Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection

General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet

roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first

• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

• BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation

• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to use only WOOLSAFE- approvedproducts. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.

Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch producesbetween 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipeused by the dyer remains constant, and isfollowed to the letter, in each separateproduction the colour reproduction will varyfrom batch to batch. However production ismatched back to the original or mastersample to ensure that the colour remains‘within a commercial tolerance’.This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professionaljudgement of the head dyer based on his/herexperience. A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensureperfect colour matching it is advisable that asingle width be used in any installationrequiring exact colour matching.N.B. Carpets which are laid with the piletravelling in different directions, even thoughthey be from the same batch will appear notto match. For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers maynot be from the same batch as currentproduction and therefore should be used as aguide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, whichis created during production when spun yarnis cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall ontothe surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibreis only a small fraction of the total fibrecontained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuouspile is pulled through the primary backing ofthe carpet. This is usually due to some localcondition, possibly some sharp object whichhas caught in a loop in situ and has resultedin a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with bytrimming the offending end level with therest of the pile. They should not be left as thiscould result in further loops being pulled anddeveloping into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work itsway to the surface and stand proud of the restof the pile. This is probably due to one end ofthe tuft being longer than the other i.e. Jshaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedialaction merely requires that the offending tuftsbe scissor trimmed level with the rest of thepile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpethas become crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation oflight and dark patches on the carpet. This willoccur on all pile fabrics but can be morenoticeable on plainer carpets because theshadows created by pile pressure will not bedisguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have thecapacity to store it. Static is caused by thebuild up of static electricity upon personnelin a dry environment and is discharged whena person makes contact with an object whichcan conduct electricity (i.e. door handle orfiling cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensitydepending upon the individual, air humidityand the contact materials. Static is moreusually associated with synthetic materials asthey do not retain moisture very well but itcan and does occur with wool in very dryroom conditions.Preventative measures include theintroduction of moisture into the room or insitu carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade inuse. The degree of fade can vary dependingon the colour chosen and the local conditionsto which the carpet is subjected.Fading can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light which is found in daylight, but isaccelerated when sunlight shines directlyonto the carpet. This has the effect oflightening or “Bleaching” the colour just asexposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposedto such conditions just as you would protectother furniture or fabrics.A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or napof the carpet changes direction and thusreflects light at different angles showing theeffects of shading which can becomepermanent. It is also described as‘watermarking’. This can happen to everycarpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indianor even Coir Matting. Like shading it can bemore apparent on plain carpet because heavypatterns can disguise the effects. It can occurquite quickly after installation. A tremendousamount of research has been carried out overmany years by many institutes to determinethe cause of this phenomenon but none of ithas proved conclusive. There is no commonlyknown manufacturing process which cancause or cure this phenomenon and thereforeit is not a manufacturing fault. For furtherinformation please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy pointload, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not toindent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile torecover. In the case of very heavy loads inplace for a considerable time, the recoverytime can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only thepile of the carpet that becomes indented. theunderlay will also indent and the backing ofthe carpet may also distort into theindentation in the underlay. Some underlay’swill recover well and some less welldepending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.The use of cups below furniture legs canspread the load and the net result is a largerarea of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939and many manufacturers will have data onthis aspect of carpet performance. In this testthe carpet is loaded for 24 hours and thedegree of recovery is measured after 1 hourand 24 hours. Since there are so manydifferent underlay’s however, it is very rarefor the recovery from a heavy static load to beevaluated on carpet and underlay.Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaningwith a rotating brush machine) will speed uprecovery but in the case of seriousindentations the use of an iron and damp clothor a steam iron together with a blunt darningneedle to carefully tease up the pile can bebeneficial. Care must be take not to over wetthe carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of trafficwhich eventually flattens the pile particularlyin the main areas of use. All pile fabrics willflatten to greater or lesser degree dependanton the amount of traffic to which it issubjected and the construction (tuftdensity/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some localcondition to which the carpet has beensubjected to, or maintenance, or lack ofmaintenance programme. There is nothing weas manufacturers can do to prevent soiling inuse. There are several types of soiling whichare quite common:Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave astain. In such instances, professional helpshould be sought.Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leavesticky soap residues in the fibres which canresult in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from theobvious soiled edges, at gaping skirtingboards for instance, dark lines appearing onsurface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards.Sometimes the shape of floorboards can beseen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimesshows itself as spots on the carpet, this is dueto the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both inthe underlay and the carpet, leaving dustdeposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paperis essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advisethe consumer when the carpet is measured ofany poorly fitting doors, skirtings, orfloorboards and the consumers responsibilityto ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if aresulting complaint is to be avoided.

