Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection

General Rules for Spot Removal• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet

roll or clean cloth

• Scoop up or scrape off solids

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –if unsure, use solvent first

• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards

• BLOT, do NOT rub

• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; workinto the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge

• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backedcarpet tiles

• When using solvents always ensure there is plentyof fresh air ventilation

• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotterswith clean water

• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer

Periodic CleaningWhen the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it coulddo with a really good clean, you can either do the jobyourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaningcompany.

If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourselfmake sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approvedproducts. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:

WOOLSAFE-approved carpetcare products have beenindependently and scientificallytested and are safe andeffective for cleaning andmaintaining all types of carpetsand rugs.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferablythe moment they occur.

Housekeeping Tips forCarpets and RugsEntrance or walk-off mats

The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to thehouse is highly recommended, as they will significantlyreduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They shouldbe of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removedfrom shoe soles and must be cleaned regularlythemselves.

Protective treatmentsMany carpets come with a protective fibre treatment toreduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and willeventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regularcleaning is still required.

Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturercan be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearestWOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit ourwebsite: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATEHOUSEHOLDER section.)

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have theWOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

This information is provided with thesupport of WOOLSAFE members for thebenefit of all carpet retailers and fitters.

Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for generalhousehold use. Although they may clean the carpetsatisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problemssuch as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damageto the pile or backing of the carpet.

It is best to engage the services of aprofessional carpet & upholstery cleaningcompany. To get a really expert job doneentrust the work to a WOOLSAFE

accredited carpet cleaning company. These companies are fully trained, havebeen in business for a considerable

length of time, are members of one or more recognisedprofessional trade associations related to the cleaningindustry and have a reputation for top quality service. Andthey use only WOOLSAFE-approved cleaning agents onyour wool carpets and rugs!

If you have a problem with a carpet or rug thatrequires an independent inspector, a network of carpetcomplaint investigators, trained and registered by TheWOOLSAFE Organisation is available throughout the UK and Ireland.

WOOLSAFE Registered Inspectorshave extensive experience ininvestigating the causes for carpetcomplaints based on their practicalinvolvement with carpets and rugs overmany years.

They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rugcomplaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers, retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They cancarry out or commission tests where required, and willprovide comprehensive reports.

