February Calendar of Events
Volume 2017, Issue 2
February 2017
In the month of February, because of Valentine’s Day we often hear the word love used a great deal. Some people even refer to February as the month of love. For my parents, Geraldine and Roy Fritz, February is truly a month of love. They were mar-ried February 10, 1957 and in a few weeks, they will celebrate
their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Their love for God, for one another, and for their family, friends, and yes, even strangers, has been beautiful for me to witness all dur-ing my life. They taught me how to love God and others by their example. Their love reflected the type of love we can read about in Holy Scriptures.
The word love appears 551 times in the New International Version transla-tion of the Bible. In the Old Testament, the primary word in Hebrew that been trans-lated into the English word love is hesed. The word hesed included three basic meanings which interact together, strength, steadfastness, and love. The concept of hesed did not relate primarily to feelings of passion, but rather to decisions of the will. Hesed love is based on a covenant between two persons. Hesed love is what takes place in a wedding service, when the bride and groom make their vows to one another. "I, ___, take you, ___, for my lawful wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part." I recently heard another version of the last line which I loved, the words were, “until I draw my last breath.” Hesed love is the life-long enduring commitment of two people becoming one flesh. The covenant of mar-riage is an earthly example of the covenant that we share with God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who love each of us with hesed love. A steadfast love that never lets us go.
The ancient Greeks had six different words and concepts that we have trans-lated into the one English word love. I want to share three of their concepts of love that can be found in the New Testament. The first kind of love known by the Greeks was Eros, named after the Greek god of fertility, and it represented the idea of sexu-al passion and desire. This type of love can be something very fulfilling and enjoya-ble, but it can also have a more dangerous and irrational side. It is a love that can possess you overwhelmingly and not always in a positive way. Eros involves a loss of control over self. Remember the old expression, “they are madly in love?” It is good and precious gift from God to love another person passionately and intimately in a faithful relationship. But that passion should never exceed our passion for God and his glory.

From the Pastor's Pen
Volume 2017, Issue 2 Page 2
Continued from page 1 The second kind of love known by the Greeks was Philia or friendship, which the ancient Greeks val-
ued far above the sexuality of Eros love. Philia described a love that shows loyalty to your friends, sacrificing for them, as well as sharing your emotions with them. The concept of philia love also includes the love em-bodied between parents and their children. The city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, derives its name from this type of love. The Bible encourages us to embody Philia love because it is a love that reflects in our lives the deep love God our Heavenly Father has for each of us. Pastor Max Lucado has a great image of God’s Philia love for us. He wrote, “If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning… Face it, friend. He is crazy about you! ”
The third kind of love known by the Greeks was Agape, or love for everyone. It was the most radical type of love ever known. Agape was a selfless love that you extended to all people, whether family members or distant strangers. Agape love is a sacrificial love that voluntarily suffers inconvenience, discomfort, and even death for the benefit of another without expecting anything in return. Scholars have found that the Greek word agape was hardly ever used in Greek-speaking societies, it only appears in the great works of Homer ten times. But in the New Testament Gospels and Letters, it occurs 320 times.
There is no book in the New Testament that speaks more about agape love than the letter of 1 John.
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” 1 John 4 selected verses
Jesus our Savior is the best example of agape love. If we want to know how to love as God desires, we just need to look at Jesus. John knew Jesus very well being one of his three closest disciples. John caught a glimpse of what agape love looked like when it comes directly from God. John was in the Upper Room when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and then gave them this commandment. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Jesus loved each of us with agape love all the way to the cross. We are called and commanded to do the same. Jesus taught us what the embodiment of agape love looked like in practice. It might seem humanly impossible to love God and others with agape love, but it is made possible because of the Holy Spirit living in us. As John wrote, “when we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is made complete in us.” The more loving we are, the more God is present in our lives. May our love for God and others be strong and steadfast. May our love for God and others be a generous and compassionate. Do everything in love.
Love Always,
First, I would like to thank all of you for the generous Christmas gift that I received at the Christmas Eve service. I truly enjoy serving as your pastor here at Redeemer’s and look forward to many more years together.
Speaking of years, can you believe that it is 2017 already? In July, I will be here three years as your pastor, where has the time gone? I eagerly look forward to the activities and ministries that will continue to happen in this
new year. I am certain that God will be calling us to step out in faith in new missions in 2017. My prayer and hope is that all of you will be open to the Holy Spirit’s guidance in the days and months to come. I strongly believe that God has big plans for his people here at Redeemer’s in 2017.