INSTALLATIONSWe recommend that all carpets are laid inaccordance with BS5325:2001 (a copy of whichcan be obtained from your library or HMSO)or as per National Institute of Carpet Fittersinstallation manual (Tel 0115 958 3077) forfurther information.

Flooring factsheet

TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.

LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes threeloop heights to create informal, random textures which are veryforgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for hightraffic areas and busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all havea level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing

as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat

weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a

wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Carpet types

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile ¥ Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired

Celtic castle inspires Irish plaid

Display that dazzles

A traditional Irish plaid with an original rustic feel,Abbeyglen from Brintons takes its name from one of Ireland’s most magnificent

castles located on the romantic Celtic west coast.

Warm and welcoming, these five sumptuous plaids celebrate distinctive Irishtartan design, with each of the individual patterns staying true to the named

counties of; Cavan, Fermanagh, Leitrim,Tyrone and Wexford. Each plaid featurescolours that naturally endow the collection with a rich organic quality.

Abbeyglen plaids are woven to produce a unique ground that simulates ahandcrafted texture, creating a sumptuous and luxurious appearance.Created in colours which reflect the delicate shades of Ireland’s soft

vegetable colours of old.

The plaids work wonderfully on their own or running alongside complementaryplain colours creating a luxurious and harmonious living space.

Abbeyglen is a woven axminster, 80% wool and 20% nylon, available in both4.00m and 1.00m widths.

VoiceOF THE TRADE

“Geert Vanden BosscheAge: 47 Job Title: Marketing Director BaltaYears with present company: 25Years in flooring industry: 25Main non-work interests: football & movies

“How would you describe current marketsconditions now, compared to a year ago?

It won't be a surprise that current market conditions arevery difficult for all Belgian carpet mills and other. The UKmarket is our largest export market and consumption isdown. We are witnessing a survival of the fittest. I'mconfident there are opportunities for a company like Balta inthese difficult times.

When do you expect an upturn in the economygenerally?

We believe 2009 still to be a difficult year with hopefully astart of improvement by the end of this year. We need tochange peoples minds and create a feeling of optimism again,as this crisis is also a psychological one.

What's the key market issue/challenge today?

We need to be very flexible and adapt to ever changingmarket conditions. Flexible in our production to cope withhigh fluctuations in demand ensuring the best possibleservice.

What’s the single most important key to successin flooring?

That's an easy one: product, product and again product! Inthese difficult times we are stepping up our efforts inproduct development. This allows us to bring products to the market with the best quality/price ratio to suit currentdemand. We are now taking market share to be in the bestpossible position when the economy picks up again.

Who has been your biggest influence in business?

I have the pleasure of working with our UK sales directorDuncan Buchanan for many, many years now The drive hestill has, even at his age, is an example for many andmotivates me and my colleagues to give back the best wehave in us. I think he will continue for ever.

“It’s not all doom and gloom. It’s an exciting business”

If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?

To communicate more the many benefits of broadloomcarpet in the stores. Use the tools that we offer or theinspiration and support that the Fun on the Floor campaignprovides.

What has changed most in the last 5-10 years?

Communication probably. Years ago when you left on abusiness trip you disappeared for a couple of days with inbest case a fax number of the hotel where you wereplanning to stay. Now, with our Blackberry, you areexpected to be online 24 hours a day. It is very practical, nodoubt, but it never stops!

What was your first job in flooring?

I started working for Balta in '84. I have worked in productdevelopment for many years. I was trained by experiencedpeople and it was a very good school which allowed me tounderstand everything there is to know about carpets.Thelast 10 years I've been in charge of marketing for both BaltaBroadloom and the Balta Group.

