This year we are expecting Webelos from Pack 1074, and perhaps other packs, to join us on Saturday. We want to do all we can to encourage them (and their parents) to join Troop 264 when they bridge over from Cub Scouts in a few months. Be courteous, take the time to show them how we operate, and encourage them to help.

Troop 264 Dues Are Due!

It's that time of year again! Time to collect troop dues. Dues are $50.00 per scout, per year. The adults are asked to pay $10.00. Each patrol has a responsible adult designated to collect dues from the scouts (this includes first year scouts) and return them in an envelope to Mrs.Wilbur. . Please make out checks to: BSA Troop 264. Questions concerning dues can be directed to: Gina Wilbur (301) 774-9287.

Scouting for Food - November 10 Scouting for Food bag distribution to the neighborhoods is November 3rd and collection is November 10th. Troop 264 will run the collection point on the 10th at the Olney Safeway.. We will be collecting from 9:30AM to about 4:00PM. Most collection usually occurs between 11:00 and 2:30. The TLC and Scoutmaster will determine actual patrol schedules. Individuals may work more than their patrol shift.

Popcorn Sales

Troop 264 is selling Boy Scout popcorn again this year. The order forms will be distributed at the Oct. 8 troop meeting. The order forms should be turned in to Mr. Matyas by Monday, November 12. Popcorn will be distributed at the meeting on December 3. In order not to compete with the Cub Scout Packs, the Troop will not conduct group sales. Popcorn should be sold to family and close friends. The Troop also will not participate in the prize program. If you have any questions, contact Mr. Matyas at 301-570-0610 or [email protected].

Navy Game - November 17

The Navy game (vs Northern Illinois) is on Saturday, Nov 17th starting at 3:30 pm. We are going to tour the Naval Academy led by you-know-who (Liam O’Lone). So, we will getting there early in the af-ternoon. Don’t know the specifics yet, but keep your eyes on this spot. Thank you very much for your ticket orders. Tickets have been purchased. We are in the endzone again. If your plans have changed and you can’t go,please let me know. Got questions? Contact Keith Evans (301-260-1042 or [email protected])

National Museum of the American Indian – December 8 - 9

A trip is being planned to the Museum of the American Indian, on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Fol-lowing the museum stop, camping is planned at Greenbelt National Park. The Hawk patrol will be tak-ing a count of those wanting to attend by Nov. 19, so be thinking about it. We would also like to know if you are interested in earning the Indian Lore Merit Badge. The museum is open 10am-5:30pm. The special event on the 8th is Return to a Native Place: Algon-quian Peoples of the Chesapeake. Meet the Native peoples of the Chesapeake Bay region–what is now Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware–through photographs, maps, ceremonial and eve-ryday objects, and interactives. This compact exhibition educates visitors on the continued Native pres-ence in the region, and provides an overview of the history and events from the 1600s to the present that have impacted the lives of the Nanticoke, Powhatan, and Piscataway tribes. The exhibition was curated by Gabrielle Tayac, Ph.D. (Piscataway). There will also be exhibitions by Native American artists and craftsmen.

Wreath and Ornament Sales

Please sell wreaths! Yes, get your scout credits and support the troop. Each wreath costs 20 bucks and each ornament costs 22 buckoes. Or buy both for the low price of $40! Each wreath is 25 inches in diameter. It has white tipped pine cones, jingle bells, and a gold backed red velvet bow. The “2007 White House Ornament” honors the Grover Cleveland administration. Grover Cleveland was the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. It features Cleveland’s White House Wedding to Frances Folsom. The gold plated frame measured 3” x2-7/8” and “is beautifully gift boxed”. “Purchases are tax deductible.” “When I was going door-to-door last year, there were many buyers. One lady told me, “Every year Boy Scout Troop 264 would come around and sell wreaths. I would always buy a wreath. Scouts would be competing to be the first to my door to sell the neighborhood wreaths. Then they stopped coming.” Then she gladly purchased a wreath. This is simply sad. Please sell wreaths!” -Jim Bickel

Sharp Street Church Food Bank

Only 45 minutes of work this time, since there weren’t as many donations of food to sort through. But the scouts’ help was much appreciated nonetheless. The next Food Bank service opportunity will be at 4 PM on November 16, 2007. Daniel Gardner’s Eagle Project August 2007

My Eagle Project consisted of painting the hallway and six rooms of Redland Baptist Church's Children's wing. The preparations (not planning) for painting took almost as long as the painting. All of the rooms were covered in bulletin boards and posters, all of which needed to be taken down, along with window blinds and kick guards along the floor. Then all the holes in the wall had to be spackled and sanded to make even for the painting. All of the trim, such as door frames and windows, were a dark green, so they all had to be first covered with a primer. The church had wanted each room to be two colors, and every two rooms would again have a different color. This made painting a little bit harder, as we had to try not to mix colors on edges. The painting actually took about two weekends of workdays. I had both scouts and church volunteers to help with all aspects of the work. The scouts that helped were: James Bickel, James Kerrick, and Kevin Hillman.