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch producesbetween 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipeused by the dyer remains constant, and isfollowed to the letter, in each separateproduction the colour reproduction will varyfrom batch to batch. However production ismatched back to the original or mastersample to ensure that the colour remains‘within a commercial tolerance’.This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professionaljudgement of the head dyer based on his/herexperience. A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensureperfect colour matching it is advisable that asingle width be used in any installationrequiring exact colour matching.N.B. Carpets which are laid with the piletravelling in different directions, even thoughthey be from the same batch will appear notto match. For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers maynot be from the same batch as currentproduction and therefore should be used as aguide and not an exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, whichis created during production when spun yarnis cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall ontothe surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’. The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibreis only a small fraction of the total fibrecontained in the carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuouspile is pulled through the primary backing ofthe carpet. This is usually due to some localcondition, possibly some sharp object whichhas caught in a loop in situ and has resultedin a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with bytrimming the offending end level with therest of the pile. They should not be left as thiscould result in further loops being pulled anddeveloping into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work itsway to the surface and stand proud of the restof the pile. This is probably due to one end ofthe tuft being longer than the other i.e. Jshaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedialaction merely requires that the offending tuftsbe scissor trimmed level with the rest of thepile. They should never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpethas become crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation oflight and dark patches on the carpet. This willoccur on all pile fabrics but can be morenoticeable on plainer carpets because theshadows created by pile pressure will not bedisguised by a heavy pattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have thecapacity to store it. Static is caused by thebuild up of static electricity upon personnelin a dry environment and is discharged whena person makes contact with an object whichcan conduct electricity (i.e. door handle orfiling cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensitydepending upon the individual, air humidityand the contact materials. Static is moreusually associated with synthetic materials asthey do not retain moisture very well but itcan and does occur with wool in very dryroom conditions.Preventative measures include theintroduction of moisture into the room or insitu carpet treatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade inuse. The degree of fade can vary dependingon the colour chosen and the local conditionsto which the carpet is subjected.Fading can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet light which is found in daylight, but isaccelerated when sunlight shines directlyonto the carpet. This has the effect oflightening or “Bleaching” the colour just asexposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposedto such conditions just as you would protectother furniture or fabrics.A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or napof the carpet changes direction and thusreflects light at different angles showing theeffects of shading which can becomepermanent. It is also described as‘watermarking’. This can happen to everycarpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indianor even Coir Matting. Like shading it can bemore apparent on plain carpet because heavypatterns can disguise the effects. It can occurquite quickly after installation. A tremendousamount of research has been carried out overmany years by many institutes to determinethe cause of this phenomenon but none of ithas proved conclusive. There is no commonlyknown manufacturing process which cancause or cure this phenomenon and thereforeit is not a manufacturing fault. For furtherinformation please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy pointload, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not toindent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile torecover. In the case of very heavy loads inplace for a considerable time, the recoverytime can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only thepile of the carpet that becomes indented. theunderlay will also indent and the backing ofthe carpet may also distort into theindentation in the underlay. Some underlay’swill recover well and some less welldepending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.The use of cups below furniture legs canspread the load and the net result is a largerarea of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939and many manufacturers will have data onthis aspect of carpet performance. In this testthe carpet is loaded for 24 hours and thedegree of recovery is measured after 1 hourand 24 hours. Since there are so manydifferent underlay’s however, it is very rarefor the recovery from a heavy static load to beevaluated on carpet and underlay.Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaningwith a rotating brush machine) will speed uprecovery but in the case of seriousindentations the use of an iron and damp clothor a steam iron together with a blunt darningneedle to carefully tease up the pile can bebeneficial. Care must be take not to over wetthe carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of trafficwhich eventually flattens the pile particularlyin the main areas of use. All pile fabrics willflatten to greater or lesser degree dependanton the amount of traffic to which it issubjected and the construction (tuftdensity/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some localcondition to which the carpet has beensubjected to, or maintenance, or lack ofmaintenance programme. There is nothing weas manufacturers can do to prevent soiling inuse. There are several types of soiling whichare quite common:Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave astain. In such instances, professional helpshould be sought.Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leavesticky soap residues in the fibres which canresult in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from theobvious soiled edges, at gaping skirtingboards for instance, dark lines appearing onsurface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards.Sometimes the shape of floorboards can beseen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimesshows itself as spots on the carpet, this is dueto the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both inthe underlay and the carpet, leaving dustdeposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paperis essential as a preventative measure. It is the responsibility of the retailer to advisethe consumer when the carpet is measured ofany poorly fitting doors, skirtings, orfloorboards and the consumers responsibilityto ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if aresulting complaint is to be avoided.

Flooring factsheet

TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. Aheavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A widevariety of styles and textures can then be created using varioustechniques.

LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loopheights to create informal, random textures which are very forgivingfor marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areasand busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have alevel surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing

as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave

is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider

area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

Carpet types

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale - with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results - somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired

09 VoiceOF THE TRADE

“Lesley Inman of Edel Telenzo Age: old enough to know betterJob Title: company secretary and operations managerYears with present company: 26Years in flooring industry: 26Previous roles in different companies: dispensary of a pharmacy Main non-work interests: cooking, reading swimming, dancing(all types) and gardening.

“What’s the key market issue/challenge today?

Maintaining and even improving service levels in reducedmarket conditions. Consumers are ever more critical andretailers more pressurised therefore the manufacturer has torespond faster and more effectively.

Is price winning over quality/design?

The consumer has to like the quality first, and then they’lllook at the price. At the middle to better end of themarket, design and quality rule the decision process butcurrently consumers are invariably asking for some kind ofdiscount, which is to be expected in this economic climate.

Do you agree that there are too many peoplemaking carpet now?

No. If the industry is to thrive, there has to be competition, whether it be in the contract or domestic markets.Depriving consumers of choice would only remove theirwish to take the product seriously.

What’s your favourite flooring product?

The range of stripes and plains we launched last year under theGrand Creations banner - Jubilee, Piccadilly, Mainline andCentrepoint. It’s been a very successful selection which has realstyle and gives good value for money.

