We are thrilled to offer a variety of camps and classes that will provide a workout for your camper’s heart, mind, and body during the summer of 2013. In addition to numerous camps staffed by our own talented teachers, we are pleased to serve as the host for several independent groups including Active Learning Adventures/USA Chess, Virginia Fishing Adventures, Young Rembrandts, Bricks 4 Kidz, K&L Sports, and Bob Foley Basketball. Camp Steward Afternoon AdventuresCamp Steward Afternoon Adventures is just right for your adventuresome camper. Whether go-cart racing, moon-bouncing, or laser-tagging, the possibilities for a good time are endless at Camp Steward. Afternoons are action-packed with off-campus fi eld trips or in-house visits from local entertainers.

SpartaCare:Let’s Do LunchDoes your child need lunch before or after a camp or class? Your camper can bring his or her own lunch, and super-vision will be provided between 12 – 1 p.m. in the Lower School Dining Commons. Steward staff members will escort campers to/from the buildings between camps and lunch.

The program is available for campers who are enrolled in a Summer Experience camp during the week they are registered for SpartaCare. Supervision will be provided as late as 5:30 p.m. Steward staff members will pick up campers from classes and camps and escort them to SpartaCare.

Academic CampsExcellent adventures await our youngest campers. Whether they are honing their � ne motor skills or getting acclimated for the upcoming school year, these camps are designed to exercise the young body and mind.

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and ToesThis camp will focus on strengthening the rising junior kindergartner’s fi ne and gross motor skills, incorporating music, movement, and multisensory activities using a variety of materials. This is a process-oriented class that will promote essential school readi-ness skills including cutting, gluing, tracing shapes, and much more. This camp is limited to eight campers.

Grade: JK Dates: July 29 – August 2Time: 9 – 11:30 a.m.Cost: $250

Rock, Scissors, PaperGet ready for some fun! The focus of this busy two-week program is to strengthen visual, fi ne motor, and general school-readiness skills. A wide variety of multimedia activities and interactive play will be incorporated daily. This camp is designed for child-ren who are entering kindergarten or fi rst grade in the fall. The program is staffed by a learning specialist/kindergarten teacher and a registered occupational therapist. Rock, Scissors, Paper is limited to ten students.

Parents of potential campers should speak with Charlene Wilton, Director of the Center for the Advancement of Learning, at 804-565-2314 before registering for this camp.

Kindergarten Discovery CampHere’s a fun way for children entering Steward’s kindergarten class to learn about school in a play-oriented environment. The week-long activities will help students feel comfortable in a new setting while being introduced to the routines of kindergarten. Children will explore campus, meet new classmates, and interact with faculty. This camp serves as a great way to welcome your child into The Steward School community.

Wonderful WordsThis exciting program led by Steward teachers Jay Parrish and Sabra Willhite is designed to immerse children in focused reading and writing activities. This two-week camp addresses the literacy needs of children at all levels of ability. Highlights of the camp will include opportunities to read books, recipes, craft directions, and poems; reading instruction designed to build decoding skills, fl uency, comprehension, and an understanding of how to choose appropriate reading material (“just right” books); writing instruction focused on the quality of storytelling and the mechanics of writing; and daily word work to build skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and handwriting. This camp specializes in individual, small-group, and whole-group instruction with a low teacher-to-child ratio.

Math Brains At WorkLed by Steward teacher Mary Ann Taylor, this one-week camp is fi lled with games and activities that will engage every child’s math brain! Whether your child struggles or soars with math, this camp is differentiated for various levels. The best way to learn and practice math is by using concrete materials, manipulatives, and real-life situations, and a fun, effective way to do this is through playing math games. At the end of the week, each camper will take home a folder full of learning games and manipulatives. First and second graders will get excited about math as they build skills and confi dence. Math brains are the best!