Would you advise a member of your family tocome into the flooring industry?

I definitely would. It is not all doom and gloom. It's anexciting business, which allowed me to see the world anddevelop myself. The nicest thing is that when you are in thebusiness as long as I have been, anywhere you go, you meet alot of people you know. Some of them are real charactersthough!

What's the oddest thing that's ever happened toyou in the trade?

Probably a night out in Blackpool with some of our UK reps.Impossible to go into more detail I'm afraid!

Earth, wind and fibreNature is at the very centre of colour forecasts for 2010 – seeing anextension of trends already established over the past couple of years.

Wools of New Zealand are a leading international authority oncolour and their Colour Forecast is eagerly anticipated by theflooring industry to help guide design decisions in the year ahead.

The organisation’s colour expert Joanna Ramsden noted that theeconomic downturn meant movement in colour development wasmore restrained but the naturals trend was proving to be highlycommercial for manufacturers.

“Nature continues to dominate the palette in our Colour Forecast, underlining trends already signalled for 2009” she says. “A host ofnew shades associated with the earth’s natural habitats has extendedthe palette of hues.”

Wools of New Zealand have produced a ‘Colourscape’ for 2010with 89 organic colours.

The influence of cool greys remains strong and complements thenew warm soft neutrals, the ecological greens and rich, dark tones. The introduction of 10 bright accents, including black and white, offers designers a wealth of interesting colour combinations for newcarpet and rug ranges to co-ordinate with the very latest interiordécor trends.

The Palette‘Barely there’ pastels, frozen naturals and powdered minerals morphinto meteorological-inspired tones of stormy greys, teals and midnightblues. Fresh vegetable greens blend into herbal shades of olive. Oldand mellowed golds diffuse into warm aromatic spice tones ofcinnamon, saffron and burnt orange.

Nostalgic and romantic hues of faded rose and mulberry areinterspersed with rich shades of wild berries, plums and violet.Sumptuous tones of coffee, caramel, cocoa and melted chocolateblend with soft warm naturals.

Vibrant and energising bright accents, to be used in a controlledmanner, add a touch of zest and bring the palette to life.

Black and white are introduced to enhance fashion opportunities.

InspirationWools of New Zealand have worked with the Scottish ultra-naturallandscape artist James Wheeler to demonstrate the synergy withnature and his mellow works are used around the presentation ofthe Colourscape palette.

James knows a thing or two about carpet having left art college forthe design department of Firth Carpets where he carved out a highlysuccessful career to become one of the industry’s leading designers.

Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert, has developed an SPF12 protectionoil for exterior wood (sun protection factor)! The company says its brand new UV-Protection-Oil offers 12 times the UV protection in comparison to untreated wood.

Designed to protect, maintain and restore all types of wood from the effects of theenvironment, UV-Protection-Oil ensures a professional finish that will enhance and protectall types of wood for many years to come.

“We are all familiar with the damaging effect that the weather can have on wood,” saysSteve Grimwood, MD of Osmo UK. “Whether it is wood cracking and peeling or fading togrey as a result of the harmful effect of the sun, wooden doors and windows constantlyseem to require freshening-up - it is an ongoing problem. We’ve developed UV-Protection-Oil to address this issue, and we’ve done this by integrating clear UV protection into an oil-based pigment-free finish which ensures the natural appearance of the wood is maintained. It really does limit the greying process!”

Osmo UV Protection Oil is a satin-matt, clear finish designed for interior and exteriorapplication. As well as protecting the wood surface it can also enhance the natural look ofthe wood. Based on natural oil, it does not crack, flake, peel or blister. It is moistureregulating and reduces swelling and shrinking of the wood. This product is particularlysuitable for oak windows, residential and commercial doors and overcomes the need for aheavy stain or a flaking varnish to keep them looking natural.

An upbeat downturn at Domotex by David Spragg

FLOORING’S FASHION SHOW

“This is our catwalk,” says Darren Clanford of Ryalux describing thecrowded aisles at Domotex last month. Carpet as fashion is making acomeback and the brighter colours of the Hannover event lightenedthe economic gloom.

