s Parish Room at 7pm
