    Although our Quarterpresentation of our proposed ideasfor this project were met with

    great enthusiasm by the faculty,the Projectograph raised doubtsabout a) the safety of such a deviceand b) the robustness of thechosen hardware against muchforce as it spins at 30 revolutionsper second. Although safety wasnever an issue, our confidence inthe hardware not tearing itselfapart was shattered with somecalculations, and strong advice from Scott that we shouldconsider another approach.

    We then decided that we might be able to create a"virtual" volumetric display - a ProjectographlessProjectograph, if you will - using the same Vuzix AR

    goggles we'd planned to use forthe Ocular Prosthetoscope. It

    occurred to us that not one but TWO of our deliverableswere riding on the success of the Projectograph. We alsorealized we were relying heavily on AR goggle we may or

    may not be able to acquire. That's when we decided afresh round of brainstorming was needed, and here arethe results:

    LASER WEENIE(WORKING TITLE)

    A shoulder-mounted, hands-freelocation-finding device that projectsan arrow shaped laser mark onto the

    ground in front of the wearer. Thearrow will point to a pre-selected way-point, and will automatically adjustitself based on the wearer's owndirectional heading.

    ECG FIELD GLOVE(WORKING TITLE)

    A glove with built in ECG

    (electrocardiography) capabilities.The wearer simply touches the patient with ECG enabled fingers andpatient's heart rate is displayed viaDroid mounted on the wearer's wrist.

    PERSONAL WEATHER STATION(WORKING TITLE)

    A device that reads atmosphericconditions and communicates them tothe wearer via Droid.

    NETWORK RADAR(WORKING TITLE)

    A wireless-capable

    phone that, when used incombination with a wireless network, will beable to send the phone-carriers GPS location toother users on thenetwork. All users on thenetwork would haveshared GPS locations,allowing them to bemarked on a radarshowing the location of

    Each team at the ETC was highly encouragedto have team photos for promotionalpurposes. On Monday September 13, teamS.C.I.F.I. took team photos thanks to StephenDewhurst, class of 2011.

    I want to get alittle more concreteabout this afternoon'sdiscussion. If you

    want to play with thenumbers, heres the basic physics:

    Force = mass x acceleration (mass in kg) Centripetal acceleration = W2 x R(W = angular velocity in rad/s and R = radius in m)

    W = 2x N (N = revolutions per second)

    This gives you force in Newtons.(4.45 N = 1 lb)

    So the force goes up with the square of therotational speed and linearly with radius.

    The 50 inch width screen I used as an example hasa 25 in. radius to the outside edge.There the outside1 inch of glass/screen was experiencing 2750 lb ofcentripetal force.

    A 15 in. screen has a 7.5 in. radius thats .3 of the 25in radius of the 50 in. and the mass is about .67 of thelarger screen. So even for the 15 in. monitor theoutside 1 inch of glass/screen would experience 550 lb.

    You can estimate theoverall centripetal forceknowing that it is linear

    with radius. The nextsubsequent one inchexperiences a 13% decreasein force and so on. That

    means the central core of the screen will see about2000 lb of centripetal force. The fact that there

    would be an outside steel brace doesn't matter. Think of an amusement park ride that spins you.You're not going to fall out because your safely heldin. But you sure do still feel the centripetal force.

    These are approximations and they neglect the factthat the force is spread out over the vertical distanceof the monitor. So the stress is less. Nonetheless,the risk of the glass failing is very high even for the 15in monitor.

    Structural failure aside, I think the stress on theelectronic components and connections pretty much

    guarantees an electrical failure.

    The last Monday(September 20) was very excitingday for the team S.C.I.F.I. Because the feedbackduring the Quarter walkarounds were extremelypositive in many aspects including the amount ofconducted research, inspiration sources, presentation
