WELCOME TO COTATI: THE HUB OF SONOMA COUNTY!

Welcome to the “Hub of Sonoma County,” the city of Cotati. Cotati was

founded in 1893 and incorporated in 1963 and is one of only two cities in

the United States based on a hexagonal design. We are located in one of

the most beautiful areas in California and are conveniently located a short distance

from both rural and cosmopolitan pursuits. Cotati offers a location with small town

charm with access to larger urban centers. And our proximity to Sonoma State Univer-

sity includes an infusion of youthful energy to our town’s commerce.

With the support of the community through Measure G, Cotati has been able to

bring back our recreation programs, which has been a high priority of the City Council

for quite some time. As Cotati’s recreational opportunities have begun to develop, we

have realized a need to reach our community with information about our ongoing and

upcoming programs and events through this Activity Guide, as well as the City website,

social media, utility newsletters, and our online registration page for Parks and Recre-

ation programs. In our guide, you will find information regarding our school year classes

and camps, special events, and more. There’s sure to be something for everyone!

As we continue to move forward, you will see even more improvements for our Parks

and Recreation Department. This Fall and Winter, you can expect to see new and con-

tinuing community events, camps, and classes, including new farm based programs

with the Veronda-Falletti Ranch. If you are looking for programs not currently offered,

drop us a line at [email protected] with your suggestions.

We look forward to seeing you all enjoying Cotati as we strive to keep small city

charm and continue to make Cotati a wonderful place to work, live, and play!

FALL/WINTER 2019-20 / 3

DEAR FRIENDS,

More than 250 of Cotati’s businesses and individuals are members of the

Chamber of Commerce. There are many reasons why they join, but one is our

bi-weekly online newsletter. In it they find items of interest such as special

events like the Cotati Music Festival, Oktoberfest, Farmers’ Market, Kids Day and

Holiday Cheer; deals on local items and stories about interesting people and places.

A recent story was about the Cotati Speedway built in 1920 near the Cotati railroad

tracks. Sadly it only lasted for two years but the wood from that track was used to

construct some of the buildings in town. One of those was the Redwood Café whose

floor was made from that wood. Another interesting fact about Cotati: the Jim Boggio

statue in La Plaza Park, created to honor Boggio who started the Accordion Festival,

has a real accordion cast in the bronze. Check it out. There’s so much more to be found

in the Chamber newsletter and around town.

You don’t have to be a member to receive the newsletter. Just drop an email to

[email protected] and we’ll add you to the list.

Get to know your chamber and member businesses on starting on page 24. And

when you can, please shop local to benefit your community.

Feel free to stop by the office, call us with questions or follow us on Facebook,

Instagram and/or Twitter.

OLIVER’S MARKET BAKERY Oliver’s Market, 546 East Cotati Avenue | 707 795-9501

oliversmarket.com/store/cotati

Marghi Sulas, bakery coordinator at Oliver’s Market says “We

bake the world a better place.” Sulas and her team of artisans

love creating and are known for their fancy cakes, pastries and

sweets. One of the fun and exciting favorites is the Princess

Cake which is a vanilla cake, layered with a hint of raspberry

jam and a blend of pastry cream and whipped cream, with a

beautifully-color Marzipan covering. It brings a lovely surprise

when cut.

The glass cases in the Oliver’s bakery are filled with six and

eight-inch sized cakes topped with fresh flowers, seasonal

fruits and shaved Belgian chocolate, among other toppings.

Icings, mousses, curds and ganaches are made in-house and

use locally-made ingredients whenever possible. Selections are

continually changing, highlighting the best of what is in season.

Specialty coffees as well as smoothies and juices, cookies

and pastries, pies and doughnuts, round out the Oliver’s

Market Bakery.

FEATURE

EL PASO BAKERY 8274 Old Redwood Hwy | 707 665-9068

A small but delicious spot is El Paso Bakery which has

something extra not normally seen in a bakery. In addition

to specialty custom cakes (most popular is tres leches) they

serve scoops of ice cream, found nowhere else in town. Get

a cone or a cup on a warm day and spend a few minutes

out on the patio watching downtown Cotati go by.

El Paso Bakery makes a mixture of Mexican and French

pastries, including the stand-out pink Conchas, Mexican sweet

bread. They make beautiful specialty cakes for birthdays,

weddings and other of life’s events. Their flan is authentic and

delicious. Their cookies and Mexican breads are outstanding and

the friendly owners and staff make visitors feel welcome, like

old friends over the past 14 years they have been in business.

Morning breakfast bagels are served warm and tasty.

