The Scroll Greetings in the Name of Christ!
How many times have we all sung, “Amazing grace! How sweet the
sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found,
was blind but now I see.” Great truth because it is only God’s Grace that
saves. But I wonder in this hyper-grace era of Church history if we have
not lost sight of our response to God’s grace that “brought us safe thus
far, and grace will lead us home.”
I once heard an old preacher say, “all truth makes for a bully, and all
grace makes for a coward.” The apostle John gives us the truth in John
1:14, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have
seen His glory, glory as of the only Son of the Father, full of grace and
truth.” We must have both grace and truth. That’s a problem for a world
that is given to extremes and spurns truth.
We live in a culture of political correctness, and unfortunately, that
has translated to some carrying this warped philosophy into the church
with “theological correctness.” The truth is that truth is most often the
casualty when it comes to political/theological correctness. So, here is
the unvarnished truth without the sugar-coated political/theological pill.
God’s grace means change.
The Scroll of the
prophet Isaiah was
handed to Him.
Unrolling it, He found
the place where it is
written: “The Spirit of
the LORD is on me,
because He has anointed
me to preach good news
to the poor. He has sent
me to proclaim freedom
for the prisoners and
recovery of sight for the
blind, to release the
oppressed, to proclaim
the year of the LORD’s
favor.”
Luke 4:17-19/Isaiah 61:1-2

Homecoming
September 25 Invite a guest for this day of worship and fellowship.
During morning worship, we will acknowledge all members 90
years and older. If you will reach that milestone by September
2017, please contact the church office. Our offering will go to
our VISION 2020 Debt Reduction to honor those members.
A covered dish lunch will follow morning Worship. Bring
enough for your family and to share.
Austin Caviness, former WXII meteorologist, will join us for
evening worship at 7:00 pm. Please plan to bring light snacks
for a time of fellowship.
We cannot experience God’s AMAZING GRACE without an AMAZING CHANGE in the way we
live our lives. Isn’t that what John Newton, the writer of “Amazing Grace” experienced? The man
who was once a slave ship captain—who was saved from a storm—and his life was never the same.
Isn’t that what happened to Paul on the Damascus Road? Paul came face to face with grace
personified and his life was never the same. Paul nails down the theology when he writes in 1
Corinthians 15:10, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in
vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God
that is with me.” Remember Christ’s words to the woman caught in adultery in John 8:11, “And
Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more.’” That is AMAZING GRACE that
demands a change.
Now, God is God, and we are not. God’s grace may or may not manifest itself in a Damascus
road experience. That is, radical change in a short period of time;
or that change may occur over more time. In my time as a pastor,
I have witnessed that the degree and speed of change is related
to obedience and commitment to Christ. Dietrich Bonhoeffer
calls grace without transformation “cheap grace.” The great
British preacher, Charles H. Spurgeon, puts it bluntly, “grace that
does not change my life will not save my soul.” The issue of how
we respond to God’s AMAZING GRACE is serious business!
The Bible is clear. When we understand our wretchedness as
sinners in light of God’s AMAZING GRACE in sending Christ to die on an Old Rugged Cross for our
sin—then we see God’s AWESOME LOVE, and it is that love that transforms us. “AMAZING GRACE!
How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind
but now I see.” Beloved, that is the GOOD NEWS of the GOSPEL! Thanks be to GOD!
Selah!

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations

surely I am with you always to the very end of the

Holding on to Christmas Please consider joining our choir to help with our Christmas musical, Holding on to Christmas.
It has several familiar carols and some that are not as familiar to our church. The story being told
is that the spirit of Christmas is something we need to hold on to through the year, and not
just at Christmas. God blessed us with the gift of His son and it is our privilege to serve
Him throughout the year.
We begin practicing our Christmas musical about 8 pm on Wednesdays in September.
Regular choir practice will continue to take place at 7:20 pm during which time we prepare for our
regular worship service. Of course, we would love to have you join us then as well. If you can’t,
really consider joining us for the Christmas musical. Even beginning this early,
we may still need a couple of extra practices near the date for presentation.
At this time, we plan to present the musical during worship on
December 18. We may present it one evening prior to that so people who
don’t come to our church will have the opportunity to enjoy it. I know from listening to your singing on
Sunday mornings that many of you have the gift of singing. Please consider using your God-given talent
to serve our Lord during this Christmas season. It is my prayer that some of you will join us so we can feel
more comfortable with the presentation in song that we give for God’s glory during the Christmas
season. As many of you know, our choir is very good and actually, they are wonderful people, but are
more comfortable when there are more people singing with them. That way, when one of us misses a
note, it isn’t so noticeable. Thank you for considering this opportunity to share God’s love through song. I
look forward to seeing you Wednesday evenings at 8:00 pm.

Birthdays
We plan, as a church, to do an Angel Tree this year—a small tree with names of children in
our county who won’t have much of a Christmas without our help. The Angel Tree is handled
through the Salvation Army which depends on each community to provide for the children.
We ask you to consider, as a family, a Sunday School class, or group of friends to sponsor one
of these children. Many of you have seen an Angel Tree at the YMCA in past years. Last year,
I noticed there were still names on the tree at the end of the sponsorship time.
During Church Council, we talked about bringing a Christmas present for Jesus and
decided this would be a way we could do that. Also, it will help families in our community and will be a
local ministry we can sponsor. Usually, the Salvation Army will get the information to the various groups
near the middle of November. Just after Thanksgiving, they want gifts turned in. The child’s name, along
with sizes and requested gifts are listed on the name tag. There is also information on the name tag about
where to take the items you have purchased. I noticed in the past couple of years that requests are often
for clothing and some children do not request a toy.
This can be used as a mission activity for ministries and families in the church. We’re providing this
information early so you will know what the Tree is for, and for you to plan your gift giving.
