WELCOME LETTERDear Friends, I’d like to personally welcome each of you to the Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta. It’s an exciting time for the Texas Dragon Boat Association as we continue to grow and adapt, remaining always adaptable, motivated and responsive to our community needs. Our organization is confronting a time of many changes and we’re meeting these changes during a time of larger nation-wide and global change. The world of Dragon Boat racing is an exciting area in which to learn more about the organization, network with others, build relationships, and we’ll continue to meet and bring inspired people together in events like this, to ensure our organization continues to spread the message. The Texas Dragon Boat Association is a 501(c)(3) Texas non-profit, whose mission is to promote the tradition of dragon boating, increase awareness of Asian and Asian-American culture, and enhance cross-cultural understanding. In addition to organizing the Edgewater Dragon Boat Challenge in Webster, the Houston Dragon Boat Festival each May and the Gulf Coast International Regatta each October, TDBA is establishing a year-round community teambuilding program, youth education program, and breast cancer survivor program. Fundraising is under way for an East End boathouse and a Fort Bend County boathouse to support these programs. We are particularly excited about the record number of participating youth teams, in addition to corporate teams, community teams, and breast cancer survivor teams. And we extend a Texas welcome to our visiting teams. We invite you to enjoy a day of tradition, teamwork, culture, competition, health, and wellness. We should all be very proud of where we are today and excited about where we are headed. Before I close, I’d like to thank each of your for attending our event and bringing your family to our gathering. You, as a participant or spectator, have the vision, the knowledge, the wherewithal and the experience to help us pave our way into the future. You are truly our greatest asset today and tomorrow, and we could not accomplish what we do without your support and leadership. Throughout this event, I ask you to stay engaged, keep us proactive and help us shape the future of Dragon Boating in Fort Bend County. My personal respect and thanks goes out to all of you!! 12:00PM Carnation CeremonyThis ceremony is a symbolic display to honor everyone who has been touched by cancer. There are many stories behind the faces of all paddlers. There are many supporters not in the boats, whose love and support gave many of the cancer survivors the strength to cope. Since Pink Phurree’s inception in 2007, we have lost 5 members, who will forever live in our hearts. When someone is diagnosed with Breast Cancer, the color pink takes on a whole new meaning. The color pink is embraced in ribbons, flowers, garments, and paddles … any number of ways to show resilience and memory.

This year, in addition to the pink carnations, Pink Phurree is joined by the Houston Heat, who lost their first paddler to cancer earlier this year, Judge Herbert Gee. In his memory, the Houston Heat are all carrying orange carnation in his memory. Gone, but never forgotten.