“A delicious little Mexican bakery, always friendly and great

prices. They have tons of delicious traditional Mexican breads

and pastries from conchas to cuernos, and lots more,” says

Tony Sarg, a recent visitor to El Paso Bakery.

It’s not just little girls who are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. Sometimes

it’s about places that make you feel special—like a bakery! There are plenty of exceptional

bakeries all within a 2-mile radius in sweet little Cotati. Looking toward the holidays, the

bakeries are gearing up for sweet treats and savories to make your gatherings special.

YOUR SWEET EXPECTATIONS8099 La Plaza | 707 285-2013

YourSweetExpectations.com

One of the most traditional bakeries in town is Your Sweet

Expectations. This gourmet dessert bakery and café is

lead by owner Carolyn Bessé. Carolyn and her talented

bakers and artists create custom theme and specialty

cakes for any occasion. But cakes are only one part of the

experience. Each day you can find the bakery cases filled

with cupcakes, cookies, pastries and other delectables, in

addition to breakfast items, sandwiches and savories.

A special treat is Carolyn’s signature icing called WCCCI.

Tasting like heaven, it’s made from a recipe incorporating

whip cream and cream cheese!

In 2018, Carolyn won the award for “Best in Taste”

cake at the Sonoma County Art of Desserts competition.

Carolyn and team create wedding cakes, custom cookies,

cupcakes, special occasion cakes and custom desserts to

delight guests and party planners across California. Each is

a work of art, from attractive, elegant designs to the moist,

mouth-watering taste of the cake.

RED BIRD BAKERY 556 East Cotati Avenue | 707 521-9838

redbirdbakery.com

New this year to Cotati is Red Bird Bakery, where Artisan

breads, baked goods, custom cakes, pastries, and delights

are made in the early hours of each day, often selling out

before the day is done. Their family name, Cermak, is Czech.

It translates to ‘red bird’ which they thought was a catchy

name for a bakery, says Linda Cermak. Isaac’s dad always

wanted to open a bakery with Isaac and Linda. That plan was

realized in Red Bird.

Beautifully decorated cakes, fancy desserts and breads are

influenced by the seasons and the market. Both Isaac, in bread

making, and Linda, as a pastry chef, have vast experience and

have worked at award-winning bakeries such as the The Model

Bakery in Napa and Della Fattoria in Petaluma. The Cermak’s

make the most of local and regional markets, incorporating

nature’s bounty into their recipes, creating homemade jams,

pickles, syrups and spreads in addition to sweets and breads.

Hungry for lunch? They also make delicious sandwiches

and salads.

“We love making hand-crafted, delicious, and nourishing

food to feed our children and, by extension, our family of

customers,” says Isaac. And they do catering!

SIFT DESSERT BAR 7582 Commerce Blvd. | 707 792-1681

siftdessertbar.com

Owner Andrea Dallus of Sift had one brief but powerful

vision for her bakery when she started just over 10 years ago:

Bring happiness to celebrations nationwide. Sift is known for

its cupcakes and its many flavor options, including Lemony

Snicket, Ooh La La (Red Velvet), Pink Champagne, Samoa

and so many others. They base all of their desserts from 14

main flavor profiles. From those flavors, 58 dessert items are

created!

But because they are a dessert bar (not just a cupcakery),

they also carry French macarons, whoopie cookies, pies, cakes,

cruffles, (cake on a stick without the stick), ice cream sammies,

cake shakes and frosting shots. Each and every dessert is

outstanding and served with a smile!

Sift creations have appeared in People Magazine and were

the featured cupcakes at actress Tamera Mowry’s wedding and

baby showers. In 2011, Sift took first place the Food Network’s

CUPCAKE WARS in the wedding category.

Have some thoughts on a new flavor? They love new ideas.

Women of CotatiH O N O R I N G

Sunday, November 3rd | 2-4pm

COTATI ROOM, COTATI CITY HALL, 201 WEST SIERRA AVE, COTATI

Join us as we celebrate a number of Cotati women who contributed to our community over the last century. Local

panelists will share stories of three particular citizens who lived in the community from the 1920s to the 2010s:

Ethel Clothier, Marguerite Hahn, and Prue DraperMarie McNaughton will speak about the spirited women

who founded Cotati’s first Ladies’ Improvement Club and the city’s first female voters.

We hope also to open the floor to anyone wishing to honor a Cotati woman of their choosing with stories, pictures, and/or

artifacts. Anyone wishing help in preparing a short presentation or to volunteer to help with the event can contact CHS at

707-794-0305 or [email protected].

This free event is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
