The Teresian School SA BHAILE Week of 27 April- 1 May 2020 A Message from our Principal Welcome to the first edion of our Pre & Junior School Bullen which we hope will help keep our school community connected while we stay apart. We have been very busy since our return to schoolwork aſter the Easter break. Our youngest group, Pre-School 1 engaged wonderfully in their first Zoom lesson. We sang songs, celebrated birthdays and congratulated the boys and girls who have now been poy trained! Well done Pre-School 1, we are very proud of you! In addion to the core subjects, we parcipated in Acve Home Week this year in lieu of Acve School Week – check out some of the acvies the Teresian girls and boys have been up to on page 3. We have gradually increased the number of live lessons, please note there are two PE lessons from next week, as well as a live singing lesson. Please find the updated Master Zoom Lessons Timetable aached to this bullen – please remember to wait for a teacher to begin the Zoom lesson. I would like to give a special menon to Class 2 who were due to celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion on Saturday 2nd May. We really look forward to celebrang this special day together once it is safe to do so. Although each Zoom lesson is jammed packed with learning, this week we had a brief class assembly with announcements and importantly a word of thanks for the students and teachers, for staying posive and keeping each other’s spirits up – we are lucky to be part of such a strong school community. In school the students say a morning prayer everyday which finishes with a most appropriate message: “Teach me to appreciate all I am and have, and to do all I can to help others.” At a me when we when cannot see our extended families, we may feel isolated or disappointed by events being cancelled or postponed, it is important to be grateful for all we do have. We are lucky to have the means to stay connected and to keep learning. I would like to say a Míle Buíochas to the teachers and administraon staff for keeping everything going remotely. Thank you to Sheila for compiling this lovely School Bullen. Wishing everyone a relaxing long weekend. We will be back on Zoom, Teams, Seesaw, Skype etc. on Tuesday 5th May. Imagination brings children far beyond their own world. Learning and development happen in many ways and in many places. It occurs in the richness of a day’s activities. KA have been embracing the themes at home from their weekly schedule, developing their imagination and enhancing their learning. Here they share their wonderful ideas with their friends. Well done KA! Just beautiful!

This poem comes from a book called “The Book of Hopes” dedicated to the front line staff.

    AIRFIELD FOREST: Major crime zone!

    THREE LITTLE PIGS ARE MISSING!

    EDITOR (NOT ALEXANDRA), 01/04/2020

A week of horror as crime soars in our forest. Friends of the three little pigs living down Merrion Lane, report they are missing. Last seen in the company of a tall, silver-haired wolf reportedly loitering in the area, the three homes owned by the pigs are believed to have been wilfully damaged in a wild night of crime across our once quiet forest. Police are calling for any witnesses that were in the area on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning to come forward, especially people or animals with a dashcam fitted to their bicycles that may have passed through the area in the last 24 hours. Inspector ‘Red’ Fox confirmed in a press conference today that a silver wolf is an animal of interest in the case and a reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest. This crime comes on the trail of a series of unfortunate events linked to the appearance of werewolves, black wolves dressing in grandmothers’ clothes, others wearing sheep’s clothing, and chasing after boys with the name of Peter. The Mayor of Airfield Forest denies the area is riddled with crime and in an interview declared, “The areas of Airfield Forest, Merrion Lane, Sandywoodland, and Trollball Bridge are safer now than they have ever been, and any alleged crimes by wolves is pure gossip.”

POLICE SKETCH: Blonde-haired burglar believed to be on the loose in the forest.

BRAZEN BLONDE BURGLES BEARS ALEXANDRA WARNES, 31/03/2020

Crime gang on the loose? Police are on the lookout for a bold thief terrorising the woods. In the deep dark forest, past the yellow brick road and in the middle of the woods the three bears lived. They have a big brick house with huge windows, a brown coloured roof and a blue door. A path leads to the door surrounded by tall red flowers and skinny white tulips. At 11 :30am of March 30th police were called after a scary home invasion happened at the bears house. The bears returned home to find their front door open and their house broken into by someone. It was broad daylight with the sun shining and tweeting birds chasing butterflies when the crime happened. Mama bear had made porridge when baby bear wanted to play in the woods before eating. They left the house with the door closed. Police believe the burglar used this time for the crime and a witness told police they saw strange children in the area that morning. The bold thief broke into the bear’s house, and then went on a rampage. The thief entered the bear’s house and she tried one bowl of porridge, but it was too hot then tried the second bowl of porridge, but it was too cold. The thief tried the last bowl and it was just right, so she ate it all. Security camera in the house then showed the burglar went on a crazy rampage in the loungeroom breaking chairs and making a mess. Then she went up the stairs exploring the house until she was tired. Finding some beds, she messed up the sheets before falling asleep in baby bear’s bed. She left a trail of muddy footprints.

