Arion’s Trip
Against the orders of the oracle, Arion went to Italy to compete in a music competition.
Arion won every event, and the fans liked him so much they gave him prizes and gifts.
While in Italy, he invented the dithyramb, a song of praise.
On the Sea After leaving the festival, Arion boarded a ship to go
home. On the ship, the captain and his crew planned to take
arion’s gifts and then kill him Arion asked to play one last song before he died, so
the captain said yes. He played the dithyramb so beautifully that dolphins
and all the creatures of the sea came to hear it. He then jumped off of the ship, and a dolphin and its
group rescued him and returned him to his home.
Arion Returns Home Arion returns a day before the ship. Arion tells his friend, king Periander of Corinth,
what happened on the sea. When the ship arrives, the captain and crew are
caught and hanged. When the dolphin died, Arion gave him a
magnificent funeral. When Arion died, Apollo placed him in the stars
along with his dolphin friend.