Generic Campout

On the weekend of _________________, _____, ___ scouts and adults went to ____________, MD. We left St. John’s at __:__ and arrived at ____________ at __:__. Then it rained. It rained some more. After we were soaked, it kept raining. As we set up our tents inside-out, it rained. Mr. _________ let us go to __________ where it rained. We went swimming in a puddle, and it stopped raining, but as soon as we got out, it started to rain again. By now we wanted to be packed up in a box and mailed home. We couldn’t so we stayed in our tents all day admiring our outside-in walls. By now it was time for the campfire which Mr. __________ dragged us through the mud to perform our skits. The ________ patrol did the __________ __________ skit and the _________ patrol did the _________ ___________ skit and the ________ patrol sang “______ _________.” The best skit was done by the _________ patrol who died on stage. After a boring speech by Mr. __________, we went to bed frozen and wet. In the morning, we rubbed the ice from between our toes, and warmed ourselves by eating some ice. Others of us huddled around the stove, trying to thaw out our fingers. Now it was time for the church service, where we mumbled Cumbayah. “Let’s go swimming,” someone suggested. He was hanged and shot by Mr. ________. The we packed ourselves into our cars and compared our runny noses. When we got home, we took showers with boiling water and slept until Thursday.

Appomattox Court House, VA October 6 and 7

On October 6 and 7, 2007, Troop 264 was off on another one of Mr. Irvin’s Excellent Adventures. This time the trip was to Appomattox Court House, site of Confederate General Lee’s surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. We left early from Olney for the ride to Central Virginia. The sky was initially gray but gradually cleared to a fine hot October day. Early-arriving scouts and adults had the opportunity to wander through some of the buildings in the village, including Meeks’ General Store and the McLean House, site of the actual surrender. It didn’t take more than 20 minutes before Jeremy had locked himself in a cell in the New Jail, with the cell door solidly jammed, and fellow scouts unable to get him out. Once Jeremy was sprung, everyone collected by the Court House and the 6 mile hike began. We crossed fields and the road to the east of the village, headed for the site of Lee’s Headquarters, with scouts scribbling frantically on blue papers the answers from the wayside plaques. From there the

trail led through woods and fields with the occasional rest stop. The unofficial Spider Web Patrol, with Daniel, Ryan, Jeremy, Jim, and Conor, led the way, using sticks or body or face to clear web strands frequently strung across the forest path. Eventually we returned to Appomattox Court House from the west along the old Richmond-Lynchville Stage Road. Scouts and adults had a chance to look around the village for some 40 minutes before the Great Scout Roundup.

We then travelled to Holliday State Park where we set up camp. While Michael and William prepared supper,

Five-Lantern-Jim kept the camp illuminated with the gentle glow of a supernova. It was bright enough that I didn’t need a flashlight for at least half of the trail through the woods between the campsite and bathhouse (really!).

If you could get away from the bright lights, the Milky Way was plainly visible directly overhead. But by that time the scouts had another project in mind, the obligatory campfire. Needless to say, fire and scouts are inseparable. With cooking grease and a gallon bag of dryer lint, a fire was born. Next morning Conor and Patrick made breakfast, one of those eggy concoctions scouts get used to. But Very Good. Jim cleaned up while the rest of us packed gear. On the way back some of us stopped off at the Sailor’s Creek battleground (also spelled Saylors), where General Lee lost

some 7,000 troops just three days before the surrender at Appomattox. Mr. Irvin gets the credit for a great weekend! ~ Mr. Dale Bickel