But prowling the catwalk were some tigers and some tabbies – astark difference between the flooring companies that are going allout to gain market share and those firms who are hunkering downand waiting for the recession to end – in the hope that it does andthey don’t.

The Hannover show is the European floorcovering industry’s biggestevent and attracted a record number of 1,394 exhibitors thoughmany had no doubt booked before the worst was known.Organisers admitted visitor numbers were down for the first time inyears but the turnstiles still counted 38,000 attendees.

The European flooring industry is always reassuringly innovative andenthusiastic and this year was no exception - but optimism was amore rare commodity. It was only January, but the consensus can’twait for the year to be over.

The UK viewed from Europe is an unhappy island with lower demand andan adverse exchange rate for importers. A couple of European-based repswere shocked by the unremittingly gloomy press reports they enduredwhen they had visited the UK in recent months. ‘No wonder no-one inBritain wants to buy anything’, said one.

“Trading conditions are miserable and anyone who tells you they are doingOK is being less than honest,” said the head of one of the leadingimporters into the UK.

Rumours were rife that some major buying groups were not visiting theevent due to corporate restrictions on travel – the Argos interiors teamwas allegedly one victim of this new curse.

But the tigers are taking up the challenge and it was remarkable how manyDomotex exhibitors launched record numbers of new ranges at the show.

Balta, for example showed 93 ranges of which 60% were new or re-coloured. “We are positive and not interested in pessimism,” said GeertVanden Bossche. “Now is the time to take market share.”

The renaissance of Ryalux andBurmatex is a joy to beholdand designer Darren Clanfordrelishes the challenge ofexceeding the high expectationsthat the industry now has of thiscreative company. “We like tohave fun and we love the waypeople enjoy and appreciate ourdesigns”’ says Darren. “We’ve gotto get carpet off the commoditylist to become a more thoughtfulpurchase”.The company’sspectacular stand took the themeof ‘accessible sophistication’ andexplored layers of soft-on-softcarpet textures in muted primarycolours.

The judges were impressed.Thecompany received an award for‘best colouration’ at the show.

Asiatic’s appearance in Hannover was a triumph of texture and colour withthe debut of 60 new designs in their Modern Acrylics range which will be seenin the UK with the launch of their Spring Collection. Multi-textures approachesincluded innovations in superb designs with faux-suede (pictured in the newLaya range) while geometrics and bright florals are likely to continue to sellstrongly in the new designs – including the updated items in the popularHarlequin range.

Tisca Tiara seeks to benefit from the resilience of the quality end of themarket and the UK’s unshakeable trust in wool. “Top end wool is sellingstrongly – people find comfort in the timeless elegance and unrivalled quality,”say Alan Jones-Bratt (pictured below), their man in the UK.The company’sMerino Super is a consistent good seller and the superb wiltons Pave, Sienna,Classic and Caprice do well. “You cannot stand still, says Alan Russell of Louis de Poortere.“We’re trying harder and taking more risks with ideas and colour toattract customers.” Edel Telenzo said they were “investing in thedownturn” and brought 33 new ranges to the show.

Balterio’s Franky Terrijn said: “There’s only one option. You have to faceforward and we are very confident…” before adding… “in 2010.”

There are rays of hope. There was general agreement that higherend consumers still had money and were spending it. Also that therecession was forcing homeowners to stay put and they weretherefore more inclined to invest more in their homes.

And an interesting theme to emerge in these hard pressed timeswas the importance on investing in service to help retailers achievemore – including new emphasis on cut length supply to improveretailers cashflow.

Jeremy Nichols at Asiatic brought 60 new rug designs to the showand said: “Now it’s all about service and support and keeping theproduct range fresh.”

UK-based Asiatic and Ryalux are exceptional amongst a very smallband of UK participants in the event – despite the exportopportunities that the weaker pound should create.

Ivan Dekeyser, International Sales Director at Burmatex, commentedat the end of last year that the UK was too cautious and inward-looking. “Exporting isn’t easy but there are great opportunities forBritish firms,” he said.