If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?

To value the cost and time that goes into sampling andpoint-of-sale and to treat carpet samples with more respect.Especially when they are supplied free of charge!

In your time in the trade, what has most surprised you?

How friendly the trade is and how many people areprepared to help one another out – like retailers taking indeliveries for each other and supporting each other.

And most disappointed you?

I care about the company, and I get frustrated sometimeswhen I come across a lack of enthusiasm and innovation, when things are not being improved upon or brought up to date.

Are there enough women in the trade given thatmost purchase decisions are made by women?

Actually men are increasingly also making purchase decisionsfor themselves and women are paying as well as choosing, assingle households are growing! But having said that it’s still avery male-oriented industry; there aren’t enough female salesstaff and it would be good to see more ladies in seniormanagement positions as well as in the production andtechnical side.

What’s the most important key to success inflooring?

It isn’t one thing – it’s three: service, product and price: eachone relies on the other two!

If you didn’t work in this industry what would havebeen your second choice of career?

Nurse or pharmacist, but a family history of nursing mademe want to try something different.

“Consumers are ever more criticaland retailers more pressurised, therefore the manufacturer has torespond faster and more effectively”

Recession-hit retailers have more reason to return to the National FloorShow this year, says organiser Andy Vaughan. “I think that in tough timesyou want to see who you are dealing with and talk to them face-to-face.Relationships and trust are more important than ever,” he said.

“If you sit behind a desk or counter all year, you don’t get that inside track.Harrogate is an amazing networking event and the year’s best opportunityto see what’s really going on in the market”, says Andy

Delivering a successful trade show in the teeth of a credit crunch is achallenge for owners United Business Media but there are reasons to becheerful says Andy. “I won’t pretend otherwise, it isn’t easy - but actuallything are going well and we are very optimistic. We’re pleased with wherewe are at this stage,” he told The Stocklists.

The organisers have encouraged many new companies to join the event. And key exhibitors such as Associated Weavers, Bajong, Cormar, Karndean,Headlam, Lano, Ulster and Victoria are signed up to show.

Andy has come into the NFS with experience of the major home interestshows run by UBM including the Interiors show held at Birmingham’s NECeach year.

“Harrogate is a mature show and maybe it had become a little tired. Iwant to make the show more aspirational and introduce new initiativesand new people to the event,” he says, promising that “small changes willmake a big difference” in 2009.

“Visitors will see a fresher, more cheerful show – with more colour andmore happening. We are particularly delighted that we can bring thebeautiful, re-furbished Royal Hall back into the event which makes astunning attraction in itself.”

Visitor numbers and the commitment of exhibitors has declined a little inrecent years and the recession inevitably takes its toll but while the 2008event saw less people, the general consensus was that there was betterbusiness being booked. “It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality andbuyers,” says Andy. “2008 saw a revival of order-taking at the event.

“The flooring industry deserves a strong show but the trade needs tosupport the event to make it work well – then everybody wins.” he says.

Combating sound and soaking up minor subfloor irregularities, the Acoustica range ofwood and laminate underlays from Floorwise offer the ideal combination of

performance and value.

Acoustica Compact, Acoustica Good, Acoustica Better and Acoustica Best all deaden thesound of wood and laminate floors, providing a quieter atmosphere within the home,

while also helping installers to eradicate minor irregularities within the substrate toensure a secure and reliable floating floor installation.

Manufactured to the highest standards, the Acoustica range has been tested underlaboratory conditions to ensure maximum sound beating performance. Acoustica not

only deals with impact sound between floors, but also airborne sound within the room, helping to alleviate the often hollow sound that can occur with wood or laminateflooring.Tested under the EPLF’s SONE method, the range topping Acoustica Best

achieves a SONE value of 53, while even Acoustica Good scores an impressive 54 SONE.

Acoustica Better and Acoustica Best also feature a moisture barrier that prevents residual moisture penetrating the underlayand adversely affecting moisture-sensitive wood and laminate flooring. “The Acoustica range offers retailers and installers a

high performance wood and laminate underlay at exceptional value,” comments Richard Bailey, Managing Director, Floorwise.“With the range, retailers can offer consumers a proven wood and laminate underlay with potential for valuable up-sales,

while the installer can select the correct underlay for the job in terms of performance and cost.”