Appomattox was a surrender to a fun weekend. We woke up early (I thought weekends were for sleep) to leave St. John’s at about 6:50 AM. We arrived there only to wait a while to let the slower drivers catch up. Then we took our six mile hike. As always, we actually had to learn. We learned about the near end of the Civil War. We learned how General Grant (Union/Federalist) outsmarted and forced General Lee (Confederate) to surrender. Along the trail, the front was not very fun due to the spider webs every three feet and the half-inch wide red and yellow spiders sitting on a few of the webs. After hours of infuriating the spiders, we get back to our cars and drive to the camp. We set up camp,

cook dinner, have a campfire, and go to bed. Next morning, we eat breakfast, break camp, and drive home. ~ Jim Bickel

Merit Badge Day at Camp Snyder – February 2, 2008

NCAC will hold a Merit Badge Day on February 2, 2008 at Camp Snyder, which is located near the junction of Interstate I-66 West with U.S. Route 15, roughly an hour distant from Olney. A list of available merit badges will be posted on the NCAC website (www.boyscouts-ncac.org) in mid-January. Scouts should arrange their own transportation to and from camp, as this activity will be done individually and not as a troop. This is a great way to pick up a merit badge in a short time. New scouts as well as older scouts, please check it out.

BSA 100th Anniversary National Logo Contest

The winning design will inspire the national symbol for this important BSA milestone. Zack Hopkins’ Trolley Museum Eagle Project

September 8, 15th and 29th

Thanks to everyone who helped me out with my Eagle Project at the Trolley Museum over the past month. There were rumors that were close to coming to life that Kevin Hillman said he was going to get a union together if this project went on much longer! This is no longer the case because I’ve finished my Eagle project. The following scouts earned service hours ( ): Scouts: Jimmy Bickel (4) Kevin Hillman (5 ½) Zack Hopkins (20) Tom Irvin (2 ½) Anthony Justus (2) Kevin Lea (3) Justin Stine (2) Holland McCabe (7) Ryan McFarlane (3 ½) Jason Sherman (2 ½) Patrick Vaughan (3) Ben Hopkins (6) (Zack’s brother) Jenna Hopkins (8) (Zack’s sister) Scouters: Mr. Justus (2) Mr. Irvin (2 ½) Mr. Sherman (2 ½) Mrs. Hopkins (20) I’d also like to thank McTavish Tree Service for delivering free mulch to the site and to Mr. Rucker and Mr. Thompson for making sure the gate was unlocked so we could work on my project. ~ Zack Hopkins

showed up. They set up in no rain. Then comes the violent storm. High gusts of wind threatened every troop’s dining flies. The troop next to us had eight people holding it down. We tied ours down, and I staked the fly, tables, and trash can down with over twenty stakes. The wind died down, the rain continued, we drifted (or ran) to our tents and fell asleep. The rain halted at about midnight. The majority of our troop awoke before dawn. Our cooks ever so kindly cooked us a breakfast, which was eaten quickly. We went to flags, and started our activities. Among the activities were axe and knife throwing, archery, BB gunning, an obstacle course, a water bucket obstacle course, rock wall climbing, ring the bell hammering, log dragging, two man log sawing, and sitting around camp. Lunch, then more activities until Dinner. Some called it Chinese. Some called it Mexican. Others called it stew. It was a spicy combination of sausage, stuff that looked like dog food, and Old Bay. It was good. After that, we had dishes, then free time. We didn’t have a fire pan, so we substituted a one-mantle propane lantern as a campfire. Then came the real campfire. All the troops converged around a fire pit stacked with wooden pallets. After a while, they got it started, and we watched the skits. We then went back to our campsite and sat around our makeshift campfire/lantern and listened to the explosions and screaming coming from the Field of Screams. We go to bed. We get up. We break down and leave as the sun rises.

Get credit for Troop activities…

It’s important that everyone who participates in Troop 264 campouts, trips, and community service activities gets credit for their hard work. The Signaler provides the permanent record of everyone who attends these events. Patrol leaders need to take responsibility for collecting the names of participants in their patrols and send those lists, preferably by email, to the Signaler staff by the monthly deadline. E-mail lists to [email protected]. This month’s deadline: Friday, November 23.

Do You Need to Review Your Knots?

If you need to review your knots prior to your next BOR or the next campout, check out the site below. It is very good for visually demonstrating how to tie knots. Troop Activity Policy Please be reminded that it is troop policy (and common courtesy) for a scout or scouter to pay the costs associated with an event he or she has signed up for but did not attend, without being asked. No-shows increase the costs to the troop and the participants, require the troop to reserve unneeded space and

transport excess equipment, and results in wasted food and materials. We realize that situations inevitably will occur that prevent a scout from attending events, and ask that the scout or scouter contact the person organizing the event right away. If the conflict is raised early enough, adjustments can often be made where food has not yet been purchased or reservations have not been finalized.