But only a handful made it across the channel – just 30 exhibitorsled amongst an international total of 1,394. All reported goodbusiness with strong enquiries from Poland and Hungary plusAustralian and US visitors.

British Wool was flying the flag and reporting healthylevels of interest from European and American visitors.Thestand was showcasing Shades of Nature – a presentationdesigned to bring the environmental benefits of 100%natural tufted carpet yarns to the widest possible audience. The collection features nine breed types and three blendedyarns. “We know the eco agenda is gaining pace and ourpresentation is about enabling people to understand thepotential of using a particular breed or type of wool in theirproducts,” said British Wool’s Richard Poole.

The 33 new ranges that Edel Telenzo brought to Hannover underlinedthe company’s claim to be “investing in the downturn”. A star performer isthe stripey Tube collection and a stylish designer monochrome Xpress rangehas been added to Piccadilly, Mainline and Jubilee to further enhance thesuccess of this highly attractive low-level loop. In the popular Londoncollection, the popular textured Greenwich 50/50 quality has been re-coloured and ribbed Windsor replaces Richmond with five new muted, stoney shades.

It’s going to be an interesting year for Interfloor with the launch of the newcombined catalogue that represents the integration of the Stikatak business, acquired by the company almost a year ago. “We been working hard on theproduct range and the combined catalogue fills every gap,” says Paul Marsh. While underlay is still a core business, there will be more focus on accessoriesand Interfloor have introduced a new selection of nosings and metals, extendedthe gripper range and re-launched its adhesives.

this highly exclusive range of 100% New Zealand wool woven carpetsand demonstrates a breadth of choice that has been carefully chosen for

British tastes including classic and contemporary designs and a range of textures.

STYLES AND TRENDS

Although the economics were unavoidable, fashion was also tothe fore at Domotex with a real buzz of colour, texture anddesign innovation.

While beige isn’t exactly on the back burner, manufacturersreport a distinct move towards colour and much of the runninghere is being made by a new trend towards muted shades.Consumers appear to find faded colours less threatening andmore acceptable and limey greens, oranges, purples and soft richreds are doing well in this spectrum.

The perceived wisdom, increasingly repeated by sales people isthat consumers are anticipating staying longer in their homes andare moving towards expressing their personality in colour –rather than the bland beige backdrops that estate agents favour.

“There is a stronger sense of ownership in people’s homes and Ithink they are going to be braver in the colours and textures theychoose to live with”, said Darren Clanford of Ryalux.

Wools of New Zealand designer Joanna Ramsden said: “Theeconomic climate means there hasn’t been much movement incolour trends but there is still interest in colour among consumers.Retailers are being a little more creative and there’s a need forthem to create uplifting displays that respond to that trend.”

Joanna is one of the industry’s most colour-conscious players andreported that a wider range of greens was making it to market, including a return to sage, and there was increasing tonality in thechoice of greys and graphites.

The organisation’s colour forecast is reported in depth on page35 of this magazine.

Emerging from the strong run that black has had in recent years, subtler shades of grey are doing well and many manufacturerscited silver as an increasingly popular – and practical – choice.

Jeremy Nichols of the UK’s Asiatic rug business showed TheStocklists around his ‘extreme shaggies’ where almost anythinggoes – and everything sells – from shiny metallics and lurex tobig, big multi-height piles.

Textures is almost the new colour. Manufacturers have been busyforcing fibre and yarn combinations into ever more interestingand complex arrangements. Multi-height and mixed constructionproducts are working well in a market where consumers appearmore confident to experiment with texture maybe than colour.

Light and shadow effects are being given more attention, both interm of the structure of carpets and the mix of matt and glossy fibres.

continued overleaf...

Page 46: The Stocklists February 2009

The theme was taken in the floorforum – the annualDomotex showcase of design which is worth the trip toHannover alone. The flooring industry’s top designer,Amsterdam-based Ulf Moritz, had charge again andexpressed texture in a forest display of carpet hungvertically between rough-cut timber.

Away from textiles, vinyl, wood and laminatemanufacturers report a move away from the mid-tonesfor wood-effect designs with increasingly attractive optionsin bleached and white effects and less heavy darker tones.