Mrs Bear was very upset at all the mess and said the carpet would have to be replaced. The bold thief was still in the house when the bears came home and fled when discovered. Some people are saying the burglar is just an innocent girl lost in the woods, who went inside to get warm and eat some food. The house was very cosy, and she got tired from being lost. Other people are saying she is a scary burglar looking for a house to rob. Police are seeking a young, blonde haired girl for further questions. She is wearing a blue dress and white shirt, red shoes, and has big blue eyes. Inspector Fox said she was last seen in the area talking to a girl with a red hood. Police think this is a gang in the forest and are seeking any information about these girls.

  • Class 5

Class 5 have been working on exposition writing -Distance learning has been very beneficial for this! This week the exposition writing topic was: ‘uniforms should be banned’. They also did a tourist brochure based on a site they were reading about during the week- see some of their photos below.

Emma celebrated her birthday at home recently by making homemade pizza and soufflé - yum!Happy belated birthday, Emma!

    Science experiments!

    Travel brochures!

  • Class 6 have been uploading great work onto Seesaw. They did great projects on the 1916 rising -see Éina’s amazing GPO project below.

There was also lovely art around the theme of “Coming Together to Stay Apart”. See Imogen’s piece below. The lines connecting the countries are meant to symbolise how the world is working together to put a stop to COVID 19. Beautiful!

  • ESL

Catherine worked on procedural writing with her ESL students in the form of a recipe book with recipes from their grandparents. Students had to call one of their relatives and get them to tell them about a recipe from when they were younger. They had to note down all the ingredient, all the equipment required and each step of making it.

Leila from Class 4 below with her finished cake - looks delicious!

  • The Theme of this year’s Poetry Day Ireland, celebrated yesterday, April 30th, was ‘There Will Be Time’.This theme was originally chosen as 2020 is a leap year, when we gain an extra day of time that didn’texist in the previous year. The theme of time has a different meaning now due to the impact of the Covid-19 measures on ourdaily lives and the resulting change in our sense of time passing. Some days can drag, others feel likethere aren’t enough hours in them – this can, of course, always be the case in our day-to-day lives, butwe’re feeling it more at present, as we come together in staying apart to protect one another.

The concept of times coming and going is famously captured in one of The Bible’s most famous andpoetic Old Testament chapters, The Book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3, (verses 1, 2, 4, 5) -‘To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing’

We may be in the ‘refrain from embracing’ and mourning stages at the present, but the knowledgethat the ‘time to embrace’ and time to laugh, and dance, will come around again gives great comfort.Verses such as this, and poetry generally, can be, in a way, a time machine – travelling to the past orthe present or the future, examining the way we were, are, and hope to be. As a School, we celebrated Poetry Day Ireland through a fun, but thought-provoking, activity, ‘PoetTree’: students were encouraged to write out a line of poetry, short poem, song lyric or prayer relating to the theme of time and hang it from a tree or bush in their garden or a nearby green area, or even a houseplant indoors. We had some beautiful and creative picture submissions from this activity, some of which are displayed on the School social media pages and website, with just a selection shown here:

  • Despite us not being together in person this year, it was a very creative Poetry Day. Class 2 wrote somewonderful acrostic poems, showing real ingenuity and ability, as did Class 3 with their wonderfulhaikus – some very talented budding poets in the Junior School!I had been looking forward to the School Library hosting the Teresian School Poetry Festival 2020, butunfortunately that wasn’t to be. Instead, our Drama teacher, Aine, ran the Poetry Festival online, withthe girls recording and uploading videos of themselves reciting their poems. There were somefabulous, really impressive recitals submitted. Awards were given for ‘Highly Commended’, 2nd placeand 1st place – congratulations to the winners and to all the girls who were involved, well done.

As well as a day of celebration, Poetry Day Ireland 2020 was dedicated to the memory of Eavan Boland, one of Dublin’s, and Ireland’s, greatest poets, who passed away on Monday April 27th, aged 75.The School Library has a nice collection of poetry books for all ages, with collections by individual poets and poetry anthologies collected around various themes. I encourage you to have a look on Poetry Ireland’s website, www.poetryireland.ie, for great poetry related resources and links for all ages. RTÉ Radio 1’s Arts programme, Arena, aired a memorial tribute to Eavan Boland earlier this week, which can be listened back to at: https://www.rte.ie/culture/2020/0428/1135284-eavan-bolandremembered-listen-to-the-rte-arena-special/.

Through engaging with reading poetry, silently or aloud, we can explore new heights and depths, remembering Seamus Heaney’s words ‘If we winter this one out, we can summer anywhere’, and thatreading poetry can ‘catch the heart off guard and blow it open’.
