A Message from Her Excellency:
Greetings!
I pray that this missive finds everyone well and perhaps enjoying a sunshiny day!
I would like to offer my congratulations to our hard working Chroniclers (past and present) for the Blackfox
nomination recently. It's quite an honor and well deserved. I would also like to thank those who turned out for
the demo that Lord Gilbert organized in July. I'm so glad to hear it went well and I'm sorry I was unable to
attend. Robert, Rhiannon and I had a lovely evening playing mini-golf and I wish more of you could have been
there, it was loads of fun and you missed it! I was also glad to hear that a bunch of you had a very productive
garb making day at the library. I can't wait to see some wearing the products of your labor. Unfortunately I
was sad that our "flash-mob" demo didn't get to happen at City-County plaza. I hope that in the future when
we make such commitments, and especially when it's published in the paper, we won't have to cancel at the
last minute.
I'm looking forward to Games and Gluttony II happening in Sept. It should be a fun, casual day for food and
friendship--which are always great things!
And, as always, please remember that if you have been noticing someone in the Barony working really hard or
excelling at something, please send me (or Their Majesties) a recommendation letter. I would really appreciateit.
Have a wonderful August!
Baroness Deirdre
A Message from Our Seneschal:
Dearest Denizens of the Rather Damp Domain of Hawkwood,
I hope that you have all found ways to keep dry in this interestingly wet summer! I know that some of you
travelled to represent our fair lands at Pennsic. I hope that you have all returned safely! It seems to have been
a busy month for everyone and I would like to take a moment to thank those that were able to take time from
their schedules to assist Lord Gilbert with the demo. Thank you especially to Lord Gilbert for spotting an
opportunity for us to share our enthusiasm with others and facilitating the event!
We have no meeting this month but I would like to point out that we do have a dinner night out scheduled for
the 11th
of this month. Nearby, we have Sacred Stones Baronial Birthday August 30- September 1st. Furtheraway, Dun Carraig also has a Birthday celebration on the 31
stand Ravens Cove is celebrating their Birthday
September 7-8th
.
I had hoped to start a quarterly Sunday dinner meeting but upon reflection, with Games and Gluttony coming
up on September 28th
and War of the Wings close on its heels on October 9-13th
, it would just be an
impractical time to change things around. I look forward to seeing you all on September 4th
at the regular
place and time.
In Service,
Lord Fionn MacKonnell
Seneschal,

In the mundane world the Barony of Hawkwood and the SCA are making headlines!
First up, we have an article that appeared in theMountain XpressJuly 16th, 2013 and it was written byEdwin Arnaudin .
The article features an interview with our very own Seneschal Lord Fionn MacKonnell about the SCA
and what we are about. If you havent read it yet, it is repeated here for your enjoyment.
Storming the Castle
By Edwin Arnaudin on 07/16/2013 01:00 PM
On nearly every weekend of the year, somewhere in the Kingdom of Atlantia, a passionate group of everyday
citizens from South Carolina to Maryland recreates the best aspects of the Middle Ages. These are members of
the Society for Creative Anachronism, who are well-versed in aspects of life from the years 600-1600 and
make it their duty to keep those traditions alive.
Were just history buffs trying to have fun and looking to relieve stress, says Rich Coleman, Seneschal (orhead officer) of the SCAs local chapter, The Barony of Hawkwood.
Founded in Milpitas, Calif., in 1966, the SCA began as a single-occasion theme party but attendees didntwant the festivities to end. The organization now counts more than 30,000 members and 100,000 participants
worldwide, with Hawkwood encompassing North Carolinas western region.
Members are initially drawn to the organizations martial activities. Rapier fighting is popular, as is heavy-
weapons fighting, thrown-weapons activities, archery and equestrian events. These forms of combat thencome together in field battles between armies, sometimes with blunted arrows raining down during combat,
and an occasional siege, involving the storming of a castle.
Though the martial activities are among the SCAs showier features, a wide array of quieter pastimes havetheir own practitioners. Drawing from the vast array of arts, crafts and court activity from the thousand years
in question, members preserve the eras woodworking, glass blowing, jewelry making, cooking, calligraphyand scribal arts and traditional dances.
People like to look back and in many ways it was a time when things really were more simple. It allows folks
to slow down for a bit, Coleman says. If you can think of it, we do it.
Many people in the SCA have been studying their particular area of expertise for years. Arts and crafts
competitions are held by people with decades of experience, some of whom are professors or librarians, who
in turn request that entrants bring documentation to show that in-depth research has been done through
legitimate sources.
Everyone likes a goal, Coleman says. Youdont have to engage in competitions to have fun, but they areavailable as a way to be recognized and put yourself in line for an award. The more recognition, the more
likely you are to have someone ask how you do it, and a lot of it is about sharing with other people. Were

