I would like to congratulate Jeremy White who is our new P&C President and also congratulate and thank all the parents who have been elected to executive positions. I would like to thank on behalf of the school community, Richard Williams, who is our outgoing P&C President. Reading Buddies has Commenced

Our Reading Buddies program commenced this week on Monday morning in the room next door to our music room that we now call the Kempbridge Learning Hub. This program buddies up Year 6 students with Year 1 students to support their reading before school in a volunteer capacity. It not only helps our students become better readers, it forms bonds between students and fosters a sense of community and doing things for others. I am so proud of all our Year 6 students that have chosen to be tutors and our Year 1 students who are committed to the program. Thank you to our wonderful learning and support teachers; Ms McLellan, Mrs Bye and Mrs Pratt for providing this wonderful opportunity for our students.

Term Invoices and Permissions

The Term 1 invoice and the note to sign for permissions have both been sent home. Please return the signed permission note as soon as possible. If you are experiencing financial hardship please do not hesitate to contact me to make arrangements to support with the Term 1 invoice costs.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an evidence-based whole school program to improve learning outcomes for all students. PBL • addresses the diverse academic and social needs of every student to support them to be successful; • enables schools to establish a continuum of supports that are intensified to meet student need; • is team driven, using a problem solving approach that engages the whole school staff, students and

parents/carers; • establishes positive social expectations for all in the school community; and • provides a framework for the school and its community to collectively support the wellbeing of every

Congratulations to our new P&C President Jeremy White! Thanks to all the volunteers, event organisers, gardeners, canteen and uniform shop teams for allowing us to do so much over the last few years – it’s fantastic to see air-conditioning, Astro turf, refurbished school entrances and new landscaping. Thank you to the P&C Executive members who are staying on in 2019, and many thanks to those departing Michelle French, Ken Douglas Hill and Alex Cowie.

A special thanks personally to Jenni Jordan for doing so much quiet unassuming work behind the scenes to keep businesses and indeed the President and Treasurer ticking along.

Thank you all, I’ve enjoyed my time as P&C President and look forward to seeing what our new team achieve in 2019.

Trudy Alcorn also thanked Richard for all his work and open communication. We do need people to volunteer for co-ordinator roles for fundraisers throughout the year. Please email [email protected] if you can help. The P&C has used a lot of its funds recently such as providing $35,000 for the new air conditioning system at Kempbridge which was long overdue. Other expenses include creating an AstroTurf for Yatama and monies set aside to augment the new classrooms, including a playground at Kempbridge.

Update from Principal Trudy Alcorn - New air conditioners are greatly appreciated and are a hit with teachers in the staff room

-The end is in sight for various building works at Yatama campus which includes upgrades for disability access, new turf and remediation. - Hilary McKimm Is our instructional leader to support our teachers to provide quality education. She has a lot of experience particularly in literacy. She’ll help staff improve the way they teach particularly in writing.

Kitchen Garden News

What's the science buzz in the Kitchen Garden? Every lesson in the Kitchen Garden enables students to interact with a diverse range of plants and animals. Our native bees are most popular as they are 'stingless' and most days you can observe them pollinating flowers for the cucumbers, pumpkins, melons, eggplants and corn. Best garden pets ever and good to study. This term Stage 2 has started their science lessons based on the inquiry question "How do we group living things?" With visitors like kookaburras, ringtail possums, brush turkeys, rosellas, magpies, tawny frogmouths, bees, leaf curl spiders, worms and a gazillion slaters... students have a lot to classify. Stage 3 have been looking at "How do physical conditions affect the survival of living things?" Teaching the Living World component of the Science syllabus in the garden is a natural fit and the students will be

Kitchen News

This week we have officially commenced our "Make Dinnertime Matter" program. According to the Make Dinnertime Matter Project:

We are not just what we eat. We are a product of how we eat.

When we eat, and with whom we eat. For most Australian families, the hours between 3pm and 6 pm are a constant juggle of work, commuting, after-school commitments, and homework. As a result, quality family time, especially around meals, is suffering. That’s why we are launching the Dinner Time Project, a social initiative, co-founded by Flinders University and Nutrition Australia. After conducting research with families, we designed a curriculum based on three common barriers stopping them from sitting down at night and eating together: a lack of time, a lack of energy and motivation, and uncertainty and pressure over what to prepare. Our project is designed to help families overcome these barriers in a fun and convenient way.

By making dinnertime matter, we aim to:

• Give families a more mindful and shared experience • Involve children in the cooking and eating process • Encourage families to make cooking and eating together a priority • Contribute to the holistic well-being of the family • Give kids confidence, connectedness, and useful life skills

Students in Years 3 and 4 have been given additional homework activities aligned to the curriculum, based around dinner time.

Over the last two weeks, students have created delicious Pitta Margarita Pizza, Corn Chips, Hummus, Szechuan Style Roasted Eggplant and Fried Rice. They learnt how to handle knives safely and learnt to us one of two grips, when chopping, slicing and cutting. Furthermore, they experimented with complimenting one another on the fabulous food, their leadership skills and cooperation. If you are curious and would like to join one of our cooking sessions, please feel free to come along or contact me by email at [email protected] . We would be delighted to have you. It is a wonderful opportunity to bond with your child/ren, the school community and find out more about our dinnertime project.

School Banking

Tuesdays: 8.45-9.10 in the Uniform Shop

Seaforth Public School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2019 are: • Scented Stackable Highlighters* • Snowy Origami Set* • Icicle Slapband Ruler • Yeti Fluffly Notepad • Arctic Owl Fluffy Keyring • Scratch Art Cards • Water Skimming Bounce Ball • Polar Pencils & Pencil Toppers

*Available Term 1.

For every deposit made at school students will receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens, they can redeem them for exclusive School Banking reward items in recognition of their regular savings habits. There are two new items released each term so be sure to keep an eye out for them!

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

School Banking day is Tuesday 8.45-9.10 in the Uniform Shop. Each week you need to bring your completed book/wallet to the school banking desk before school to complete your deposit. If you are interested in opening a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account for your child you can visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
