The Class of 2012 has announced their
graduation details. The Valedictorians are Tyler
Harner, Peyton Smith, and Harley Youtzy. The
Salutatorian is Eddie Botello.
Co-Valedictorian Peyton Smith stated her
feelings on sharing the honor of valedictorian
with two of her fellow classmates. “I think
it’s great that the three of us get to share this
opportunity together. We’ve all worked very hard
and helped eachother out. To share this honor
eliminates hostility between us and deinitely alleviates the pressure of giving the speech
in front of everyone. I know I will feel more
comfortable having Harley and Tyler standing
by my side,” she said.
Eddie Botello excitedly expressed his
feelings about earning the title of Salutatorian. He
stated, “I feel ecstatic to have earned this honor.
I was very shocked and excited when I received
the news! Since I have such an academically
competitive class, I never thought I would earn
this privilege.”
Graduation will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday,
May 18th at VHS. Project Graduation will
be held following the graduation ceremony.
Registration begins at 10 p.m. and the event will
run until 2 a.m.
The Senior class selected their class favorites
for the graduation ceremony. The class lower is orange and blue rose and the class colors are blue
and silver. The class song is “We Are Young” by

VHS Senior ahead of the game
One Vienna High School
student, Tyler Harner, has gone
above and beyond by achieving his
Associates Degree before he has
even graduated high school. Tyler
will oficially have his Associates Degree by the end of this summer,
and will start college in the fall as
a junior.
At the beginning of his junior
year, Tyler started taking college
classes at Shawnee Community
College. He took many online,
telecourse, and also in-class courses
there.
He gained numerous college
credit hours, however, through
VHS via dual credit classes. He
also took Escrow classes. By
doing this, he saved much time and
money.
“It was a very challenging
experience but well worth the
stress,” Tyler stated on taking both
college and high school classes
simultaneously.
After high school, Tyler plans
on attending Belmont University in
Nashville, Tennessee. He will have
a great advantage there. “I have
saved my self two years worth of
time,” he stated.
At Belmont, he will inish his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and
pre-medical studies.

Art students excel at local competitionsAt recent local art competitions,
VHS Art Club and Art I & II
students have done really well!
At Little Egypt Arts Association
(LEAA) High School Invitational
from January 16th to February
12th in Marion, three VHS students
entered ive pieces of artwork and all three students placed!
Freshman Art I student
Jacqueline Rigsby’s “Sleepyhead”
won a 1st place ribbon. Sophomore
Art II student Rebecca Sandfort’s
“Tranquility” received Best in
Show and her “Dila” won a 1st place
ribbon. Senior Art II student Harley
Youtzy’s “Toucan” won a 2nd place
ribbon and her “Terminator” won a
1st place ribbon.
There were 28 high schools
that participated at the LEAA
High School Invitational, and each
school could submit a maximum of
ive student art works per each art teacher at that school, so there was
alot of competition.
The LEAA art competition
exhibited some talented local artists
and gave them the opportunity to
win cash and other prizes. It was
also a great chance for students to
view other artists’ works. After the LEAA art competition,
VHS Art I & II teacher and Art
Club Sponsor, Mr. Palmer, said,
“We have some wonderful students
and they make me very proud with their great work!”
At another larger art competition
in Pope County on Thursday, March
22nd, about 20 VHS art students
attended the competition to enter
their art work and to view art work from other schools. Senior Nicole
Howell received a 3rd place ribbon
in the Drawing category! The
drawing was colored pencil of a
zipper opening to a beach paradise.
This year at the Pope County
Art Competition there were over
350 art entries, and VHS entered
approximately 45 art works. There were ive categories:
Drawing, Miscellaneous 2-D Art,
Photography, 3-D Sculpture, and
Computer Graphics. A 1st place,
2nd place, 3rd place, and a Best
overall ribbon were awarded to
select artworks in each category. The judging this year at Pope
County art competition was mainly
based on the meaning of the picture,
not on skill or execution, like what the majority of art competitions
do. There was some controversy
this year over some of the works that won from other schools, but
whether or not a student places at
a certain art competition is not a
true representation of that student’s
skills, because art is always open to interpretation.
Mr. Palmer said, “Some art
competitions, are very subjective.
Without a set criteria, it is basically
interpreted by the judges so
they are critiquing by what they
personally like, which sometimes isn’t agreeable with others.”
Senior Nicole Howell said,
“It was nice to see the different
artworks other students come up with.”
Harley Youtzy’s “Toucan” won 2nd place at Little Egypt Arts Association high school art competition.
Harley Youtzy’s “Terminator” received a 1st place ribbon at the Little Egypt Arts Association High School Invitational.
Rebecca Sandfort’s “Tranquility,” won Best in Show at LEAA.
Rebecca Sandfort’s “Dila” received 1st place at Little Egypt art competition.
At LEAA art show Jacqueline Rigsby’s “Sleepyhead,” received a 1st place ribbon.
Nicole Howell’s “Un-found Paradise” received 3rd place at Pope County.

