The JEWISH Center

YOUR CENTER

The Ever-Present Duality of Rosh Hashanah

Rabbi Dovid Zirkind

As we turn the corner

towards the High Holiday

season each year, I am flooded

with ideas for study, tunes to

sing and recipes to cook; because

no Jewish Holiday is complete

without its most scrumptious

menus. While everyone’s tables

may look slightly different, the

experience of family and friends

gathering to share Yom Tov

delicacies is nearly universal.

And yet, when I think of our

religious experience today, I

can’t help but contrast it with

other communities throughout

our history, where the tone of

Rosh Hashanah in particular

was quite different.

In his 14th century code

of Jewish Law, Arbah Turim,

the great Spanish scholar R’

Yaakov ben Asher of Cologne

records a series of Gaonic tradi-

tions regarding Rosh Hashanah

and Shabbat Shuvah in which

Yom Tov clothing was not

worn, meat was certainly not

eaten and in some towns fasting

was normative. Apparently an

entire strand of traditional

Judaism felt the awe and

intensity of the High Holidays

too powerful to simply celebrate

like a Chag. Unlike Pesach or

Sukkot, the responsibility of

repentance and self-reflection

overshadowed the holiday-like

features of the season.

Both in practice and in

our halachic literature, the al-

ternative has proven dominant;

our clothing is most dignified

and our meals certainly elegant.

Yet, this duality of the Days of

Awe is alive and well. Each year

we pause to challenge ourselves

to grow as individuals, we pray

for the ongoing support of the

nations that have welcomed and

supported the Jews who live

among them and we are mindful

of the support and security the

State of Israel so desperately

needs. While in so many ways

we celebrate Rosh Hashanah as

a Yom Tov, its identity as a

Yom HaDin is without a doubt

unforgettable.

The most powerful days

of the year are nearly upon us

and the opportunities they

present are ripe for the picking.

Through our time in shul we can

fully immerse ourselves in pray-

er and study, and with the extra

time around the Yom Tov table

we can focus on giving and

engaging with the people we

love most. It is our eternal

prayer that through our

commitment to these values of

family, faith and peoplehood

that we look back on this Rosh

Hashanah and every Rosh

Hashanah as the start of

something truly sweet.

Greetings from our President The High Holidays provide a time and

method to reflect on our year and

commensurate with our level of Jewish guilt,

retrospection. It is a time to think about our

personal brand. What are we known for? How

do our family, friends, colleagues and even

strangers see us (not to mention G-d)?

Developing a brand, of course, is not just

about our external appearance but about our

day-to-day actions. A combination of our

upbringing, education, hobbies, behavior at

work and at leisure all make up part of our

brand. It is not easy to figure out what our

brand should be; it’s even harder to find a way

to live that brand every day. As Jews, we are

blessed with a powerful tool – our tradition

and our Halacha. This is perhaps the ultimate

guide to developing a powerful, transmittable

and everlasting brand.

As we think about our personal brands this

Holiday season, our Officers and Clergy think

about the brand of The Jewish Center. I

thank our rabbis, cantor, administrative staff,

custodians and of course my fellow Officers for

all the hard work this summer to make our

Holiday season possible. Our Center

represents the collective aspirations of our

community - past, present and future. And

our current leadership team has continued to

build on the precious reputation developed by

our prior leaders.

There are many measures of success, and most

important to me are the internal measures –

how do our members feel? How do our mem-

bers volunteer, donate and participate? How

well do we meet their individualized needs? It

can be hard to assess the qualitative aspects of

success. But, lucky for me, our membership is

not shy about letting me know when there is

something we could have done better. And

while I always love compli-

ments, know that I value

constructive remarks even when

they are less than positive.

While internal feedback is

important, we also have to pay

attention to external feedback. When I travel

to other Jewish communities, rabbis and lay

leaders are always excited to share with me all

the activities of their shul. When they find out

I am a member of The Jewish Center many

openly ask “Do they do this at The Jewish

Center?” It seems they want to demonstrate

that they too have vitality, innovation and an

important place in the Modern Orthodox com-

munity. And very often, they do – there is

much we can learn from other institutions.

But whether open or implied, these questions

exist only because so many hold The Jewish

Center as the benchmark – We are a brand

name. I know we are all proud of The Center’s

brand, and I know that when we spend time

in other synagogues, it often reinforces what is

unique and compelling about The Center.

Even if we miss the mark here or there, our

brand is very strong, and is something to be

excited about.

I hope that in the year to come, The Jewish

Center remains true to its brand. I hope that

The Center can be a source of support and

inspiration as we each struggle to develop and

live our personal brands and those of our

loved ones. May this year be a year of health,

success and peace, for The Jewish Center, for

the State of Israel and for Jews everywhere.

Ketivah Vechatima Tovah.

