The JC Youth Department is honored to be
partnering with Bikkur in the Home to enhance and connect the lives of our
children and JC homebound seniors. Over the past few weeks, our children
began learning about this essen!al mitzvah with Rabbi Dovid Zirkind and Rabbi
Daniel Fridman in addi!on to an interac!ve session with Bikkur
Cholim leaders Shira Silton and Andrew Wigod. Last Shabbat, Parshat Vaera,
seventeen children in grades 5-8 met with Bikkur in the Home leader Esther
Rimokh for a detailed orienta!on. Following the orienta!on, the children and
some parents accompanied leaders from Bikkur in the Home for visits with
seniors all over the UWS. Upon returning to The JC from their visits, the children
gathered to learn from each other and reflect upon their experiences.
We will be working closely with Bikkur in the Home to strengthen this connec-

“I’ve got good news and bad news. Which would you like to hear first?” Social Scientists have often wondered whether delivering bad news is better done first, last or if the order has no impact on the recipi-ent of the information. The Talmud cites a series of ancient expressions one of which is: מילתא גנאה דאית ביך קדים אמרה– if there is something negative, say it first. (Bava Kam-ma 92v) The origin of this expression, the Gemara goes on to explain, is our Parsha. Eliezer, Avraham’s faithful servant is taken by Rivkah for a formal introduc-tion with her family. Sensing the excite-ment of the moment, Lavan races to greet him and the family graciously welcomes him to a warm meal, but Eliezer hesitates.
“They placed before him to eat and he said ‘I will not eat until I have spoken my word’. They said, ‘speak’. And he said ‘I am a slave of Avraham.’” (Bereishit 24:33-35)
Rather then making an offer imme-diately, Eliezer finds it necessary for the family to understand who he is, a simple slave delivering a message. Later he would elaborate on Avraham’s success and wealth and the great privilege it would be to marry Yitzchak, but first he was open and honest about his stature in the social structure of the family. The need for full disclosure re-moves any question of dishonesty on his part. Eliezer could not benefit from a meal fit for a king until they knew he was slave. Only then could he accept their generosity.
If Eliezer is to be commended for his forthcoming approach, it should make
us wonder why he did not tell Rivkah who he was when they first met. On multiple occasions, Eliezer asks Rivkah who she is and where she comes from, but not once does he tell her he is a slave. Indeed it is this distinction that highlights what his goals were in finding the perfect mate for Yitzchak. “The servant ran to greet her… And she said ‘drink my master’.” (Chayeh Sarah 24:17-18) The Torah emphasizes the extent of Rivkah’s kindness that she had not intention of limiting herself to the pres-tigious alone. Withholding who exactly he was, was necessary to gauge Rivkah’s in-tention. But even Eliezer is surprised by the result. “And it was when the camels fin-ished drinking, the man took out his gifts…” (24:22) In her selfless chessed, Riv-kah was able to not only look past Eliezer’s limitations but also was able to raise him above his own preconceived notion of self- worth. In one short narrative Eliezer went from being a servant, to a human being, to a master.
Chessed is often seen as the capabil-ity to replenish what someone is lacking; to help return someone to his or her previous state. But the chessed of Rivkah was far more ambitious. In meeting Eliezer she in-spired him; she gave him more than he was looking for by teaching him just how much he was worth as an individual. Rivkah serves as the ultimate reminder of how much good we can accomplish and the power we have to uplift those in need of support.