VHS Senior Beta Club inducts new membersArticle by Harley Youtzy
On Monday, April 16th, VHS Senior Beta
Club inducted their new members. There are 30
new inductees this year, but only 19 attended the
ceremony.
Each year, Senior Beta Club inducts new
members from any grade level into Beta
Club. At the Induction ceremony, students
were recognized for their achievements
and willingness to serve. There was also a
presentation about some of the service projects
that Beta members do.
The Senior Beta Club oficers conducted
the ceremony and gave each new member a
certiicate of membership and a pin. There was also a dinner served of BBQ
chicken and lasagna provided by the Club
oficers, and the attendees all brought a side dish or dessert.
Mrs. Bradley, Beta Club Sponsor, said,
“Looking at the service projects we have taken
on this year, primarily working at Faith Alive
and El Tequila, it is the new members who have
been most willing to work. If they can continue
to remain as committed as they are right now,

then we should have a very strong club moving
into the next three years.”
Freshman Beta Club inductee Matthew
Williams said, “I am excited about being
inducted into Beta Club. We get to do a lot of fun
things, like going to National Beta Convention
and hanging out and meeting new friends.”

Beta Club Week was April 16th to 20th.
Students who participated in the activities
received 15 minutes of in-club hours each
day if they checked in with Mrs. Bradley.
The themes for each day were selected
and agreed upon by the Beta Club oficers. On Monday, Senior Beta Club members
were to wear this year’s black Beta Club
shirt. Tuesday was “Famous Smart Person
Day” and members were asked to dress as
their favorite smart person. On Wednesday,
club members participated in “College Day”
where they could wear apparel from their
favorite college. Thursday was “Career Day”
and students dressed up to represent their
future careers. On Friday, Beta Club members
participated in “Candidate Day,” and wore
any of their VHS Beta Club campaign shirts
(either Drake Sanders’ campaign shirt, Maggie
Cox’s, Kyle Loyd’s, or Dominick Tedeschi’s.)
Mrs. Bradley, Beta Club Sponsor, said,
“The purpose of Beta Club Week is to
celebrate the achievements of those who have
earned the privilege of being members, based

on their academic standing and volunteer
work. It is a way to draw attention to those
students who should be leaders. We didn’t
have as many students participate as I would
have liked, and unfortunately, it seemed as
though the themes that were chosen for each
day were maybe not necessarily exciting
enough to get the students to participate.”

Mrs. Clayton’s 2nd hour Info 2 class has been very busy making mock movie posters. Each student gets a picture of themselves (and other people if they choose to do so) and makes a movie poster that looks as if it could be real.
The irst step to this fun project was to look at real movie posters for popular movies and
ind interesting qualities and features on them that they might apply to their own movie poster.
Each student is supposed to add qualities that a real movie poster would have, including a rating (Not Rated R!), and the credits that are usually at the bottom. The credits include a director, a movie producer and some of the
actors features in your faux ilm! Mrs. Clayton commented,
“Students are learning elements of effective layout and design, as well as photo editing skills in this project.”
When inished with the project, Mrs. Clayton will display the posters around her room. She said, “I love to display the posters in my classroom! They are great examples
of the skills and creativity of the students in my class. This year’s posters are some of the best ever!”
When Junior Andrew Williams was asked what his favorite part about this project was, he replied, “I like that it’s really creative and that we get to do our own thing. It’s really fun.”

by Sheriff Elry Faulkner.
Students were able to see the
911 dispatch center and courtrooms
used for trials. Sheriff Faulkner
explained to the students about
what to do in emergency situations
and what information they
need to provide to the
emergency dispatchers.
He also discussed jobs
available in the department and
what qualiications are needed to be considered for those jobs.
Mrs. Flesch said, “Touring the

