“…Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.”

1 John 3:18

We are coming to the end of another academic year and although the ministry of the church will continue with great energy during the summer months (VBS, LYO Mission Trip, Summer Worship – just to name some of what will be going on!), it seems like a good time and place to say a heartfelt “thank you” to the many people who have given of their time, gifts, and hearts this year. To those who love our children (Nursery Workers, Sunday School Teachers & Assistants, Confirmation Teachers, and LYO Leaders), to those who lead and assist with worship (Choir, Bell Choir, Praise Team, Altar Guild, Assisting Ministers, Communion Assistants, Ushers, and Greeters), to those who keep our library current and relevant, to those who volunteer to help in the office with large mailings, to those who serve on our Congregation Council, to those who serve the building and keep our grounds in good repair, to all of you who make the effort to step in and help out whenever we ask: THANK YOU! The body of Christ does not live within the walls of a building, but rather within the hearts of the faithful. Thank you for your faithful hearts, and for the many ways that you show the face of Christ within our walls and, even more importantly, for the ways you show Christ to people outside of our walls.

A few words from Pastor Anna

“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ… And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having pro-duced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:3-5, 9-11)

There are two phrases that stand out to me from this passage. The first is the apostle’s reference to the Philippians’ “sharing in the gospel.” The second is Paul’s prayer for the Philippians, that their “love may overflow…with knowledge and full insight.”

Matt, Lauren, Brad, Natalie, Julia, Laura, Kate, Cassie, Sam, and Karly have all shared in the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, in many different ways since that first day they came through Epiphany’s doors. From Sunday School to confirmation classes to the LYO Loft, they’ve learned and discussed the stories of the Christian faith and how these stories apply to their lives. Many of them have attended one or more summer trips to Group Work Camp, where they have shared in the joy of the gospel by singing, dancing and having fun with Christian youth from all around the country, as well as sharing their helping hands and willing hearts with grateful residents who benefit from the construction pro-jects they complete. And they’ve come to worship at Epiphany with their families – to hear God’s word and share in the Lord’s supper.

I think what I am most going to remember and cherish about these seniors is their understanding and embodiment of what “sharing” really means in this passage. The Greek word translated as “sharing” here is koinonia, which can also be translated as “community.”

These seniors have played a big role in creating the kind of community that I love being a part of at Epiphany. It’s a kind of community that respects and celebrates everyone’s unique presence, opinions, and contributions. It’s a community that understands that through God’s amazing love and grace, we’re already all pure and blameless before Jesus – but still loves to show God’s amazing love through acts of service and kindness. It’s a community of relationships that support us and bring us joy even after we leave church on Sunday morning.

My prayer for these seniors is the same as Paul’s prayer for the Philippians. As they go on into the new world of college or whatever’s coming next, I pray that they continue to overflow with love for God as they grow in knowledge and insight, and that, as they, like the Philippians, continue to need help to determine what is best, they will also continue to know that God’s love overflows for them.

And as we head into summer – a season of growth - that’s my prayer for you, too.

Congratulations seniors!

Peace, Pastor Anna

Dear Epiphany,

On Sunday, May 6, 2018, we will recognize ten graduating high school seniors at the 9:30 am worship service. That day, we will hear these wonderful words from the apos-tle Paul’s letter to the Philippians:

Men In Mission Pancake Breakfast A Success!

Our Annual Pancake Breakfast was held on Saturday, April 14. On a horrible weather-day, about 95 people were served, down just a few from last year. Pre-sales and donations were very similar to last year, so revenues did not vary much. Proceeds will be used to provide assis-tance to Epiphany and Elmhurst individuals and families who are experiencing financial diffi-culties. Dave Norquist did a great job as Chairman, and we are grateful to volunteers Will Sly, Kurt Fowich, Leon Casey, and the Elsass and Stufflebeam families for helping us out.

Our next event will be the Golf Outing. Watch for updates on sign-ups !

Check It Out!

As of March 31, offerings and gifts to the church are running behind forecasted expectations on a year-to-date (YTD) basis by $9,600 or 5.5% compared to the budget. The operating ex-penses have been higher than anticipated by $9,400 or 6.5% due to additional maintenance work required on the HVAC systems post installation. The loan from the Epiphany Endowment Fund for the new boiler has been reduced to $58,300 as of March 31 from the original loan balance of $75,000. Thank you for the generous gifts! Please review your 2018 commitments and giving statements that were recently mailed. The cash position of the church can be negatively impacted when we fall behind expectations since the majority of our expenses, such as payroll, insurance, utilities etc. remain fixed throughout the year. If you have any questions about your 2018 pledge, please contact the church office at (630) 832-8457 or [email protected] and they will be happy to assist you. In Christ, The Finance Committee

The church is seeking someone to serve as the Financial Secretary of the congregation to re-place Cindy O’Malley since her term will be ending later this year. For someone with bookkeeping and/or accounting experience, this is a great way to use your skills while volun-teering a couple of hours each week. If you are interested, please call Jack Graham at the church at (630) 832-8457, or see Pastors Ron, Jen, or Anna. You may also contact Chuck Sutton at [email protected], Ted Mandigo at [email protected], or Cindy O’Malley at [email protected] for more in-formation about the position.

We sincerely appreciate all that Cindy has done for the church in this role for many years!