In the UK, it’s still any colour so long as it’s oak – but theconventional colours are less strong even in this mostconservative market.

Once you have emulated wood to a degree of precisionthat its difficult to comprehend, you wonder where elsethe laminates and vinyls have to go – but they do and theconstant level of innovation is always impressive in thissector. Balerio’s latest 24cm wide laminate plank is a fineexample.

With vinyl, designs are getting more adventurous aroundthe edges of the top ceramic and wood-effect sellers butthe obsession with slip resistence has led to more heavyuse of matt finishes with the result that even some of themore exciting effects look a little dull.

Domotex 2010 has already been posted for January 16-19 and for most of us next year can’t come soon enough– we just hope as many people can still afford to makethe trip!

DOMOTEX 2009DOMOTEX 2009DOMOTEX 2009DOMOTEX 2009DOMOTEX 2009

Yarn innovation is central to the campaign by Wools ofNew Zealand to inspire the industry to develop new andappealing products, often in unusual ways.Working with sixspinners in Europe, New Zealand and Japan, a range of woolyarn blends with acrylics, bamboo, metallics and other fibres arewoven into new designs. One of the most striking was theCoco Chanel themes, pictured with Joanna Ramsden. “Carpetshould be more fashionable and we aim to give some directionto colour and pattern,” says Joanna.

Vorwerk’s Ian Hammondsays: “The time is right for

quality synthetic carpet and wewant to muscle in a little on

the higher-end wool market”.The company is setting out tobe more fashionable and plans

a proactive PR campaign. AtDomotex they demonstrated

some excellent new ideasincluding the launch of quality

In the ever-changing rugs sector, Brink & Campman canbe relied upon to innovate and inspire with top qualitycollections and Domotex was proving to be a successfulshowcase for the company. A pride of place was given to thestunning Himali Splendid quality, a hand-knotted rug of 100%Tibetan wool which is now stocked in a 1 x 3 metre runnersize as well as a selection of rug shapes. ‘A quality design likethis in the hall and coordinating with a rug in the lounge looksvery sophisticated”’ says B&C’s Jasper Kempers (above).

Designer Hilary Terry of Adam carpets has createda new range of striped carpets, which will bring thegrowing passion for stripes to the showroom withreal style.

Castlemead Velvet Stripe in British Wool offers fourdistinctive colour options, each one co-ordinatingwith four colours from the well-establishedCastlemead Twist range of plain carpets.

The clever colour and narrow/wide stripecombinations bring together black with grey andmuted browns in one design and black with muteddarker and lighter beiges in another. Introducing redwith black and brown shades in to the theme thesethree designs offer a very stylish and cosmopolitancolour scheme, which would be suited to a numberof different looks. Finally, the more subtle cream, fawn and turquoise stripe is bound to be a winnerwith the consumer that wants natural shades butsomething a little different.

"This design impact range has been very wellreceived by buyers and retailers and is in tune withcurrent trends for stripes in the home particularlywhen used with co-ordinate plain carpet ranges."Said Tony Hardwick, Sales Director of AdamCarpets Ltd.

Colour it seems was really on the cards at Domotex 2009. Manufacturers were promoting rich plumsand dark berry shades and whilst these have often been token gestures to make the ranges look moreinteresting, manufacturers said that key buyers are asking for these shades now.

Pattern and particularly stripes is also more evident in carpet with some manufacturers offering printedpattern on wool carpet. Dramatic pattern on rugs was also everywhere and in plain ranges there weresome truly fantastic undulating tufted rugs using different lengths of yarn to create a robust wave effect.

Green issues andrecycling of finishedproduct is now verydefinitely on themanufacturer’s agenda –with major USmanufacturers likeMohawk blazing an eco-trail for thesynthetic market. However, wool as asustainable product witha natural lineage hasmany eco-advantagescontinues to need moredefined eco-promotionby manufacturers.

Colour beckons and ‘green’ grows

The British Wool team was at Domotex 2009 to help promote British Wool and support the widerBritish textile industry.

The BWMB stand operated as a business centre and offered meeting facilities to British Wool partnersincluding wool merchants and spinners and members of the manufacturing licensee scheme.