Biology II gets al l about bones
Ms. Will-Henn is always
coming up with neat and exciting
ways to study, but also have fun.
One of those ways is what Ms. Will-
Henn calls the “Skeleton Project”
in her Biology II.
The irst step to this project was to pair up with one of your friends.
Once the students had a partner,
they took turns tracing the outline
of each other’s bodies on poster
paper. Once the outline was drawn
on the paper, the students then drew
a skeleton inside their body. They
drew it to the exact replica of a
human skeleton. After the students
had their skeleton drawn, they started
labeling all the different bones in
the human body.
Ms. Will-Henn stated, “The
students were learning by writing out
the names of the bones, which helps
them remember them better, and

doing something hands on, which
helps it stick in the students mind.”
The students in her class had
a lot of fun doing this project.
Junior Bergandi Johnson said,
“I enjoyed doing this project.
It was a great way to learn but
have fun at the same time.”
Her classes watched a Jane
Fonda aerobics workout video
from 1986 to get some ideas for
their routines.
Sophomore Ashton Loyd, who
is in Mrs. Palmer’s class, stated, “I
don’t think that any of us could live
up to that 80’s video, but we tried.
It was fun creating a routine, but
more fun getting to watch everyone
try to do it.”
Mrs. Palmer said, “Their
routines were very good. I’m
proud of the girls. Some groups
really got into it.”
The aerobics unit was a huge
success. The girls had a lot of fun
with getting physically it!
Mrs. Palmer’s all girls PE
classes started performing their
aerobics routines on Wednesday,
April 18th.
Each group picked a song
and designed their aerobic
choreography around it.
While a group performed
their routine, the rest of the class
followed along.
The groups were graded
on the steps of the routine, the
presentation to the class, and
the participation of both group
members to the choreography of
the routine. Mrs. Palmer gave
extra credit to groups that dressed
the part.

Rakes, leaves, and mulch, Oh my!Article by Andrew Williams
On April 24th and 25th, while the Junior class was taking the ACT and PSAE tests, the Freshman and Sophomore classes took ield trips to Shawnee Community College, took their standardized tests, and also found time to do some community service projects as well.
During their time at school after their tests, the Freshman and Sophomore classes cleaned up the school grounds and make it all look fantastic. Some students unloaded mulch into the lower beds next to the commons doors, while others picked up trash against the fence in
the lower parking lot, and raked up leaves. Some students also had a competition to see who could pick up the most gumballs by the tennis courts. Chelsea Mook won with 33 gumballs.
Other students stayed inside and helped clean up Mrs. Clayton’s computer lab. The students wiped down all the keyboards and chairs, sanitized the desks in her room, and also tucked all the computer cords up out of the way.
The students help was greatly appreciated by teachers and the community.

VHS Football Coach travels to California to make football DVD’sArticle by Ellie Bakel
Over spring break, Varsity
football coach Mike Rude lew out to Monterey Bay, California
to spread his football knowledge. This all-expense paid trip was made possible by Mr. Rude making 4 football DVD’s.
Mr. Rude has been speaking at various football clinics around the
U.S. for the past 30 years. He had just made 2 DVD’s for Science of Coaching and in 2006 he made 3 DVD’s for Championship Productions.
This year, Coache’s Choice
chose him to come to California and make four football DVD’s for them. He and his wife lew out on Saturday, March 31st and returned home on Tuesday, April 3rd.
Mr. Rude enjoyed walking on the beaches, going to the Steinbeck Museum, visiting the aquarium, and taking the 17 mile scenic drive on the Monterey Coastline, but Sunday was an entire day spent on making football DVD’s.
Mr. Rude said, “My favorite parts of the trip were meeting Dr. James Peterson and making the 4
DVD’s on the 50 Defense. He is such an impressive individual, he owns Coache’s Choice. Oh, and eating all of the great seafood!”
Mr. Rude said, “Our players could possibly be on the front covers
of the four DVD’s which will sell all over the country.”
When asked about his over-all
experience Mr. Rude said, “You can’t beat it when someone pays the airfare, hotel, rental car and meal money to make football DVD’s, of which I will get royalties.”
Mr. Rude and his wife, Susan Rude in Monterey, California taking some beach time before making football DVD history.

