The speaker for the day was David Glen, who is an Accountant and a Solicitor he also has a post graduate diploma in taxation law. David has over twenty years’ experience in the provision of tax and strategic advice. David has worked as a tax partner in a large accounting firm and more recently the General Manager, Tax Counsel at TAL Australia. David is a regular speaker around Australia and overseas. David spoke to the members on the importance of

proper Estate Planning. David quoted several cases where the beneficiaries of an estate were not able to get their share of the estate due to a badly drawn up will. David stated that the will needs to take into consideration the family members and their ability to retain the wealth acquired, in other words the “Black Sheep” and stated the importance of doing a family tree and a Balance Sheet of ones assets and liabilities. He stated that it is sometimes better to pass the wealth to the third generation if the second generation has enough money. David also mentioned the capital gains tax implications involved when changing ownership of assets especially business assets before death of the owner/owners. He stressed the importance of a proper will especially in the case of blended families. David stated that the will needs to be prepared by a Lawyer and advised against “Do it yourself” will kits and likened it to performing surgery on yourself by looking in the mirror! David gave examples of several badly done wills and the sad outcomes that came about due to the ambiguity of the written wills.

He also pointed out that any beneficiary cannot also be a signatory as a witness to the will and if done properly by a Lawyer these simple errors can be avoided. David stated that if there is a change to the will this can be done by way of a codicil, again with the help of a Lawyer. David stated that it was important to let the Lawyer know the back ground of the family members who are to be beneficiaries in the will so that the Lawyer can have a proper understanding when drafting the will in the right manner with the correct wording. Note from Lino

To all Rotarian Members,

When you come to the meetings, please notify the front desk if you have a guest with you.

Quite often when we pay Anglers and our number of attendees doesn't match theirs, it is an

embarrassment if they prove that they are correct.

Regards

Lino