Step Up To SuccessThis two-week math and language camp will help ease your child’s transition from second to third or third to fourth grade. Taught by Steward third-grade teachers Nancy Loyd and Jane Whitely, this camp will present students with the math and language arts concepts that will help them become better readers, writers, and mathematical thinkers for the new school year. The curricu-lum includes practice of addition and subtraction facts or multiplication and division facts through the use of games, manipulatives, and art activities; development of problem-solving and logic strategies that will help with word problems; reading comprehension skills that will be introduced through award-winning literature and nonfi ction topics; and proofreading and editing skills in conjunction with writing activities.

The Math/Science BridgeSummer is not a time for your child to forget everything learned during the school year! Let them have fun and “bridge” the summer gap between May and September. This two-week math and science camp, taught by Steward teacher Ron Coles, is designed for rising fi fth and sixth graders. Students will review, refresh, and enrich math skills by emphasiz-ing basic operations, decimal/fraction relationships, and word problems. Science activities will focus on the fi ve steps of the scientifi c method in solving problems and conducting experiments. Students will also engage in hands-on activities that combine science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles in exciting experiments. They will use basic, everyday materi-als to design solutions for challenges and will have opportunities to visit the new Bryan Innovation Lab.

Middle School Language ArtsThis camp, led by Middle School English teacher Margaret Maclin, is designed specifi cally for Middle School students. The session provides fi ve full days of enrichment in reading, writing, vocabulary development, research methods, and study skills. Each day, students will enjoy a wide variety of hands-on activi-ties including an Internet scavenger hunt, a vocabulary relay race, and the production of a camp newspaper to be published at the end of the session. During the camp, each student will learn the SQ3R method of active reading, complete a group research assignment with documentation, and fi nish one of the books required for summer reading. This camp is strongly recommended for students who desire a structured time for daily reading, completion of at least one required summer reading book, and/or who will be new to Steward in the fall.

Preparing for High School Writing and ReadingDuring this class, students will focus on academic, formula writing. In addition to completing several fi ve-paragraph essays, they will explore the writing process, complete multiple drafts of their writing, and learn the skills of editing and revising. Basic mechanical, grammatical, and usage rules will be reviewed. This class is intended for beginning writing students, those who need extra help with their writing, or those new to the Steward Upper School. Students will also have the opportunity to work on summer reading and will be given strategies to become better active readers.

TutoringGain Skills and Confi dence in Core Skills!

The summer months are an optimal time to strengthen academic weak-nesses and to maintain the skills taught during the school year. Qualifi ed tutors from the Center for Advancement of Learning (CAL) provide individualized instruction in one-on-one sessions to remediate diffi culties in the core areas of reading, writing, math, or foreign language. Organization and study skills development are stressed during the tutoring sessions. Parents will receive a written report from the child’s tutor upon completion of the sessions. Tutors are available to work with students from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

Note: All required tutoring must be completed by August 16, 2013.

Creative ComputingScratch is a simple drag-and-drop programming language developed at MIT. The Scratch curriculum is designed to engage students in creative computing and give them opportunities to develop computational thinking skills. Steward’s Technology Coordinator Robin Ricketts will guide campers in using Scratch to create anima-tion, video games, digital stories, and music. Campers will also have the chance to use programs such as WeDo Robotics and MaKey MaKey circuit boards.

Art Campswith Young Rembrandts

Animals of the World Drawing WorkshopAn exciting workshop for artists who love animals! This adventure will take the campers to different continents and habitats all over the globe. Using various drawing tools, artists will learn tips and techniques to bring each creature to life. We will even spend time learning to create animals using cartooning skills. From fur and tails to feathers and scales, this workshop is sure to excite the animal enthusiast!

The Landscape and Still Life in PastelLooking for an art class full of creative energy? This is it! During this week-long program, young artists will explore the exciting medium of chalk pastel while creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Students will learn about design, composition, lighting, and color as they produce beauti-ful landscapes and interesting still life masterpieces. Every day we will produce poster-size pastel works of art suitable for displaying throughout your home!