If you know Mr. Palmer, you know that he loves softball; it is a big part of his life. But did you know that since 2003 Mr. Palmer has been inducted into three
different Hall of Fames regarding softball?
In 2003 he was inducted into the USSSA Illinois Hall of Fame. His induction was based on his accomplishments; of being three time all World Honors, MVP of Midwest N.I.T, winning two State Championships, and winning one World Championship.
A couple years later in 2005, Mr. Palmer was inducted into the Illinois/ Missouri Metro Hall of
Fame. For this Hall of Fame they look at your career stats from all three organizations; the ASA Amateur Softball Association, NSA National Softball Association, and the USSSA United States Slow-pitch Softball Association.
Most recently, in 2012, he was inducted into the ASA Illinois Hall of Fame. To receive this honor they looked at his six time All State Honors “AA” Tournament, MVP “AA” State Tourney 1995, and four State Championships.
Mr. Palmer said, “I was very emotional. I never thought I would achieve such an honor. There are a lot of people that helped me attain this.”

donors who had given before, but
also had a few newcomers.
The VHS/Red Cross Blood
Drive has been in existence for
about ten years now. VHS nursing
students help assist the Red Cross
with the blood drive.
This year the blood drive had
a inspirational story along with it.
VHS senior, Dylan Latham, was a
irst time donor at the March 20th blood drive. Since he has turned
16, Dylan has been unable to give,
due to his weight. Things were
different at this particular blood
drive, however, because Dylan
gained just enough weight to be
at the mark to give blood.
“It was such an honor to inally be eligible to give blood,” said
Dylan. “It seemed that I would
never be able to give a donation,
but now that I can, I can honestly
say that there is no greater feeling
in the world than knowing that you
made a difference in someone’s
life.”
On the opposite end of the
spectrum, seniors Eli Brown and
Austin Woolverton have donated
blood every drive that they have
been able to. Eli has donated six
times, while Austin has donated
seven times -- every time that
he has been eligible since his
freshman year.
“I like the feeling I get after
knowing I did something good,”
said Eli. “For anyone who wants
to give blood, it is really not that
bad. The worst part is right before
they stick the needle in, but after
that it is smooth sailing.”
“I love knowing that I help
people in need,” said Austin. “If
you ever get a chance to give
blood, do it!”
This blood drive had a
slightly lower turnout due to
many students being involved in
extracurricular activities that day,
but Mrs. Reichert is still enthused
that some people were able to
give.
“It was very exciting that
Dylan was able to give blood
this year,” said Mrs. Reichert.
“He has been trying to give for a
couple years but was unable due
to his weight.”
When it comes to students
who have donated every time of
eligibility, like Austin and Eli,
Mrs. Reichert is grateful that there
are people in this world like them.
“Giving blood is one of the
most generous acts of kindness
that one can do,” she said. “If you
become a life-long donor, you
will have saved more lives than
ever thought possible.”
Mrs. Reichert encourages
everyone to give blood at the next
blood drive if they are able to.
“There is no substitute for
blood,” said Mrs. Reichert.
“There is a great chance that
you or a member of your family
will need blood at a certain point
in your life, and giving blood is
an enormous contribution to the
health and well-being of others.”
The blood drive was a great
success. Everyone who is eligible
should make a point to give
blood in the future.

On April 19th, Spanish students
traveled to Southern Illinois
University Civic Center to attend
Foreign Language Day.
Foreign Language Day consists
of schools from all around the area
partaking in the many activities
available. Over 1,300 students
competed in various competitions.
Senior Eddie Botello attended the
event. He said, “It was a unique
experience that I was glad to be
part of. I’ve never seen so many
cultures put together in a single
community. It was especially fun
spending time with my cousins.”
VHS Spanish students took part
in the Scholar Bowl portion of the
day. The team consisted of Senior
Harley Youtzy, Junior Dominick
Tedeschi, Sophomores Lucas
Wright, Ashton Loyd, and Avery
Kerley. Their team won their irst match, and answered many Spanish
related questions. VHS Spanish
teacher, Mrs. Jones, said, “I am very
happy to see the level of conidence in the students participating in the
Scholar Bowl, especially doing it
for the irst time.” Unfortunatley, the VHS team was defeated in their
second match.
Senior Harley Youtzy was a
member of the Scholar Bowl team.
She said, “I felt we did really well
in relation to the other teams. We

