Our Children, Their Future

N/A

The members of National Primary Heads (NPH) are deeply concerned aboutthe current direction of travel and the lack of debate about the aims of primaryeducation and how these aims should be met in the 21st century.

In particular, we are troubled by the narrowing of the curriculum, the emphasison measurable outcomes and testing and the consequent lack of ambition forchildren up to the age of 11. We believe that:- young children have distinctive learning needs;- much of their most important learning happen elsewhere than in schools;- primary education should involve much more than literacy and numeracy;- too many children are disengaged from learning by the time they leaveprimary school.

'Our children, their future' is not concerned with apportioning blame. NPHbelieves that:

- most parents and carers and headteachers, teachers and other staff inschools do their best, often in difficult circumstances;- politicians of all parties -and most of us- have not thought through theimplications for primary education of the changed context in which youngchildren are growing up and will lead their adult lives;- we have identified part of the problem, but a wide-ranging and well-informeddebate about the future of primary education to identify possible solutions isneeded.