A Teshuvah and Tefillah Education Series for the High Holy Days in memory of Moshe Green, z”l. Moshe Green was a prominent leader and long-time member of our community. He was an officer of The Center and served

as our Chairman of the Board for decades. As a Jewish leader and philanthropist, he had a major impact on advancing

Jewish Education, both in Israel and in the Diaspora. Involved in a number of different religious Zionist institutions

and Torah U'Mada projects, Moshe Green was and continues to be a role model for our entire community. This annual

Book Club • Dinah Mendes • [email protected]

This year The Jewish Center Book Club features a new and

diverse crop of recent releases. Our season begins with Michael

Oren’s Ally: My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide,

which chronicles Oren’s years as Israeli ambassador to the United

States (2009-2013), and his personal journey from Jewish-

American historian to Israeli diplomat and political figure. We shift gears for our second selection, The Betrayers,

David Bezmozgis’ prize-winning (National Jewish Book award 2015), page-turner novel about an ex-Soviet Israeli pol-

itician who confronts the man who betrayed him to the KGB. Our final selection is Shulem Deen’s All Who Go Do Not

Return: A Memoir, his compelling account of growing up Hasidic and his struggle to define his own beliefs. The

meetings, which take place in the home of a Jewish Center member, are led by a discussant. They generate stimulating

and lively back-and-forth and are followed by refreshments. We welcome new participants – so please join us for a New

itual experience both in and out of the synagogue and a greater connectedness with the

broader Jewish Community in the United States, Israel and around the globe. The Jewish

Center's active committee system is constantly evolving and developing new programs and

social and religious events. The nucleus of YL's programming is the

weekly Shabbat minyan, a spiritual service in a warm atmosphere,

including sermons by Rabbi Dovid Zirkind and other JC clergy.

YL hosts Shabbat meals, educational programming, and fun social

events to facilitate meeting other members as well as the rabbis.

The Jewish Center Youth Department is one of the most successful youth

programs on the Upper West Side and remains a warm and welcoming

place for young families in our community. With professionally-run Shabbat programs in our Youth Center and Beit

Midrash, and a plethora of exciting and educational year-round events, parents of children in preschool through 6th grade

can participate fully in synagogue and holiday services while their children are exposed to introductory tefillah education,

Parsha study and some wonderful peer fun as well. The Jewish Center is the center for the entire family, including your

tots and teens.

This year’s Sisterhood concluded with our annual brunch on May 17th. Hosted by the in-

comparable Rachel Wolf, it was a unique opportunity for women of all ages to come together,

enjoy a selection of homemade delicacies, and hear from master spice blender Lior Lev Ser-

his blending techniques, and remained until the last question was answered. Proceeds from

the brunch support Sisterhood’s program of providing shivah meals for grieving families.

VIP Committee: Connect More at The JC, Start Volunteering!

Announcing The JC’s Volunteer Improvement

Program: Connect more at the JC, Start volunteering!

You may be thinking, "While I know it's a good

idea to contribute my time to shul, I just don’t have

the time." At The JC, we understand that balance, so

we've created volunteer opportunities requiring varying

levels of time.

Here are two reasons to volunteer: Feeling con-

nected. JC is a big shul and you may be feeling that

you're not as connected to the community as you wish.

Volunteering is a great way to immediately feel more

central to the community.

Volunteering is a chesed. All the vibrant JC

programming, building security, support in time of

need and the welcoming JC spirit could not happen

without volunteers.

Already 29% of the membership regularly vol-

unteer at The Jewish Center. The Volunteer Improve-

ment Program (VIP) is a new initiative to get more

people involved in meaningful ways and to improve the

experience of our volunteers.

We will formally launch the VIP on October 24

with a Volunteering Shabbat kiddush to recognize cur-

rent volunteers and inspire new ones.

Don’t wait: ask your questions and to raise

your hand by emailing [email protected]

Connect more, start volunteering!

Crown Heights is reaching new peaks with

kosher cuisine: across the street from Italian mainstay

Basil, gourmet burger restaurant Boeuf & Bun

(www.boeufbun.com) opened in October 2014. The 3

train subway is a convenient route from the Upper

West Side. Boeuf & Bun is set with brick wall,

reclaimed lumber paneling and block wood tables that

typify a Brooklyn vibe. B&B does not take

reservations and shortest waits are before 7PM as the

restaurant filled up on a Sunday evening. The crowd

was a diverse mix of families, couples, locals and

foodies. The servers were hip and friendly and the

owner-chef Tzemach Woolstone, welcoming. We were

greeted with popcorn and mason jars of water; the

appetizers come out quickly but the dining is leisurely

afterwards. Our suggestions on starters are: the puffy

(soft) tacos of brisket with a smoky sauce and salad

tastes, B&B wings (fried with a sweet sauce and a hint

of spice), crunchy fried pickles, the ribs in a zippy sauce

and a heaping order of fries with truffle oil.

The house beverage is a delightful lemonade

with mint and cucumber. B&B also maintains a solid

craft beer menu. A wine list is also available.

The stars of the evening are the “artisanal”

burgers. They are generous in portion, prepared fresh

and cooked the way you want (rare to well done). B&B

offers ten types of burgers based on toppings, varying

from the Morning Scramble (with fried egg and beef

bacon) to the Chilin Burger (with yummy chili) to the

Down South (with BBQ pulled beef and fried pickles).