answered a lot of the questions, and
knew most of the others.”
The day was comprised of more
than just Scholar Bowl, however.
There were numerous classes
students could attend involving
many different languages and
cultures. The most attended portion
of the day was the “Salsa Dancing”
class. Another well attended class
was “Henna: Indian Art” where
students could choose any design
to be drawn on their hands. A few
other classes offered were “Crash
Course in Russian” and “Africa.”
There were also many booths
set up with people who could write
in different languages including
Persian, Russian, Chinese, Korean,
and Arabic. They would write
students’ names in their languages.
Maria Botello stated, “It was really
cool to see how they wrote my
name. Each time it looked like
something else,”
Students also traveled to a
Panaderia, a bread shop, near the
Civic Center. There, they make all
sorts of bread and pastries. Some of
the students took this opportunity
to indulge. Sophomore Lucas
Wright said, “I was glad to learn
about not only Spanish at Foreign
Language Day, but also more about
other cultures as well.”
The students also traveled
to Arturo’s, a Mexican buffet
restaurant, in Carbondale. There,
they ate a big meal of enchiladas,
taquitos, and chips.
Mrs. Jones hopes to take the
Spanish Club back to Foreign
Language Day next year and
advance in Scholar Bowl.

plane leaving from Nashville, TN
to Charlotte, NC. From Charlotte,
the group made the journey of a
lifetime as they stepped foot on a
plane that would take them from
the USA, all the way to Europe.
This year’s Globetrotters trip
spanned over the most days that the
group has ever stayed overseas in
school history. The trip lasted from
March 28th, all the way to April
7th, for a total of 11 days.
The group irst landed in Athens, Greece on March 29th.
When they landed, they took a brief
tour of the city of Athens and got to
sink their toes in the waters of the
Mediterranean Sea.
Days two, three, and four were
spent on a cruise ship touring many
places in Turkey. The group visited
two big cities in Turkey, Istanbul
and Izmir, and got to visit Ephesus.
The group also got to go inside the
biggest mosque in the world.
On day ive, the group inally landed back in Athens to enjoy a
longer stay. While in Athens, the
group got to see the Acropolis and
the Parthenon.
The group left Athens on day
six to see the Corinth Canal and
arrived in Patris for an overnight
ferry ride to Italy on day seven.
The last part of the trip was
spent touring the cities of Pompeii,
Sorrento, Naples, and Rome. The
group also visited the gorgeous
island of Capri and visited historic
such as the Pantheon, Vatican City,
Coloseum, and the old city of
Pompeii that had been destroyed by
Mount Veseuveus.
“This was such a great year to be
a part of the Globetrotters family,”
said VHS teacher and Globetrotter
sponsor, Mr. Gifin. “We got to see two different continents, Europe
and Asia, and had twenty-three
students, which is more than any
previous year’s attendance.”
Mr. Gifin encourages anyone interested to attend next year’s trip
to Berlin, Prague, Krakow, and
Budapest and stated, “It is a trip
you will remember for the rest of
your life. It is sort of expensive,
but worth every penny because the
memories made will last forever.
Go for it!”

As part of the dual credit
government class, Mr. Mike Rude
has assigned the class different
court cases to present to the class
as speeches.
Each student has as much or as
little time they need to go in front
of the class and explain their case.
Mr. Rude commented, “I am
really proud of the work the class
put forth in their speeches. I gave
the class this assignment because
in college they will have to teach
the curriculum to themselves.”
Senior Jacob McGill
commented, “The court cases have
been a lot of fun to give. I think it
gives us a good representation of
how a college will be, and how the
teacher will grade.”
The students have to tell the
name of the case, the year the
case was decided, background on
the case, and the decision of the
Supreme Court.
Senior Chris Ditterline
commented, “I feel that the
government speeches were very
beneicial to my learning, and they gave me a better understanding of
the judicial system.”
In most classes students sit
Seniors Kari Robertson, Chris Ditterline, and Tyler Harner researching their court case for Mr. Rude’s Class.
down and listen to the teacher
teach, but this is different in the
government class.
Students take two days in the
media center to prepare for their
speeches, and unlike most classes,
they become the teacher and try
to make the class understand their
case.
Mr. Rude also said, “This
project will better prepare them for
college, and since this is a college
class I am making them earn the
college part of it.”
The class has really shown that
when it comes to court cases, they
know what it takes to shut the door
on a trial.
Accounting class travels the worldArticle by Ethan Haney
In Mr. Lawrence’s Accounting
class, the students are acting like
an accountant of a business and
are planning a Spring Break trip
to any country to meet with an
entrepreneur to try and expand
their business.
Mr. Lawrence divided the class
into groups of three. The groups’
task is to choose three different
countries (for three different
clients) to move their product to.
The object of the trip is for the
student to impress their client with
their product, so that in return the
entrepreneur will invest in their
product.
The Spring Break business trip
is based on the TV show “Shark
Tank” where accountants try to
convince the “Sharks” to invest in
their product.
The groups must igure the costs for each country they go to.
They have to igure out the cost of a hotel for three nights, three
different restaurants, airfare, and
three different entertainments.
Senior Dylan Latham
commented, “It was a lot of fun
getting to see and learn about
different countries around the
world, and to present what we have
learned to the rest of the class!”
VHS accounting teacher,
Mr. Lawerence, commented,
“This project shows many
functions of business, in chains,
en t repreneurship ,market ing ,
accounting,and international
business. It gives students a real
-life situation and shows how
important it is to manage money
in an eficient manner.”After each group ills out
the chart with all the required
information, they will present
their trip in a PowerPoint.
VHS seniors, Eli Brown and Dylan Lathum, and VHS junior, Jared John-son giving their presentation on their Spring Break business trip.

