Several years ago, I was visiting over the back fence with my neighbor who was a church staff member of an independent
church. I said, “How did Palm Sunday go?” He replied, “What is Palm Sunday?”
As important a season of the year as Lent is, some churches sadly allow this wonderful opportunity to focus on the sacrifice and suffering of Jesus go uncelebrated. Don’t let Lent go uncelebrat-ed. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5 (we will worship at 6:30 pm) and continues until Easter Sunday (April 20).
Of course, the culmination of the holy season of Lent is called Holy Week which includes Palm/Passion Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. All Christians celebrate Easter, but Easter cannot be fully appreciated unless you experience the sacrifice and suffering of Jesus during Lent.
One important tradition of Lent is making our personal sacrifice to identify with the many sacrifices of Jesus. Many Christian “give up something” they enjoy during Lent. A few people even give up a bad habit and use this sacred season to rid themselves of bad habits forever.
I invite you to join me in the “journey through the wilderness” called Lent.
In Christ,
Dr. Scott Youngblood, Senior Pastor
To all of you who led the music in our worship services while I was at the Baylor YouthCue, thank you for serving so willingly with your gifts. Thank you!
To all who came from our church to support our young people and listen to the concert of worship music, thank you. We had between 50 and 60 peo-ple, including our confirmation class who came. I know the young people were appreciative of your being there. Thank you for the adults who drove our confirmation class to the concert. Thank you to Weven Kimmey for organizing that. You gave them a wonderful opportunity.
Thank you to Christa Fonville for driving the bus for the Youth Choir to attend the Festival, to Clay Williams for going as a sponsor, and to Nate Starmer for providing wonderful “treats!” for our young people to enjoy during the weekend. Thank you to all parents and family members for giving our youth this opportunity.
Thank you to our Youth Choir members for the hours of preparation to memorize music and for doing your very best as singers in the choir and as solo singers and speakers in the event. Most of all thank you for being outstanding, responsible individuals. It was a privilege and pleasure to spend the weekend with you.
To Everyone –
Please remember that on March 5, there will be an Ash Wednesday service at 6:30 p.m. This service will mark the beginning of our Lenten Season. Lent is a special time for re-evaluating our own lives in our relation to God. It is a time to consider how we are living out our belief in God and a time to express our gratitude for God’s love for us. Please join us.
Margaret
It is truly a joy to work each day at this church and to share God's love with people in our community on behalf of this congregation. One of the effective ministries that you support through your weekly giving to the operating budget is the Backpack Program at Eagle Heights Elementary. Each Friday afternoon students that qualify for this program receive a backpack filled with nonperishable food items to last the entire weekend. While the program isn't intended to replace
meals, we know that in many cases it is the only food some children will receive until school resumes on Monday.
When this program started several years ago, our church made a commitment to fund the program in full at Eagle Heights from our operating budget. At that time 50 students were receiving backpacks and the yearly cost was $5,000. By the end of this 36 week school year, it's estimated that more than 70 children will be receiving backpacks. It costs $6 each week to stock a backpack. We continue to faithfully contribute $5,000 each year to this amazing program. However, due to the rising cost of food and the increasing number of backpacks needed, that pays for less than 50% of the cost per year and no longer fully underwrites the backpack program at Eagle Heights. A portion of the money raised at this year's Lord's Acre will be sent to help continue this congregation's commitment to fully funding this program. If you feel led to make an additional contribution to this program, please make a note in the memo line of your check "E.H. Backpacks" and the money will be used to help fund the growing needs of the program.
Thank you for being a congregation that cares so deeply for the children in our community.

Plans are already underway for Vacation Bible School! Save the dates of June 22 through June 26. This year’s VBS is titled Weird Animals. The theme is that God loves all of us, no matter what we have done or no matter how we look. This is a great chance for children to learn about unconditional love. If you would like to help in any way there will be opportunities for you to sign up as a crew leader, teacher, decorator, storyteller---well, the list goes on! Watch your newsletter and bulletin each week for exciting ways to help.
This Saturday, March 1st marks the end of our eighth season of Upward Basketball and Cheerleading. Participants will be treated to a hot dog lunch with all the trimmings, music from the new contemporary service praise band, entertainment featuring T. J. Savage and Sam Amyett, and the presentation of awards.
You are invited to join us for the fun.
The confirmation Class now numbers 19!What a great lively group they are. Seven-teen of the nineteen made the trip to Waco on Sunday to hear our Youth Choir as they participated in the Youth Cue concert at Baylor. Expect great things from this class of energetic confirmands.
Hope you have a great week.
