Playground Update

Exciting news that we had a start-up meeting today for our new playground that will be built behind the library. Smiling Minds

This week our entire staff trained in the Smiling Minds Program.

“Mindfulness has many benefits, some of which include reduced stress, anxiety and overwhelm; improved sleep and an increased ability to regulate strong emotions. present with others. This in turn helps you provide the children you care for with the emotional support they need, rather than inadvertently pass on your own feelings of stress and anxiety.”

Some teachers are already using elements of it but now we will all have the appropriate training to implement it fully across the school. We were fortunate to be successful in an application for the Department of Education to pay for us to be trained. This wellbeing program is useful for children and adults. We plan to run a parent session in Term 2. More information to come on this.

Thank you to The Manly Sea Eagles

Many thanks to the Manly Sea Eagles players who talked to our students in Years 3-6 last week. The importance of a healthy active lifestyle, respect for ourselves and others and taking care of ourselves physically and mentally was a powerful and important message. Thank you to the Manly Sea Eagles for providing us with this opportunity.

Kitchen Garden News

Harvest Time

Silverbeet, eggplants and parsley have made its way to the garden along with the fresh eggs this week.

Weirdest Vegie in the Patch:

Zucchini Trombonino

This really long trombone shaped zucchini is growing on a trellis. It is AMAZING come and see it for yourself. It is near the rose arch. It can grow up to 1m but we will harvest it soon and send it off to the kitchen to become a delicious meal.

Chickens vs Brush Turkeys

Rosie, Autumn and Scratchy are loving all the attention from the garden lessons. They are currently the object of research as chickens are being compared to the humble but prehistoric Brush Turkey. We are fortunate that we can study both these two species at Seaforth PS.

Some fun Brush Turkey facts:

- It is the male Brush Turkeys who build the huge nest.

- Brush Turkeys are like reptiles in the way they bury their eggs in a soil mound to incubate.

- They are related to the prehistoric birds like the Moa

- In many places in Australia brush turkeys are totems for Aboriginal people

The Frog Pond

Michelle and the gardeners have been busy creating a new habitat. Stay tuned for the official opening of the amphibious precinct soon.

Clean Up Seaforth

Clean Up Australia was on last weekend and some of the students said they participated in community events. Students also helped with a playground school clean up. As most rubbish found was small pieces of plastic it was discussed that a way of reducing this litter was to stop bringing plastic wrapping and small chip bags to school. Bring only waste free lunches and take rubbish home to be recycled.

Kitchen News

Another exciting cook up in the Seaforth Kitchen.

Students made Baba Ganoush, with Organic Eggplants from the Seaforth Garden. They also made Flat Bread Crackers, Greek Dolmades and Silverbeet Triangles. All these delicious snacks are easy to make at home, for healthy and waste free lunch boxes.

Students also learned about additives in processed food and talked about the impact additives can have on our bodies. We used the app Chemical Maze (Cm), to explore food additives and which potential effect they can have on our well-being and health.

We also would like to acknowledge our partner “The Source” for providing wonderful recipe booklets (to be found at the office desk at Yatama). They have also helped us to arrange a display of reusable container, flasks, thermos, etc. to encourage a zero waste free lifestyle.

Come and have a look at the display, which can be found in the Seaforth Kitchen or visit the Store in Stocklands Balgowlah.

Bonus: 15% of your purchase at The Source, for anyone who volunteers during a lesson in our Seaforth Garden or Kitchen.

Recipes of the Fortnight

Roasted Eggplant

Ingredients

2 small-to-medium eggplants oil Method

Preheat the oven to 240 degrees

Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the eggplant from sticking to the pan.

Halve the eggplants lengthwise and brush the cut sides lightly with olive oil.

Place them in the prepared pan with the halved sides down.

Roast the eggplant until the interior is very tender throughout and the skin is collapsing, about 35 to 40 minutes

Flip the eggplants over and scoop out the flesh with a large spoon, leaving the skin behind.

Baba Ganoush

Ingredients

roasted eggplants 2 medium cloves of garlic, crushed 2 tablespoons lemon juice ¼ cup tahini ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley ¾ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground cumin Pinch of smoked paprika, for garnish

Serving suggestions: warmed or toasted pita wedges, carrot sticks, bell pepper strips, cucumber slices, etc.

Method

Place a mesh strainer over a mixing bowl, then transfer the eggplant flesh to the strainer and discard the skins. Pick out any stray bits of eggplant skin and discard. You want to remove as much moisture from the eggplant here as possible, so let the eggplant rest for a few minutes and shake/stir the eggplant to release some more moisture.

Discard all of the eggplant drippings, drain and wipe out the bowl, and place the eggplant into the bowl.

Add the garlic and lemon juice to the eggplant and stir vigorously with a fork until the eggplant breaks down.

Add the tahini to the bowl and stir until it’s incorporated.

Seaforth Public School

37 Kempbridge Avenue, Seaforth 2092 Phone: 99481694 Web: www.seaforthpublicschool.com

While stirring, slowly drizzle in the olive oil. Continue stirring until the mixture is pale and creamy, and use your fork to break up any particularly long strings of eggplant.

Stir in the parsley, salt and cumin.

Season to taste with more salt

Transfer the baba ganoush to a serving bowl and lightly drizzle olive oil on top.

Finally sprinkle parsley and smoked paprika on top.

Serve with accompaniments of your choice. It’s also great on sandwiches!

Cannellini Dip and Flat Bread Crackers Dip Ingredients 1 can cannellini beans (rinsed and drained) 1 garlic clove (sliced) 1tbsp parsley 1 tsp lemon juice Pinch of salt and pepper Method Add all ingredients into bowl Blend Flatbread crackers Ingredients Flatbread Olive oil spray Salt Cumin (optional) Method

Preheat oven 180C Place baking paper on baking tray Brush flatbread with tiny bit of oil Season with spices/salt Cut into strips or squares Place on baking tray Bake for 5min (until golden) Turn over Bake for another 5min Transfer onto cooling rack

Tofu Silverbeet Triangles Ingredients 150g hard tofu ½ onion diced 1 garlic clove crushed ½ tbs paprika 2 cups silverbeet (stalks removed) chopped Pastry Method Fry onion and garlic in olive oil for 5min Add tofu (crumbled) for 3min Add silverbeet Cook until wilted Use pastry Cut in 5 cm strips

Band News

Both bands are off and racing and looking forward to our Intensive Day on March 29. Vanessa Miles has done a considerable amount of work in the last few weeks compiling an up to date tutor list and allocating tutoring rooms at the school. Thank you Vanessa! Everyone should have a private tutor by now and should be working on band pieces with their tutors. Even if your child is studying for an AMEB exam, it will help the Band Program enormously if your child is able to look at their band pieces for five minutes of each lesson. Maddy & Rob have sent home information on what the children should be practising, it could be helpful to show that to your child’s tutor. If you don’t have a tutor, please let us know ASAP and we can help point you in the right direction.

Key Dates for the Diary: March 29, 12-5pm - Band Intensive Day April 1, 2.15 - Celebration of Learning Assembly - PB plays April 9, 9.30am - Easter Hat Parade, TB first school performance (Hot Cross Buns) May 4, 7.30pm - Term 2 Band Meeting at the RSL