Net or not? Can the internet really win you sales... or just lose you customers?

Flooring Forum

Let’s hear it!

Our new platform forretailers to respond to tradeissues and inform theindustry about the problemsand opportunities they faceon the High Street.

Each provocative topic fordebate is linked to ananonymous online survey.and there’s a Soapboxfeature where retailers cansound off about the subject

A full report and analysis ofthe results will feature ineach month’s magazine.

If you have a topic youwould like debated, let usknow.

In UK retail as a whole, internet sales have grown to £40 billion annually – that’s 17% of total sales toconsumers – but the web has had a shaky start in the flooring sector and it’s unclear whether flooringretailers will ever gain business from the web – or lose customers to online sellers.

Substantial investments have been made by leading organisation’s such as the Carpet Foundation, Headlamwith their yourfloors site and the retail giants. Some manufacturers have tried hard to provide qualityinformation online, others haven’t bothered too much.

While you can’t run your fingers through a 60oz wool carpet on a laptop screen, retailers always run the risk ofproviding a free ‘showroom’ for the net in the way in which electrical white goods retailers are only too familiar.

Some analysts predict a ‘tipping point’ in the next five years when retail sales may grow to a third of totalretail sales and the High Street will be forced to change structurally.

Booksellers and music stores have already retreated and even the touchy-feely fashion chains are losing out.Is flooring resilient to this trend and can the internet work harder to direct customers to your stores throughyour own websites and directory sites such as the Carpet Foundation and general services like yell.com?

What would you like to see happen on the internet in the flooring industry? Is it a threat or an opportunity? And should your industry be using valuable and scarce resources to make the internet work better for youand your customers?

Vinyl floorcoverings manufactured in Europe have been given the highest possible A+ rating in thenew BRE Green Guide to environmentally sustainable products.

“This is terrific news for the industry,” says Polyflor marketing manager Simon James. “It vindicatesour long held belief that in environmental terms the long service life of vinyls, their ability to berecycled and their performance benefits in use make them the ideal choice among resilientfloorcoverings.”

Generically, vinyl floorcoverings – including homogeneous, heterogeneous and safety floors – arenow BRE A+ rated for major use areas, such as education and health. “The fact that vinyl, generically, is now A+ or A rated will make life simpler for specifiers but it also makes it evenmore important for manufacturers to successfully pursue other environmental performanceobjectives in order to differentiate themselves from those who are less environmentally activeand aware,” says Simon James.

Altogether, the collection consists of 21 new on-trend colours, each ofwhich falls within one of eight nature-inspired chromatic groupings such as‘earthenware’, ‘woodcarving’, ‘foliage’ and ‘graphite’ .These groupings formthe basis of the new tones coming through in interiors and design moregenerally, for example in the latest wallcovering, furnishing and fabricdesigns from the leading designers and manufacturers.

“We are seeing a steadysupport from goodretailers for our incentive

promotions – we are launching a new Marriott promotion at theNFS and we felt that highlighting winners from the previous yearwould be a good way to show that winning the prize is all abouttaking part,” said Irfan Khan, promotions manager at the BWMB.

The new Marriott retailer promotion will be launched in September,

Penthouse Carpets has added five new colours to Stateside, their popular 80/10/10, 50oz British Wool range. An 18 shadecolourbank of plains, the range will now have a selection ofnatural grey tones to meet the current interior fashion trend.

“This is our second best selling range and we’re delighted withthe new shades, which keep Stateside right up-to-the minutefor consumers,” said Paul Speakman of Penthouse Carpets.

New colour sampling is ready now and the Penthouserepresentatives will be visiting stockists to update the range in store.

British Wool always recommends WoolSafe when specialist carpetcleaning is required for a British Wool carpet. The company producecleaning agents that are highly researched and tested and providecentralized access to a national network of partner companies.

The company, which has been testing all types of carpet cleaningchemicals for over ten years launched a new website in Marchproviding easy to navigate, simple information.