And for those of us who prefer low carb options, look

for the “Boeuf & No Bun” preparation, which is any

burger served cut up on a bed of lettuce, tomato and

cucumber, drizzled with the specific burger’s toppings

as a dressing.

Finish the evening with fried oreos which taste

like French beignets and are served with a side of

creamy (parve) ice cream and a strawberry reduction

(the other dessert of s’Mores was not as special). More

kosher restaurants should be like Boeuf & Bun.

Restaurant Review: Kosher Tabler (pronounced “tay-bler”): Boeuf & Bun

Thanks to the vision and generosity of the UJA

Federation's Live w/ Purpose Initiative, The Jewish

Center is proud to launch an exciting Social Action

fellowship for young professionals (20s and 30s) this

coming year. The fellowship will include monthly semi-

nars led by experts on a wide array of social issue;

including homelessness, affective philanthropy, human

trafficking and more. Co-taught by Rabbi Dovid

Zirkind, the seminars will focus on the synthesis of

text-based Torah study and the innovative social

justice programing. In addition, the group will make

bi-monthly site visits to organizations and institutions

forging new paths in the world of social action, includ-

ing Dorot, Met Council and others. Space in this pro-

gramming is limited. Applications and further details

will be available on our website in the coming weeks.

Meet the New Staff

Rabbi Noach Goldstein, William Fischman Rabbinic Intern

As I sit to write, the humidity makes the term

“muggy” seem literal, and one step outside is enough to

confirm that we are still mired in the sleepy dog days of

summer. Nevertheless, we suddenly find ourselves re-

citing לדוד ה' אורי after shacharit and ma’ariv, and at

first glance it appears jarring and even inappropriate

for us to recite this psalm right now. We have just

started blowing the shofar, have barely begun the long

process of preparing ourselves for Rosh Hashanah and

Yom Kippur; how can we already recite David’s bold

verses, “God is my light and my help; whom should I

fear… Should an army encamp against me my heart

would not fear; should war rise against me in this I

would trust?” Can we truly state at this early stage

that we are sufficiently spiritually focused to claim,

“Only one thing I ask of God…to dwell in the house of

God all the days of my life?” Is our greatest desire now

really to spend all day in shul on Yom Kippur?

I once heard R. Moshe Benovitz, director of the

NCSY Summer Kollel, cite an analysis of this psalm by

R. Elchanan Samet that can help us understand how to

relate to it during this season as we begin to prepare for

the Yamim Nora’im. R. Samet points out that while

the initial verses demonstrate boundless faith and con-

fidence in divine protection, David’s certainty abruptly

disappears halfway through the psalm. Suddenly he

exclaims, “Hear my voice God when I call out, have

mercy on me and answer me!” “Do not hide Your face

from me, do not push aside your servant in anger; You

have always been my help—do not forsake me, do not

abandon me!” David’s assurance has vanished, and in-

stead he issues a desperate, piercing cry to God, whose

presence he does not feel and whose anger he fears.

R. Samet argues that the two halves of the

psalm refer to two different religious experiences. The

way I would put it is that the first half stakes out our

goal - by Yom Kippur we want to be in a position

where we have achieved that level of bitachon and

closeness with God. The second half returns to where

we stand now at the beginning of Elul, suddenly awak-

ened and frightened by the first shofar blast, realizing

that we may not feel God’s presence as intensely as we

ought to, and conceiving the work cut out for us over

the coming month. David concludes the psalm by steel-

ing himself to the mission at hand, exhorting himself

(according to Radak and Metzudat David) to redouble

his spiritual efforts to seek God. Twice David says

”קוה אל ה' ” and Rashi explains that if we do not see

our tefilot immediately answered, we must persist in

prayer rather than surrender hope. Ready or not, we

have entered the season of teshuva, and God-willing

with earnestness and dedication we will all succeed in

answering David’s call.

Dear Friend:

Well, it is that time of year again, which means that the chagim are approaching and so is

the Yom Kippur Appeal. Let me first start with a thank you to those of you who not only

participated in the appeal last year, but allowed us to run the most successful campaign in

years.

This year, we once again anticipate the upcoming chagim as a time of great hope, mingled

with great responsibility. Reflecting on the past year, I am prouder than ever to be a

member of The Jewish Center. Our synagogue continues to play a significant role as a

leader on the Upper West Side and in the Jewish community, and our incredible clergy

and lay leaders continue to inspire us and guide us. But the responsibility lies with each

of us to ensure that The Jewish Center can continue to maintain its high level of excel-

lence.

I ask you to use this time to think about what The Jewish Center means to you, and take

this opportunity to give tzedakah in the merit of our tefilot for the coming year.

Your donation, at any level, can make a real difference!

A terrific committee of members has volunteered to help with this effort. In the coming

weeks we will be in touch with you to discuss how vital this Appeal is to maximize the

potential of our Jewish Center.

To make it easier you can donate on our website or feel free to be in touch with Polina in

the shul office at 212-724-2700 x107 to make payment arrangements. And of course, feel

free to be in touch with me any time.