Catching Some Air – Wings, Wheels, and MoreDuring this workshop, we will explore all things that catch air in a variety of media. For every artist who loves planes, bugs, birds, roller-blading, skateboarding, and more, this new program is a perfect fi t. What else catches air? Bats, spaceships, grass-hoppers, bicycles, dragonfl ies, jets—the sky is the limit!

Summer Vacation . . . Let the Adventures BeginSummer may be hot and humid, but this workshop will be cool and creative! Pack your bags, load your car, take fl ight, and join us for an amazing ’round-the-world vacation! We will take in the sights of major cities, visiting London, China, France, and Korea, and create landmarks from each location. We fi nish our adventure with a virtual stop at a favorite amusement park where we will draw an awesome poster of a cool roller-coaster. We will also spend time drawing funny cartoons related to our vacation adventures.

Drawing Classes for Kids – Beginner to IntermediateFor every young artist who loves to draw, this week will be chock-full of unique subjects. Students will learn about the concepts of line, shape, form, value, pattern, and composition. Medieval Castles . . . Art from Long AgoInspired by majestic castles around the world, this awesome workshop will give every child the chance to create amazing art! Our journey through medieval times will include dragons, knights, princesses, and more. Artists will learn to draw a variety of characters and items from this era such as knights in armor, jesters juggling, jousters, and catapults. Two of the projects will be large posters—one of a fi ery dragon and another of a large castle and moat. Boys and girls alike will enjoy this exciting workshop fi lled with adventure from long ago!

Arts and CraftsIt’s summertime and that means summer crafts! Campers will create several summery projects during a week of craft camp. Ready, Set, Drum!Campers will join Steward’s master drummer, John McAlister, as they take a musical journey through the world of drums. Students will have the opportunity to explore various types of drumming, beginning with basic snare drum techniques and progress-ing to application on the drum set. Areas covered will include drum circle, basic reading skills, and rudiments. With a solid foundation in the basics, campers will then progress to the drum set where they’ll cover grooves such as rock, jazz, blues, and Latin. They will even have the chance to get hands-on experience as they build their own instruments. Students will perform for family and friends at the end of the week. No prior musical experience is necessary.

A week with Virginia Fishing Adventures offers campers the opportunity to learn beginner and intermediate tactics for freshwater fi shing in nearby private ponds and rivers. We have access to some excellent private waters where campers are assured success. Our camper-to-counselor ratio is 4-to-1 to allow for personal instructional time each day. Campers may also earn their fi shing merit badges through this program.

Safety is our number one priority, so campers will wear lifejackets when in the water or on boats. Virginia Fishing Adventures provides all bait and tackle, rods and reels, lifejackets, and good times. No experience necessary.

Nature Camp for Preschoolers We are pleased to offer our fi rst parent-and-child summer camp for preschoolers (we ask that parents accompany their children every day). In this camp, we will explore garden-ing, the origin of food, and how we can take care of the earth through games, cooking, crafts, and even yoga. Yoga will be taught by a certifi ed instructor. CSI: Steward Edition From the observational skills of Sherlock Holmes to the cyber-espionage techniques of Homeland Security, come learn all about the “cool” factor of the fi eld of forensic science. Students will learn how to collect and examine evidence left behind at crime scenes, from fi nger-prints to hair fi bers, and use scientifi c equipment including computer analysis, microscopes, and a real polygraph (lie detector) test.

Campers will be summoned to a staged crime scene to participate in fact fi nding and evidence gathering in the hope of solving the crime. Through biology, chemistry, mathematics, and deductive reasoning, they will work with fellow campers to weigh the evidence and apply their fi ndings in the quest for the culprit. A fi eld trip to the State Consolidated Crime Lab in the Virginia Biotechnology Park is included in this week. Results of the investigation will be shared in a public forum for friends and family on Friday.