Consistory Prayer
Loving Father, may we not get so caught up in our busy ways and material treasures that we miss the messages of love surrounding us. Awaken us, that we may give and take in the treasures of love as they come our way. May all acts of love, tremendous or tiny, be noticed each day of our lives. Amen.

Redeemer’s leadership will make a decision by 8 am whether to hold Christian Education at 9:15 am or our late worship service at 10:30 am.
A message will be placed on the church answering machine starting by 8:15 am. that will let anyone who calls know what decision has been made regarding holding scheduled activities for that Sunday.
If possible, notice of any cancellations on any day at Redeemer’s due to inclement weather will be sent by email to those who supply the church office with their email address.

2016 CROP WALK News “Joy To The World”
This has indeed been a blessed and joyful Christmas, even though it is now all behind us. Well, perhaps the actual holiday, but in our hearts it lives on! I have used the introduction to express the very joyful news of the 2016 CROP WALK. Church World Services has confirmed the total receipts for the annual Littlestown CROP WALK to be $3,075.00. A very good total for this years event. Of this amount the Littlestown Commu-nity Food Pantry should receive 15 % ($461.25) and Ruth’s Harvest should receive 10% ($307.50). All the CROP WALK events through the United States submit their total receipts to Church World Services at the completion of their events. It is optional for any of the events to request a “grant” of 25% returns to the community for services to feed the hungry. In turn, the remaining 75% is used by CWS for all their outreach programs.
All this ‘joyful’ news could only be accomplished from the generosity of supporters, sponsors and most importantly, the actual CROP WALK participants. It was somewhat of a “blustery” windy day for those who walked. However; that did not affect the determination nor the spirit of those walking. “Joy To The World” and to all who have once again been so willing to support this event.
May peace, love and joy be with all of you. Sincerely, Ernest Spamer, “Ernie”, Event coordinator.

HYMN HISTORY FROM YOUR PASTOR:
The youngest of 18 children, Charles Wesley (1707-1788) possessed prodi-gious talents that blossomed at an early age. Wesley penned more than 9,000 po-ems of a spiritual nature, 6,000 of which are hymns. His writings were passionate and well-crafted, conveying the true essence of Christian teaching. In 1747 when he wrote the hymn “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” I am sure he never imagined that it would rise to become one of the most popular Christian hymns of all time.
A substantial number of his writings were completed while riding on horseback to his evangelical meetings. What really set Charles apart from other hymn writers was his effective use of scriptural allu-sions, providing a spiritual roadmap whereby individuals could imagine a Christ-centered life. Scholars suggest that he was able to compose about 10 lines of verse daily for 50 years. Charles’ brother John Wesley sometimes served as editor to his hymns. John’s typical response was, “some were good, some were mediocre, and some were exceptional.” John can also be credited with improving the singability of Charles’ hymns.
The tune BEECHER was composed especially for these words by John Zundel in 1870 and first appeared in Christian Heart Songs. Born December 10, 1815, at Hockdorf, Germany, Zundel emigrated to the United States, where he spent more than 30 years. He was the organist for 28 years in the Plymouth Congregational Church in Brooklyn, New York, at a time when the famous preacher Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) was the pastor; the tune bears Beecher's name to commemorate him. Zundel was the assistant musical editor for the Plymouth Collection, prepared for the use of Beecher’s congregation, and contributed this tune Beecher and 27 others to that hymnal. He died in July 1882, at Cannstadt, Germany.
The hymn is really a prayer to Jesus, who is “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.” As you read or sing this hymn, invite God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to dwell within you and change your heart and mind.
Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation; enter every trembling heart.
Breathe, oh, breathe thy loving Spirit into every troubled breast; let us all in thee inherit; let us find the promised rest. Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be;
end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.
Come, Almighty, to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.
Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be; let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee:
changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love and praise.