Adopt A Soldier Program It’s hard to believe, but the holiday season is quickly approaching. Many of our adopted soldiers will be spending them away from home and their loved ones. We need your help to make their holidays, and everyday, as pleasant as possible. Scouts – Please write letters to our adopted soldiers with words of encouragement and gratitude for all of their hard work. They like to hear good news stories from home. Tell them about our troop and the great scout activities we do. Give your cards/letters to Mrs. Simpson (Shark Patrol) and she will take care of sending them for you. If you need any stationery, see Mrs. Simpson! Parents – Please consider donating a few items for inclusion in our monthly care packages. For a list of suggested items or to coordinate pick-up/delivery, please contact Mrs. Simpson at (301) 774-1728, cell (301) 512-5439, or send an e-mail to [email protected]. We received two big bags of goodies for our adopted K9 units in Kuwait from Dr. Frederic Tinetti of Burtonsville Animal Hospital (15543 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD); and from Ms. Julie Klipsch of Bark Olney (16822 Georgia Avenue, Olney, MD). I would also like to thank the Karitis and Justus families for their donations of dentabones and chew toys for our K9 care packages. The packages will be shipped out with photos of our pups – Harley Karitis, Summer Justus, and Maggie Simpson. Your participation in our Adopt A Soldier Program is extremely important and your efforts are greatly appreciated. Please continue to keep the young men and women who sacrifice so much for your freedom and for our country in your thoughts and in your hearts, especially during the upcoming holiday season.

----------------------------- Hi Josey! Just wanted to let you know your package got here the other day. As always, it was perfect! You don’t know how welcome the bug repellent stuff is. A wonderful little mosquito has taken up residence in my residence and insists on dining on me every evening. Now I have something for him! HA! Thanks again for everything. I really appreciate it! Dear Simpsons, Thank you very much for your recent care package. I am enjoying the granola bars, fruit chews, and magazines. What a nice and unexpected surprise! The heat is finally starting to cool off, but that means that the rains are here now. So far…just a few showers. This entire place will become a huge mud pit in a few weeks though. Still, the cold and rain is preferable to the 130s heat. Work is very busy again, but not because of enemy activity. Several health care providers got sent to other locations, and 2 of them are on mid tour leave. Things should calm down in another 2 months. Hope you are all doing well back in MD, DC. Dave Bray ------------------------------ Dear Troop 264: Thank you for your recent letter. The dogs serving with US troops perform a great service under uncom-fortable and often dangerous conditions. These animals, who did not volunteer, serve faithfully beside their brave human companions. Though it’s unfortunate that anyone, human or canine, is in harm’s way, it’s great that Troop 264 wants to do something for them, and we at Bark would like to help! We have some items we would like to donate. We look forward to working with you, and thank you for letting us be part of your project. Julie Klipsch Bark Olney -------------------------------- Josey & Family, We want to thank you and Troop 264 for your support of our Sean’s Kids project. We will be sending “the beanies” out early next week along with some other supplies for the kids. The work you are doing in supporting the troops should be commended as we know first had what it means to all of them. Thanks again, Mike Egan (Read more about Sean’s Kids project at http://seanskids.blogspot.com) -------------------------------

Dutch Oven Cooking Tips When cooking with a Dutch Oven, use the following “bottom – top” coal ratio for charcoal briquettes: Baking 1:3 – requires most of the heat on top of the oven Frying, boiling, simmering, stewing 1:0 – heat should come from the bottom only

Heat is most evenly distributed when coals are placed in a circular pattern in the bottom and a checkerboard pattern (or distributed evenly) on the lid. Altitude affects temperatures inside the oven, so a thermometer may be useful. Depending on the size of the oven, each briquette adds between 10 and 20 degrees of heat. ~ From the Summer 2007 edition of Your National Forests, by the National Forest Foundation, Butte, MT.

District Roundtable

Our Boy Scout Roundtables feature informative discussions on topics from youth leadership training, using OA more effectively in your troop, and summer camp experiences. Each month Bill Lanson and his crew provide wonderful presentations, from wood carving to dutch oven cooking, to help your unit leaders provide new ides and opportunities for your troop. This year we are also asking each troop to help out by giving a presentation on a favorite activity or camping location that your troop does. Come see what great new locations your troop might want to visit! Roundtables are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm at the Montgomery General Hospital. Be sure to check the front desk for the room number of the meeting. The rooms will change, but the meeting is now at Montgomery General Hospital. To find out more about the Roundtable, or to sign up to make a presentation, contact Bill Lanson at (301) 774-8040 or [email protected].