Science Gets Wet and Dirty: Exploring Connections to our Local Water Systems Where does our water come from and where does it go? This class will explore water quality and the local watershed. Expect to be outside, even in the rain! We will collect and identify insects and analyze water samples from different ponds,

streams, and rivers. We will use Probe technology to collect and transfer data. The data collected will be shared with students doing similar research in other countries. Students will gain an appreciation of our natural world and have a better understanding of how science uses technology to expand our knowledge of its complexities.

Spartan Advanced Basketball Skills Clinic for Middle SchoolersIs your middle schooler motivated to take his or her game to the next level? Run by former Division I Player Adam Lonon, this intense clinic is anything but your ordinary summer camp. The clinic is for serious basketball players looking to elevate their game. Comprised of two-hour grueling segments, advanced workouts stress the fundamental elements of the game. Through game simulation drills, players are able to incorporate and apply learned concepts into their overall play. Many summer camps will tell you the “how” behind a drill, but never explain the “why.” Adam Lonon’s Spartan Advanced Skills Clinic breaks down each drill allowing athletes to develop a clear understanding of how to use these concepts in a game.

Tennis and Volleyball This exciting week-long camp combines tennis and volleyball for beginning and intermediate players. Campers will learn tennis fundamentals including how to serve, return volley with a strong forehand or backhand, and strategy. Instruction will include scoring from “love” to “game, set, and match.” Steward’s PE coach Bonny Hajek will work with campers on volleyball basics, including how to serve, pass, dig, set, block, spike, and how to score and offi ciate. K&L SportsFor an all-day adventure, look no further than the week-long camps at K&L Sports! Steward Tennis Coach Kurt Hammerschmidt and his family run this incredible camp from their home in Montpelier. Camp activities include tennis, basketball, baseball, beach volleyball, horseshoes, swim-ming, football, soccer, whiffl eball, dodgeball, kickball, frisbee, hiking, and other fi eld and team games. At K&L Sports Camp, your child will fi nd that sportsmanship and team camaraderie are just as important as skill level and self-confi dence. The directors main-tain a 6-to-1 student-to-pro ratio, which guarantees an extensive and intensive workout during the course of the camp.

The camp tuition includes a t-shirt, a pizza party on Friday, and lots of daily and end-of-camp prizes. Every Friday, there is a skills test competition when the students are “tested” individually on all the sports that were part of the camp. Sessions are limited to 30 campers.

Bob Foley Next Level BasketballNext Level Basketball camp is designed to teach all aspects of the game. Chess Camp This summer, USA Chess is offering a fun and entertaining chess camp at The Steward School. USA Chess is the largest and premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States. Their staff is comprised of the fi nest children’s chess instructors in North America. Registration options include mornings, afternoons, and all-day sessions. Introductory Video Game Creation Starting with basic commands, campers will be taught in step-by-step progression how to build a game that they design. Camp begins with an introduction to GameMaker software and includes adding rooms, building walls, adding backgrounds, warping to new levels, music, sound effects, and many other techniques. The fi rst few days focus on program-ming basics, and by the end of the week the children will be constructing their own unique game. At the end of camp, each child is provided access to our custom download site from which they can download GameMaker LITE software, their own games, and our custom walk-through guide and re-source folder. Campers can continue to develop their game and create new ones at home.

Video Game Creation: The SequelIn the spirit of Mario, Sonic, and other legendary video game characters comes our newest class! Campers use GameMaker software to create a side-scrolling, platform game with running, jumping, falling, climb-ing, blasting, and enemy stomping. Students will learn how to program the real-world concepts of gravity and friction as well as how to plot out head-scratching mazes for other gamers to solve. Actual programming techniques will be used to create

power-ups and saved-game data during the journey. Each student’s game will be a unique adventure programmed entirely by him or her! Additionally, campers will receive access to our custom download site featuring thousands of games.