Kari’s Experience: If I were going to describe Mrs. Clayton using one word, I would probably say “crazy.” Now before everyone goes and gets the wrong impression, I do not mean literally. By crazy, I simply mean out of the ordinary. I can honestly say that I’ve never met someone quite like Mrs. Clayton, except maybe myself, because over the years I have discovered that we are oddly similar. While some of Mrs. Clayton’s classes like information processing, may be very boring, they always end up being the most entertaining.
I mean, in how many classes have you watched a YouTube video about a talking seashell with shoes on? Aside from the random videos and the talk of Amy’s wedding, I have learned a lot from Mrs. Clayton. Freshman year I had one class with her, keyboarding, and every year since then I have made it a point to have at least one class with her simply because I love her. She is always there for me, and I mean always.
I really believe that if I were to need her for something outside of school, she would drop whatever she was doing to help in any way that she could, and I hope she knows that I feel the same about her. I mentioned earlier how I have discovered our oddly similar personalities, and while that may seem like a great time, that’s not always true. Ask Tyler. The longer I sit here the more I realize that I could write an article about Mrs. Clayton that would ill the entire Talon, and while I’m sure she would love that, everyone else would get pretty bored.
So, to sum up my experience with Mrs. Clayton, I would just like to say that it has been great, and if any teacher has made an impact on my life it would be her. As I graduate and move on with my life from Vienna High School, some of my fondest memories revolve around her and her classroom.I am forever grateful for all the things she has done for me. I love you, Mrs. Clayton.
Tyler’s Experience: Throughout my high school career I have experienced many different classes with many different teachers. From Mr. Rude History class and his many “Mickey Mouse” tests, to Mrs. Holhubner and her 100 plus algebra assignment, I have had many great experiences, but none compare to those I’ve had with the one, the only, Mrs. Joan Clayton.
Anyone who has ever had a class with Mrs. Clayton will deinitely agree that she is an experience. Through her numerous class speeches and countless rants about how she may or may not have been on the Oprah show, Mrs. Clayton has shown many different colors, and by colors, I mean personalities. Although she has far too many personalities to record, there are three personalities that have been documented. The irst is the fun, outgoing, best friend Mrs. Clayton that will spend all class period talking to you about how your weekend went and how her weekend went, her daughters’ weddings, and her numerous vacations. This Mrs. Clayton is truly one of my closest friends, and she will be greatly missed.
The next is one of a very dramatic sort (some Talon members may know her as Coann); this personality is known to be ditzy, scatter brained, and slightly whiney, but none the less, I couldn’t live without her. The inal personality is one to be reckoned with. She is the very driven, stubborn, and hardworking Talon adviser. For last minute deadline changes to completely throwing out articles right before the print date, this Mrs. Clayton and I have clashed many times. Those that have witnessed one of our countless spats can tell you that they aren’t always pleasant. Many have resulted in screaming matches, name calling, spiting matches, and some even in tears. Although these many conlicts were stressful and most of the time unnecessary, I wouldn’t change a single one. Even though Mrs. Clayton and I have gone through a few rough patches,
Mrs. Joan Clayton:As editors for the past three years, we have a lot of experience with Mrs. Clayton and the many things that make her, well…her. Throughout the years we have developed a relationship with Mrs. Clayton that is a bit hard to deine. The three of us have decided to write an article to describe each of our onw indevidual experiences as our way of not only saying goodbye, but thank you. Thank you for always being there, being understanding, helping us in any way possible, and most importantly, being you. Because if you weren’t always so “you” we wouldn’t be writing this article.
I still think she is a wonderful teacher and a great friend. I’m very privileged to have known her. I love and will miss her greatly.
Isaac’s Experience: After being with Mrs. Clayton for the last two years, I have learned that there are certain things that you MUST know when being in Talon. First of all, you must know that you will NEVER develop an entertainment article that’s as good as hers. Amazing ideas such as the Grafiti Wall for example, cannot be duplicated. Know the difference between “your” and “you’re.” You of courseare expected to know exactly what’s on her mind at all times and what she wants you to do.
There is always an original idea out there just waiting to be put into The Talon. You’re expected to be in a “Talon state of mind” from day one to the inal day. ALWAYS use “fun fonts” and try to stay clear of clip art, it is impossible to predict what’s coming next with Mrs. Clayton. The inal thing that you must know when joining the Talon Team is that you have the best instructor ever, one that cares about you and is always there whenever you are having a bad day and just need someone to talk to. Mrs. Clayton has been a big part of my school life the last two years, and I am so grateful I have had the opportunity to be a be a member of the Talon Team.
Mrs. Clayton, we have had some amazing times in the past two years with our crazy conversations, our plans to become “better people” (which were a complete success by the way), and our scrambling around trying to complete the paper before deadline. I am so blessed that I got to spend this time with you, and I am going to miss you so much. You have truly helped me become the journalist that I am now, and I will continue to use what you have taught me in my future schooling and career. Thanks for being such an inspirational part of my life Mrs. Clayton. I love you!