different from Ren Fairs in that its about sharing; not just watching, but participating.
Hawkwood distinguishes itself with a recognized and respected rapier community, but is also becoming known
for its scribal work. Members scrolls are becoming noticed at competitions and the groups dancing, throughcurrently small, is seeing interest increase.
I would also like to think that we excel at our sense of humor, Coleman says.
Though the variety of activities may seem daunting, the SCA welcomes newcomers and is eager to help steer
them toward their interests. For inquisitive beginners without an era-appropriate wardrobe of their own,
members do their best to find workable clothing at events. Loaner gear is always available and as long as an
effort is made, even tying towels around one's neck as a makeshift tunic is welcomed.
We want everyone to have fun and feel like theyre experiencing the best that time period had to offer,Coleman says.
One isnt required to pay dues to participate in the SCA, but membership comes with discounts at events, apersonalized SCA card that makes check-in at these events easier, access to monthly publications, and the
potential to hold an office.
While the fun and camaraderie during events is a prime attraction, the SCAs benefits extend beyondweekends and into daily life. Everyone has worth and is considered at least minor nobility, so that all are
treated with a modicum of respect. Likewise, the focus on romantic chivalry doesnt end when the work weekbegins, as members look for opportunities to be of service in the world and act accordingly.
This friendly spirit will next be on display during a recruitment event in downtown Asheville on Saturday, July
20, followed by a garb-making get-together the following day from 1-5 p.m. at the Enka-Candler Library. About
two months later, one of Hawkwoods two major annual events kicks off with Games & Gluttony 2 on Sept. 28
at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Candler. Armored and rapier fighting are planned, amid agenerous food spread and general good cheer, with a particular focus on handmade dice and card games of
the time.
We want more participation however we can get it, since more people equals more research, Coleman says. What drives me is that Im well aware that lots of people really need what the SCA has to offer but they dontknow about it.
The Barony of Hawkwood makes the news again, this time within the borders of
Atlantia
The Atlantia Blackfox Award nominations have been posted in emails and social media. Our very own former

Getting To Know... Lord Gilbert de Chtillon
What is your correct name and title in the SCA?
Lord Gilbert de Chtillon. It is pronounced Jill-bear Day Sh-te-yon with the n being silent.
What is your highest title?
Lord. I have my Award of Arms.
And how do you prefer to be addressed?
Seigneur Gilbert de Chtillon. Seigneur is French for Lord. Lord Gilbert is fine.
Are you affiliated with a household?
No.
How long have you been playing?
I started in 2007, but between college, work, and finances I did not have time to be very active. I became
more active when I moved to Hawkwood in 2010.
What do you do in the modern world?
I am a Funeral Director and Embalmer.
What keeps you in the SCA?
I am pretty obsessed with the middle ages and love being part of a group the recreates that culture and time. I
love dressing fancy and fighting. I also love our barony and its people. I am proud to be in a group with those
who value honor and chivalry in a world where so few people do.
What is your focus in the SCA?
I focus mainly on rapier fighting, but I really want to get into Cut and Thrust. I am very interested in medieval
French history, particularly Burgundian history. My persona is a mid 15th
century Burgundian coutillier, a light
cavalryman in the army of Charles le Temeraire. I try to dress as true to that as possible and even fight with a
more 15thcentury style sword, even though it is slight disadvantage for rapier fighting.
What do think is important about service?
Putting on an SCA event is similar to putting on a play or movie and everyone is an actor. In addition to actors,
promoters, set designers, managers and directors are needed. In the SCA however, we do not have separate
people for these tasks. Everyone needs to contribute in what way they can to bring life to our medieval world
and let everyone have a chance to enjoy the event. Service is an essential part of the SCA.

12/18
What other things interest you in the SCA?
I am always interested in seeing the crafts people create. I have dabbled in scroll making and dancing. I have
always wanted to get into equestrian activities as well but time does not always permit committed
involvement.
What is your favorite event?
I have yet to go to a large war but I am sure I will love that. So far Hawkwood Birthday was the most fun I have
had at an event.
Do you have other hobbies outside the SCA?
I like board games, role playing games, some computer games, reading (fantasy, history, historical fiction), and
indulging in fancy Belgian beer.
What advice do you have for newcomers?
I would say to dabble. Try many things to find out what you like. Even if you pick something to focus on, it isgood to branch out and support what others are doing. If you stay too narrowly focused on one aspect of the
SCA, you lose the overall sense of the medieval world that everyone has come together to build.

will present one story each month until the entire series is finished. Thank You MistressDervila for contributing your wonderful talent!