So, the BWMB was disturbed to hear that a recent ‘Which’ report, stated that specialist cleaning agents were unnecessary and thatwashing-up liquid was perfectly adequate for most stains. This hasnow been studied in detail by the WoolSafe team of technicalexperts after they decided to run a series of tests mirroring ‘Which’.These have shown this widely publicised and somewhat recklessstatement to be wholly incorrect.

WoolSafe report that, “Washing-up liquid causes rapid and seriousre-soiling on wool carpets and rugs and whilst may remove the stain, after a few days it will leave a darker, larger spot. Some of thesolutions used by ‘Which’ are capable of causing colour migration -bleeding from dark to light colours.”

“Lengthy research and development goes into formulating specialistchemicals which is why they perform much better and safer,” saidDr Agnes Zsednai,Technical Director at WoolSafe

Could colour be making a comeback? John Snee, joint Managing Director at Westex Carpets commentsthat they had their best colour launch ever this year.

The Yorkshire based company introduced several new shades to their Ultimate Twist Collection atDomotex 2009 in January including aubergine, some new greens, chicory and a new classic red andreport that they are all selling well.

The Westex Ultimate Twist Collection has an extensive colourbank of 120 colours in 8 differentqualities. Made from 80% wool and 20% nylon, these carpets give a superb combination ofperformance and technical design. The carpets are produced from fine 2-fold yarn to prevent pilereversal, giving improved appearance retention, recovery & resilience.

John is pragmatic about the many shades of beige in the showroom. “Beige is still king of course and wehave a wide selection of beiges. But there is a creeping-in of colour that is very evident.

“We have introduced many new colours over the years and have never had this kind of response. Colouris selling quicker than before and it is particularly significant when you consider that it is a quiet market.”

‘Very surprising’ - flooring’s resilience in recession

More than half of all UK floorcovering companies have achieved astrong or good financial rating despite the recession is the latestanalysis by one of the industry’s keading business analysts,

A new study by Plimsoll Publishing looking into the financial state ofthe UK floor coverings industry has, despite the UK recession, awarded 434 of UK’s top 1000 Floor Coverings companies a strongfinancial rating for their outstanding financial performance.

Plimsoll has rated each of the UK’s largest 1000 floor coveringscompanies into one of five ratings based on their overall financialperformance.

43% made the ‘strong’rating - delivering excellent performance -while a further 12% were rated as good. At the bottom end, Plimsollclasses 16% of companies as ‘caution’ due to their weakend state andsays the future of 13% is now in doubt.

David Pattison, Senior Analyst at Plimsoll, has the following view onthe findings “It was no real surprise to see the high number ofcompanies on the danger list, given the current economic crisisaffecting the floor coverings industry.

“However we were very surprised to see the high number ofexcellent businesses making it on to the strong list. I think these firmshave really upped their game in these difficult times and they areconcrete proof that necessity is the mother of invention.”

How the strong are surviving

During the latest financial year analysed, these 434 strong firms haveboasted the following impressive performance statistics.

Sales growth: On average these firms have seen sales increase by4.4%.This figure is an impressive statistic in a market which isgenerally flat. This demonstrate the strongest players’ ability to takemarket share from their rivals

“We were very surprised to see the high numberof excellent businesses making it on to the stronglist. I think these firms have really upped theirgame in these difficult times.”

Profit margins: For the strong companies, their profit margins aresitting at an average of 3.5%, as they have cut costs and usedcompetitive buying to increase their bottom line.

Levels of debt: Debts have all but been removed from thesecompanies. Most are operating completely debt free, thusreducing their reliance on the banks and other lenders.

Efficiency / productivity: Big improvements in efficiency meansthese firms are now delivering over £138,000 sales peremployee compared to others in the industry that struggle todeliver £125,000.This gives them a significant competitiveadvantage.

Pattison continues, “Obviously there are real concerns over the284 firms rated as Caution and Danger, their futures lookextremely uncertain.Their management are now operatingunder severe financial pressure where even normal trading isproving hazardous. Many of these firms seem likely to be soldoff; they are at an extremely high risk of failure unless they turntheir performance around fast.”

This special edition of the Plimsoll Analysis offers a unique insightinto the changing financial performance of UK’s leading FloorCoverings companies. Each firm has been named, analysed andrated based on their latest financial performance.