Senoir Co-Editiors-In-Chief, Tyler Harner and Kari Robertson, Managing Editor, Isaac Roger, and Talon Adviser, Mrs. Joan Clayton, wrap up their inal Talon experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Latham Photoshops himself on Pokemon.22. Chris and Latham never meet deadlines.23. McGill is never in the class due to all the errands he runs.24. Chris and Latham are never at school.25. We purposely sabotaged the layout of this page.26. None of our ideas are origi-nal.27. We NEVER listen.28. She doesn’t know if we are humans or dancers.29. We recycle in what are meant to be storage containers.30. We sing in class.31. We cause general errors.32. We refuse to let Mrs. Clay-ton’s opinions matter.33. We hate doing four enter-tainment articles every issue along with actual articles.34. We are just too good for the Talon.35. Latham expects thank yous for corrections and other things.36. McGill is oblivious too society and pop culture.37. We refuse to admit our faults and imperfections.38. We tell Ashton to shush it every ive minutes.39. McGill hates wearing jeans.40. Chris and McGill’s time spent selling Talon advertisements is
When the three of us started this class in fall 2010, it was the beginning of a glorious relationship with the wonderful Mrs. Clayton, in a period known as the glory days. The follow-ing are the amazing things that we have done for Mrs. Clayton or she has done for us:
1. Latham once spent ive plus hours splicing music and making labels for her daughter’s wed-ding.2, McGill set up computers in her room so that she would not have to.3. Chris had a heart felt moment on how he would miss annoying her after his senior year.4. We actually do our work when she needs us to the most.5. We help pass out Talons when they arrive from the Vienna Times.6. We help bring amusement and enjoyment to her life.
Just as with any relationship, there is always the “rocky” period where things may not always seem bright. The following are the “rocky” moments in our time together and reasons she may not always love us as much:
1. We make stupid lists.2. We use Comic Sans in head-lines.3. McGill always interrupts, so that makes us accomplices.4. We remind her of her high school self.5. We are too good looking.6. McGill, Chris, and Latham don’t give two cares about work-ing.7. Our entertainment articles are crossword puzzles and word searches.8. McGill does the same articles every issue but with different teacher pictures.9. We hate proper punctuation.10. Latham cannot do anything productive BUT Photoshop.11. Chris whines because she requires too much of him. He is just a humble blacksmith.12. We make lists describing why she hates us.13. Latham is the “diet coke” of layout.14. Latham’s e-mail picture is Sonic the Hedgehog.15. We give her previously done entertainment articles.
Throughout the past couple years, Talon has been a wonderful ride for Dylan, Jacob, and me. But now that se-nior year is almost over, there is one person we would like to thank, Mrs. Clayton. Mrs. Clayton, we all thank you for what you have done for us, we appreciate every bit of it and we will all miss you sincerely. With that being said, we have compiled a list of reasons why you could not live without us. We will miss you, Mrs. Clayton!
followed by Dairy Queen.41. We dislike looking for “Things I Like About this News-paper”.42. We ind nothing we like from number 41 because the Talon is perfect with us writing it.43. We tell her we spell check so she feels better, but we just highlight red marks so it looks productive.44. We refuse to take our own pictures.45. Our entertainment articles are us in random places. 46. We are turning her hair gray.47. She misses days just to get away from us.48. We have no clue what leading is.49. The Juniors are more ma-ture than us.50. We aren’t scared of her.51. We distract those around us.52. Latham cannot indent tabs.53. Our headlines are too cre-ative for her taste.54. We have too much fun.55. Our fonts are too enjoy-able, they are supposed to bore people.56. Clip art is all over our ar-ticles.57. We don’t work when she is gone.58. We cannot create a page without missing links.59. We don’t save pictures to the right folders.60. It is easier to think of rea-sons she hates us.61. We use logic.62. McGill and Latham hate the
Talon Grafiti Wall.63. Chris still doesn’t know what the Talon Grafiti Wall is.64. We ignore her ideas and sug-gestions.65. Chris skips class and gets caught.66. We don’t sing very well, ex-cept for McGill.67. We think we sing well.68. We didn’t turn hyphenation off this page.69. Chris had a hard time think-ing of a nice thing he has done for her.70. Spotlights....well you know Mrs. Clayton ;)71. We are better behaved with substitute teachers.72. We show no respect for pri-vate property and privacy.73. McGill makes corny jokes.74. We think Mrs. Clayton can be quite obtuse at times.75. We never check our Talon e-mail.76. Chris and Latham had no clue there was such a thing as a Talon e-mail.77. McGill asks aloud how to spell words.78. We always miss deadline day.79. We sigh out loud because of assignments.80. We have no work ethic.81. We take no for an answer when selling ads.82. We complain about not get-ting pizza parties.83. She cannot trust us.84. Because.85. We know we ARE the Talon.86. Kari and Tyler cannot control us.87. We interrupt her speeches.88. We criticize her yelling abili-ties. They could be louder.89. We put down everyone’s ideas.90. We do not use our class fold-ers.91. We did not know that we even had class folders.92. We refuse to show signs of weakness.93. We work on other class as-signments instead of articles for the Talon.94. We are her ‘escape’ goats when everything in the Talon is going bad.95. We do everything on this list, everyday that we have been in this class.