Richard Poole, European Business Manager at the BWMB has co-ordinated the British Wool activity atDomotex for the last three years and works closely with the carpet industry across Europe and thewider markets. “This show is the first major flooring event to come after the collapse of the globalmarket and therefore it was seen as a test of the current state of the industry.”

Whilst acknowledging that footfall was down, he felt that there was still significant footfall and it was clearthat business from major buyers was taking place. “The European manufacturers are feeling the effect ofthe Euro being so high as many do significant business in the UK. A number of bigger companies arebetter placed to ride the storm and while some had definitely consolidated – others had pushed theproduct development aspect to expand their ranges.”

The British Wool stand itself was continuously busy and was well used by the UK contingency. Themeeting tables were in constant use and the general feeling was that it provided a very useful platformfor broaching international business opportunities. “We felt that it offered a perfect solution for thosepeople who come to do business but do not have the need for a full stand on their own account.” SaidGreg Bedford of Calder Carpets.

From a flooring point ofview, this means that the trend for fitting out a home inneutral colours to appeal to potential buyers is steppingaside and instead, flooring that better reflects thepersonality of the occupants is at the top of the carpetagenda. In the private sanctuary of the bedroom, naturalsand beiges are being replaced by bolder, more excitingcolour choices, creating individual and uplifting interiors.

'Wool carpets in particular are ideal for bedrooms, as theyare soft, warm, inherently anti-static and flame retardant. What’s more, in this era of eco-sensitivity, wool has theadded appeal of being a natural and fully renewable resource.'

Bernard Coorevits, marketing manager for Lano Carpets, also said comfort was the main factor: 'With much timespent in socks or bare feet, texture is crucial and ourCorona brings the unmistakable pile of a Saxony texture, giving a sumptuous feel underfoot. Made from our stain-resistant Lanoset polypropylene, Corona comes in a morethan durable 40oz construction.'

Howard Lindsay, sales manager of The Mohawk Group, wasalso keen to emphasise that wool is not the only material ofchoice: 'While plain colours are an obvious choice for thebedroom, the discerning consumer looks towards raisingthe bar over plain twists with the introduction of morecomplex texture.Woodlawn brings this texture through aclassic trellis design in ribbons and flowers developedthrough a cut and loop construction that adds a subtle yeteffective extra dimension to an otherwise plain carpet.

'Available in 21 colours,Woodlawn is beautifullymanufactured from Stainmaster Xtra Life Tactesse nylon andfeatures a lifetime limited warranty, underlining its positionas a premium carpet for the most luxurious of bedrooms.'

Lesley Inman, UK operations manager for Edel TelenzoCarpets, asked: 'Why on earth would you put anythingelse but carpet in a bedroom? The cold snap we had inJanuary would have reminded everyone just howimportant it is to find the floor under your feet warm andcosy especially in the bedroom where you are most likelyto be bare footed!' Consumers can afford to choosesofter, deeper and cut pile twist options, she continued, stating that 100% wool is ideal. 'And if it’s a good quality, branded wool fibre, it should last for ages with propermaintenance, as well as allowing people to keep theirheating turned down a bit.'

Edel Telenzo recommends regular vacuuming with anupright, beater bar-type cleaner and regular airing, whileemphasising that carpet traps air-borne allergens ratherthan allowing them to circulate in the air. Inmanrecommends, from the Telenzo wool carpet ranges,Barbados, Nature Wool Select, Burford Bridge or BrisbaneExtra for the bedroom.

Steve Upperton, sales director of Axminster Carpets, wasanother to agree on the trend for comfort in thebedroom: 'Normally populated by plain styles, thebedroom enjoys occasional use so homeowners are freeto choose the lightest of shades to enhance the feeling ofluxury. The Devonia Plains collection is ideal for bedroomuse, particularly in the lighter 40oz weight and will give atruly luxurious feel underfoot in any of 60 shades.'