Who does this remind you of????

INFORMATION PAGE Attention: Board of Review (BOR) Procedures

A few years ago we set up a new procedure for scouts to follow for requesting Board of Reviews. Being a large troop, we needed to give the adults sitting on the BORs some lead-time. Recently the procedure has been sliding and the adults are getting short notice because of last minute BORs being scheduled. Therefore we are restating our policy. FORGOT THE PROCEDURE? NO PROBLEM – It is almost always on the last page of each Signaler edition. Also, you can look at any past edition of the Signaler for this information.

Signaler Submittal Deadlines: Information Due to Reporters: November 23 Signaler Distribution Date: December 2

Articles Due to Signaler Staff: Tues. November 27 at the Signaler Meeting – No articles accepted after November 27.

BOR Any scout needing a Board of Review should call Walt Greenspon @ (301-774-5394) no later than two Sundays (8 days) before the scheduled Board of Review. Failure to give proper notification will delay your BOR until the next month. Get your Scoutmaster Conference prior to calling Mr. Greenspon. If your scout is scheduled for the BOR, he must bring an adult with him. That adult is needed to sit on a BOR for another scout. This way we can accommodate all scouts striving for advancement. Dress Code for BOR: Class “A” shirt, neckerchief, slide and scout pants (khaki or black pants can be substituted). A scout hat is preferred.

ADVANCEMENT INFORMATION PAGE

BOARD of REVIEW (BOR)

Any scout needing a Board of Review should call Mr. Greenspon @ (301-774-5394) no later than two Sundays (8 days) before the scheduled Board of Review. Failure to give proper notification will delay your BOR for a month.

If your scout is scheduled for a BOR, he must bring an adult with him. That adult is needed to sit on a BOR for another scout. This way we can accommodate all scouts striving for advancement.

Scout dress code for BOR will include Class “A” shirt, neckerchief, slide, and scout pants (khaki or black pants can be substituted). A scout hat is preferred.

SCOUT SPIRIT for ADVANCEMENT We all recognize that Scout Spirit is hard to evaluate. We know Scout Spirit includes being helpful and cheerful, but it is more than that…it’s giving back. In an effort to assist Patrol dads in recognizing Scout Spirit, the following guidelines are offered. Our troop believes that prior to each advancement, participation in the following activities exemplify the essences of Scout Spirit:

• A minimum of 1 nursing home visit • Participation in at least 1 fundraiser • At least 4 overnight outings per year

• Good deeds done outside of scouts The Patrol Dad, not a senior scout, is responsible for signing off on Scout Spirit prior to your Scoutmaster Conference.

SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCES Any scout needing a Scoutmaster Conference for advancement up through 1st class, needs to contact one of the following for a conference: Mr. Kennedy 301-774-5014 Mr. Greenspon 301-774-5394 Mr. Laing 301-570-4235 Mr. Long 301-924-4365 Mr. Pitts 301-774-3208 Mr. Predoehl 301-774-0974 Mr. Culbertson 301-774-7049 Mr. Zuccaro 301-774-0824 Scoutmaster Conferences for Star, Life, and Eagle must be held with Mr. Bogan - (301-774-2768). Preparation for the scout’s BOR must include being prepared to answer skill, citizenship, first aid, and merit badge questions.

BOR for STAR and LIFE SCOUT ADVANCEMENTS

While ropes and compasses are provided for younger ranks, by the time you are ready for Star and Life advancement, you should be responsible enough to bring your own knot rope and compass for your BOR. We are requiring all scouts who are advancing to Star or Life to bring a knot rope and compass to their BOR.

LIFE and EAGLE SCOUTS as ADVISORY BOR MEMBERS

If you are a Life or Eagle Scout and would like to sit on a Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, or Star BOR, as a “Technical Expert”, call Mr. Greenspon on (301-774-5394). You would be the fourth person on the Board. While you wouldn’t have a vote, you would have input into the decision-making process and add invaluable knowledge and insight by asking questions that perhaps scouters wouldn’t think to ask. This is a great way to give back to and maintain the quality of your troop.