Everyone knows that there are times in class when there is NO chance you’re going to pay attention. Your mind drifts off and you start to think about what is really important to
you. These Seniors and Mr. Hill were caught in the act! What were they thinking? Take a look for yourself.
Dear Heather,
I wish I could speed up the
clock. This whole 40 minutes
without you is terrible.
Yum! I totally love
my new lip gloss!
What is Mr. Hill

their ratings skyrocket.
Kelly Fitzgerald - My dream
present is to go on the Globetrotters
trip to Greece, Italy, and Turkey,
because I love to travel and
experience different cultures. I also
would love to get all my best friends
on another continent.
Dylan Latham - I want one
more blast with my friends and
every video game made since the
beginning of time.
Kari Robertson - I would like for
my car to be paid off so I don’t
have to make my monthly payments
anymore.

Kassey McDonald - A fully paid
vacation with my friends to the
Islands of Bora Bora, with at least
$200,000 to spend there.
Jessica McMahon - My dream gift
would be a house in Beverly Hills
fully paid for with a butler to clean
and to cook anything my friends
and I would like.
Kyle Loyd - A Corvette ZR1,
because it is my dream car and not
a lot of people have one, so I would
stand out.
Jacob McGill - I would want a
guitar studio in my room so I could
play any guitar at any time.
Marissa Ross - I would have all of
my college paid for, so I could start
my life after college and not have to
worry about debt.
Jessica Capron - I would like a trip
to France, then have college paid
for me in Italy so I can get out of
the USA.

and play every game like it is your last
because trust me buddy, it goes by fast, too
fast. To a very good friend of mine, you
know I am here for you and would take
a bullet for you. You mean the world to
me and I would do anything for you. Keep
your head up and stay true to yourself. And
last but not least, to every student here at
Vienna, I want you to know something. No
matter what life throws at you, whether it be
school problems, family problems, or even
relationship struggles, ind someone who you can talk to and remember, there are
people who you would never think about
that care for you and would do anything
for you. Be yourself, get involved, make
a name for yourself, and enjoy what little
time you have here in high school. It has
been an honor to have gone to such a