Brockway is another to offer a 100% wool range, combining wools from Norway and the Shetland Islandsthat are blended together to create soft, delicate tones. The result is the company's recently-launched Shetlandrange, which includes a choice of grey, fawn and creamcolourways in heathered effect in a 100% wool, 50ozcarpet available in eight colourways and 4m width.Thecompany's latest range further endorses its commitmentto supporting traditional British industries, as seen in itsLakeland Herdwick range. This is made from the wool ofthe Lake District's Herdwick sheep.

Ulster Carpets is also of the opinion that the currenteconomic climate is encouraging more consumers tomake their home more comfortable. It is thereforecontinuing to update its extensive range of products withthe latest colours and designs to provide them withoptions to match all interior design schemes.

Recent additions include Elements Wilton, a 100% wool, cut and loop, woven wilton, offering a contemporary yetsophisticated alternative to plain carpet. Ferndale, an80/20 woven axminster for those looking for a moreclassic choice of floor covering. Finally, Country HouseCollection, another 80/20 woven axminster, is comprisedof three elegant designs, presenting a versatile range ofindividual products or co-ordinating designs.

David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets, said: 'Escalating costs and an uncertain climate are forcingmany homeowners to stay put - and while many areclamping down on spending, they are still investing inhome basics - including new floorcoverings.

'From a consumer's point of view a new carpet instantlymakes a room feel more homely and it’s not an exerciselikely to break the bank either. To buy carpet for an averagesized 4m x 5m room priced at £21 per sq m would cost£420 + VAT - a lot less than some new flat screen TVs.'

Cormar's recently-launched Heavenly collection has beenpriced at £16 per sq m to make it affordable for mostfamilies or first time buyers on a restricted budget. Madefrom 100% easy care, hard wearing polyester, Heavenly is a1/8th gauge carpet, tufted at 24oz and features a luxuriousdeep pile that is ideal for bedrooms where traffic islighter. Available in a 4m width only, it comes in 12fashionable plain and flecked colours.

Business News

The latest report into the UK Floor Coverings market fromindustry analysts Plimsoll rates 155 of the UK’s leading 1000floorcoverings companies as being in financial danger. Amidcalls for bail-outs and emergency measures, Senior AnalystDavid Pattison asks: “Should we just let them fail?”

Pattison argues: “There is no doubt in my mind that recessionscatch bad businesses out. Those companies that have enteredthis period ill-prepared have placed themselves at a distinctdisadvantage. Many have grown used to running theirbusinesses on high risk business models, propped up largely onfinance.”

Of the 155 firms rated as Danger, the report shows:

• 53 increased their debts last year ; they are now carryingalmost twice the level of debt we recommend. Using debt hasbecome a means of propping up their businesses, for manythis started to become an issue up to 3 years ago.

• 128 saw profits fall last year and 113 are losing money.Theircosts are clearly ahead of sales and they have failed torespond to changes in their business structure.

• 61 managed to increase sales last year, some would arguean enviable task. However it only proves that despite theirrising debts and mounting losses they have been desperate tomaintain sales at any cost.

• 90 are firms which are “well established” but are failing toadapt to the modern floor coverings market and are nowfalling behind the rest of the market as a result.

In summary, it is clear that many of these 155 ‘danger’businesses are fundamentally poor, aggressive or disruptive andare unhelpful to the market. With newly prudent bankingsystems in place, raising quick finance will not paper over thecracks as it once did.

Recent examples of failed businesses in the news bear thisout. Zavvi,Woolworths,Whittard and Wedgewood, were allrated Danger by Plimsoll prior to their demise.

Latest research shows that the UK floor coverings industry isnot immune to the current crisis. The sector has overcapacity,33% of businesses suffered a fall sales last year, withcompetitive pressure forcing many to see sales fall by 9%.

The reality is, for many of these 155 danger businesses, theirproblems go back years, certainly long before the current UKslow down, yet they have failed to fix their problems.

The Plimsoll analysis says not all of these 155 businesses willsurvive. Of those who do, very few will be in their currentshape and many will be in the hands of new owners.

The floor coverings market too will see winners emerging outof the crisis. There are 558 terrific companies who cancompete fiercely on price, and are largely debt free whileholding their margins. Most are operating at the height ofproductivity. These will be the one’s to watch in the nextperiod,” says Pattison.