The time is how long it takes me to tell the story. Your milage may vary. The italicized phrases in square
brackets are like stage directions. I am a very kinetic storyteller; I move about a lot. If thats not your style, you
should drop the stage directions. Or you can drop or change the stage directions if you like. If you do remove
the stage directions, you might need to tell the audience whats going on, since youre not showing them.
And remember, if youre not having fun, youre not doing it right.
English Stories
The Peddler of Swaffhem
From Favorite Folktales from Around the World page 414.
Time: 2:32
The peddler woke up that morning and shook his wife awake.
[Excited] Wife, wife, I have just had a dream!
[Groggy]So? Many people have dreams when they sleep.
But this is the third night in a row I have had this dream!
[Big sigh.]So what was this dream of yours?
I dreamt that if I went to London bridge I would find a great treasure!
Why did you wake me up for this?
To tell you that I am going to London bridge.
London? But it is so far away!
Which is why Im leaving right away! And the peddler was as good as his word. It took him three days to
walk from his home in Swaffhem to London bridge, but when he got there, [pause, show confusion] he didnt
know what to do. The bridge was guarded, and he had no idea where to look for his treasure. After he had
been there for three days, a guard walked up to him.
Ive seen you here for three days now, neither selling goods nor begging alms. What are you doing here?
[Feeling slightly foolish, hang head slightly, speaks hesitantly]Um - I dreamt that if I came to London bridge I
would find a great treasure.
[Laughing]Foolish man! Why, I dreamt three nights in a row about treasure, too. I dreamt that it was underan oak tree in front of the house of a peddler in Swaffhem. But you dont see me making that long journey!
There is no treasure here, go home and dont follow dreams anymore.
[Really? Cool! Beaming]Thank you, kind sir, for your excellent advice. As soon as he got home he dug
beneath the great oak in front of his house and found a chest full of treasure. He was a generous man, and the
people of the town profited from the peddlers treasure as much as the peddler himself. So they put up a
statue of the peddler, with his sack on his back and his little dog following. And it has stood there from that
day to this.

Baked Zucchini
*Note from Chronicler - this recipe appeared on the web from Skinny town USA. The directions were a bit confusing as
the chef or author used a narrative method in giving the directions. I made this recipe for my family and adapted the
directions and ingredients to suit our tastes. My husband and I enjoyed it and if mlord Thomas will eat it, it must be
good! *
Ingredients:
3 large zucchinis
Large onion, chopped
1 Tablespoon butter
5-6 slices Smoked bacon, chopped (we love bacon so I used more!)
1 Tablespoon of sour cream
- teaspoon of salt
teaspoon of curry powder
1 Roma tomato seeded and chopped
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (ground thyme will do if you dont have fresh)
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese (if you dont want to grate it yourself you can find small pouches of shredded
in the dairy aisle along with other shredded cheeses)
Fresh cracked or course ground pepper
You can omit the bacon for a vegetarian dish or use other vegetables and olives.
Directions:
1. Give the zucchini a quick wash for good measure.
2. Slice in half lengthwise. Leave the ends on to keep the filling in.
3. Leaving a ledge of zucchini around the edges, scoop out the flesh with a melon baller or a spoon and
reserve.
4. Arrange the zucchini boats in a baking dish. Chop the reserved zucchini flesh and place in a bowl and set
aside.
-
8/13/2019 August Talon 2013
15/18
5. Finely chop a sweet onion and set aside.
6. Fry up the bacon, drain well on paper towels and then chop. Drain off remaining bacon grease from the pan,
reserving just a bit for sauting the onions OR drain off all grease and add 1 Tablespoon of butter for sauting.
7. Add onions to the pan add curry powder and saut, until done and remove from the heat.
8. To the zucchini, add sour cream. Rough chop the thyme leaves and add. Add onions and bacon to the
zucchiniseason further to taste.9. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and make sure they are seeded or else there will be too much moisture in the
mixture.10. Refill the zucchini boats with the filling mixture.
11. Depending which you use, grate or sprinkle the shredded parmesan cheese on each zucchini boat and then
top with fresh cracked pepper.
12. Bake uncovered at 375 degrees F. for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and top with more grated cheese if
desired.
Enjoy!