January 9, 2017 Consistory Snapshot
1. Finance Report - Lenny Bucher provided a finance committee report. All apartments are rented and current on pay-ments. Angie Bradner was voted to become a new check signer for Redeemer’s Checking Account; replacing Bill Seibert. Funds from the Church Projects account were used to close out and balance the budget for 2016.
2. Eagle Scout Awards – Two scouts, Ian Miller and Jacob Reed will receive their Eagle Scout gifts from Redeemer’s at the February 5th Scout Sunday service
3. Worship Banners in Sanctuary – Brenda Bucher and the Altar Guild will meet to discuss the condition of the worship banners and if they need replaced/repaired.
4. Church Survey –A new church survey focusing on Church Missions to be mailed in January has been approved.
5. Mid-Winter Pastoral Convocation in Lancaster, Feb. 21-23 – Pastor Sterling will attend.
6. 8:15 a.m. Worship Services will continue to be held on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday.
7. The idea of creating a Master Calendar for preset annual events is being considered. Evangelism and Church Growth could then print out magnets with dates to be distributed around the community. Also, door hangars of special ser-vices could be printed and distributed to invite individuals from the Community.
8. Consistory approved the use of the Social Hall/Kitchen by Friends of the Library for soup making Feb. 15 and 16.
9. Italian Dinner – Linda and Lou DeMaio have generously volunteered to help spearhead our second annual Italian Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 25 with a snow date of March 4.
10. Mission Trip Opportunity: Pastor Sterling continues to invite members for a mission trip to Appalachian South Folk-life Center in West Virginia from August 6-12, 2017 for anyone age 13 and over. The fee for the 6 days is $225 in-cludes housing, worksite supervisors, materials and cultural programs. It does not include food or food preparation and transportation. Please contact Pastor or Dot if you are interested in this mission trip. An organizational meeting will be held here at Redeemer’s on Feb. 26th after church.
11. Boiler Update – Davidson H&C Co, Inc. has begun work to replace the two old boilers with two new energy efficient wall hanging units. They are trying to get the work completed quickly so we continue to have heat during the winter months.
12. Outstanding Key Letter- Consistory approved a letter to be sent to all Church Key holders requesting they recheck locks when leaving the building and to turn in their keys if they are no longer needed. Dot Decker has record of all key holders and will maintain this master list.
13. New officers were elected for the 2017 Consistory. They are: Lenny Bucher, President; Sandi Snoke, First Vice Presi-dent; Lee Ann Study, Second Vice President; and Angie Bradner, Secretary.
Committee Reports: Scouts - Eagle Scout plaque is still being researched. Youth/Christian Ed – No Youth Director hired yet. Christian Ed needs teachers for Sunday School. Already have a curric-ulum. It takes about one hour to plan and then one hour of teaching on Sundays. Please see Kathy Bucher or Angie Bradner if you are interested. Substitutes are also needed. Pastor is currently working with the teens, but will need to break away from that in March to work with confirmands. Helping Hands – Next meeting, Thursday, January 12, 6:30 p.m. to plan for the Italian Dinner. Personnel- Staff reviews are almost completed. We are not rushing into hiring a Youth Director. Need to research background, length of commitment to the job, and experience in the field to ensure a great experience for all. Building and Grounds/Safety –Boiler repair is currently under way. Some things are being done to make church more secure. Pew in balcony needs repair. Key letter being sent to keyholders. Worship and Music – Pentecost and Choir concert are conflicting. Need to check with Herb Sell about changing date. Still looking at possibly purchasing new hymnals. Called to Care – Christmas gifts and cards were distributed to the shut-ins. Candee and Shirley arranged to have these distributed along with help from Pastor Sterling. RUCC members were encouraged to send Christmas cards to about 20 members. This was well-received. Next meeting is scheduled for late January. Missions – Check was given to George and Betty Stem to distribute to the VonHerbulis family (Betty and George’s rela-tives) who are missionaries in Rwanda from the money raised during VBS’s Mission Possible. Souper Bowl has com-menced and will continue until Feb. 5 Super Bowl. This year, items other than soup will be collected and be distributed to both the New Hope Ministries Food Pantry and Ruth’s Harvest. Publicity – Need a chair for this and help in doing this work.
Respectfully Submitted, Deb Kinard, Outgoing President