Animation CreationUsing Scratch software developed by MIT, participants are guided step-by-step through the basics while creating their own 3-D animated story with a focus on fun. Campers will select from a gallery of animated characters called sprites. They will teach sprites to walk, run, dance, turn around, and respond to keyboard input. Students will learn to change backgrounds, add music, play catch, and other cool features. Throughout this course, they will learn basic programming techniques while broadening imagina-tion and creativity skills. After the completion of camp, participants can install the software and story from our custom download site for further development or simply to show off!

Advanced Video Creation: Mobile Apps Students will use GameMaker Studio to create a cell phone/tablet video game in the style of “Doodle Jump” that they can play on Smartphones, iPads, iPhones, Kindles, and other tablets. Campers will be taught how to create characters, make them move by tilting the phone, jump between platforms, manipulate objects by touching the screen, and much more. The students will create different levels, a high-score table, and enemies and will learn how to get games onto various devices.

In addition, Christen has been coaching teams throughout Richmond for several years including Geronimo lacrosse, Tally Ho hockey, Collegiate School, and Overtime Athletics.

As a chef for Meriwether Godsey in Steward’s dining services, Anton spends his days meeting the culinary needs of teenagers, so he is a survivor of the ultimate food challenge! With a degree from Chicago’s School of Culinary Arts and years of experience as an executive chef at clubs and resorts, he will provide a fresh food perspective and open up a whole new world in the kitchen for his campers. Kurt is Steward’s varsity tennis coach and a four-time All-American in tennis at Ferris State University and winner of the university’s fi rst-ever NCAA Championship in 1989. Before creating K & L Sports with his wife Lisa, he was the Head Tennis Professional and Director of Junior Tennis at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

During college, Erin was the goalie for VCU’s team, and she is now the co-founder of Priority Goalkeeping. We are lucky to have an all-around sportsman in EJ. He is a PE teacher at Steward, as well as a soccer and basketball coach. Sign Me Up!To participate in a Summer Experience camp or class, we must have a completed registration and medical form for each camper. Please register online by visiting www.stewardschool.org/summer, or complete the paper registration form in this brochure.

Camp Policies

Registration and Confi rmation

Registration for the Summer Experi-ence begins on February 1, 2013. Camps and class sizes are limited, so be sure to register early to reserve your space. All registration fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Registrations will not be processed without payment.

A confi rmation email will be sent to all campers’ parents/guardians upon receipt of registration. An informational letter including drop-off and pick-up locations, supply lists (if necessary), and other pertinent information will be sent to campers along with the confi rmation email. Please keep your receipt. For additional or specifi c information, please contact Summer Experience staff at the emails listed in our Resident Expert section.

Cancellation of Classes

There are minimum class sizes for all camps and programs. The Steward School reserves the right to cancel any course, program, or activity as necessary. In such cases, a full refund will be made. Tuition is refundable only if The Steward School cancels a course or program. No refunds will be made for individuals who are asked to leave a camp or program because of behavior. No refunds are given for academic camps for any reason other than cancellation by The Steward School.

Allergies and Medications

Important notice to parents of campers with allergies: The Steward School camps are NOT peanut, wheat, dairy, or allergen free. We make every reasonable accommodation for campers with allergies. If your child is allergic to certain foods, we ask that you provide a snack each day.

If your child is in a camp where cooking or food preparation is part of the curriculum, please discuss your child’s dietary needs with the teacher. Children who require the use of an Epi-pen for life-threat-ening emergencies will be asked to keep their Epi-pen with them at all times (a small backpack or fanny pack works well). Our license from the Department of Social Services does not permit us to distribute medications of any kind. However, most camp counselors and coaches are trained in CPR and fi rst aid.

Photographs

Unless we have a written letter to the contrary, The Steward School exercises the right to use any photographs taken of individuals participating in the Summer Experi-ence in its promotional publications.

Fees for all Summer Experience programs must be paid in full at the time of registration.
